Another great visit to Mike's Place! This is a unique eatery located in Kent, Ohio at the intersection of Routes 43 and 261. (You'll know that you are in the right spot when you see the full size Star Wars X-wing fighter near the front door!) My wife and I love the eclectic charm of this restaurant. Mike's Place is a neat spot to stop at for breakfast or lunch/dinner. There are different themes running throughout the joint. We got the Irish-themed room, and we were literally closed off from the other tables, which made the location feel intimate and private. I went with chorizo tacos for breakfast, and they were delicious. The menu is vast, with fun plate names that incorporate pop culture and jokes. Been here at least a dozen times. How have I not posted a review until now??? I'm writing this review NOT immediately after a visit, but about 3 weeks after our last one. Here's the thing, Mike's has always been a favorite of mine to take friends and family to because it's such a cool place with a ton of quirky decor and themed rooms. You can't miss the X-fighter plane right outside the entrance. They have outdoor seating during the warm months, but inside you can also sit and dine inside a bus! Aside from the experience, they have a massively EXTENSIVE menu! I mean, I'm not exaggerating! Of the many times I've been here, I haven't had the same thing twice. And I'm usually a creature of habit. There is something for literally everyone! The service is always good, the food is always great,... and best of all, their fares are always affordable. 40 min wait time but absolutely worth it. Started off with the ruban balls witch where amazing covered in Swiss and 1000 island dressing. Wings were good too got the honey mustard. We got the BBQ appetizer sampler got a big portion of pulled pork 2 big slices of brisket half slab of ribs and 2 sides. The bbq here is amazing You can totally smell and taste the smoke like a nod to the barbecue sauce as well cuz it's a separate flavor that kind of just meshes really well with it some of the best barbecue that I've ever had. Everything had such amazing flavor I've never had food like this before they really take their time. Literally compliments to the chefs. 1) Food quality and price are decent! However, the menu is overwhelming with too many choices and too small to read. Dave Ramsey would have a fit. 2) Staff needs to L*I*S*T*E*N to the needs of the customer, especially when the word handicap or disabled is spoken, instead of trying to place them where they want to seat them. And then the customer should never be expected to go back and get the menus and silverware. That's poor training and a lack of empathy. 3) The waitress should not argue or defend what she thought she heard when ordering, especially when the others at the table heard the correct order. That's also poor training and a lack of class. 4) Either 2 orders of the eggs were cooked wrong or they were swapped in the kitchen by mistake. Mike's place was fun. It's very eclectic, but can be overwhelming especially the menu there were so much on the menu! But everything that we got was good. I got the Ruben and sweet potato fries. Both were amazing. It was probably the second best Ruben I've ever had, the first one being on Wall Street at a little dive place in New York City. We came with a group of eight and they seated us in about 30 minutes. I just wish that they had a wider variety of draft beer. They had a ton of IPAs. THIS IS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN KENT! I used to make my friends and family go here on my birthday for my birthday dinner! I love every food item I have had from them. I also love each dressing- as everyone knows they have amazing ranch dressing. They used to have margarita deals on Tuesday's I believe which were great. Sabrina's Demented Friends Burger was amazing, a double patty burger, which they cooked perfectly to medium, had rich peanut butter on one bun, which was nicely toasted, balanced with sweet apple butter on the other bun, the crispy salty bacon and onion rings balanced the sweetness and tied the whole giant burger together. Visited Mike's place recently. The outdoor decor caught my eye so I checked the yelp reviews. The reviews were good, so a visit was scheduled. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and we began to take in the decor. We found ourselves laughing out loud at some of the signs on the wall. Then we started reading the menu and we laughed some more. The rules are hillarious! The waitress made a drink suggestion for me and I tried it, but the blue cider wasn't my thing. So I just went with Mountain Dew. For dinner, my wife requested ribs, my son, chicken and biscuits, and fish and chips for me. Tasting the food made me realize that despite all of the humor in and around this restaurant, they take at least one thing seriously - the food. The food is real good. You can see and taste the attention to detail in the food. My fish and chips were very good. The tartar sauce was great. In fact, all of their homemade sauces were amazing. Menu is hilarious - kids menu has a $99 liver sandwich if you dare. I had the 57 maven steak sandwich and it was awesome. Kids menu is good - daughter had the pancakes. Waited on by the staff that invented the Tif Dum Dum drink - only $6.50. Locals know but out of towners this is a cool eclectic spot with jokes everywhere - humor galore and just a fun, free environment. 5 of us ate for $85 plus tax. I just missed the lunch menu but totally went with the full portion and didn't look back. Even had to haul some leftovers home cause I didn't want it to go to waste! I even sat next to a local who was drinking his fireball shots, eating his sandwich, and sharing the history of the place. That made it even better. It really was some good conversation and thanked him for it when I left. Honestly, I do have to say the menu is just a bit much and that is the only thing I can critique. There really are tons of fun options on there! I found something that sounded good and picked it or I might still be deciding to this day. I went with Del The Mad Hungarian sandwich and fried (somewhere around $10). It was thin-sliced steak, ham, mozzarella, onions, mayo, & horseradish, served on a grilled rye bun. Wasnt going to leave a review buuuut they blocked me on their TikTok page after i left a comment about how they gave me food poisoning so here i am. The second that we were swatted we already lost our appetites after our menus and table were wet to the point where they were all sticking together and everything felt slimy instead of clean. We also saw pieces of trash and a rotting menu underneath our table. Nothing on the menu looked good so i just ordered a steak because who can do a steak wrong? Apparently the people with all of the anti wife stuff hanging around. They bring me this dry but also mushy steak that was both under and overcooked at the same time somehow. I asked for some steak sauce just to power through because i was hungry. My girlfriend's meal was ok (she ordered like a blt or something). That night, i had a really awful stomach ache and proceeded to have that stomach ache for the next week and had to miss a day and a half of work. So please, don't go here. Had a party of 12 people for my birthday yesterday at the restaurant and thoroughly disappointed with the whole experience. We were not able to make a reservation as the restaurant only allows reservations Monday-Thursday which makes zero sense. Our party was split into two tables which were not even close to each other, with an aisle in between them. Food was not good at all, everything was extremely greasy and not fresh. i'm giving this a "good" review, though that's being a bit generous. for me, the uniqueness of Mike's wore thin pretty quick. the service was fine, though nothing special. the menu is huge and if you can't find several things you want, that's your issue. i had the "Loaded Diaper" - a huge burrito filled w/ BBQ pulled pork, ground beef, onions and topped w/ chili and queso. the pulled pork was delicious and the burrito was so big i had no hope of finishing it in one sitting.
