Second time at a DJ's Clam Shack first time at this location our first being in Key West. Went we saw that a DJ's was coming to St Augustine we were extremely excited because we loved our first visit to the one in Key West. We arrived for a late lunch and had no problem ordering at the counter and only a small line. We went with a Maine Lobster Roll served cold with mayo and the Conch Fritters. There is inside and outside seating. We would able to get a table inside up stairs. Just too hot to eat outside in the Florida summer. Within 10 minutes our buzzer went off to let us know our food was ready. We quickly got into the Lobster Roll. Great perfectly butter bun with lots of lobster. It was very good. I will say I wish it did have bigger pieces of lobster like the one we got in the Keys had. This had plenty of lobster meat in it but I was it was so chopped up. Still a cold lobster roll hits great on a hot summer day. The Conch Fritters were also very good and they give you 8 which is nice. They have a lot of conch in them too. The side of fries were also much better than I expected too. Well seasoned and the perfect amount of salt. The sauce that comes with the Conch Fritters really help take them to the next level. It's similar to a Honey Mustard but is much better and pairs perfectly with them. May just come and order some of that sauce if possible. Not the top Conch Fritters I have had in JAX but for us top 3 and easy top 5. I'm sure we will be back to DJ's because we really enjoy their fresh seafood. read more

Great casual seafood place in historic St. Augustine. You walk up to order and they give you a buzzer to pick up the food at the counter. You can sit outside or inside on the second floor. DJ's Clam Shack was featured on television at some point and this is their secondary location. We've been to the one in Key West and can say that the lobster roll is consistent in flavor and quality at both locations. Every time we visit St. Augustine, we have a habit of stopping here. Some times the line is long but it's worth the wait and the orders are made pretty quickly. The restaurant is a old house transformed into restaurant with a smaller dine-in seating upstairs and a large outdoor seating area in what would have been the backyard. The restaurant has live music on some days located in the outdoor seating area. While the upstairs is a little warm (doesn't seem to have AC but is expected in an older home), it is very nautically decorated. I'm not a fan of mayonnaise so we always order the "warm" lobster roll. The roll is a nice thick cut (brioche, maybe? I'm not quite sure) bun that's been buttered and lightly toasted and has a light sweetness to it. You can see the that a healthy amount of lobster stuffed into it is in big chunks. And if it isn't buttery enough for you, it comes with a side of melted butter and coleslaw. Sometimes, when I'm super hungry, we also get the clam strip basket which is quite a lot and comes with fries. I always ask for extra crispy fries because some times they come out a little limp. I'm pretty sure their sauces are made in house and the tartar sauce is pretty good. Overall, this is one of my favorite places to stop at in St. Augustine and I highly recommend giving them a try. read more

We did a scenic boat tour, and our guide hyped this place up and said we could get a discount if we mention the boat tour. He had me at lobster roll and clam chowder. Being from New England I have high standards for lobstah rolls and clam chowda. It's an order from the counter and serve yourself kind of restaurant. So if you're looking for a sit down and be served place, keep looking. I wanted to love it, but on first glance I could tell my lobster roll was previously frozen lobster. It was greasy and bland. That's what happens when it's not fresh. On a side note, the Cole slaw was delicious! The clam chowder was thick and had a good flavor. However, maybe too thick. We were greeted, and ordered right away being there wasn't a line. The young lady (if my memory serves me well, Danika) was so pleasant, and easy going about answering our questions. The entire staff has a great flow, very good working chemistry. Seating was limited downstairs, but upstairs was spacious and empty. Our order was brought up to us, you'd think this table of 2 was an army by the amount of food we ordered, but we like options, and having them was worth every penny! The food was so fresh, soooo delicious. From the lobster rolls to the onion rings, we savored it all. Run, don't walk here! Having lived in New England, we visited dozens of them. I was craving some good ol fried clams. My husband had been craving a lobster roll. Since moving South we've had little luck finding one that was even remotely acceptable. This place showed so much promise, but alas fell completely flat. The substantial amount of clams arrived beautifully breaded atop golden hot French fries with a side of slaw. I took my first bite and was puzzled. There was absolutely zero flavor. I asked my husband to give it a try thinking my taste buds were off. Nope, same response. Dipping them in the accompanying tartar sauce gave it flavor but we didn't need a clam to be just a spoon for a condiment. My husband gave his roll a five out of ten. That's a dismal number for a place that specializes in this sandwich. The bun was decently grilled but the copious amount of butter used during the cooking process just made it greasy. The roll had good chunks of lobster but all of it was claw. Most NE clam shacks use the meat from an entire 1 1/4 lb lobster. My husband's complaint was the same as mine. Little to no flavor. When one is paying almost $30 bucks for a sandwich it better deliver. The only positive about the fries were that they were piping hot and the only good thing about the slaw was that it was cold and had a crunch. Nope. Never again. read more

We loved the food here! Granted, we only tried the fish tacos and the onion rings, but we had them twice during our three day trip to St Augustine. DJ's was really great - especially for clams! It's an order at a counter and grab your food kinda place. We were there on a Friday night, wasn't crazy busy (around 7 pm) and there was live music. Sat outside and listened to the music, was really nice. The portions are HUGE. We could have easily split one clam strip basket, but it was a great value. Plus these are hands down the best clam strips I've had. Big, flavorful, salty - they didn't need any sauce just some lemon on top. The tartar sauce had mixed reviews at our table - one liked it the other thought it was too sweet. The kids corn dogs were a great value too - tons, fresh fried and battered. Didn't look like frozen and reheated either. All in all this was a great find. We overheard someone coming back to order a second lobster roll, apparently that's top tier too.
