Another one of Akron's hidden gems. This place is fantastic!!!!!!! Located at Good Park golf course in west Akron. This course has been in my family for years. My grandfather worked there for years up until he died (they even have a memorial for him on the 4th hole) and now my uncle works there. So when Edgar's opened we couldn't have been more excited. It's brings so much to the golf course The food is 5 stars - no matter what you get! Last night, we celebrated my moms bday - for appetizers we had hog shanks (deliciously amazing, meat is so tender falls right off the bone) calamari, beef tips, and stuffed banana peppers. Although we were pretty full after those apps, we still ordered dinner and everyone cleaned their plate. From fish tacos, to lover and onions - everyone was pleased and stuffed! The staff is the best part! So personable and accommodating. The live music on the weekends is a nice touch. Finally we rolled out of there in a good coma, but we will be back, we always come back!!! Not the Edgar's I knew! First, drinks were not correct, then the waitress did not deliver my order correctly. I ordered the Smoked Baked Chicken with a side of carrots. I received fried chicken on mashed potatoes with green beans. While our guests were already eating, I said I would keep the order and eat the fried chicken. Big mistake! Breading was thick and over done. Chicken was under cooked. Halfway through my meal carrots were delivered cold and tough. Two guests had the barbecued beef tips appetizer. Full of fat and grizzle. Dinner was good. I wouldn't suggest the appetizers. Our oysters were small and lacked depth of flavor (partially our fault, it isn't oyster season and we shouldn't have ordered. Hopeful.) While the broth on the mussels was excellent the mussels were undercooked and mushy. The lamb with risotto is where it is at! Sooooo good. Get it. You won't be disappointed. My family and friends usually request Marlin as our server since he is so personable and knowledgeable with his palette. We were getting a rare night out to enjoy dinner with friends without the kids. Any parent knows that these evenings are few and far between. That being said, we wanted to try somewhere new. On the recommendation of our friend dining with us, we decided to try Edgar's. I even glanced at Yelp on our way there and was happy to see 4 out of 5 stars and what appeared to be an interesting menu. We did call on our way to check the wait and were offered a reservation for 4 people within 15 minutes of the time we called during prime dinner hour on a Saturday night. That should have been a red flag right there. I expected to walk into a ghost town restaurant, BUT upon arrival, were pleasantly surprised to see a packed bar area and restaurant. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and told we would be seated shortly. We were seated about 5-7 minutes after our arrival, and felt things were off to a great start. This is where the positives came to a screeching halt. We were sat at a table right in the middle of the dining room, which means every employee walked past us numerous times tending to other guests. We were NEVER acknowledged or greeted by a single person. No one seemed to notice us at all. We were brought a water pitcher twice by a expressionless young man who was wearing a coat and did not speak a word to us or make eye contact despite me trying to do so. After over 30 minutes of sitting there being invisible, and watching tables that came in after us literally already have food, I walked up to the bar to ask for help. I would have flagged down a server in the dining room but they literally refused to even look at our table. They were all running around in a frenzy so maybe they were short staffed? What really struck me, after watching and observing for a half hour, there was no sign of any type of manager or someone leading this team anywhere to be seen. I get being busy and I get being short staffed, that stuff happens. What I don't get is that these poor servers and bartenders looked like they were about to have a nervous breakdown. Here's the deal, I work in this industry, for a restaurant that obsesses over guest experience. So, as my husband often points out, I am probably hyper critical because I make my living making sure things like this NEVER happen. In that same vein, I'm probably much more understanding because I can see what's going on and why things are going wrong. Last night was not a night I could forgive the experience. We finally had a female server approach the table. She was apologetic but admitted she saw us sit down but didn't know we were in her section. Once again, where's the leadership? Where's the teamwork? Even if you didn't know we were your table, you couldn't stop for a minute and see if we had been greeted yet? Offer to find out who our server was? Service was underwhelming. Our waiter was rather unprofessional and under-dressed, relative to the updated decor and food prices. The complimentary sliced bread with dipping oil was delicious. The beer selection was unremarkable (all the usual domestics - no craft beers, local or otherwise). Rather than order an entree, my husband and I each ordered wedge salads, which were delicious, and lamb sliders, which were not. The pretzel bun, caramelized onions and demi-glace were nice enough, but the lamb had a very strange aftertaste that made it inedible. We informed a passing member of the wait staff (not our server) of this aftertaste. He quickly commented, "Oh yeah, I don't like the sliders for the exact same reason," and walked off with our unfinished plates. When our server finally returned to ask if we were ready for dessert (this was the first time he checked on us since bringing the food), we informed him of the off-putting aftertaste. He simply replied, "Sorry," and brought us the check. No offer to bring us a replacement item or remove the sliders from our bill. No questions about the aftertaste. This restaurant was beyond horrible..It took over an hour and a half just to get food. After the food finally arrived my meatloaf was so bad I couldn't eat it. Told the waiter he just grabbed it and disappeared..He returned with the check and a free desert. Charged full price for a meal I never ate! The perch dinner my husband ordered was edible but resembled frozen fish sticks, the brisket sandwich our guest ordered was good but the bread soggy. Four of us for dinner -- here's the story... We made a reservation for a Tuesday evening dinner with a booth in the bar. When we arrived we were seated in the dining room. Hmmm. When our salads came we found the dressings were thin and tasteless. One of our party commented "you basic stuff out of a bottle is better." Our food took forever to arrive. We wished we had timed the process --but agreed we should not have had to do so. We were told there were a lot of people off of the golf course. The grouper salad looked great. But, the fish, although hot, was soft and very "mushy." It was about the biggest piece of fish I have ever seen served. Was it really grouper? Maybe, But if it was, the restaurant probably sold it a financial loss -- likely? Regardless, it was not good. The vegetable pasta looked good, but was a bit bitter. This was the worst experience I have ever had in my life this far, and I am 65yrs young. It should be against the law for the service we received. We had a dinner party for my brother's birthday. Food was horrible. The fried chicken I ordered looked like large hush puppies. If not for me finding a chicken bone, I would have thought it was something foreign. I was supposed to get spicy greens with my dinner, but I didn't. My wine was hot not chilled. I got my salad when we were on our way out the door. My nice dinner came as we were ready to leave. And they had to put it in a to go box. I can go on, but I won't. It was so unorganized. Who serve salad at the end of the meal? (Where they do that at? Edgars) The manager was entertaining his own guess when he should have been making sure the staff was taking care of the business. Edgar's is the kind of place that you discover, and want to keep as a well kept secret, it's that special, and you don't want it to be over-run, you don't want the world to find out. But alas, my conscience says otherwise, the staff and food have earned it. This place is charming, service is always warm and cordial, and as a result it seems to attract a warm and cordial clientele. The menu is diverse enough to have something for everyone, and I am always so pleased with my meal. My first time here was delightful! We had a party of 20+ and had excellent service! Our primary waiter was Joshua and he was the best! They were all very professional! The food was fabulous! I had the Wedge of lettuce salad with the White French dressing, delicious! For my main course I had the seafood with pasta and will enjoy it again for dinner tomorrow ( actually tonight). I almost don't want to write this review, because this place is a hidden gem that I kind of want to keep hidden! It is hands down one of the best places to eat in Akron. It is located on a public golf course, which might seem a little strange, but the food and service are top-notch. If you go during the summer, make a reservation and ask to be seated outside. The view, especially at sunset, is peaceful and relaxing. Anything smoked on the menu is delicious, and the fish tacos are always a hit as well. We decided to go to Edgar's after seeing a review in an article on the 15 greatest restaurants in Akron. It did not disappoint. Prior to our experience we read most reviews available on other people's experiences at Edgar's, and went in with average expectations. However, it was anything but average...try amazing! First off our server, Tamikia, was splendid! She was polite, attentive, and extremely pleasant. I cannot write enough about how great her being our server made our experience! Second, the food was absolutely spot on. I'm talking flavor, portions, and price. I ordered the smoked prime rib and she ordered the grouper salad. Sweet mother of God...that prime rib! Anyway, my compliments to the chef and his staff that night. They did a spectacular job preparing the food. Third and finally, the environment was welcoming and made us feel very comfortable. Although the air conditioning was possibly on the fritz, it was a nice atmosphere for a night of casual Friday night dining. I almost forgot the drinks! We ordered two Irish mules (Jameson, ginger beer, and a slice of lime), and not only were they delicious, they were strong. Thank you! A stiff drink is always appreciated. I ordered the stuffed pork chop which is usually delicious and it was under cooked and the stuffing was dry. I still love the restaurant but I hope this was an isolated incident. I have been to this restaurant a couple of times now and I'm sorry to say I just don't like it. I will say up front that all of the people I've encountered there, from hostess to servers, have been very friendly and did their absolute best. It's everything else that doesn't really measure up. My first visit we tried to order an appetizer and were told it was out of season and shouldn't be on the menu any longer. For my entree I ordered one of the specials and it is hard for me to overstate how bad it was. It was a scallop dish, which to be fair I should not have ordered given this is not a seafood restaurant nor...by the sea. In any event, the scallops were terrible - gritty, rubbery, really inedible. The accompaniments were also bad - undercooked, unseasoned sweet potato hash and unseasoned greens. Just overall not good. I should have sent it back, but someone else at my table was enjoying the same meal and I felt bad causing a fuss. On our second visit (again, a group outing) I played it safe and ordered a wedge salad with a 4-oz piece of salmon. The salad was standard issue but nice, and my piece of fish was good and cooked very well. It was grilled and that added some nice flavor. My date's chicken tacos were also good, although there was very little chicken shared between the three tacos. Our problems with the second visit were less the food and more the atmosphere and service. It was unpardonably, painfully loud. There is nothing relaxing about having to shriek across the table or to the person next to you. We also had an issue with wine glasses - a couple of people at our table had to wait for some to be washed, and then in the middle of dinner one person's glass was whisked away without asking. We waited forever for our food and equally long for our checks. Due to the patio being in use there were also several flies in our faces for the duration of the meal, landing on our glasses and plates, which is just disgusting. There is just something a little off here - it is odd to me that in a restaurant that literally features white tablecloths, butter is delivered in foil-wrapped pats and salad dressing arrives in pre-filled plastic tubs. I guess this accounts for the reasonable prices, but it is a little disappointing. I do believe that everyone here is doing their absolute best, and again, everyone we encountered was exceptionally friendly. Given my hit-or-miss experience with the food and the crowded, noisy atmosphere and flies, though, I wouldn't choose to visit again, unfortunately. read more

What a fantastic surprise. It looks modest on the outside but the food was absolutely delicious at reasonable prices. The homemade bread was delivered warm to the table and the white French dressing made for a refreshing salad. Choosing an entree was hard because there were lots of good choices. The Grouper was tender, and lightly buttered and spiced just enough to bring out the natural flavor. Okay, decided to give it a try again. This time, I called ahead and made a reservation. They were open! Yea! The food was indeed good, but not great. The smoked Cuban Smoked Pork Platter appetizer was very smoky (good) and a large portion. I enjoyed the platter very much. We also shared the Sautéed Calamari appetizer. Also, very good. My wife had the special fish dish, can't remember the fish though. It was good, but not the best. Well cooked, but not that much flavor. The big disappointment was the Smoked Oxtail dinner. It certainly was smoky (good) but it was a little dry and too tough. I am VERY familiar with ox tail as my wife makes it all the time. It can be much more tender and tastier! It was good, but home cooking is better. If you order, don't complain about the fat content, it's a fatty cut. Get over it!. The desserts were not bad. Ask which ones are made in-house before ordering. I had the peanut butter pie (not the menu name). Very light and fluffy, for peanut butter. My wife had a baklava pie (also not the menu name) . Tasty if a little hard to eat because the pastry was a little too crusty to stick a fork through. Minor inconvenience though. One tip, wine by the bottle is cheaper than the glass. Vicki had the Taco Crusted Blue Catfish house-breaded with corn flour, crushed taco shells, and seasoned flour. I choose the Pan-Seared Seafood Stuffed Grouper. If I could give 3.5 stars I would. This place has a great atmosphere; very laid back bar type atmosphere in the evenings but not your average bar food. My first experience here was great. We went with a group of people in the evening for drinks and food. The service was excellent and the place was packed. Everyone's meals were excellent. The second time I went, we went for an early dinner around 5. We were almost the only people there. Service was still top notch but food came out lacking in flavor.
