I've looked forward to writing this review for a number of weeks now... ashamed I haven't done it sooner. Wilder. WOW. JUST WOW. This is another one of those rare reviews I write where I regret we can't give more than 5-stars! Wilder is truly one of the greatest restaurants in all of the Portland metro. Discovered on a random Saturday morning months ago, we stumbled in for a late brunch... it was a knock-your-socks off moment. First, their Benedict is absolutley delectable! We all know I'm a sucker for a good Benedict but I'll put this one in my top-3 EVER! Absolutely wonderful! Secondly, having returned multiple times for brunch, I can confidently say, you can't choose wrong from their menu! During brunch one morning, we came to the realization that Wilder offers dinner, as well! Sure enough, we were back within the week. First thing we noticed was gluten-free fried chicken... what? Who would have thought?!?! Of course, it was on the list + their Steak Tartare. I'll just say, we couldn't have ordered better. Their chicken is literally, out of this world. Having lived in the southeast of the country twice now, I feel as though I've experienced some pretty darn good fried chicken. However, the Wilder's Fried Chicken was absolutely enchanting, every bite! The Steak Tartare was served beautifully, with a yolk on top... how much better does it get? Ambiance is cozy and romantic. Bright and intimate in the mornings for brunch, dark and moody in the evenings for dinner. It strikes the perfect mood, every visit. We would be remiss not to mention their fabulous staff. Each and every member of their team is a delight. Professional, kind, friendly, and engaging. Nothing but positive interactions, every single time. Drinks are wonderful, bar staff is obviously knowledgable. Great selection of spirits and wine. Food is to die for. Staff is top-notch! Wilder has earned nothing less than a perfect 5-star rating. Truly in our Top 3 favorite restaurants in all of Portland and permanently on our weekly list of places to visit. As it has started to become our Friday "date night" spot, it certainly makes me anxious for the weekends to get here! Go enjoy, you won't regret it! Thank me later! read more

Wow! Been sleeping on this place. Everyone that worked there was a delight and seemed to work effortlessly together. Special shout out to the kitchen staff for big multitasking energy: watching the game, closing out the place, and firing out some amazing food. Wilder's near-close happy hour offerings were both tasty and generous. Cocktails featured offerings from local distillers that yielded complex flavors but nothing that was "trying too hard" to be artisanal. Fiance and I decided to celebrate our 8 year anniversary at Wilder because we saw Steak Tartare on their menu and knew we had to come try it! We walked in at about 6:30pm on a Wednesday night and was kind of greeted by one of the servers. She wasn't too friendly and seemed to be irritated that we said we'd wait for a table as opposed to sitting at the bar. Once seated, that same server came over to try to take our orders and once again seemed irritated that we weren't ready to order. Luckily, another server took over from there and we had a pleasant anniversary meal the rest of the time! Here's everything we tried: Devilish Eggs - This came with 4 deviled eggs and was just okay. The crispy bacon pieces was the best part of this dish! Steak Tartare - This was the main reason we chose this restaurant and we were definitely not disappointed! We spent our first anniversary together in Europe and had so much tartare and this really brought back some wonderful memories for us. The tartare was rich and mustardy, beef flavor was great, and it sort of just melted in your mouth. The crispy chips paired well with the tartare and I can't wait to come back and have this again! Mussels - This was a big bowl of mussels in a white wine garlic sauce with toasted baguettes. Mussels tasted fresh and garlicky with just a bit of funk from whatever cheese they grated on top. The toasted baguettes were so good dipped into that white wine broth. I wish this dish came with skinny fries but it was also so good as is. Would definitely order this again! Field Greens - I asked for this to come out with my meal but it came out about 10 minutes before the entrees came out. It was very light and refreshing. I saved half to have with my meal but most of it was wilted already by the time our mains came out. But it's okay! The fried chicken actually had a small portion of this salad on its plate. I wouldn't have ordered this had I known, so next time will skip the side salad altogether! Fried chicken - I really wanted to like this dish but alas, fried chicken breast is very hard to make juicy. I definitely prefer dark meat because that's harder to mess up. My partner enjoyed it but he doesn't mind dry chicken. The sauces were phenomenal! That mustard sauce was great and the sweet glaze was delicious! The potatoes would have been a lot better if they were smaller to get more of that crust to creamy potato ratio but still okay the way it was. My fiance cleaned this plate up! Brown Butter Cake - This cake was phenomenal! It's hard to mess anything with Brown Butter up so I had really high expectations for this and they certainly did not disappoint. The server was nice enough to throw candles on it since we were celebrating and it really ended our meal on the sweetest note! The restaurant itself is small and cozy. A bit dark and romantic. It really reminded me of the small bistros in France that we frequented while we were out there. We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu! read more

Get the polenta cake as a gluten-free option, you will NOT be disappointed! This was a rare find (thanks Yelp!) with extremely delicious food. I selected this spot for dinner because of happy hour specials and the interesting array of food. The dining area is small and vibe is cozy as you enter. Our server greeted us promptly and kept the water filled on the table. I always appreciate when all of the wait staff pitches in to clear items, bring the meal and check on your visit. Wilder nailed it. The Devilish eggs were popping with flavor from the spicy aioli and pickled fresnos. I wish I could have the Wilder Burger with garlic dill pickles served on a crispy polenta cake every night for dinner! SO GOOD! Had a lovely date night at Wilder. The atmosphere was comfortable and charming, down to the the twinkly electric candle on our table. Wilder is in that sweet spot of neighborhood charm and upscale quality that I enjoy. We threw them a couple of challenges, and they came through with flying colors. The first was that I had seen a delicious-sounding cocktail on their online menu called a Basso Profundo, but the menu had changed and they'd removed it. I asked if they could do it, and the new bartender went through their stuff and found the recipe. It was a PERFECT cocktail (if a little small, in a coupe glass). Order it for me when you go so they have to put it back on the menu! Secondly, my wife has an allergy to fresh citrus juice. The friendly server put a lot of attention into making sure everything she got was safe, and the bartender made a unique ginger mocktail for her. So, the food: I had a new oyster stew they were trying out, and it was really good. They had it on discount (only $8) because they were testing it - who does that? And it had at least 5 chunky oysters in it. It was slightly brothy if I were to quibble, could use some beans or celery or more cream to give it more substance. I had the bistro salad as my main, and it was also good but it took me a while to get to the good stuff on the bottom (the lardons and croutons). My wife's steak was delicious, as was the bed of mashed potatoes it came on. We also got the fried broccoli - it was a generous portion and delicious with the remoulade. Super excited to try the Gluten free fried chicken and it did not disappoint, however be ready to be there for a bit. Went on a solo dinner after dropping some friends off at the Moda and really like that is was close. I did have a 25 minute wait on a Tuesday night, so if you're planning to visit please be ready for a little wait as the restaurant can hold maybe 30 customers. Again loved the chicken and the potatoes with it. I will say it is not a very crunchy fried chicken but very good and not dry. I also got the wild berry cobbler and it was okay. It needed a bit more topping. The berries tasted like they have minimal sweeter, which is fine, but they were a bit sour so the topping added the sweetness. There was just not topping on all of the dessert. The vibe is very casual and calm, ie no rush here. That leads to my only issue, the serving time. I totally get things take time, but I ordered my meal and dessert all at once. They were busy and I didn't want to take the table for too long. This being said, after getting a box for my chicken, I was told my dessert would be out soon but it took quite a bit of time. The server again said it would be out. After another few minutes, one of the servers giving me, "Do you need anything else?" Had to say my dessert. Without the wait to get in, it took me an hour to get my meal and dessert. Never having been here before and didn't read any reviews, so I can't say if this is the normal. I will again say, it is not far from Moda, and the chicken was so good. read more

For Mother's Day early dinner, my family decided to take me (& their dad, hubby of almost 50 years) to an Italian restaurant nearby, but they don't take reservation, but they recommend to come early. We did, and the patio we wanted is 1 hour wait. (We could have gone at 4, to eat at 5, if we knew!) While waiting for the rest of my children (& grandchildren), oldest son suggested, let's walk around to see if there's another restaurant to go and be seated right away. And WE DID! Not only did we eat outside, on an 82 degree very nice very little wind in the shade, but we were greeted with a friendly (smiley) kind lady server, and beautiful too! I wanted the TAMARIND drink, (that was all I can remember), it has brown sugar, honey, & lime. (My youngest son knew I don't drink alcohol, anymore, but I told him, once in a few, and today is a special day, so I will). All the ingredients on my drink was appealing UNTIL I got to the Serrano (I knew it was a brand name, I didn't know Fuego means fire. (Until down the street from us, a car was really on fire, and I showed video to my sons, and they said: FUEGO! LOL). Anyway, I didn't care for my drink, since it was spicy hot! Every adult in my table, all took sips, and finished it all, but I was left without a sweet drink, and our very nice, lovely waitress gave me same drink, without the spicey Serrano. Thank you, I'm happy now! Each ordered what they wanted, hubby and grand daughter both had the hamburger, I and one son ordered the fried chicken and another son ordered the pork chops with mashed sweet potato (I am surprise for the first time, because he, my dad and I only eat sweet potato in our family). :) All's well that ends well. We could have stayed for sweet-stuff, I heard we're heading to an ice cream parlor, and visit some more. Note: I would prefer the outside, HERE, than the patio there! We came to Oregon for the first time and decided to stop by here and the area is so charming! The service was genuinely so amazing and the energy just felt so down to earth. The food was out of this world... I've never had fried broccoli before, heck I don't even usually eat broccoli, BUT DAMN THAT WAS SOOOO GOOOD. Everything was genuinely so yummy. We all had steak that came with its own potatoes and this is the first time I've had potatoes like that that were so.. crispy in the outside??? The fact that this place does gluten free fried chicken with a DEDICATED FRYER has me hooked. I love having that knowledge that this space will be somewhere I can safely eat without worry! My wife and I attempted to dine at Wilder in Feb 27th @ 5p. We looked st the menu, had discussions, and were pretty excited to give it a try since it was doors down from our overnight accomodstions. They dont take reservations, so we walked in and waited to be seated as signage requested. Upon entry we saw two tables available in this cozy but intimate space. We were promptly told we wouldn't be seated at either because they were saving the four top for just that, a four person party. They dont take reservations so, it wasnt a specific four-person party but, rather a party they felt they could get more $$ from. They had no idea what we might order, how long we'd stay, nor whether or not a full table would have shown up. But sure, turn away a proverbial two "birds in hand," over four in the bush? So, now we had no backup plans and had to shoot from the hip on an already cold night in an unfamiliar area. Guess we'll plan elsewhere EVERY TIME we come to the Alberta neighborhood. So, can't speak to the food but the service/policy is enough to warrant the poor reporting and experience. Good luck to everyone else. -BH read more

This place is great. Food is delicious and beautifully presented. We started with a side salad and I got the Tamarind Fuego cocktail. We then got the pork with seasonal roasted veggies and the steak & potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked, but the pork was just slightly overcooked (a little dry). Our server Quinn was excellent. The other server/host, a bit less so - had a bit of an attitude, and forgot the cocktail I ordered when she dropped off our meals. No worries though. The service was a mixed bag with our hostess coming across bible, sweet, and super helpful but the bartender seemed to want to anywhere but at work moving at a snails pace if he was even working. The menu is a quick and easy read that's delicious but limited. Check it out before your group commits. Although this would be a cute date night option. The chicken was good but the steak was the bomb. The chimichurri sauce was a nice, bright addition. Good job. Bring a friend or bring a date. I've been thinking of trying Wilder for the longest time and today the stars finally aligned and I found myself here. This is a small, cozy place with a nice, well-stocked full bar, small tables along the windows, and a covered outdoor space (I love to see PDX close off streets to support small business!). They have a rich cocktail menu consisting of a long list of classics and many creative inventions of their own. I had their Old Fashioned and it was delightful. Main course was the Wilder Burger and it was, seriously, one of the best burgers I've ever had. Everything about it was top-notch and scrumptious. It came with a salad that was also top-notch and delicious (and helped remove any guilt from consuming red meat that the Old Fashioned had not already removed;) ). Places like this are why I drive 30 minutes from my Shangri-La in the burbs just to get a burger. This meal may be simple but it is on a much higher level. Wilder is now on my list of favorite spots in PDX and I'm looking forward to returning! read more

I have visited Wilder numerous times before tonight and have had an incredible experience each time. We have enjoyed the stake tartare, the burger, and have love their Old Fashioned. Tonight was an experience, beyond unacceptable for this business. I brought my husband and brother to the establishment after having so many great experiences and telling them how much they would love it. The girl at the front, one who would not provide her name, advised that they would have to push two tables together in order to accommodate a table of 5. I let her know that was completely fine and we could manage with whatever they had available. She mentioned that she would add me to their reservation and that they would send a text either way if we could be there or not. We walked across the street to have some appetizers and some drinks until we received a text. We noticed that a majority of their tables were empty at 8:48 PM and decided to give their restaurant a call to see where they were at. We didn't receive an answer or response. Since we didn't receive a text or call, my parents walked over to check in on our reservation, as they were the additional 2 members. They came back to our table at a different restaurant and let me know that they were treated horribly. I was so shocked because of the exceptional service I had received there, so I decided to walk over there myself. Before I even entered the door, a guy and the previous server were staring at me, and walking towards me, and essentially told me to leave when my only precious interaction was that we wanted a table. The guy, I assume one of the managers, and the girl were very disrespectful to me, someone who was attempting to provide them with more business. The girl told me she never said that a text would be sent whether they'd be seating us or not, and I told her that's not what I had been told. Truthfully, the situation is a he said she said scenario, but either way, the manner in which this hostess or server interacted with me was extremely inappropriate and uncalled for. The entire staff tonight (03/29/25) was extremely rude, disrespectful, and aggressive towards someone that was attempting to bring them more business and spread the word on their amazingly curated menu. I have been served by the owner quite a few times, and I assume that's where the amazing experience has stemmed from. All in all, I was simply attempting to receive clarification on their process so I could better arrange reservations in the future, but because I was told to "get out" for simply asking, I will not be returning due to the extremely poor service I received tonight. read more

This was our hang out spot when we lived in Portland. We move away in 2015, but we ALWAYS drop in when we're in town. And Ben will always recognize us when we come in. This is the definition of a great neighborhood pub. Great food, drinks, and atmosphere. Highly recommended. read more

I haven't been here in a while. I sat outside and ordered the burger with the gluten free substitute (polenta cake) not because I'm GF but because I'm bunned out and enjoy polenta. It was served medium rareeeee (mmm) with cheese, caramelised onions and aioli with pickles on the side and a nicely dressed side salad. I asked for ketchup, too. It was soooo delicious and messy. I had a cider as well. My friend ordered the burger a la carte with French fries for happy hour. The fries are good, thick and crispy and have two dipping sauces (ketchup and aioli). I know they're known for their cocktails but I was not in the mood. There was an outdoor event going on so we listened to music. Friendly service. Would definitely come back and enjoy the covered outdoor seating again. read more

I really wanted to love Wilder after seeing the crowds and looking at the menu. However, the first visit here was OK. Primarily due to the wait times in the kitchen. We came during lunch to get the + Wilder Smash Burger (Two beef patties, Tillamook sharp cheddar, pickled red onions, roasted garlic aioli, brioche bun, with a mixed greens salad) + Fried Chicken Sandwich (Fried chicken thigh, bacon, chimichurri, roasted red peppers, butter lettuce. Served on a brioche bun with a mixed greens salad) Burger and sandwich were solid but I don't think they were worth the 1+ hour wait time. If we got them within 20-30 mins it might have balanced out but the wait was just too long for us to make it worth it. My drink was tangy and got that Serrano kick. if you can't handle spicy maybe don't get it, but if you can handle spicy it is an enjoyable drink! I don't like jalapeño drinks, but the Serrano has a much better flavor. Didn't order food, but you can smell it! I asked the server to recommend a sweet, refreshing cocktail and they suggested a gin+cucumber drink that I really enjoyed. My companions got a manhattan, dirty martini, and the rosé on tap, which they said they enjoyed also. No happy hour but reasonable costs nonetheless: cocktails in the $8-11 range rather than $13-18 range. Fries and fried broccoli were generous portions, perfectly fried, with good garlic, spice, tomato sauce options. No indoor seating at the moment but an expansive street patio with picnic tables and pavement art. Signs on the table request you to mask up when a server comes over and to consider limiting your stay to 90 minutes on busy nights. Reasonable requests, in my opinion. read more

The Airbnb we were staying at had Wilder listed as a must do in the area. I will have to agree. Love the cozy atmosphere and vibe. This is a small place and there was a 30 min wait. We opted for the first available space which happened to be at the bar. The service was quick, friendly and attentive. The food was beyond A M A Z I N G.
