I'm so glad I gave Eem another try and this time it was sooo yummy! The papaya salad was the perfect spice level 7.5/10, the bbq fried rice 7/10, the red curry was my favorite. Also spicy but 8.5/10 it was so creamy. The dessert was like a soft jello texture with mango shave ice, it was so good too 8/10. We sat at the bar as I was getting a little hangry and didn't wanna wait for a table We both ordered a cocktail. I opted for the green curry and she got the red curry. The green curry was flavorful and I really enjoyed the pork. Her red curry was delicious and it was vegan. Please note that they don't do spice levels. I always order my green curry made Thai spicy. I visited this buzzy spot since I saw it wasn't too far from my hotel and I had recently eaten at a thai/bbq spot near Houston and so I wanted to compare the two restaurants. There was easy to find street parking only 1/2 block away. I sat at the bar area since seating is super premium here. I looked over the brief menu and decided to go with the white curry with brisket burnt ends and a cocktail called Yes, No, Maybe So. Drink - a very nice Gin-based drink with many layers. Definitely a tropical / tiki drink with the coconut lime basil and pineapple flavors going on. Main dish - comes in a medium size bowl with a side of steamed rice. Can't say I've ever heard of white curry but it's good here and a bit spicy. Cauliflower shows up in this dish, as well as in their green curry dish and as an appetizer when ordered alone. Sunday date night at Eem was so vibey ~ We were sat and helped right away when we stopped by on Sunday night. The host was friendly and our waiter was so nice and witty. We actually don't have great spice tolerance (unfortunate, since a lot of Eem's menu items are spice-loaded). Our waiter recommended items that worked for us. We appreciated that he was honest about how spicy certain dishes are without trying to sell us different items. We got a drink each and they were great. Both were pretty fruity and tropical with southeast asian notes. We got the sweet and sour fried chicken, wok fried greens and white rice to share. The portions were just right for a light meal. Items are flavorful and well cooked. It's dark inside with moody lights and an exposed ceiling. Tables were pretty close together and we were able to hear all the conversations around us. I wished we were able to try the other menu items, they all sound so good. There are plants all over. The plates and glasses are colorful. Our party of five were seated shortly after arriving for a late lunch. The menu for food is pretty small. However, their drink menu is quite extravagant! We ordered the Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken to share as an appetizer for the group. These were made with boneless thighs. I ordered the Smoked Pork Belly Krapao for myself while the rest of the group got curry dishes. The Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken was freshly made. It was SUPER HOT, but juicy. The Smoked Pork Belly Krapao was good. It was unlike any Thai dish I would normally get. It had a unique flavor because the pork belly was smoked. You could definitely smell and taste the smokiness. With their limited food menu, I noticed that the entrees were also on the smaller side. None of us had any problems with finishing our dishes. I was recommended this spot from a few folks boasting it offers the best curry, quite possibly the best dish in Portland, and while I'd only had a handful of meals in the few days I visited, the white curry with brisket burnt ends was hands-down the best meal. I don't eat mammals, which limited my choices, but I still found dishes that would make me happy. My husband, who does eat mammals, was thrilled with the options. I don't understand the raving reviews, the endless lines, and the hype overall. My fiance and I waited for about 45 min until we were seated. Since it was just the 2 of us, we shared a couple of dishes: -Roasted Mushroom Fried Rice: This was so salty that I could get hypertension if I ate the entire thing. It was overly seasoned with soy sauce. The rice was very hard and the flavors didn't blend well. This was probably one of the worst things I've ever eaten in a long time. This is was a 0/5. -White Curry w/ Brisket Burnt Ends: I've had burnt ends before and this was not it. It was more of a braised beef which was also very salty (but not as bad as the fried rice). I liked the roasted cauliflower and the coconut cream flavor. This came with a side of white rice and it was oddly mushy. This tasted slightly better than the mushroom fried rice. The food overall was a 1/5. Thai Fusion could sometimes be a hit or miss, and this was a huge miss. Not to mention, it was kinda pricey especially since the quality didn't match the price tag. Eem is a Thai-American BBQ fusion restaurant in Portland, Oregon that is well worth the hype! Upon getting to the restaurant, there was about an hour and a half long wait for dinner on the weekend, which is to be expected. Once we were called into be seated, it did take a bit for our order to be taken, granted that it was very busy. The interior itself was a bit cramped since they were trying to seat as many people as possible, but still very bright inside. My girlfriend decided to order a good amount of food to try as much as possible. Starting with the papaya salad, it wasn't too special. It wasn't a bad papaya salad by any means, but not a bite worth remembering since it wasn't too spicy or flavorful. The wok-fried greens were a lot more flavorful than expected, with good garlic and peanut notes in the greens that acted like a palate cleanser with the rest of the food. The Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken was fried to perfection, however, it is boneless which I was surprised about but didn't ruin the flavor or texture! The Chopped BBQ Fried Rice was a bit disappointing. I was expecting a lot more meatier BBQ flavor but it fell very short of that expectation. It was still a good fried rice but definitely needs more of that BBQ flavor. The star of the show was the White Curry with BBQ Burnt Ends. The dish already comes with white rice, an amazing complement to the delicious curry sauce. The cauliflower in the curry had a great crunch to them and the burnt ends tasted as amazing as they looked. Eem was a fantastic dinner spot, but does have some flaws in the flavor of some things. The three of us had a wonderful time at Eem, our first time there. The food was great, and the service even better. We ordered the beet salad, white curry, massaman curry w/smoked lamb shoulder, roasted mushroom fried rice, and BOTH desserts (!) - the coconut panna cotta as well as the POG sherbet. The sherbet was refreshing with a nice kick and the coconut panna cotta was savory without being cloyingly sweet. The mushroom fried rice was a big hit for us. The curries were good, though I will say the massaman curry was a bit overpowering for me, with the shredded lamb shoulder smokiness a bit much. They have a separate seating area with a few larger tables for reservations, so initial impression was solid. We entered the main building and were escorted out to another entrance. My favorite dishes at Eem are the white curry with burnt ends, lamb massaman curry, and the fried rice. The white curry is my favorite dish by far. The curry is super unique and goes super well with the sweet juicy burnt ends. That being said, for it being a mushroom fried rice I expected more mushrooms and for the price, perhaps more variety. It seemed to just have basic button mushrooms in it. We chose the white curry with burnt ends as we were told it is their most popular item. Very tasty! The curry was rich with great depth. But it certainly was not a burnt ends. I'll admit, being from Texas I'm a bit of a stickler about bbq. But as a modest backyard who has screwed up my fair share of brisket, I like to think I'm relatively fair. This was not a burnt end by any means. It did not have the smoke, flavor, nor tenderness to be considered a burnt end from any bbq-er, professional or amateur. It was good beef, and if it had been called white curry beef I probably would've had no qualms. But again - the burnt end is in the name and the burnt end is definitely factored in the price. The food here was a surprise in the sense that I wasn't sure what to expect. This is a Thai fusion, which I think usually means ethnic food made by a local white person. But they put the YUM in DAAYUM that was tasty. I loved, loved, loved the Yu Choy. That came out first and had wonderful crunch to it with a delicious garlicky soy sauce that has the perfect balance and not too salty. My hubs even liked it and he is not a big veggie lover. I ordered the smoked pork belly krapao and hubs ordered the massaman lamb shoulder. The pork belly dish was A-freakin-mazing! It came with an egg that was cooked so crispy on the outside where the egg whites had a crispiness to them but the inside was pure creamy liquid yolk perfection. I added it on top of somebof the rice and ate it with bites of the pork. *chef's kiss* Hubs's lamb was also tasty. The lamb was cooked to perfection and was so tender and not stringy or tough. The massaman curry was a little on the sweeter side but I enjoyed how everything was cooked just right. Potatoes were cooked but still firm and not too soft, and the flavors were all so good in the few bites I stole from him. Service: People working here were friendly and the food came out quickly. Ambiance: I love all of the plants and large windows with natural lighting pouring in. I don't drink but the drinks all looked pretty and this place was definitely a vibe on a Sunday afternoon with lots of happy patrons. Families, friends and couples. read more
