This is my second time booking at Terra Mae for a special event. I booked online and got a reservation at the time I wanted. I put in a special note regarding the event for my party. When we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome by bringing my guest a drink on the house for their retirement celebration. I knew the menu but tried some new things! We shared everything. My favorite item I have to order each time is the Tuna Tartar. Its favors are rich but delicate. The presentation is perfect and my guest was impressed. I got the dumplings for her but if I had to skip something I'd do those. They were good but compared to all the other items we had, they were lacking. The only thing not pictured is our wagu braised with sweet potato. That was phenomenal. It pulled apart and melted in your mouth with every bite. We ended with two very different deserts, the strawberry mochi and whipped crem brûlée type desert. Both were tasty. Price range for all plus three alcoholic drinks was $165 not including tip. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Terra Mae last Saturday night, and it ended up being such a lovely experience. I booked our table through Resy, but our evening started with a small hiccup--my husband's flight was delayed about 1.5 hours. I called the restaurant to see if it was possible to move our reservation to 9:15 PM, and the staff member who answered was incredibly kind and accommodating. She adjusted our reservation without hesitation, which I really appreciated. We arrived a little before 9 PM and immediately loved the atmosphere. The space had great energy--good background music, a stylish crowd, and attentive staff who even offered to hang our coats when we walked in. A really sweet touch: the restaurant surprised us with complimentary sparkling wine to celebrate our anniversary. It made the night feel even more special. Our server explained that the menu is designed for sharing and recommended ordering about 4-5 dishes, which worked perfectly for us. Terra Mae is a premiere and upscale dining destination in the PDX area for a nice date or celebration. This unique Portuguese-Japanese fusion spot is located on the 2nd floor of the Cascade Hotel and Wellness Spa. Reservations are highly recommended and hard to come by, so plan accordingly. To get here, street parking will be your main option. Inside, they have a gorgeous and dimly lit setup with tons of seating. For their menu, they have a range of unique items to choose from. Wifey and I opted to go for a spread consisting of the Milk Bread Buns, Mentaiko Udon, Alcatra, Dumplings, and the Duck Duck Rice. We got a reservation for 9pm on a Saturday for this place which I would not recommend. The restaurant was packed & extreme busy. The restaurant is on the second floor & the interior was beautiful, but the service was mixed. The hostesses were super knowledgeable about the menu item & gave us recommendations, but our server was lacking. The food was delicious but on the pricier side. We got the mentaiko udon, dumplings, duck duck rice, and the lobster bao. It took an hour for all four dishes to come out. Apparently there was a separate menu for dessert that the servers offer after the meal but our server never offer to us. I don't leave many reviews but this was exceptional and I'm surprised there aren't more reviews. Ordered 5-6 dishes and each one was delicious. We got the tuna tartare, perfect level of truffle. The green bean tempura perfectly cooked and seasoned. The tonkatsu sandwich (dip it in the udon sauce). The Udon was the unexpected highlight, I'm usually someone that likes some sort of protein with any dish but the flavor was incredible and we used the leftover sauce for dipping everything. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was great but we were a bit underwhelmed by the food. We've heard great reviews and also mixed reviews from friends that have dined here, so we wanted to try it out for ourselves. The small plates were good, such as the bread + butter, fries and green bean tempura. The bread comes with two milk buns and three small schmears of butter. The fries were well seasoned and came with a nice dipping sauce. The tempura was really light, crisp and flavorful. We were interested in getting the tonkatsu also, but didn't get it since they didn't allow for adjustments/substitutions but heard good things about that. For the entrees, we got the duck duck rice, lobster bao and scallops mozambique. The duck duck rice had a nice crust at the top and overall was ok. I desired more spice or some sort of sauce to drizzle on it. The lobster and caviar bao sounded good in theory but I felt like the bao buns took away from the flavor of the lobster and caviar so we ended up not eating the buns with it. The seared scallops were served with grits and I thought the scallops were nicely seared. The dish was rich and creamy but due to personal preference, I felt it needed something to add a pop of freshness or acidity. The rice custard with sugar crust dessert we had was reminiscent of crème brûlée. Since this spot was all over Instagram, I decided to give in to the hype and chose it for our anniversary dinner. We were promptly greeted and seated, and the space is beautiful -- bright, with colorful murals and plenty of room between tables. I stumbled across a review from Keith Lee (yes, that food influencer) calling this spot the best food in Portland -- and obviously, I had to see for myself. The kitchen moved like a well-oiled machine, and we thoroughly enjoyed our server. The restaurant makes great use of the space with a variety of seating options, and not one bad seat in the house. It being a special occasion we of course ordered a ton of food. Started off with salad and bread buns, the herb butter and duck skin butter are especially great. Instead of traveling over July 4th weekend, I spent a whole day at Cascada: breakfast and coffee at Alberta Street Cafe, time in the soaking pools and a massage at their spa, followed up by a belated birthday celebration dinner at Terra Mae. We were placed at a high table with a step-up into the booth seating, so if you need a certain type of table for accessibility reasons it might be worth calling ahead. The menu is Japanese-Portuguese fusion. Unusual, but everything on the menu was approachable and understandable. The staff was able to thoroughly explain the menu and each dish, both when we asked questions while ordering as well as when each dish came out. Service was well-timed. Between two of us, we ordered: -Milk buns -Wasabi salad (maybe my favorite actually) -Black cod fish & chips (good but normal) -Hand roll of the day -Teres major -Two desserts, a mochi and an olive oil cake (one was comped for the bday - very kind) -Cafe de Arroz (not my palate's preference) It was a good amount of food. After a relaxing afternoon in the thermal springs, I made a reservation for dinner. It's a beautiful space. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I am not much of a bread and carb girl, I would rather save my appetite for the main course, but honestly, these rules were some of the best I've ever had. The Fisherman's tasted similar to a Thai curry and had a wide selection of seafood--good if you want to split a main seafood dish between two people. She was going over the free birthday treats and she said "we usually don't include this but there's Basque cheesecake with ube" which we took it as free because she listed it along with the other free items. After we finished most of the cheesecake, she came back and asked have we decided on the free birthday treat, so we were mad confused, like what? At that point, we felt obligated to get another "free" dessert. But why ask us for dessert twice? It felt super sneaky and maybe she was trying to squeeze some more tip out of us? Terra Mae is really, REALLY great! Miss The Underground? Come here to see 90% of the same staff. Terra Mae was started by the head chef of The Underground, and most of the old staff being here speaks volumes. Ambiance is bright, bustling, and a bit overwhelming, if I'm to be honest. The music is too loud, in my opinion, but it wasn't enough to prevent conversation at a reasonable volume level. The staff is superb! They really excel at taking care of patrons, and are extremely knowledgeable and professional. We were very grateful for our waitress's recommendations. How was the food? It was excellent on the whole! The biggest standout of the evening was the sashimi sampler special. I had no idea how good sashimi could be, but Terra Mae's is hands down, the BEST I've ever had. My dining companion had the same impression. We both wished they had a full sushi menu because of how great their sashimi was. The octopus salad was equally impressive. After having Terra Mae's, I realized I'd NEVER had properly cooked octopus before. The confit duck legs were also stunning. Insanely tender, crispy skin, and brilliant flavor. The one disappointment was with the milk rolls. We had high expectations based on all of the glowing reviews, specifically for these, but ours were nothing noteworthy. They tasted like plain old ordinary, dry, chain grocery store bakery rolls. The accompaniments were great (orange butter anybody?), but they were ultimately disappointing. Desserts were wonderful, spectacular, in fact. The Basque cheesecake with ube was such an amazing combination, and the orange cake was also superb. One of my friends has a few dietary restrictions so I was already thinking about the tasty items I would order on my next visit. Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Terra Mae a handful of weeks ago. The interior pictures do not do this place justice on the amount of skylights are in it to make it airy and inviting. As for the food - we were impressed with everything, I especially loved the duck duck (crispy) rice! The variation in food choices can potentially make people hesitate although we joined the right couple who knew exactly what they wanted. It was fun dining between 4 although nice restaurants such as these always have to make the bread/carb offerings so small. Admittedly, we were still a little peckish after our meal so we went to another spot for a nightcap beer. Terra Mae has been on my radar since shortly after opening, and I'm glad I finally made the time to go. What a lovely Christmas Eve date with my partner. We sat near the nearly open kitchen, which is always my preferred seat, especially when BOH and FOH are humming. From the start, it was clear the place was well run -- the GM was on the floor, and the dining room felt calm even though we were there toward the tail end of dinner service. We ordered the full meal at once and left the pacing to the staff. That's not something I usually do, but it felt right here, and they handled it beautifully. The meal unfolded naturally, with each course arriving when it made sense. Nothing felt rushed or stacked, even later in the evening. We ordered: Octopus Salad, Negi Toro Handroll (not pictured), Mentaiko Udon, Duck Duck Rice, and Lamb Ribs. The food was excellent -- thoughtful, balanced, and satisfying without being heavy. All of the dishes were composed with restraint and intention: no unnecessary flourishes, just confident cooking and strong flavors that worked well together. Cocktails were equally solid. A Sazerac (half rye, half cognac) was properly balanced and paired nicely with the menu. This is often my litmus test for any bar program, and this was one of the best in town. Service throughout the night was attentive, calm, and well paced. When a whole snapper we had ordered ended up being 86'd, it was handled professionally and without disrupting the flow of the meal, which I appreciated. At the end of the night, I asked our server to pass along my compliments to the chefs. The food and the overall experience warranted it. What a gem! I've been on a Yuzu kick and the cocktail they offer definitely satisfied. It was perfect after a hot steam. I wasn't big on the Linguica Croquettes, but others seem to like them. Terra Mae definitely lived up to the rave reviews it had been getting thus far. Came in on a Tuesday evening with some friends to try it out, and we had an amazing meal. Reservations are available and weren't that hard to get ahead of time which is always a plus in my book. Atmosphere is great. We had been to Cascade once before to enjoy the spa and the dining "vibe" is equally as nice. The space is bright and vibrant while also moody with a lot of low accent lighting to go along with the large natural sky lights. Overall it just felt fresh, and the seating and table settings were also quite nice. Service throughout the night was also very on point. Not too pushy but also attentive and friendly. Felt like we were well taken care of which is all you can ask for. Now on to the food. Everything was tasty. They've crafted a menu of lovely bites that were easy to share and delicious. One note, a lot of the dishes are best split 4 ways so if you have a larger party you may need to order doubles of things. I would say the majority of dishes are on the smaller side...but would encourage going as a group to get to try more items. This restaurant is beautiful. Walking in the dim lighting and how the tables and seating were arranged was so visually pleasing. It didn't feel overly crowded or squished. This restaurant is on the second floor, so we took the elevator up and was kindly greeted by the staff and got our coats checked in and was promptly brought over to our seats and was given a cute card from Terra Mae staff wishing my partner and I a happy anniversary. The card was a photograph of the mural they have in the restaurant. The waitress came over and let us know the food is served family style and the chef courses of whatever we order to come out. They recommended about 3-4 dishes per person. My partner and I love trying new places and getting to nibble in a little of everything, so we ordered 9 dishes and thought it was the perfect amount of food to be split. I ordered a yuzu cocktail. Super bubbly and refreshing, just how I love my cocktails! You could actually taste the yuzu rather it just being a yuzu "essence." We then ordered the milk buns/block cod rilettes. This was their milk buns with 3 different butters and 1 pate spread. Oh my gosh if I could petition all restaurants to do milk buns instead of regular bread, I'd be in heaven. This was AMAZING. So fluffy, and each butter elevated that bite. Yum! For small plates we ordered the mentaiko udon and linguica croquettes. It came with a perfectly runny egg to mix into the udon cream sauce goodness. I personally prefer more sauce to noodle ratio, which was spot on here. But my partner would have preferred if there were more udon available to soak up the sauce. I thought the flavor of the mentaiko showed through nicely in this dish. The croquettes were a let down. I love crunchy foods especially croquettes! but I found the meat inside to be a little too crumbly.. the meat was on the drier side and the flavor was kind of lacking. We ate a few pieces to give it a fair chance and ultimately didn't finish that dish. For the raw items we ordered yellowtail crudo, steelhead sashimi, and the beef tartare. Listen, I am a beef tartare girly through and through but what stole the show during dinner were these two raw fish dishes. The fish was sliced thinly but still had a supple bite I wasn't expecting. My experience with seafood crudos has always been inconsistent super thin pieces of fish that falls kinda flat. So I'm always hesitant to order it at restaurants but I am SO glad we got to try these dishes. They had nice bites of apples and almonds that paired nicely with the fish. As for the steelhead sashimi, it had this amazing wasabi cream sauce. I'd come back just for these two dishes! The beef tartare had a great flavor, but I would have preferred a different crunchy vehicle for it. The chips were too salty in my opinion and it kinda masked being able to appreciate the tartare itself. That or maybe there needed to be a larger ratio of beef tartare to chip. Still enjoyable nonetheless. For our large plate we got the duck duck rice. I think this dish didn't live up to my expectations. I did get pieces of the pork belly but I just felt like it wasn't a very cohesive dish it tasted a little underwhelming like an okay fried rice. I was hoping to taste the oils from the duck or the pork belly which are very prominent flavors, especially in fried rice. But I just very impressed and thought it lacked flavor. Ginger ice cream was delicious! I'm not a huge ginger dessert or apple dessert but my partner lovesss apple. I'm glad we tried it because this was a perfect sweet but not too sweet dessert! Overall, I loved the ambiance and the service was phenomenal. We had staff coming to explain each dish and sauce thoroughly, refill our drinks and ask how each dish was. The food had a strong start, with a few things I probably wouldn't order again. But my partner and I both agreed we'd love to come back and try more things on the menu that they ran out of! For all the food we got, the price was pretty fair for how full we left. read more

We have been to Terra Mae twice now and the service has been great both times and the food is so good. The ambience is really nice and great for a date night or special occasion. We have tried several things on the menu and the 3 standouts to me are: 1) bluefin otoro sashimi 10/10-such a high quality fish that melts in your mouth and with the sauce...omg. Perfect bite and worth getting. 2) Mentaiko udon - so delicious and creamy. Layers of flavor. This is a go to dish. (Tip: if you get the tonkatsu, run it through the sauce, you are welcome). 3) Flat iron steak. I prefer this over the teres major and so good. (Make sure to get the duck duck rice cause it goes well with it and would be nice if it came with even a scoop of white rice). Another tip: save the sauce from the otoro and gives the steak another layer of delicious flavor. Other choices tried: sunomono: crisp and good (a touch heavy on the red wine vinegar for me but is good; milk buns- really good with the butters and worth getting; dumplings is another good dish.; negi toro handroll is tasty but not a replacement to try the otoro in the sashimi; wasabi salad-it's a good salad. This is definitely a place to go and enjoy and I will go back to try some other things Might be my favorite restaurant currently. read more

I've seen this place all over social media and everything looked so good, so we had to try it. It's on the second floor of a new trendy hotel. The space is gorgeous! Very green, lots of light, and a colorful painting across one of the walls. Our server was incredible! She was so friendly and gave us lots of recommendations. A+ We both started with a cocktail, which were tasty and beautifully presented. Everything on the menu sounded good, so it was hard to narrow down, but we knew we wanted to start with the milk bread buns and I suggest you do as well. They were so fluffy and light and the trio of butters were all delicious and fun to try. I liked them all, but we both agreed that our favorite was the herb butter. We moved on to the french fries, which weren't my favorite. They were too heavily seasoned and not really crispy enough. I did like the sauce that they were served with, but I would skip them next time. We also got an order of the dumplings, which were crispy and delicious, it was easy to see why they are popular. For mains we started with a side of carrots, which may have been my favorite dish of the night. I love a well executed carrot dish and this one was exceptional. We got the Duck Duck Rice, which had a beautiful crispy top and was such a delicious savory dish. I definitely recommend it! We also had the Alcatra, a braised beef cheek served with leeks, which I also recommend. The beef cheek was so soft and fork tender. It was a little heavy on the clove for me, but I still couldn't stop eating it. We ended with the butter mochi coconut cake, which was good, but felt like it was missing something - maybe a fruit or something with a bit of texture, a sesame crisp? I think they have an opportunity to step up their dessert game a bit. Overall, the vibe and service were incredible. The food was also really good, especially if you are a bit adventurous and enjoy well seasoned food. The prices are a little high for some of the items ($15 for cucumbers seems steep), but reasonable for others. It's definitely worth a try for date night or a fun happy hour with friends. read more
