Brought another group of friends here to try their delicious food and tried to make reservations for 6 people online but it wouldn't let me so I messaged the business and they were able to make a reservation for 6 people. The food, service and ambiance are on point. Two of us ordered the maracuya (passion fruit drink), while we waited for the others to arrive. One of my friends is allergic to garlic and the restaurant mentioned that they can make food without garlic, as everything is made fresh. My friend decided to order her own dish separately of pasta with shrimp while the rest of us, ordered food to share! We ordered the trio sampler of ceviche and fried calamari which was flavorful, the poor man's steak medium rare and what a big steak that was to cut and share with plantains, fries, fried egg and jasmine rice, very tasty, Isabella salad, paella (more than enough to feed 5 of us and very fresh and delicious). For dessert, 2 of us had coffee, 2 of us had affogado, 2 of us had the lucuma with the cookies and I had the lucuma ice cream. My friends enjoyed the flavorful food and dessert!

My husband and I have been to the El Cerrito location quite a few times since it happens to be our favorite Peruvian restaurant in the whole Bay Area. We were stoked when we realized this second location opened up and decided to try it. I love the interior at this location! And they have some parking in the back of the restaurant which is nice. Matt and Andres took care of us and were fantastic. We came in with a hangry toddler and Matt quickly got crayons and a coloring page that kept our baby entertained until the food arrived. They always made sure we had what we needed and offered other sauces to go with our meal (hot sauce, tartar, etc). We ordered our go-to dishes: pescado a lo macho and chupe de camerones. Listen, we've been chasing these flavors restaurant after restaurant throughout the bay, hoping to find somewhere closer to our home that is just as good. Nowhere else has come close to being as delicious as El Mono. Both the dishes we chose are seafood based dishes, with pescado a lo macho having a variety of seafood and chupe de camerones having shrimp. In both dishes, the seafood is cooked perfectly. No over-cooked, rubbery, dry pieces to be found. And the sauces are heaven sent. Oh! I also have always loved the corn nuts they serve complimentary when you first sit down. Definitely eat it with the green sauce they give you. It's scrumptious.

Visiting the area and this was a definite Find!!! Unbelievable lunch specials include soup or salad & beverage. My Heart loved the fish and the Arroz Tapado was delicious... almost licked the plate. Matt was fantastic and gave some history on the dish I had. Fun!!! There is also a patio for al fresco dining. And how many places have a menu for your dog!? Wish we lived closer!!

All the dishes were great! We're glad we saved space for desert. The Lucuma Ice Cream was delicious. Matt and Niurka took good care of us. Overall great atmosphere, not too loud and nice place for date. We're definitely coming back to try more of the dishes.

Came on a Friday for lunch specials and I was not disappointed! It wasn't busy when I came, but by the time I was leaving, the restaurant was almost full! Matt immediately helped me find a nice spot to sit, and quickly took my drink order. He also recommended several items for me to try, since it was my first time. He recommended I try the cebiche, paella, and their fish with rice. Everything was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. The cebiche was fresh and melted in your mouth in every bite, and pairing it with the veggies, nuts, and sauce it came with, was the perfect combination in your mouth! The paella came out piping hot! It was good and I wish I got 2 plates for this. It's a lot but I wanted leftovers, I couldn't help but finish it in one sitting. The fried fish was delicious and breaded evenly. It didn't feel too heavy and was the perfect amount to pair with the rice that was provided. I can't wait to come back and try more items! Definitely highlights the tastes and flavors of Peru!

This was my first time trying this spot. I've driven by it a few times while passing through the neighborhood, so I was excited to finally stop in. I'm a huge fan of rotisserie chicken--especially the kind you find at Peruvian spots--so it's always great to discover a place that offers something healthy yet hearty. The staff was warm and welcoming, and I really liked the vibe of the place. Overall, it was a great experience. I ordered the rotisserie chicken, salad, plantains and Peruvian beans, and everything was top-notch. My server, Christian, did an amazing job and was attentive throughout my entire visit. If you're looking for good, wholesome Peruvian food, this is the spot. Don't miss out on this gem.

The food at this El Mono is as authentic as the original. Maybe even better. The menu is the same (feels like they got more items). Feels new but traditional food staples are papa la huancaina, (puff potatoes with ceviche). arroz Chanda (fried rice) , and the desért ice cream is a buet chocolate coffee that's delicious. the pulpo parillado (grilled octopus) appetizer is amazing but only available weekends. Also they have a lot indoor and outdoor Spaces. And parking. Taya was our waitress and she was great she had great recommendations and knew the menú back and forth.

Freshly made and well balanced dishes. I'm really impressed with all the sauces that accompanied my dishes -- I don't always like the sauces that are provided at some of my local Peruvian spots, but these were simply delectable. Great service and a menu that has something good for everyone.

New spot, big flavors, ceviche that lives rent-free in my head Came through **El Mono's new Berkeley location** to check it out, have a quick bite, and I'm so glad we did. The space is super clean, bright, and welcoming. Right off Gilman in a chill neighborhood. It already feels like it belongs there. The menu looks stacked. Like...so many things I want to try, plus a solid lineup of drinks. Definitely one of those places where you already know you're coming back before you even leave. We ordered the ceviche and WOW. Full stop. That dish alone is worth the visit. Fresh, bright, perfect, and honestly one of the best ceviches I've had. Spring day? Summer afternoon? Random winter craving? I'd come back for this every single time. We literally drank the sauce. Whatever that mix was, I want it on everything I eat for the rest of my life. Also shoutout to the super woman Zoraida. Absolute powerhouse. She was everywhere: kitchen, picking up plates, cleaning, moving nonstop. Total badass energy. Love seeing her efficiency and care. Can't wait to come back for more food and more drinks. If you're in Berkeley, go check this spot out. El Mono is doing it right.

Not my first time at El Mono, but my first time in the Berkeley location. Was familiar with the menu since dining at the El Cerrito location previously. The location is on a corner, and has an outdoor patio, but we dined inside. Service was courteous and welcoming. We shared some patacones and plátanos to start, and I went with saltado de pollo for my main. All was tasty and the addition of green beans to the saltado was a winning move. With the diverse and reasonably priced menu, we'll definitely be back.

Wow, I was impressed! The menu is almost overwhelming, with just two of us we tried two combinations and both were great! The trio del Mar had excellent crispy fried calamari, ceviche and another chilled fish in an addictive aji amarillo sauce. Then we tried the antichuchos: grilled skewers (we chose shrimp and chicken) that were cooked perfectly and really tasty. I'll definitely be back to try the dozen more dishes that all sound pretty good! read more

Excellent service. Walked in and was greeted with warmth by Christian. We were on time at 7 pm for our reservation.We had been invited by our real estate client. Christian seated us .I told him we would be waiting to order food until our client who was soon to arrive came.He was right there to take our orders. Right from my first visit (and now my second!), I've been so impressed by this place. The workers are extremely friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which really adds to the experience. And the food? Everything I've tried is delicious and makes me feel so nourished, like a warm hug. My absolute favorite is the shrimp creamy soup with poached egg and rice. Excellent Ceviche! The leche de tigre was on point, just the right amount of spice and the fish was incredible, fresh and cooked by the lime to perfection. I can't remember the last time I ate somewhere where every dish was a 10 -- oh, wait a minute. Astrid & Gaston -- another Peruvian restaurant. (In Peru!) What really rocked my socks were the sauces! I love that I have very little idea what's in them, and therefore can't duplicate them at home. Lovely service -- spoke to the owner -- he went above and beyond to make sure our first time was great. What a wonderful find! We decided we wanted something a little different and found this delightful spot. Christian, our server, was so good, knowledgeable, and friendly. The food was out of this world. It was difficult to choose which dish to order. I ordered the Dirty Tuna sandwich (the olives made it "dirtyA") and it was so yummy. Others at my table ordered the Salgado de Champinones, the Aji De Gallina, and Chufa de Camarones --all were delicious. We will definitely be back. Christian, our server was great and the food was fantastic. This new restaurant, is a branch from the original in El Cerrito, and tucked in a quiet corner of West Berkeley. Its music lively, but not drowning, and it's 3 sided interior let's in a lot of natural lighting. The food was great and the portions were a good size, especially for the bay area. The steaks were very tender, chimmichurri fragrant, and lots of very fresh seafood. The trio de mar is a great choice to sample 3 of the Peruvian seafood appetizers. Definitely try their alfajores and lucuma ice cream dessert. That's a must get to finish the meal, with hints of maple, caramel, creamy, and decadent-lusciousness of a rich egg-yolk. read more

Been to El Mono almost a dozen times. Unique flavors abound. Had a few steaks now, excellent every one. Their Huancaina sauce is a winner. Christian has helped me deveral times, making sure my experience was flawless. Great location on Gilman where the Gliman Grill was for decades. Easy access and parking, clean bathrooms. Had an amazing dinner and I have to recognize Cristian for the incredible service. He was incredibly, friendly, and provided excellent recommendations that made my meal truly special - the Antonio's Pescado al Achiote and Sangria were incredible! It's rare to find such personalized service. Cristian is a huge asset to El Mono Restaurant, and he genuinely cares about customer satisfaction. I was excited to find out that El Mono was opening a new location in Berkeley. The flavorful food as well as the excellent service definitely carried over. I can tell the cooks love their craft, and that the wait staff is really attentive. Our waiter, Desiree, really showed us what great hospitality in the food industry looks like. She checked in on us often, was always happy to be there, and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. They have indoor as well as out door seating. It's a very clean warm atmosphere, which I loved. I had chicken and shrimp anticuchos and loved how well seasoned they both were. The chicken was grilled to perfection. It tasted really good and was also very tender. I definitely need to come back to try some other dishes and desserts I was eyeing. read more

I don't remember her name, but she told me she was from Nicaragua. Her kindness, friendliness, and genuine smile immediately made me feel welcome. It may seem like a small gesture, but great customer service makes such a big difference. We all get so busy and distracted these days that sometimes we forget how meaningful a warm greeting can be. She truly brightened my day, and I wanted to take a moment to thank her for making me feel so welcome. At first it seemed like too much food for me that day, but once I saw everything included, I started thinking maybe I should have ordered it too since it was only about seven dollars more. They brought complimentary chips, guacamole, and salsa to the table, and everything was so flavorful. The guacamole was especially delicious, and they happily refilled the chips several times. I finally understood why the restaurant is called "Los Moles" because their mole sauces are outstanding. I got to try some from my son's plate, and it definitely made me want to come back and explore more of the different mole options. They also offer vegetarian choices, which is great. Although I am very particular about cooking surfaces, my food is cooked on and in, the Mexican coffee which was heated in some type of who knows what metal, had a good flavor. (I guess the bakers got too enthusiastic with the water bath.) The crumb was tight but came off more as dry than chewy. And the malt syrup was poured with a liberal hand -- there is no subtlety to the flavor. To their credit, the cream cheese is well paired. It brings its own flavor with a noticeable tang, and it is dense. You need a bagel that will hold up under the pressure of a knife while spreading the thick schmear. I love that Saul's is making bagels in house now, but I think I will look elsewhere on their menu for the real comfort foods.

There were about 14 of us, and from the very beginning--when we were coordinating the RSVP--the staff was incredibly kind, responsive, and accommodating. The evening itself was seamless. The manager went out of his way to make sure we felt taken care of. I didn't really get the passion fruit flavor I was expecting. The lomo saltado was about a 6/10 for me. The meat itself was tender, which I really liked, and the presentation of the dish looked nice. However, the fries tasted like the kind that come frozen in a bag, so I didn't end up eating them. I went to el Mono in Berkeley with my family it was an amazing experience. The food was spectacular!!! everything was full of flavor and clearly made with care, The service was excellent, very attentive and welcoming the whole time. What love most was seeing the chef dancing while cooked you can tell they truly enjoyed their work and that happiness comes through in every dish. Absolutely loved this place. The Peruvian food was on point--full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and you can tell everything is made with care. Every dish hit, from the first bite to the last. This place is new to the neighborhood so I was excited to try it. It did not disappoint! The food was excellent and it was really the sauces that wowed us the most. The chimichurri was super tasty. We wanted to put it on anything and everything just to keep eating it. I wish I could buy it by the jar. The ambiance was very nice too, great place for a date. Our server, Christian, was helpful and friendly. I like that they offer different levels of sweetness on many of their house-made drinks. My sister and I came to El Mono for dinner and we were blown away! The food was incredible -- we shared the Peruvian paella, and it was full of flavor, fresh, and perfectly cooked. Wow, what an amazing experience! We hosted a memorial for a friend at El Mono yesterday, and it was beautiful. Matt and Dani communicated and planned with us in advance, Anibal and Karina prepared amazing appetizers and meals, and Andres and Dani made it run smoothly and made everyone feel welcome on the day of the event. From allowing us to run our memorial slide show on their large screen to helping us arrange a memorial table and flowers, we were taken care of with efficiency and good nature. Lomo saltado is the move, wok fried beef with crispy fries mixed in, that soy and citrus sauce soaks into everything. Got the trio de mar too which covers the seafood appetizers, all three were worth ordering. Verde sauce comes on the side, put it on everything, do not skip this step. Peruvian paella is the kind of dish that makes the table go quiet. Generous with the seafood, not just for show. 5 stars, best Peruvian in the East Bay and they have two locations now so no excuses read more

I visited El Mono Peruvian Restaurant on Wednesday and had a great experience overall. The service was excellent from start to finish. Matt took care of us and was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He took the time to explain the menu and made us feel very welcome. The sangria was super refreshing, perfect to start the meal. I highly recommend the shrimp ceviche paired with the patacones and the Paella, such a great combination of flavors. Overall, a really enjoyable experience with great food and outstanding service. Hi!! My family and I went to this restaurant and it was so good. My godfather order the fried fish, and he said it was delicious!! And he used to live in Peru! I ordered the Pesto N' Steak. When you hear this name you would think pesto sauce and steak?? No! It's pesto pasta and steak. I eat a lot so I ordered the 12 oz which is to pieces of steak! My mom ordered the Arroz Tapado. Great new restaurant in Berkeley! El Mono was delicious and beautifully updated inside. The ceviche was fresh and had a good amount of fish. The Lomo Saltado was also very tasty and the fries were perfect. However, the standout was the Seco de Cordero; lamb was tender, beans were creamy and stewed very nicely. Finally, the Miti Miti (drink), Lucuma ice cream and mousse de marcuya were delicious with fresh tropical flavor. Last, but not least, Criss and Niurka provided great service.
