Leeks- felt French and fancy eating these savory morsels
    Jeanie N.

Came her last night with a group of 7! To be able to have a great dining spot in the city with a parking lot and open on a Monday is a trifecta! With a group this size, we ordered most of the menu and for a family style restaurant, this was a win. We started with little bites with Madelines which were nice and savory but warning they are teensy. The taro puffs were okay they tasted a bit flat compared to the rest of the dishes. The tacos dorados were a winner, the potato was nice and filling. We got both pastas and we were scraping the plate. The noodle texture was perfectly bouncy and picked up the sauces well. The Khao Soi was the favorite but loved the pesto too with the crunchy peas. The three cup chicken is also a must. The savory flavors and crispness of the chicken and the mushrooms with the sauce are so balanced on a bed of rice. Finally, the steak frites were delicious, the smokiness of steak sliced just right to pickup the salty chimichurri rivals a steakhouse.

Had a really lovely dinner at Xiao Ye, a first-generation American spot with creative dishes that are perfect for sharing. We started with a few small plates: the mini madeleines, tacos dorados, and the pears and beef tartare. The appetizers were the real standouts of the night. Each dish felt unique in flavor and presentation, and it was fun trying such different combinations. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and great for sharing with the table. For mains, we ordered the "khao soi" radiatori and the three cup chicken. The radiatori was our favorite entrée by far. It beautifully blended the familiar, comforting flavors of khao soi with the texture and shape of an Italian pasta, making it both creative and satisfying. It's the kind of fusion dish that really works. The three cup chicken was decent, but a bit underwhelming compared to the other dishes and slightly saltier than we prefer, so it wouldn't be a must-order for us next time. Service was warm and attentive throughout the meal, and the ambiance felt cozy yet modern; perfect for a relaxed dinner with friends or a casual date night. Overall, a great dining experience with especially memorable small plates and creative flavors.

We had a overall lovely experience here. It started with taro puffs which had a thin crusty cover. I love the taro, the sauce didn't feel refreshing. It reminded me of the close cousin of the street spicy sauce I had back in Vietnam. Next were the mini madeleines. These were such crowd pleasers, even my toddler loved it. The creme, the lightly sweet madeleines, it was all delicious. I wished this could be a dessert though. Khao soi radiator was the impressive flavor bomb, we loved and devoured every single bite. The 3 cup chicken was ok for us. The sauce was quite salty and a bit bitter; I thought it could be more elevated. I would say the madeleines and the khao soi radiator were the highlights of the night. We also ordered the butter noodle for my toddler, he enjoyed it. Basically noodle, butter and spinkler of parm cheese.

I thought this place would be a home run given the great reviews but based on the dishes we ordered it was pretty much a strike out in my opinion . We ordered the pears and tartare, moneybag dumplings, Napa cabbage wedge salad, big bean panzenella and the strangolapreti en pozole. The tartare: the dish was overwhelmingly saturated in sesame oil, which took over dish. The pears were cut up in huge awkward chunks which did not make a lot of sense. The dish was mostly pears and sesame oil. The beef appeared to be a garnish rather than the main feature. Moneybag dumplings: this was a special for dumpling week. We got 3 Xiao long bao style pork dumplings for $14. They were good but at ~ $5 a dumpling they should be fucking amazing. Napa cabbage wedge salad: the menu says it comes lightly grilled, which it did but it had an overwhelming smokey flavor that reminded me of a strong mescal. Overall ok. Big bean panzanella: not a fan of this dish because it literally came in a huge pool of olive oil. Way too much olive oil. The strangolapreti: this is supposed to be a type of Italian dumpling made from leftover stale bread, which I've never had before so I don't have anything to compare it to. In this case the dumplings were very dense and not very flavorful at all. I do remember the pork cheeks being good but overall dish was pretty small and underwhelming for $30. The only reason I am giving 3 stars is for the service and atmosphere, however I cannot recommend the food.

For a medium group (about 6 people) it was really easy to make a reservation and it was great they let us take our time for our party to trickle in while seated. The plates were shareable but small so if you're coming here with more than 3 people would likely need two of each dish. They were all delicious - my favorites were the fried taro puffs (so warm and rich), tacos (we were absolutely shocked it was vegetarian), and khao soi radiatori (omg, everything about this was so flavorful and the pasta was perfectly cooked - if I had to order only one dish here I would get this). The vibe inside was both relaxed and slightly upscale so great for a birthday or special occasion. They were so sweet and brought out a free lychee sorbet with a candle for my birthday! Our first server was really nice. There is a $6/per person charge if you bring in a cake fyi. Some of us thought the place was a bit pricy for what was offered, but it was still delicious and I would come back!

Food with very interesting twists! Service was a bit slow but the space was very cute and the mini madeleines & khao soi pasta were worth the hype. They were absolutely delicious and I still think about the dishes months later! I personally would not recommend the chicken liver mousse - it felt like they tried way too hard to suppress the liver flavor by adding vinegar to the pickled onions and making the bread it came on sweet. Because of this, the dish felt unbalanced and the flavors were in direct competition with each other. The casarecce pasta was just mid - wasn't bad but you couldn't really taste the pork short ribs, just the truffles and mushrooms. TBH it tasted like any other truffle pasta. PS: If it's your birthday they give you a free blood orange / grapefruit sorbet (which was delicious - not too sweet and very refreshing)

I was excited to try this place with friends. The server James was really cool and nice! He explained the menu well and helped us order a good amount of food. Other staff seemed stiff but were relatively attentive. The restaurant is cute and the spacing was good, at least at our table it made you feel like you were dining in your own home--we hardly noticed our neighbors. The food is mostly small plates. I really liked the flavors of the tartare. The Khao soi was also tasty and a crowd favorite. The lychee chrysanthemum sorbet was also tasty and light.

Wow, I didn't expect to love this place as much as I did. Came here on a Friday night for dinner. We had no reservations but got seated immediately for a table of two. Everybody that I interacted with from the moment I entered to the moment I left the restaurant were extremely nice and welcoming. Now food wise, every single bite I had was delicious. They do recommend ordering family style so each dish can be shared. We ordered 4 items between the two of us, and it was the perfect amount. From the little bite portion of the menu, we ordered the mini madelines. These were in fact mini but so good. From the cold section, we got the napa cabbage wedge and omg it was phenomenal! This was my favorite dish of the night. It was the perfect amount of textures and flavors; I'll be back just for this salad. From the pastas, we ordered the khao soi radiatori. The flavors on this pasta just worked so well together. And lastly, we tried the grilled pork chop from the warm section of the menu. It was delish, no complaints. Please note that there is a parking lot to the left of the restaurant, but spots are limited.

This was my 4th time coming back to Xiao Ye and now easily one of my top 5 restaurants. Truffle pasta was perfect and lighter than expected. Madeleines...I wish I got 3 plates of them. 3 cup chicken is close to my heart having lived in Taiwan and having Taiwanese family and loved ones, it was very good, just a little too deep of dark flavors and needs more basil, but would still keep ordering it! Taro puffs were unique and had a killer homemade hot sauce sort of sauce on it. Also, some of the best house made ice cream and icy concoctions. Literal perfect marriage of Asian and western style and taste. As always, really great service and some of the best dinnerware I've seen around. Thanks for the brightness in the dining room as well. Sometimes dimness can be a bit much, but not here.

Wow, what a special place! I love the interior and the staff were so friendly. We were first in line for their brunch service and we were greeted so kindly as first-timers. We opted for The Pancake, which was moist, crispy on the edges, and paired well with the Hazelnut Praline add-on. This is definitely a pancake you need to share, as it is quite large and dense, almost cake-ish. I also tried the Kaya Brick Toast, which was insane!!! The combination of flavors was unlike anything I've ever tasted. I would come back just for this. Overall, a great experience and welcoming vibe. I hope to return for their dinner service and experience this place to its fullest!

Cute! Deeply adore the concept of this restaurant and the perspective the chefs are creating from. This is a place you reserve a table for ahead of time. The space is very homey with a coat rack and closet by the door. Lots of cute personal touches in the seating design and dish ware. The food was filling! The waiter recommended choosing 4-5 dishes for the two of us to share. We went with 4 and that was plenty. Fried taro puffs: Not pictured as it was a miss for me. The hot sauce was very off putting with the taro. It was just a strange combo for me that my tastebuds could not get past. Madeleines: I think this appetizer has been on the main menu since day one and I get it. Delightful! The butter it comes with is so light and complements the overall dish well. Napa cabbage wedge: It's huge. We were practically full by the time our last dish came out. I typically despise a wedge, but this one convinced me that there's some merit to it. The use of Napa cabbage was a smart choice and I liked the light dressing and nuggets of nuts and radishes stuffed between. However, I avoided the little bits of sticky fried baby shrimps. It's good that they were light handed with it, but any more and this dish would've been really off putting. I would like to see they transform the texture of the shrimp (puffs or crisps without stickiness) if the chefs insist on using this ingredient. This would make a bite with the shrimp more bearable. Truffle Mac and cheese: the truffle flavor is not overbearing which I really enjoyed. The sauce with the hidden cabbage makes this dish a lot more complex and interesting. Whenever I eat a rich dish like this, I like to cut the palate with some acid or brightness. We had some leftover wedge so I added that in between bites. If I had just straight mac and cheese it would get redundant very fast. For a restaurant that advertises as "family style" I think there could be some improvements on bringing out all the main entrees around the same time. There was a LONG gap between us receiving our cold dish and pasta dish. I'd come back if something new on the menu strikes my interest.

This place was absolutely delicious and completely blew my expectations out of the water. Xiao Ye is a first generation American owned Asian fusion spot with the cutest, coziest vibe. I really loved being able to watch the kitchen in action and see how everything was being cooked. The drinks were great as well, thoughtful and well balanced and paired perfectly with the food. One of the biggest things that stood out to me was learning that the owners help support and pay for their employees' healthcare, which is something I honestly don't hear about often and am always happy to support. We ordered the Khao Soi radiatori and the pozole, plus way too many small bites and absolutely no regrets. Thoughtful food, great drinks, and a place with real heart.

=== Overall === Beautiful place with friendly staff and high quality dishes. Always something new and interesting to try. === Food === I always love their Madelines and currently their three cup chicken if you go for dinner. They used to have a tomato toast that was divine as well. For brunch I'd recommend their biscuits with butter, banana bread, and ham and cheese sandwich. Their matcha latte is very good too, coming from someone who is very picky about their matcha. === Service === Servers are extremely friendly - one of the owners takes the time to talk to people at different tables and check in with you, and their servers were happy to take our group photo. Shoutout to James! === Ambiance === Beautiful decor and I love that you can see the entire kitchen. Bathroom is very clean and I always feel good when I'm dining at Xiao Ye. Would highly recommend!

Special shout out to the kitchen staff for big multitasking energy: watching the game, closing out the place, and firing out some amazing food. Wilder's near-close happy hour offerings were both tasty and generous. Cocktails featured offerings from local distillers that yielded complex flavors but nothing that was "trying too hard" to be artisanal. We walked in at about 6:30pm on a Wednesday night and was kind of greeted by one of the servers. She wasn't too friendly and seemed to be irritated that we said we'd wait for a table as opposed to sitting at the bar. Once seated, that same server came over to try to take our orders and once again seemed irritated that we weren't ready to order. Luckily, another server took over from there and we had a pleasant anniversary meal the rest of the time! Here's everything we tried: Devilish Eggs - This came with 4 deviled eggs and was just okay. The crispy bacon pieces was the best part of this dish! Steak Tartare - This was the main reason we chose this restaurant and we were definitely not disappointed! We spent our first anniversary together in Europe and had so much tartare and this really brought back some wonderful memories for us. The tartare was rich and mustardy, beef flavor was great, and it sort of just melted in your mouth. The crispy chips paired well with the tartare and I can't wait to come back and have this again! Mussels - This was a big bowl of mussels in a white wine garlic sauce with toasted baguettes. Mussels tasted fresh and garlicky with just a bit of funk from whatever cheese they grated on top. The toasted baguettes were so good dipped into that white wine broth. I wish this dish came with skinny fries but it was also so good as is. Would definitely order this again! Field Greens - I asked for this to come out with my meal but it came out about 10 minutes before the entrees came out. It was very light and refreshing. I saved half to have with my meal but most of it was wilted already by the time our mains came out. But it's okay! The fried chicken actually had a small portion of this salad on its plate. I wouldn't have ordered this had I known, so next time will skip the side salad altogether! Fried chicken - I really wanted to like this dish but alas, fried chicken breast is very hard to make juicy. I definitely prefer dark meat because that's harder to mess up. My partner enjoyed it but he doesn't mind dry chicken. The sauces were phenomenal! That mustard sauce was great and the sweet glaze was delicious! The potatoes would have been a lot better if they were smaller to get more of that crust to creamy potato ratio but still okay the way it was. My fiance cleaned this plate up! Brown Butter Cake - This cake was phenomenal! It's hard to mess anything with Brown Butter up so I had really high expectations for this and they certainly did not disappoint. The server was nice enough to throw candles on it since we were celebrating and it really ended our meal on the sweetest note! The restaurant itself is small and cozy. A bit dark and romantic. It really reminded me of the small bistros in France that we frequented while we were out there. We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu!

Service was phenomenal. We were greeted by a lovely young person, who made us aware of the self serve, coffee, and water that was available, then our waiter came and was equally lovely and helpful and gave us great ideas for what to order for breakfast. A third person brought our latte and our breakfast very quickly. They were really on top of everything. I had the vegetable pesto breakfast which came with scrambled eggs and a choice of grits or potato pancake. I had the potato pancake and think it was the right choice. It also came with a giant incredibly delicious buttermilk biscuit. The vegetables themselves were so flavorful that I added no salt or pepper, which is very unusual for me as I love my black pepper, but these were seasoned so lovely that it was not needed. The vegetables included garlic, kale, mushrooms, potatoes, and many other delicious bits. The pesto sauce on it was just perfect. My dining companion had biscuit with both types of gravy, which was really great that they let her split it because she had been undecided. Chicken sausage was tasty and she loved every bit of it. They have both a house, made salsa and jam at the table and I think the jam was raspberry and incredibly tasty. Loved it so much. I will be back here as often as possible!

*3.5, rounded up*…read more Came for breakfast on Mother's Day with a reservation. Checked in ~5min early, and ended up waiting for ~15min past reservation time because the hostess did not let us know we had to check-in *again* when the person parking the car had made it to the restaurant. We ended up with what was, in my opinion, the worst table in the restaurant, after watching several parties of the same size seated at 'better' tables, all of which had arrived after the driver, who was there less than 2 min later (so still prior to scheduled time) after I was at the hostess stand, and we were seated waiting in direct view of the hostess. PLEASE be clear in your communication about this policy: it was neither clearly posted anywhere nor voiced - it wasn't a huge inconvenience, but I would have much preferred being sat in the main area. The restaurant areas are each different: the bar area itself is the least interesting: several seating booths and the bar, closest to the bathrooms. The main dining area has more seating, a fireplace and the self serve coffee bar - I LOVE this feature, and even saw a Wonderwood Springs mug. Shoutout to my favorite neighborhood merriment maker, Mike Bennett (if you haven't been there, go. Do the mini golf... but this review isn't about WW, so... moving on) We ordered a couple of adult beverages: the Bloody Mary was *fantastic* and I'm grateful to the server for suggesting to mix the two infused vodkas I was torn between. Hot peppered pickle was *chef's kiss* and gave me all the things I crave in a bloody: slice, twang, umami. The mix was the perfect consistency (nothing worse than a great tasting Bloody Mary that's too thick/thin), and it didn't get too watered down as breakfast went on. Baby Daddy's iced "Shed's on Fire" was... alright. The highlight was the espresso bean that he didn't even get because I stole it (Mother's Day... amirite?). I'm not sure if it was the 151 or if it's because I don't drink much anymore, but all I could taste was the alcohol, so I didn't feel it was very balanced - I would have preferred a more coffee forward taste, especially since our server said the iced version was made you cold brew. I had anticipated it being stronger in coffee flavor. I'm a sucker for anything crab, so when we were told the special was a crab cake Benedict, I was sold (so was my kiddo) - didn't really look at the rest of the menu, and if I'm honest, I'm kind of sad I didn't. It's not that the CCB was bad, but it was just alright/nothing to write home about. I couldn't tell if the crab used was Dungeness, fresh, or something from a can, there wasn't much flavor to the cake itself (it was honestly overpowered by the egg & hollandaise combination) and made me want to go home and try to make my own (Dungeness) cakes. The highlight of my breakfast was the grits, when they first came from the back: note to future me/the person reading this reciew: eat them first/fresh & hot- by the time I came back to them, they had cooled & congealed *sad panda* My son is a culinary student (has studied at Johnson & Wales) said the same thing about the cakes - lack of flavor, needs something additional, couldn't tell what type of crab was used, etc and was also disappointed. The highlight for him was the potato cakes, and I'm pretty sure he is going to try to replicate those at home now!! All in all, we weren't exactly disappointed in our Tin Shed visit, but I'm not sure it tops the list of our favorite Portland breakfast/brunch spots. I'm sure we'll come back, but next time I'll try something on menu and get a biscuit - those b*+ches looked dang amazing on everyone's plates as they walked out of the kitchen!!

We recommended it to the table next to us, and they liked it too! - Mushroom soup was so smooth and delicious! Perfect mushroom flavor without tasting like dirt. - Beef Tounge was not for me (I really hate capers ). Also was not a fan, personally, of Blood Sausage. Hubby loved both so if thats your thing, you'd probably really like them! - The rest of the Asado Argentina for Two was AMAZING! - I put the chimicurri on everything and they were so nice and brought me an extra bowl of it AND extra togo!! Thank you!! - The wine selection was incredible! I had the '21 Sangiovese and it was so so good. - Our server was very familiar with the menu and gave us such a good description of the specials and each dish we asked about! - The rest of the staff was very nice and they took away dishes and cleaned our table (literally wiped away crumbs) from previous ones so quick. - The overall vibe was so cool! I really want to sit outside next time we visit! I will be recommending this place to everyone from now on!

Oh, the joy of Ox…read more It's become a staple -- the kind of place that quietly works its way into your rotation and then suddenly holds weight in your personal ranking whether you meant for it to or not. As of right now, it sits at number one for my dad and a few of my friends alike. For me? I'm not ready to crown it just yet. I need a few more visits, a few more comparisons against my usual haunts. But it's up there. No question. When I first moved to Portland almost a year ago, this was one of the spots that kept coming up. Highly recommended, spoken about with a kind of confidence that usually means it's either overhyped or the real deal. We went for Mother's Day. Then again for Father's Day. My parents loved it -- the kind of love that doesn't need explanation -- and honestly, I get it. The service is immaculate. Thoughtful, attentive, but never hovering. You feel taken care of in a way that's increasingly rare -- like the front of house actually wants you to have a good time, not just turn the table. There's a real sense of pride in what they're doing. The team feels aligned, almost symbiotic. Front of house lifting up back of house, back of house delivering in a way that makes that support feel earned. Whether that relationship is perfect behind the scenes or not, it reads as seamless from the outside. And the food -- it's just excellent. Cooked perfectly, consistently, without unnecessary theatrics. No foams, no gels, no overworked plating trying to prove something. Just honest, confident cooking over fire. The kind of food that reminds you how good simple things can be when they're done right. It's indulgent in the best way. The kind of meal that might even tempt a few vegans back to the dark side -- at least for a night. It's not cheap. Let's be clear about that. I don't go here casually, and I'm not pretending I do. Thanks, Mom and Dad. But it's the kind of place that's worth saving up for -- not just for the food, but for the experience. For some people, this might be a random Wednesday night. For most of us, it's something you plan for. And when you do, it delivers. It's special without making a big deal about being special. And that's exactly why it works.

Quick read: YES, COME HERE!…read more We took a chance on this place when some unexpected family flew into town and wanted a good breakfast. This was the first spot open long enough for us to still squeeze one in. As soon as we walked in, we noticed a sign proudly supporting inclusion and justice. As a Mexican queer woman, seeing that right away felt genuinely welcoming. We grabbed a table, got our menus, and I immediately noticed the Community Meal option-where anyone can come in and get a meal, no questions asked, free of cost. Our server overheard us talking about it and was ready to offer it with complete respect. We were the only ones in this restaurant and they were okay with providing meals for free if we needed them. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of place this is. When ordering, we learned they don't even have a freezer everything is fresh and locally sourced. Big win. One of us ordered the French toast, and wow... I wish I had too. It was beautiful, topped with nuts for the perfect crunch, and made with brioche bread. PHENOMENAL. I had a bite (and got the leftovers), and it was just as amazing cold. I ordered the chorizo breakfast sandwich with a side of tots, and even the quality of the oil they fry with must be top-notch because those tots had the perfect crispy outside with soft, fluffy insides. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros, which I barely saw before he devoured it and immediately went into a happy food coma. We also had biscuits and gravy--slightly sweeter than usual, but still delicious. I'll absolutely be bringing friends here for future breakfast dates. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and come try their food!
