3 cup chicken here is probably the best I've tasted in any restaurant. We returned and again, that flavour was excellent. Service is pretty good, there are 1 or 2 servers who are excellent - attentive, patient and informative. There was only one who was mostly on the phone or near the kitchen and who didn't pick up dishes or clean the tables but Di Hsiao doesn't deserve a low rating because of one person's behaviour. Ambiance is quite good, it's clean, modern, the interior design is quite beautiful. It's modern Chinese yet not kitschy. Many Chinese restaurants border on the kitschy or basic and terrible but this place makes it easy to be comfortable to have an enjoyable meal. Prices might be slightly high in comparison with other restaurants but the quality of the food is worth paying for. There are some reviews on the prices and I feel if the food is good, it's worth paying the price.

Love this place. First go in you find the place has Simple Decoration and clean. The server is very attentive and nice. There is promotion if you eat more than $100, a free full dish of smoke fish or chicken. She remind us we have $7 more to go and can hit $100. So here we ordered an appetizer and get a free smoke fish! Everything is well executed. From their signature noodle to the brand new smoke fish, it's all good. We order set for 2. It has eel with rice, pickle veggies, 3 wine chicken and dessert. By adding $10 to this set, we get ping knuckle. Dessert is like sweet egg tofu with red bean and boba. I usually do like the boba but this one is exceptionally good! The pickled veggies has sauce taste like salad. Love it. May I give 6 stars?

Tofu and beef veggie soup. Soup would be good if they served with rice or a bowl or noodle. Look the nice interior design and the place gives it n nice atmosphere. The entrance area if they b blocked it off a lil would be better cause it was a lil chilly

    Taiwanese Minced Pork Rice

Wanted some Taiwanese food and was recommended this place by a friend. Ordered: - minced pork rice - seasonal vegetables lobster roll - ham hock - lunch set: 3 cup rice & minced pork rice - crispy pig intestine - cabbage - oyster omelette - kobayaki eel sticky rice - garlic pea shoots - clear stew with beef Everything was delicious but my favorite had to be the crispy pig intestine since it was extra crispy but it wasn't tough to chew. The lobster roll and oyster omelette was also very good and flavorful and also for sure recommended. Service was pretty quick and we got seated fast. There's a to-go drink service near the entrance if you want drinks. Ambiance was pretty cute though the chairs had a low back so you should definitely not lean back. Near the restroom there's a timeline and history of the place which was an interesting read.

Loved eating at Du Hsiao Yueh! The Taiwanese dishes were so tasty. We tried Da-A Noodle, Traditional Minced Pork Rice, Golden Fried Shrimp Roll, Braised Pork Intestine, Crispy Oyster Omelette, Fried Cabbage With Sakura Shrimp, and Peeled Chili Pepper Chicken Soup. Everything was delicious, especially the Da-A Noodle and Crispy Oyster Omelette. The place was cozy, and the service was great. I really hope they open a Du Hsiao Yueh in the US so more people can enjoy this awesome food.

TLDR - Du Hsiao Yueh's cooking is delightfully delicious and non greasy. It feels like healthier food or healthier cooking. I dined at Du Hsiao Yueh last Sunday and I loved what I ate: simple ingredients, very fresh, delicately flavoured, tender, not oily/greasy. It was refreshing and delicious. We ordered Shaoxing wine chicken, steamed flatfish and minced pork rice. The wine chicken was so fresh, moist, tender and was one of the better wine marinate work I had tasted recently. At $15, the wine chicken was a deal. The flatfish was fresh, sweet and so delicately flavoured. The arrived entree looked better portioned than the menu picture. At $20, it was fairly priced. Maybe because we didn't order any fried entree, we were pleased that the meal was non greasy and well portioned enough to be satisfying. The services was sufficient, polite, efficient and effective. Paid cash to get 10% off.

This is my first-time trying authentic Taiwanese Cuisine in Toronto, excluding the Bubble Tea café Taiwanese snacks I had previously. Since the Du Hsiao Yueh Taiwanese Cuisine restaurant have been in business in Taiwan since 1895, this makes me curious to give it try. The first thing I notice is the good customer service, which is very common practice in Taiwan and they did able to bring this positive service attitude to Toronto as well. I ordered a one-person combo and I was surprise how good the food is for only $24.99, excluding the tea and dessert. Here are the highlights. The Wild Mushroom Short Rib Soup have a pure wild mushroom and short rib flavor that is very sweet / smooth. The Taiwanese Pickles is not spicy like kimchi but is super crisp and refreshing. The raw garlic that come with the Taiwanese Sausage is a perfect match, which give a very unique flavor but not too strong. My favorite of all is the Marinated Abalone, the soy sauce base marinate sauce did not cover the original taste of the Abalone and help enhanced the Abalone flavor further. I was little bit disappointed on the Daami Noodles, as it has no shrimp taste at all within the shrimp broth. Also, the texture of the Taro in the Cold Formosa Grass Jelly Bowl dessert is very awkward. I am not is it because the Taro have been previously frozen. Overall, Du Hsiao Yueh dinning experience make me feel like visiting Taipei. Highly Recommended.

This restaurant used to be Green Grotto, a bubble tea shop. They rebranded themselves to be more of a restaurant and I finally got to try it out. I ordered a couple of their bentos (3 cups chicken and popcorn chicken) and their oyster pancake on the side. For the price of $12.99 for a bento including a drink, you really can't go wrong. The bento comes with an egg, the protein and some veggies. The portion was perfect for me. It might be a little small for a guy, but with an appetizer, it should be enough. The oyster pancake was also very good with many pieces of baby oysters inside. I will go back to try other menu items!

Da a rice vermicelli was good, with a good seafood flavour. Minced pork rice was small but good. There was a pronounced garlic flavour - more than with other Taiwanese minced pork rice. Oyster omelette was not very crispy. It had a sweet, spicy sauce on top & sticky starch at the bottom. There were vegetables inside which spoiled the texture. That said there were multiple types of vegetables, so the textures were different . Wild mushroom short rib soup was quite small but excellent, with a very pronounced mushroom flavour. You can taste the goodness in the soup. Plus the pork was still tasty & not boiled into submission.

Kids like bubble tea and Taiwanese food so we decided to try Du Hsiao Yueh. We got the bubble tea which is really the Grotto and I really like their almond milk tea which I haven't been able to get anywhere else. Their portions are a bit small but that's ok since it allows you to try more dishes. We tried their 3 cup chicken which was pretty good. The salt and pepper/popcorn chicken was a bit different than what we're used to but very good! We also tried a marinated squash (pickled) in passion fruit syrup which was quite refreshing. Definitely different than what we are used to. Their taro cubes are very yummy too! If you're a noodle person, the da-a noodles or noodles with minced pork is quite good.

We ordered the combo for two and there is a good variety of dishes. I would say the food is enough for 3 people. The Danzi noodle and pork hock were my favourite from the combo. Although the portion of the noodle was small, it is great as an appetizer - I believe the noodle is made fresh. The restaurant has a dedicated area who the chef makes the noodle. The pork hock is juicy and meaty. All the pieces are the center-cuts so it's easy to eat. There isn't many Taiwanese restaurants in Toronto so I was craving for the oyster omelette and it didn't disappoint. It was one of the best oyster omelette I have ever had. The price of the 2 person combo is only $55 which is very reasonable for the amount and variety of food you get. Before you go, just make sure you make reservations as there are limited seats

Menu - there are lots of items unavailable right now :/

My dad is an outright authentic Tainanese (正港臺南人). As a result, my family would have biannual trips to Tainan since I was a kid to celebrate the lunar new years and summer vacations. Tainan is probably one of the most cultural and historic cities in all of Taiwan. The complex geo-historical background has fostered some of the most unique cuisines, incorporating recipes from indigenous Taiwanese people, Minnans, Hans, Dutches and Japaneses that still water my mouth until this day (垂延三尺). My personal favourites are the Coffin Bread, Calamari Yi Mian, Taian shrimp roll and of course, Da-A Mi from Du Hsiao Yueh (it's transliterated here as "Da-A noodle" as in Taiwanese/Minnam (tànn-á-mī). Kudo to Du Hisan Yueh Canada for the accurate transliteration to Taiwanese instead of Mandarin, "Dan-Tsu Mian".) I was absolutely delighted when I heard that they were coming to Toronto, given that Da-A Mi was, and still is, a part of my most prominent childhood memories of visiting Tainan. It's almost surreal that I can revisit the memory on my tastebuds while being 13,000 KM away. While the noodle is priced at 6.99, the Da-A Mi is literally bite-sized. The funny thing is the authentic Da-A Mi in Taiwan is ALSO bite-sized, given that it has been more of a touristy thing in Tainan in recent decades. Although the food is definitely on the pricey side, and the restaurant is still missing some key dishes like the shrimp rolls (considering the difficulties of importing ingredients to recreate authentic flavour profiles), I'm just sitting here tasting Da-A Mi, while being in a time machine & visiting the good old Tainan in my childhood. I probably won't visit here frequently by myself, but I will undoubtedly bring some friends who want to know more about authentic Taiwanese cuisines.

Lack of communication with each staff members as well as poor communication with customers. Upon arriving 3 staff gave me wrong information as to which table was available. First 2 staff pointed at the window table then the one who was cleaning it told us it was reserved. As for placing an order for food it was like looking for a staff to pay attention to take our order. The prices for the food wasn't quite worth it and the taste was ok. There is no way I would come back nor would recommend this place.

It's simply deceiving customers.

New Century will feed a large group. Their lobster, Dungeness crab, and sea bass combo for eight…read more($798) would satisfy ten or twelve. The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.

My friend and I were wandering around FMP trying to decide what to eat when we came across Fish…read moreWith You's November "Black Friday" deal, where for $49.99 you get 2 regular size sauerkraut fish soups pre-upgraded to snakehead, 1 half-and-half snack, and any 2 drinks. If you break it down, it's actually such a good deal: the snakehead upgrade is usually +$3 each and their handcrafted drinks run around $6. No extra charge for any of that with this combo, so... why not? I got the scallion pickled cabbage fish soup (mild spice) and my friend went for the Laotan boiled fish (a bit spicier). For the snack, we picked half Taiwanese sausage and half glutinous rice cake to get both savoury and dessert vibes. When the bowls came out, they looked huge, but the portion was kinda deceiving... it's a very wide, shallow bowl, so the amount of actual soup wasn't as generous as it looked. For a fish soup restaurant, I definitely expected a deeper bowl. But the fish itself was fresh with that nice bouncy texture, plus vermicelli and a solid amount of pickled veggies. They also have a self-serve rice station with both white rice and multigrain rice. The rice cookers even have little signs showing when a new batch is cooking, which I thought was cute and convenient. Overall, flavour wise, it was solid and the promo made it worth the visit. But I am not sure if I'd come back again.

New sauerkraut fish soup spot in Markham…read more A chain from asia that has finally made it's way to Markham. They are known for their sauerkraut fish soup that comes with unlimited self serve rice on the side. Servers were attentive, spacing of the seating and tables were tight. Often times people kept brushing up against my chair while getting up to go get their rounds of rice. Although not a deal breaker, was annoying while trying to enjoy your food. The portions are big enough for 2 if you get a large, but since it was our first time we wanted to try 2 different soups. Here's what we got: Chicken wings 4/5 - Came out raw the first time after we bit into it. But quickly flagged a server to let them know how this issue. They brought us a new one shortly after that was perfectly cooked, juicy and crispy on the outside. Laotan boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chili 4/5 - Their number one classic so we had to try. It's sour and spicy with the right amount of kick to it. Basa fish filets were also tasty. Came out luke warm. Princess's tomato fish 4/5 - Packed with tomato flavour. Savoury and paired well with the basa fish filet. Came with bean curd noodles as well. Came out luke warm. Easily would be a five star review if both soups that we got came out piping hot rather than lukewarm. Regardless, a great spot for a quick in and out meal.

Wait list is old school...someone writes your name and number in a notebook and you are called when your table is ready. The interior is reminiscent of the old school taverns you see in those old Chinese movies where the traveller has spent days walking or on a horse and comes upon a tavern where the interior is all wooden tables and benches. Dining style and dishes are all family style. You order a couple of dishes and then add rice. Spice level can be adjusted and even at 'less' the heat level was high. Definitely generous use of Szechwan peppercorns! Food is very flavourful and depending on preference some might find the oil level high. The clientele is mainly Mandarin speaking and if you are Asian they will immediately communicate in Mandarin with you but I did see the staff switch to English where needed. Service was patient and attentive.
