Eem was such a fun Portland food experience! We tried the white curry with burnt ends, and WOW, it was weird in a good way. A Thai-meets-American bbq. The the combination of smoky, tender barbecue with the creamy Thai curry was so good. The burnt ends brought that deep, savory, slightly charred flavor, while the curry gave it a completely different dimension. The flavors worked well. I just wished the burnt ends were more fatty. We also tried a pork belly dish, which was another highlight. The pork was rich and flavorful, and I loved the crispy fried egg, green beans, cucumber, and fish sauce with it. Break up the yolk to dip with the pork. The cucumbers and green beans are a nice clean accompaniment; spicy fish sauce was great - White curry with brisket burnt ends: I've never had a white curry, but the white curry and cauliflower was a great match for the super rich brisket pieces. I love the interesting combination! Note: pretty much everything has some spice to it, so for kids, the jasmine rice and yu choy are the main items, though my older daughter did ok with the fried chicken and brisket! We had a 11:15 am reservation for Saturday and we shared the following: 1) Sweet and sour fried chicken, small 2) Roasted mushroom fried rice, regular 3) White curry with brisket burnt ends 4) Red curry with roasted vegetables 5) Massamam curry with smoked lamb shoulder The Thai iced tea is refreshing but the mango nectar can be skipped. It is not an in-house, concocted drink. Our favorite entree was the roasted mushroom fried rice. It has that complex charred aroma which is achieved by stir-frying over extreme heat with the wok. My family and I stopped by Eem for lunch and for a group of five, they actually had a bit of difficulty accommodating us during the lunch rush on a walk-in. We ended up seating outside on the patio at a table for four with an extra chair. The inside of the restaurant can get pretty loud, so if you're looking for a more quiet dining experience, I would certainly recommend requesting a table outdoors. Between the five of us, we ordered a large order of their BBQ fried rice, a large order of their sweet and sour fried chicken, white curry with brisket burnt ends, and wok fried yu choy. This ended up being plenty of food and we even had leftovers to take home as well. If you need any recommendations from the menu, your server will be more than happy to provide options. Of the dishes we ordered, the one I enjoyed the most was the sweet and sour fried chicken. The boneless chicken thighs were incredibly juicy and the exterior was craggly, crispy, crunchy and well-seasoned. Like good fried chicken, the dish did not taste oily at all. The other dish I really enjoyed was the brisket fried rice. You really can taste the "wok hei" in this dish. There's a smokey, charred flavor in every bite and they're really generous with how much brisket is used in the dish as well. The only critique I had food-wise is I thought the burnt ends in the white curry were a bit dry and a little tough. The cut of brisket was too lean so it didn't have the melt in your mouth texture you typically associate with slow cooked BBQ. That said, my experience as a whole at Eem was otherwise incredible. Heard a lot about this place but was a little unsure about a TX BBQ-Thai food mashup. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. It really worked and highly recommend. So we went in the middle of the afternoon but the line was still pretty long. They were nice enough to let us sit at tables they weren't waiting on while we waited. The restaurant has a jungle vibe, a real Southeast Asian feel. It's fun and lively. The waitstaff are pleasant, albeit not super friendly but maybe that's the vibe they're going for. We got the fried chicken, the wok fried yu choy, smoked pork krapao, white curry with brisket, and red curry with veggies. We also got a bunch of drinks. It's fun to have a place that puts just as much effort into their non alcoholic drinks as their alcoholic drinks. Strongly recommend you try something while you're here. Everything was great but if I had to pick my two favorites, it was the fried chicken and the white curry. I was worried the fried chicken would be too sweet but it's very well balanced. Not overly sweet or sour, very crispy and the meat was tender and juicy. For some reason I thought they would bones in them but they didn't. It was clearly the table favorite as it was gone pretty quick. The white curry was a great example of how this mashup of two cuisines work well together. The white curry is a mellow flavor and almost acts like a thin gravy to the well smoked brisket. I have high standards for brisket and whether this would hold up on its own is a question but it certainly worked well in this context. That's not to say the rest wasn't good. I think I liked the pork more than others but the stronger Thai flavors was not as big of a hit as the rest. That said, the fried egg was perfect and paired with the juicy pork belly that was so tender and rich. The red curry was delicious although the choice of veggies was not my favorite. Really good food! Packed house both times we went. There was also a line out of door so be prepared for a short wait during peak meal times. It's a small bit mighty menu. So if you have hard time choosing what to eat, not to much of a conundrum here. You are going to want to make a reservation for this place! We went on a Sunday and decided to join the waitlist when we got there. We waited 45 minutes for a seat at the bar and seated around 6:40 PM. Before we were seated, I overheard someone wanting to wait for a seat at the bar and the waiting time was 1 hour and 45 minutes. I highly recommend setting up a reservation. I heard a lot of chatter and seen plenty of reviews speaking highly of the white curry with burnt brisket ends. I had no clue what to expect, but that meal was such a highlight of meals I had while in Portland. I do not eat seafood (have not for a few years) and the broth is made with shellfish, but for this dish I was willing. The dish itself is a five star dish! The dish is well-balanced, flavorful & light. The brisket is absolutely amazing, and this is coming from someone who used to work at a barbecue joint back in the day for a few years. I would recommend this dish to anyone, unless you have a seafood allergy lol. That part is slightly misleading, I did not see anyone mention anything about shellfish and would not have guessed it, assuming the dish was simply just curry and beef. For anyone eyeing this dish, be aware that those with a shellfish allergy cannot indulge. The Bok Choy, not specifically called this on the menu, is DELICIOUS! One of the best I have ever had! You can literally not go wrong with anything at Eem. Came here for lunch on Monday with a group of friends before our drive back home to Seattle. A friend was hyping this place up and it did not disappoint. Everything was fantastic and tasted great! Good portions as well. We almost tried everything on the menu lol and each item was a hit. My best friend had heard a lot of good things about this place, so she took me here when I was visiting her. The verdict : super flavorful, loved and enjoyed everything, I loved how the entree just goes so great together. The sweet and sour chicken so easy to eat, so yummy and no bones! The Yu Choy, so tasty, reminds me of how my momma use to make it, but the only complaint -it had too much stems, not my favorite part. The husband and I finally tried this spot after having it on our PDX list for YEARS. Now I can proudly state that it will officially be on the date day, friends in town, family visiting, etc rotation. We had plans to attend a Cho Wine event that was being hosted at Sun Rice, just a few blocks away. So I looked at my PDX collection of places and realized that Eem was in walking distance, so it was a no brainer, let's go! We walked in on Saturday afternoon and got seated right away. I've heard that this place is always packed in the evening, so I felt blessed to not have to wait. Both the hostess and server were welcoming and kind. The vibe here is a vibe, light bright, airy with huge windows and extra tall ceilings that help flood the space with natural night. Because we had just eaten and it was only the two of us, we opted to only try two dishes, the white curry and bbq fried rice and two cocktails, the arranged marriage and the yes no maybe so. I'm happy to say that everything lived up to our high expectations. The taste of both food and drinks was so perfectly balanced, layered with flavor, full of umami, salty and sweet. Eem in Laos/Thai means 'I'm full' and this is how I feel whenever I'm done here! If I had to pick my last meal on Earth, it would be at Eem. I've been coming here for nearly 10 years, and it never disappoints! My must-orders are the White Curry with their burnt brisket 10/10, the Mushroom Fried Rice 10/10, and the Carpaccio Crudo 10/10. The white curry is unbelievably rich and savory - the burnt brisket completely makes the dish unique! I genuinely dream about it! The mushroom version is rich and savory, while the BBQ fried rice adds a smoky sweetness that makes it hard to stop eating. Trying one of their curries is a must. The brisket burnt ends white curry was easily my favorite dish of the night. The curry itself is light, creamy, and aromatic without feeling heavy, and the brisket burnt ends are incredibly tender and melt in your mouth. The combination of smoky meat with the fragrant curry is just unreal. I really loved my experience here during a late lunch on a Friday. There was no wait, but it was still a little busy. Enjoyed a lot of the surprising flavor combinations of we each dish, except the mushroom fried rice was a bit plain. Beet salad: lemongrass cream had a nice coconut flavor, the chili rice puff gave a nice spiciness and the beets were very tasty. I'd get this dish again! Yum, Fire, Yum! Went to Eem Thai BBQ. We had been hearing a lot of great things about this place, located on Williams Avenue, and decided to check it out for ourselves. Small little venue that packs a punch. Great, lively atmosphere, with a pretty cool bar and dining area. Even with Reservations, our wait was a little bit long, but the staff was friendly and accommodating. This was on a Friday night, so there was a nice crowded buzz going on, so we didn't mind too much. For me, our table was a little small, but the size didn't take away from the food, drinks, or atmosphere. The drink menu had some pretty crazy, fun drink names. We had the "That's It, That's All," a delicious pineapple prerogative, and the "Kingston Fix," served in a giant glass fish. We started out with the Very Spicy Papaya Salad, and unfortunately, while initially tasting delicious, it was so super spicy for us that we could not eat it. Which was a shame, because the first bite was amazing. We followed that with the Smoked Red Curry Sausage, and the Sweet & Sour Fried Chicken, which I had heard so much about, and both were fantastic! Our server was Angie, who made the whole experience, exceptional. My only critique, besides having to wait a little bit long to be seated, was that the plates they gave to put our food onto were the size of a child's tea party set. Came for dinner. This is a popular location and there was a 30-45 minute wait time when we arrived. They text you when you're close to seating time on the waitlist which was nice and allowed us to head downtown to explore Powell's book store in the meantime. There is an inviting and cozy atmosphere, the lighting is dim inside and the servers are friendly and happy to explain the menu. Ordered the white curry with burnt ends and the mushroom fried rice. The white curry was creamy and flavorful, and the burnt ends were tender. It was delicious! The mushroom fried rice was yummy as well, rich umami flavor and seasoned well. Wow, 10 out of 10! The Thai and BBQ fusion was done incredibly well. I've never had BBQ fried rice before, it was even better than I imagined. Big s/o to the serving staff and hostess that let us order drinks while waiting to be seating because it was so hot outside. Great music, great VIBEZ, and delicious/creative bites. This restaurant isn't your typical pad Thai spot. We ordered the White Curry with Brisket Burnt Ends and the Massaman Curry with Smoked Lamb Shoulder -- both were incredibly delicious. The Smoked Pork Belly Krapao was definitely on the Thai‑spicy side, with a real kick, but still very flavorful and enjoyable. The wait time is usually around 1 to 1.5 hours depending on when you go. We went during dinner, so the wait was on the longer side. Our server was wonderful -- she checked in on us often and made sure we were taken care of. I didn't enjoy my initial cocktail, the Life of Luxury, because it tasted too herbal for my liking. She immediately offered to switch it out, and that small gesture really improved my overall experience. read more

We had basically no wait coming in during lunch hour (around 11ish AM), thankfully! The servers were super nice and helpful with their recommendations. The white curry with brisket burnt ends lived up to the hype since we were planning to order than for a long time per recommendations. The curry had a rich coconut-y flavor and the meat was super tender with a distinct smoky taste. The smoked pork krapao had a tangier flavor which was also delicious! The decor inside is very tropical and we loved all the colorful plates. It was a pleasant surprise when our Thai tea and mocktail came in the cutest cups. read more

A bit of a wait, but the neighborhood is super nice to walk around. Great cocktails and a terrific selection of curries. I tried the lamb massaman at the bar tenders recommendation and it didn't disappoint! Smoky, slightly sweet. It went perfectly with my separation anxiety cocktail! Eem was soooo good! I came here for a private event for my friends birthday! The fried rice was amazing and delicious- you have to get it! We also got the white curry and another curry that starts with a letter "m" and that was spicy but delicious! The staff were sweet polite and nice. My second time at Eem and it was worth a visit back! I of course had to start with the brisket fried rice again, and it was phenomenal. I tried the green curry this time and might venture to say I liked it even more than the white, it was incredibly flavorful and I enjoyed the pulled pork.
