The Mad Hungarian and sliders
Brian K.

Mad About Mike's: A Wild Food Adventure in Kent, Ohio This week, we pointed our compass northeast toward Akron/Kent, Ohio in search of something weird, wild, and wonderfully delicious--and landed right in front of a full-sized Star Wars X-Wing fighter jet. That can only mean one thing: Mike's Place. I'd seen the social media buzz, and finally had to see for myself what this legendary roadside gem was all about. Spoiler alert: it's part restaurant, part museum, part fever dream--and entirely awesome. From the second you pull into the parking lot, your eyes are working overtime. The outside is a playground of pop culture, and the inside is a visual overload of vintage signs, oddball décor, and photo-worthy moments in every direction. This isn't just a meal--it's an experience. Once seated, we were greeted by Stacie, our awesome and enthusiastic waitress. Sensing we were first-timers (possibly tipped off by the giddy camera use), she gave us the lowdown on the six-page menu packed with offbeat names and bold, imaginative eats. This place has fun, but make no mistake--they take their food seriously. My wife went with the slider sampler--four mini cheeseburgers topped with grilled onions and Thousand Island dressing. Simple, satisfying, and gone before I could steal a bite. I, on the other hand, went full flavor bomb with something called The Mad Hungarian--Philly steak meat, ham, provolone, and grilled onions, all kicked up a notch (as recommended) with creamy coleslaw piled inside. I cut it into thirds just to make it more manageable--and yes, I still added fries. No regrets. When I casually mentioned I was a chef, Stacie lit up and said her son is too. She surprised us with a house salad on the house so I could sample their homemade dressings. And let me tell you, these are not your basic bottles from the back shelf. The bleu cheese was bold, the garlic ranch was perfectly balanced, and the sleeper hit? A tangy-sweet white French that we both agreed was the winner. The food was rich, creative, and absolutely lived up to the hype. That Mad Hungarian? Might be one of the best hot sammies I've had in a long time. And with Stacie's tip that they're known for their Reubens, you better believe I'm already planning round two. If you're ever cruising through northeast Ohio, don't miss Mike's Place in Kent. Come hungry, come curious, and come ready for an unforgettable bite of roadside Americana. Take the trip--you'll be glad you did.

Wild environment, super fun and overwhelming lol service was okay, we were in the bus outside so a bit cold and think easy to get forgotten about out there. The menu is HUGE-look before you go haha. Prices are great, especially because the portions are generous! Food was cooked perfectly and delicious. I'd definitely come back again to try lunch!

Mike's place was fun. It's very eclectic, but can be overwhelming especially the menu there were so much on the menu! But everything that we got was good. I got the Ruben and sweet potato fries. Both were amazing. It was probably the second best Ruben I've ever had, the first one being on Wall Street at a little dive place in New York City. We came with a group of eight and they seated us in about 30 minutes. I just wish that they had a wider variety of draft beer. They had a ton of IPAs. Also, the prices on everything were really really reasonable, especially in today's economy.

We came back, and brought friends with us this time. We just had to share this place! It was their first time here and they really enjoyed it. We dined in a booth that was built into a former boat. Really cool! We reviewed the 6 page menu and decided on our meals. I got the Captain Jack fish sandwich and fries, my wife chose the Shrimp tacos and broccoli. My friend ordered an absolutely huge Reuben sandwich with a side of onion rings, and his wife opted for a Chef's salad. We all enjoyed our good, while marveling at the atmosphere of the restaurant. If you haven't been here yet, you should definitely try it out!

Fun retro atmosphere, with very friendly service and awesome food. The place for outside to inside is very eye catching and adds to the whole retro vibe of the place. The food was very good, the menu is very big though, but that's means you can't say u can't find something for you on the menu. Sabrina's Demented Friends Burger was amazing, a double patty burger, which they cooked perfectly to medium, had rich peanut butter on one bun, which was nicely toasted, balanced with sweet apple butter on the other bun, the crispy salty bacon and onion rings balanced the sweetness and tied the whole giant burger together. The fires are also very good, crispy and not too salty. For all this food the prices are very good.

Visited Mike's place recently. The outdoor decor caught my eye so I checked the yelp reviews. The reviews were good, so a visit was scheduled. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and we began to take in the decor. We found ourselves laughing out loud at some of the signs on the wall. Then we started reading the menu and we laughed some more. The rules are hillarious! The waitress made a drink suggestion for me and I tried it, but the blue cider wasn't my thing. So I just went with Mountain Dew. For dinner, my wife requested ribs, my son, chicken and biscuits, and fish and chips for me. Tasting the food made me realize that despite all of the humor in and around this restaurant, they take at least one thing seriously - the food. The food is real good. You can see and taste the attention to detail in the food. My fish and chips were very good. The tartar sauce was great. In fact, all of their homemade sauces were amazing. We really liked this restaurant and eating here is an experience you'll want to try. It may not be for everyone, but that's okay. We'll be back.

Wasnt going to leave a review buuuut they blocked me on their TikTok page after i left a comment about how they gave me food poisoning so here i am. The second that we were swatted we already lost our appetites after our menus and table were wet to the point where they were all sticking together and everything felt slimy instead of clean. We also saw pieces of trash and a rotting menu underneath our table. Nothing on the menu looked good so i just ordered a steak because who can do a steak wrong? Apparently the people with all of the anti wife stuff hanging around. They bring me this dry but also mushy steak that was both under and overcooked at the same time somehow. I asked for some steak sauce just to power through because i was hungry. My girlfriend's meal was ok (she ordered like a blt or something). That night, i had a really awful stomach ache and proceeded to have that stomach ache for the next week and had to miss a day and a half of work. So please, don't go here. It's really not as good as it used to be

Highly recommend this place for breakfast lunch and dinner. Great atmosphere fun place to have brunch on a Sunday afternoon! First time at Mike's and I would definitely make a trip back to try some of the other goodies on the menu. The menu is big enough that everyone in your party will find something to eat. I had a mimosa flight which went great with my breakfast choice. Eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and French toast. Hubby had the smothered biscuit and it was a great choice as well. Sat on the bar side and they have plenty of tvs to watch all your favorite sports. They have a boat that you can be seated in and a bus outside that you can be seated in. Very nostalgic busy place in Kent. If you out and about in Kent give this place a try you won't be disappointed.

Main entrance. They are doing some construction to explains.

This place was recommended to me by the Yelp! Community as one of the "Top 100 Breakfast Places" in…read morethe whole U.S.! I was NOT disappointed... the food was delicious, and unique. We sat at the bar counter and the service was fast, friendly, and welcoming. We went on a Monday morning, and the place was pretty busy - we didn't have to wait for a table or anything, but 85% of the tables were definitely taken. You can see the kitchen from the bar, and there is a small "take out" window where they run a Drive-Tru from. Such a great idea, and it seemed like a very smooth operation! As you enter the Blue Door Cafe, immediately to your left is a small Bakery Service counter, with a beautiful display case. It smells so good in there! The menu was very unique, but packed with lots of delicious options, and we were told that the menu changes frequently, based on seasonal availability of locally sourced ingredients. I'm not so good with words, but let me say this: Everything was incredible! Fresh, made-to-order, and delicious! I will let the pictures do the talking

Love the vibes of this place! I wish I didn't leave so full,…read moreso that I would have wanted to take home something from that display at the front. I got the biscuits and gravy, and my mom got the avocado toast. The biscuits and gravy plate is HUGE. Two amazing biscuits, tasty gravy, although it had a little too much sweetness for my preference. And I can't remember if I ordered the eggs, or if it came with it. The potatoes were fine, nothing extremely special. I'm not local, but whenever I come in town my family LOVES to bring me here. I'd like to come try the dinner menu before giving them 5 stars. But I'm definitely a fan, and will be happy to go back anytime I'm in town:) Thanks for having me! See ya next time.

Anyway: We ordered up a Carmenere and a Pinot Noir to start, tasty glasses of wine, and enjoyed the view. Dinner was the Shrimp Scampi and Linguine and a Salmon spiced just right with broccoli. Great meals. Washed those down with Sangiovese and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Polished off with a flourless chocolate cake. Pretty good, and kinda like a lighter fudge cake. Total prior to tip $107. Good meal good surroundings. This is not a weekly stop, but every couple of months it is a nice place to dine.

I was pleasantly surprised with my entire experience. FOOD: I always order perch when it's on the menu. And so, I ordered Crispy Lake Perch ($25). Perch was fried and seasoned to perfection. One of the best and most plentiful perch dishes that I've tasted. AMBIANCE: Casual restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. I enjoyed my meal on the patio on the perfect summer day. Lake views are gorgeous. You're able to walk right up to the lake and take photos. I really wish one could swim in the lake. SERVICE: Service was very attentive and pleasant. I really enjoyed that my meal was delivered to my table at lightning speed. PARKING: Gravel lot parking I look forward to returning. Next time I'm thinking of enjoying brunch and a book. The views are gorgeous, be sure to visit!
