I was absolutely in food heaven here. We made a reservation in advance, and wow, I'm so glad we did! We were provided with complimentary tomato bisque in cute little cups to start off the meal. It had a nice, light spicy kick that immediately got things going. We ordered the clam chowder with bone marrow, and this was absolutely the best clam chowder we have ever had. The dish comes with a cooked bone marrow on top that you're meant to scrape into the chowder, along with five medium clams still in their shells. Remove everything from the shells, scrape that glorious bone marrow into the chowder, and give it a really good stir. Keep the bone in the bowl for the extra flavor. Then enjoy what might be the best clam chowder of your life. We also ordered the beef tongue, which was another amazing appetizer. The combination of horseradish, tiny potato salad, capers, crispy little pork rind pieces, and the sauce on top of the beef tongue was SO flavorful. I was, indeed, back in divine food heaven. For our entrees and sides, we ordered the green beans, skirt steak, and pork chop. The green beans had an Asian-inspired preparation with fish sauce, cashews, and Thai basil. They were incredibly flavorful, with the Thai basil adding a nice freshness. The skirt steak was perfectly cooked to medium and seasoned beautifully with smoky flavors. The accompanying chimichurri added a fresh, herby contrast. And then there was the pork chop, which was a hugeeeee surprise! Our waitress told us it was one of their most popular dishes, and now I understand why. It was huge, perfectly cooked, beautifully grilled, and served with a slightly sweeter sauce that worked so well with the pork. Authors & James Beard award-winning Chefs Gabrielle Quiñónez & Greg Denton have honed Portland's love of all things local (seasonal & freshly sourced ingredients) within a menu that maintains integrity across seasons. I sampled five courses, for take-out this visit - overall (service/ambiance, along with food degradation during transport), I'd give 3 stars, but across multiple visits (otherwise dine-in), restaurant maintains 4 stars. Servers are taking the stars for service. A favorite of mine, their BELGIAN ENDIVE SALAD is seasonally updated with cherries/sweet atop the usual endive/bitter, bleu/tart/smooth, and the texture is something fun with candied pecans & mild vinaigrette (buttery EVOO) blending with each electrifying bite. This presentation was not its freshest (endive), but could have turned during transportation. The reason I'll keep coming back: CLAM CHOWDER w SMOKED MARROW BONE is similarly elemental - each ingredient shining in its own right, but symphonic altogether. The soup itself is thin - not too filling, but incredibly rich in flavor (a touch of white wine? maybe B&W pepper?), showcasing large delicately cooked clams & melted marrow that seasons tiny cubed carrots & potatoes, onion & pork - sliced jalapeño leaves a back-end heat that's lasting & warm. This is the place you order a meat with some fat on it, so bring some friends and plan for sharing. Anything cooked on the Ann Arbor grill is better-than-basic, but I'd rather a filet that's pan-seared & oven-finished (although DO ASK for their signature Bordelaise, which is a gorgeous compliment to steak with red wine, and counterpoint to their exceptional chimichurri). To pair - FRIED RUSSET POTATOES - rustic, not a touch overcooked, but entirely original & delicious with their with horseradish aioli + dash of dill. The beef tongue a la vinagreta was absolutely dynamite. Each piece of carpaccio was cut to the perfect thickness, which let it stand up beautifully to the punchiness of the spicy horseradish, acidic caper vinaigrette, earthy fried sweetbreads, and creamy ensalada rusa (potato salad). The clam chowder came out next, and while it was good as a standalone chowder, it was the one course that fell a little short for me. With smoked bone marrow in the mix and at the fairly high price point, I expected it to be more of a knockout, but it unfortunately just did not quite come together the way I hoped as the piece of marrow felt more decorative than additive to the flavors overall. Of course, we had to order one of the asados, so we opted for one of my absolute favorite cuts in the skirt steak and it did not disappoint! The steak was incredibly tender, cooked to perfection, and paired beautifully with their house made chimichurri sauce. It came so highly recommended on Reddit and many other diners ordered it but neither my party nor I cared for it. The halibut was good but didn't stand out and the maple glazed carrots weren't to my taste. What completely won us over was the tres leches cake. It is one of the most delicious and most memorable desserts we've ever had. It was one of the reasons we decided to give the restaurant a second shot. I'd get this again and not share! - Spinach and Ricotta Gnudi- also surprisingly delicious. I don't know why I broke it up. Everything was good. Outstanding! I started with a half portion of the little gem salad and then had a medium-rare filet mignon with some red wine. It's one of those salads that makes you think you'd be a lot healthier if salad was always this good. And the steak? Perfectly cooked. The chili ponzu, was too hot and overpowered the oyster, so we used the ther two.- 5* Asado Argentino for Two grilled short rib, house chorizo & morcilla sausages, skirt steak*, sweetbreads, fried potatoes*, green salad Beef Ribeye Steak* 16 oz : $135 Everything was good, with the skirt steak and sweetbreads being exceptional. Maybe one of my new favorite restaurants. They were able to accommodate a walk in for two upon opening, with a 15 minute wait. However, the walk-in for three behind us was going to have to wait up to two hours on a Saturday night. You'll want a reservation. SCENE Super cozy - they have a blazing fire grill and ambient lightings. There's bar seating near the grill and another bar at the actual full bar. They have tables in the back, front, and outdoor seating. FOOD I very much enjoyed my meal here. The portions are pretty large and served family style. They recommended about five items total for two people which felt spot on. We started with an amuse bouche - potato leek soup followed by a large bowl of clam chowder with smoked bone marrow. This was a lovely clam chowder; rich but not too heavy on the cream - not as smoky as I expected. I probably could've ate this with a baguette and been happy, but I'm greedy so we ordered more. We moved onto the crab bruschetta, which was delicious and fresh: four pieces of toast with a mountain of crab and avocado and radish - a really delicious vinaigrette to boot. Next came the fried potatoes with a horseradish, aïoli, and dill; a beet salad I could eat every day; and maple, glazed, heirloom carrots with truffle pistachios, and chèvre. TIP: They do half orders if you want to order two things, but you can also do a half order if you want to order three things - that's what we did. I highly recommend half order so you can try a lot of things. The portions are huge - you likely won't miss the other half. Our main courses were phenomenal. I highly recommend the ribeye, but be sure to order it the way you like. Mine was a little bloodier than I like so we sent it back no problem. 16 ounces of meat is a lot to me, but it was so good I was happy to take them leftovers. I'd also recommend the Alaskan halibut served on the bone. It's garlicky and lemony bright the way I like it. I had a sip of a cocktail and it was delicious. My glass of pinot went perfect with the meal. I honestly knew the beef was gonna be amazing. It's Argentinian. But the dessert was a fantastic way to end the meal - vanilla bean tres leches with dulce de leche and strawberry - perfect for sharing. SERVICE We had a couple of servers and all were really great about making us feel taken care of. We didn't know they did half orders so that was nice to learn and allowed us to try more than we intended. The bartender took our dessert order. Unfortunately, they did forget to put in our drink orders and we didn't receive our cocktails until we were pretty much done eating but we still enjoyed them. I got the Ox Blood cocktail and I loved it! The tomato and burrata salad was a necessity to balance out an otherwise heavy meal. The flash fried green beans were good at first but became a little too overpowering for me. The sauce was really tangy and sweet but my friend enjoyed it a lot. Y'all. We have NEVER had a bad meal or service at Ox. This place is off the hook, they came back better than ever after the fire that took them out of commission for a while. I love that the meal always starts with a little taster of their butternut squash soup-it's perfect for the start of fall with spices and it's just like a warm hug on a perfectly crisp fall day. I wish I could buy an entire gallon and eat it every night! We always get the skirt steak cause it's perfectly cooked as they state between medium and medium rare. The flake salt they sprinkle across adds a depth of flavor that's unparalleled. The spinach and ricotta gnudi has brown butter almonds and a Gorgonzola sauce- are you kidding me? That shit was a crunchy creamy delight. We also tried the mushrooms and Swiss chard for the first time and I am so glad we did. Specifically the trio of the mushrooms with the skirt steak and the 2020 Tito Zuccardi Malbec/Cab Franc. The wine brought out the mushroom umami flavors with the earthiness of the steak and it was the perfect pairing. We never leave ourselves room for dessert but it is birthday time and they brought us each a scoop of the most divine chocolate ice cream with sesame seeds and crunchy honeycomb. I devoured it. I was not hungry but the chocolate flavor was strong, and the honeycomb was sweet and the sesame brought an unexpected, and welcomed flavor! It was a special treat! Being small and intimate you can see the wood fire oven and the volume is low so you can have an easy conversation at your table. Staff are attentive without being overbearing, and are all friendly and genuinely feel that they are happy you're there. Nothing but love for you, Ox. We came to Ox for my boyfriends birthday as it has been a place on our "Need to Try" list for a while now. One of the things that we bonded over early in our relationship was our love of GOOD food - and there is no lack of good food in Portland. However, Ox, is different. This place, is 10/10. We had a reservation (though they do take walk in's) and while we were waiting the staff was so kind and lovely. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Then we sat on the patio which was GORGEOUS, and felt very European. The walls covered with jasmine flowers that smelled incredible.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waiter was so attentive, educated on the menu, and helpful when we had questions. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He also made sure to check-in about the temperature in case we wanted the heater turned on.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had not a single complaint about any of the food that we had. One of the best dining experiences I have had in the Portland area in a very long time. Highly recommend coming here if you are in the mood for an elevated steakhouse night with classic Portland flair. The first "wow" moment for me was when we walked in and were greeted for our reservation- coat check was complementary! A small gesture but something that made an impression. Our water glasses were never empty, literally never. Every single person working was so knowledgeable and welcoming. Had a wonderful meal here, the restaurant is cozy and the wood fired grill is in the open to observe which I thought was fun! Was reassured that they have taken measures like dedicated fryers to make sure celiacs could still enjoy their menu. We got the carrots, Brussel sprouts, potatoes, rib eye and pork chop. We arrived at The Ox and immediately felt unwelcome, as two staff members at the bar stared at us when we walked in. Before arriving, we had checked online and saw that several reservations were available, so we were surprised by what happened next. When we checked in, the hostess and another staff member quietly spoke to each other while looking for a table, then told us that no tables were available. Given the interaction and the lack of hospitality, we decided to leave. The drive wasn't worth it, and we ended up dining at another steakhouse where we felt much more welcome. read more

Such a great steakhouse. The food is consistent, the service is wonderful, and we always leave thinking about our next visit. They start off dinner with complimentary soups that are fantastic. We always get the oysters, bone marrow clam chowder (yes it's as good as it sounds), and ribeye and it's solid every time. read more

This one has been on my list for quite some time and I finally got to try it out for a friends birthday. Loved the ambiance, and decor. Plenty of plants hanging, light was dim but bright enough to see. The service was excellent. Staff was attentive and on top of things for the whole evening. We were brought a delicious leek soup to start that was incredible. We got the Asado Argentine for two, along with clam chowder and few other items. The clam chowder was knock your socks off amazing! One of the best I've had. Super light, not thick and heavy. A must try. I thought the potatoes would be what I loved, but they were a bit thick for my taste, but definitely still worth the try. All of the meats we got were cooked perfect! Overall, we would definitely come again. I'm dying to try the Cowboy Ribeye. If I could give a half star, this would def be 4.5. read more

Love this spot! Great level of service and while it's a small restaurant it didn't feel overly loud or crammed. Both fun and impressive that they cook everything over the open fire in the kitchen area. Everything we ordered was amazing. We ordered a beef empanada, Dungeness crab bruschetta, smoked bone marrow clam chowder, 20 oz skirt steak with chimichurri, a medley of trumpet mushrooms and asparagus and, of course, had to find room for chocolate olive oil cake with a rum marscapone and chocolate sauce. This was absolutely too much food- we leaned in for the bday celebration and ended up with leftovers and stuffed bellies. Would love to return to try more of the menu! read more

Went here to meetup with friends. You have to make reservations way in advance with this place. Its really good service and everything we all ordered was delicious n spectacular. The bone marrow clam shower is probably one of the best ive ever had and its different. It doesnt make my stomach sick as sometimes with dairy I feel sick but with this I did not. The steaks we ordered turned out perfect and the sides was good. I see why people come here and why you must make reservations here. The ambiance is clean and brick dark moody lighting as it made it felt nice n romantic which I love. This is one of the best steak houses I would say in Portland for sure. read more

My friend set up this prix fixe menu here at the Ox because there were 16 guys having dinner. The restaurant is a beautiful restaurant but because we were such a large party we had our meal in a private dining area which has its own bar and restroom. We had our own bartender and server serving us. This restaurant is well known for its Argentinian cuisine especially the beef dishes. We had about 13 courses including dessert which admittedly was quite overwhelming. The evening started off with a shot of tequila followed by a glass of Argentinian Melbac wine. Most of the dishes were very good but the item that I enjoyed the most was the grilled beef ribeye. It was tasty without being too salty and it was cooked perfectly to a medium rare. I think the next time I visit this restaurant I would like to try their dishes off the menu instead. read more

I would travel back to Portland just to eat here again. Great food! Great service! I didn't have a reservation so there was a wait for a table but I was able to wait at their lounge to have a drink. Chatted with the bartender who was really nice. Ordered the flank steak and clam chowder. The clam chowder was some of the best in my life!! The bone marrow addition was such a delicious surprise!
