If you would have asked me about this place two weeks ago, I would have said it was one of the best Chinese restaurants Ive eaten at. Now though i would say its OK, theres better. Don't get me wrong I'll for sure go back, for at least their great lunch menu. The service was a tad bit slow for me, but it was busy. I ordered the "Beef hurricane (HOT)" which came with two egg rolls, hot and sour soup, and fried rice. The egg rolls were small and average the fried rice as good as any, the beef hurricane was pretty good, up to the end where you could really taste how strong the sauce was, but to my surprise my fav. part of the meal was the hot and sour soup. It was terrific and next time i will get a tub to go. In the end though I would definitely recommend this place. read more

East Cafe is one my favorite Chinese restaurants! I love how sweet the staff is.. and of course the food is amazingggg. First, their hot and sour soup is one of the best I've ever had. And their bo bo platter is the best appetizer to share on the table. My favorite on the menu has to be their sesame shrimp and pan fried noodles. YUMM. Really? This is our third time trying this place but the only reason we keep going is because it is the closest Chinese Restaurant to my boyfriend's house. We ordered take out for lunch today: Egg Drop Soup, Hot and Sour Soup, Sesame Chicken and Hurricane Combo. The Egg Drop Soup had tomatoes in them, which is odd. I've ever seen that before! Due to the tomatoes, the soup wasn't thick enough and very watery. On the other hand the Hot and Sour Soup had a distinctive smell that was very unappetizing. I can't quite explain what it is but it smells sort of like old wet rug. Now, Sesame Chicken was also disappointing. It was very tough and very very sweet. It actually tasted like Honey Chicken. Lastly, the Hurricane Combo wasn't bad but again, it was sweet. It wasn't as sweet as the Sesame Chicken but sweet enough for me to give this place a 1.5 out of 5. The people were really friendly and nice so I feel bad giving such bad review but it is all about the food when it comes to restaurant reviews. read more

I used to live in Aurora a long time ago. We were there when this place opened over almost 20 years ago. We have since moved away to another state and come back into town for family events. I was in town last week and I must say, this place is STILL, hands down, the BEST Chinese food EVER. Consistent, flavorful, affordable wonderful food for over 20 years now. You can't go wrong here. I love to come eat here, its a usually thing to eat here! Ever since we found this place we don't eat Chinese food in any other place because their food is fresh and has a great taste every time, its just a usually place we always go to now. I honestly like that the price are reasonable because if you go in before 4 is lunch which they have a great deal. Sometimes it may be couple mins after 4 and they still give you the lunch deal which is great because in some place once its passed 4 they don't have the lunch deal anymore. The environment is great too because it always nice and wait you can really enjoy your food and talk with the people you're with you don't have to talk too loud, its sort of a dark place but not too dark either its just perfect which i think is great because its very relaxing too. The one thing that i really don't like is that they don't have a lot of room, enough tables because usually on the weekends its very full and you do have to wait some time. I would think that if they made it bigger it would be just perfect and they don't a lot of deserts to choose from maybe they should needed new ones to choose from something different then another places. read more

Last night we ate at the East Cafe. We were a party of six, including a 5 year old and a 1 year old. The service was horrible! We saw 4 tables seated after us get their food, dine and pay their bill before we got our food. Our girls were well behaved but after 2 hours they were close to losing it. I have eaten here many times and enjoyed the food and service, but last night was awful. One waiter and 3 at the front desk. The food was amazing and authentic!! We ordered a small Egg Drop Soup which was enough to feed four. Then we ordered the 4wonton and 2 egg roll appetizer. This place for lunch is amazing!!! Hadn't eaten here for dinner, so this is a review for their lunch menu. You know the place is good bc they're always busy at lunch. They have the basic Chinese entrees, and their lunch serves enough for one person. Along with a meal, you get an option of white or fried rice, a soup or salad, and two pieces of appetizers (depending what they have for that day, it could be a crab wonton, an egg roll, or a chicken wing). My husband and I have been coming to this restaurant for years but unfortunately, we will not be coming in anymore due to sanitary reasons. One of the kitchen staff did not wash their hands after getting out of the bathroom and went straight into the kitchen. I have been a regular customer of East Cafe since the mid 90s; it is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Aurora. The wait staff is always friendly and prompt, as is the mangement/owners. Prices are very reasonable and they offer lunch and dinner specials. It is a small restaurant, but I find it cozy. It is always clean and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The location is somewhat dicey, but that doesn't deter me from this restaurant. read more

I came here a year ago and had just built up enough courage to write tis review. The worst customer service... Their chow mein had little to no noodles, so when we asked if we can have more noodles before we even touched the plate, our server wanted to charge us extra. Instead, we politely asked for another dish because we wanted a noodle dish, so our server grabbed our utensils started frantically stirring the plate to show us the little pieces of noodle that was there. *Used* to go here about once or twice a month, maybe every other month, but never again. Not only is their wait staff rude, (bus boy is awesome however and he's super nice), but the food is good for moderate prices. First off, my fiancé and I don't go out too much but we do try and tip when we can and if we don't it's never been about disrespect to the waitstaff, spite, or because they don't do their job well. Today when we went in, service was nothing out of the ordinary. Food was good and when we got our check, there was a 15% gratuity added. Confused we asked the waitress ("Tracy") why it was added, as it states in their menu that it is only added to parties of 5 or more, and it was just two of us. To which she said that some of the wait staff said that we never tip. Firstly that isn't true, we do tip just not every time unfortunately. She said if we had a problem with the service we can tell the manager but it isn't about the service. We told her that tips are voluntary and not required, she said "it's American culture, how do you not know?" quite rudely. "If you don't tip we won't serve you" is what she said when we told her that there is no law or regulation to where any one has to tip. Not only is what they are doing illegal, they are also being insubordinate in their job, which is to serve their guests. On top of it, it's not my job to pay someone else's wages if they aren't getting paid a livable wage in the first place. You can't expect everyone to tip and not everyone will do so, and you have to take it with a grain of salt because it's the job you chose unfortunately. Hopefully they get a visit from the BBB because demanding tips and making their patrons pay extra without consent or tip a certain percentage automatically is illegal. It's a free country and it's not "American culture", if I was going to tip you in the first place, you screwed yourself out of one. Never going back to this establishment. read more

This place has CHANGED iv been a long tome customer since i was 6 years old mind you im 25 now. They are overpriced now lol dont bother getting the bo bo platter they will charge you twice for 1 item...when its already made for 2 people. This restaurant is just down the street from where I work so it is often our go to spot. I absolutely love Chinese food. This place has by far the best crab cheese wontons I have had anywhere. Their wonton soup is also unlike any other. It has beef ,chicken , wontons and shrimp! The portions are always very fitting to the price. The only thing that keeps me from giving them a five star is it seems over the past year the food seems to be more oily. The noodles are drenched with it! Also, stay away from the fortune cookies. I have been told if they aren't eaten they are put back into the bin. They are not wrapped. Better safe than sorry! Overall this is a great place for lunch or dinner. So was my first time going to this place. I picked it because a lot of people had said it was good. So I order one of there beef Mongolian dish with fried rice and egg roll. At the time of ratting the food was good. But six hours later I have food poison from eating there. Now in the hotel having to stay another night because I can not keep anything down at all. This is the best Chinese food in the metro area and, actually better than we have found anywhere else either. The lunch special is our favorite. As long as you order before 4pm, you get an entree, 2 piece appetizer, plus soup or salad, and hot tea all for under $6. I always get the salad, which has an amazing dressing on it, and my husband always gets the hot and sour soup. My favorite entree is the Genera's Chicken. Something about the sauce is just better than anyone else ever makes it. My husband's favorite is the Kung Pao Chicken or the Beef Po Ho. Our favorite server is Tracy. We have been going to East Cafe for 12 years now and she always remembers our order with zero mistakes. In fact, we hadn't come in for a while and she STILL remembered what we always get. The owners are very friendly and the place is always packed. Ask anyone in Aurora and they will tell you East Cafe is the place to go! read more

I have been here many times in the past and usually enjoy dinning here. My recent visit was very short because we noticed the menu had changed, and there is only 1 vegetarian dish. We use to eat the hurricane tofu and now nothing has tofu except that one dish, which didn't sound appealing. I'm also confused why they can offer tofu for that dish, but nothing else. So we didn't end up eating there. If you're not a vegetarian then this place is not a bad choice, but it's very inconvenient when there is no accommodations for those with healthier diet choices. read more

Not for take out. Outrageously expensive. I ordered steamed dumplings and a medium won ton soup for take out for my 4 year old. Was shocked to find out it was $16! Just had lunch with a few friends there. I ordered Mongolian beef, fried rice, egg drop soup, and an egg roll. They ordered a ginger/garlic chicken with fried rice and similar sides. Mongolian beef is my go-to for comparison. This version had plenty of onions and a nice savory sauce but the saltiness was almost overwhelming - much saltier than any other place I have had Mongolian bf. The soup was OK and the egg roll should be renamed cabbage roll - nothing but cabbage. Service and prices were fair. Nothing special here. read more

Service is only so-so, they seem interested in getting you in and out, and the decor is dated, but you really can't beat the food. I highly recommend that you eat in rather than order to-go. Best Chinese food this side of the Great Wall. By far, the most authentic eatery you can find I. This part of town.

We decided to try out tonight after reading reviews, we've been usually disappointed with the local Chinese but this time it was much more positive. My daughter and I did their combined dinner for $15.75 (choice of soup or salad; 1 eggroll & 2 cheese Rangoon per person; and 1 entree per person), we were going to do it for 3 people but found out you can only choose 1 type of soup to share and my husband wanted the hot and sour soup while my child and I got egg drop. The egg drop soup was a bit different then the usual fare. It had canned tomatoes and mushrooms, I would not say I cared for that. Canned mushrooms are disgusting and the tomatoes didn't particularly add anything. Other then those it had good flavor, my toddler son really liked it. Hubby liked the hot & sour soup as well, showed me that there was shrimp in it which he thought was great. Only downside is they give a very large portion (a small bowl to eat out of and a huge bowl with ladle) which we didn't really need, especially for my husband who had a lot leftover. The cheese Rangoon's were very good and the egg rolls were ehh, kinda on the oily side and more close to spring rolls. Our entrees we got Mongolian beef, shrimp egg foo young, sweet and sour shrimp and shrimp lo mein. All the food seemed similar to any other American Chinese food you can find anywhere. The Mongolian beef was very much like any other place I've had it at but was still good, slightly spicy but not enough to deter, in all I liked it, though maybe a bit more beef versus veggies. We were given a huge plate of white rice which was too much. The entree's weren't huge but still more then enough for us to have a good amount of leftovers. Prices were pretty standard, though I think the prices for soup was very high till I saw what we got so no real complaint there. I'd recommend doing the combined dinner as that is a much better deal overall. Wait staff was friendly and pretty prompt with bringing everything out. In conclusion, we agreed we would go again. I have been going here for many many years. We used to go 1-2 times a week, bring my sisters, my daughter and her family, my brother-in-law...But over the last 2 years the service has gotten awful. Food is still pretty good but tonight i ordered $50 in take out which is a lot. She brings the bag and I specifically ask if it is all in the bag to which she answers yes. I get home give it to my son-in-law only to find there was no fried rice or steamed rice for any of the dinners. Mind you they charge extra for this rice and when I called they about called me a liar saying he would have to check with the waitress. thats OK just won't be back for a long time, if at all.
