I feel this place has really gone downhill. I've been coming for years. The front desk staff used to be amazing. Coincidentally, it seems that when they raised prices, the quality of service went down. On my latest visit, the front desk staff acted like they didn't want to be there. The employee had a friend eating lunch at the bench up front. I came in for a walk-in nail grind, and they didn't have the staff to handle it. I dropped my 5 month old Doberman off at District Dogs Shaw for a full day of daycare and boarding from 9 AM to 7 PM. By noon I was told he was too playful and not picking up on other dogs' social cues so they removed him from group play. I understand safety is important but what happened next was unacceptable. They told me he would be placed in what they called a suite big enough for a Great Dane. They said he would get one walk and one hour of solo playtime for the entire day. When I asked for a photo of this suite I received a picture of what was actually a small windowless kennel. This is not the spacious and comfortable environment they described. While reviewing the live footage I saw an impatient attendant who did not give my dog a fair chance to socialize. Instead of working with him or redirecting his energy they quickly removed him from the group. For the remaining seven hours my puppy was confined to that small space with minimal interaction. This is not what I paid for and it is not what was advertised. My dog deserved better care, better handling, and an honest description of the conditions. I will not be returning and I do not recommend District Dogs Shaw to anyone who values transparency and humane treatment for their pets. read more

I absolutely love District Dogs for daycare, boarding and walking. My dog Max goes to daycare 3x a week and is walked by the team 2x a week and I feel good giving my entire paycheck to DD because I know my pup is in good hands. As a single, professional with an in-office job, I really appreciate all of the services DD offers and their long hours. I'm also lucky to be able to walk to the Shaw location and the convenience can't be beat. The best thing I like about DD is that they are so good with their communication. Just one example of many: One morning I dropped him off and mentioned that he didn't seem like himself. Later that day, Connie made sure to check in with a call to let me know that he had a little upset stomach but that he was doing okay. Daycare -- Max has so much fun at daycare (and has finally learned to rest!) and I appreciate that the team at the Shaw location knows him so when we walk in the door he's always greeted enthusiastically. They always check and let me know if he's eaten his dinner so I don't have to wait until the report card comes later that evening to then find he didn't eat (special thanks to Paige on this one!). Sometimes Max won't eat breakfast and I'll bring that along too and he'll have a little "brunch." They can also add on services right on the spot. I've asked for a bath or an outdoor walk when dropping him off and the team always makes it work. Their daycare hours are a true full day and I know that if something comes up at work he'll still be in good hands until I get there. Walking -- We just started using DD for his 2x/week walk and so far I am extremely impressed. The walkers leave real-time, in-depth reviews so while I'm at work I know that he's getting good care. They come twice a day, again, giving me the reassurance that if something pops up unexpectedly in my schedule, I know he'll be okay. It was very easy to get set up (I think it took just a few days) and communication through the online portal is great. Boarding -- I've used both the open area and private suite upgrade for boarding and Max always has a good time and comes home absolutely exhausted. I really like that Max knows the space well from daycare so when he's boarding he's in a familiar place with not only dogs he knows but humans too. I celebrated my puppy's first birthday here at this District Dog location with Lyssa and the team and it was FANTASTIC!! They were so flexible with me in planning and preparing. When we arrived, I was fully prepared to have to quickly set up before the guests arrived but the room was PERFECT when I got there! All I had to do was layout of the food and drinks I bought for the dogs and the humans. It was also SOOO awesome having Lyssa in the room to monitor the dogs to make sure no one got too rowdy. She made sure we had some great photos, she allowed us to hook up our speakers and again...was just really helpful the entire time. My pup and I have also taken the puppy basics class, did a few days at daycare, was groomed and did some 1 off training sessions at the navy yard location and the service has continued to be top notch! My dog and nine others were killed on August 14 at a District Dogs location. So, zero stars. I blame the owner's lack of planning for emergencies, improper disaster risk mitigation strategies, and lack of communication of the risks and history of floods to customers. I could go on, but the media has done an excellent job providing comprehensive reporting on this event. Simply Google "District Dogs flood" for a good overview of this company's owner's true colors. I doubt you'll want to give them a dime, let alone trust them with your family member's life, after reading and watching the coverage. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. District Dogs has a history of being at best, negligent and at worst, cruel. An employee spoke out about the conditions and was threatened with being fired. And another employee KICKED a FIVE-MONTH old PUPPY and the puppy DIED. Oh and about 10 dogs died during the flood last year. Also, my dog went to daycare a couple years ago and when I picked him up his eye was very red/bloodshot. I still have no idea why, but that was enough to make me weary. I wouldn't trust District Dogs to take care of a worm, so I definitely wouldn't trust them with my sweet little pup. read more

I had tried this doggy daycare for my pup as it is one of the only ones I could find that worked with the hours I needed. All of the workers were nice, however I was kind of disappointed with their approach. My pup unfortunately did not pass their eval, which I was shocked by because we have been to many daycares and parks and used rovers and I have never had any negative feedback. I cannot invalidate their feelings or thoughts on why they failed my pup, but it does make me wonder what actually occurred during that time. They could not provide any specific details on the situation that happened or how they tried to go about anything to fix the situation. They gave me a pretty vague explanation of what happened. Things happen, its their right to make decisions to ensure safety and a comfortable environment. What was REALLY upsetting to me was that I was told when I dropped off my pup that if I don't hear from them within the two hours that everything is fine and he is doing well. I never recieved a call, so I was completely blind-sided when I picked him up and was told he failed. This alone was enough to make me not trust this facility, because if my pup was that much of an issue for you, why wouldn't you call me and tell me that. But then when I picked up my pup, he pulled because he was excited to see me, and I didn't hear what the woman had said, but it seemed like she mumbled something to a person she was on the phone with regarding my pup - and seemed very off-put by my dog in general. This was anything but professional, and also made me feel like they just didn't want him there in general rather than it being because he was an issue. Then the attendant told me several times that she would recommend training for my dog. MY dog is trained I can assure you of that. He is just young, energetic and still has puppy tendencies. I thought this was very rude of her to insinuate that I have not taken care of my dog in these ways, especially when she doesn't know me or my pup at all. overall this is the first daycare experience we have had with all the daycares we have gone to (we move a lot) that was negative. However, the people were nice and it might be a good fit for others. read more

We've had such a great experience at District Dogs and love the Shaw location! Maple just completed Puppy pre-K and Puppy Basics with Kore and she made so much progress from start to finish. Kore is an incredible trainer-- so patient, enthusiastic, and so knowledgeable. She really helped Maple come out of her shell and Maple grew to be totally OBSESSED with Kore, eager to learn from her and earn treats! The obedience commands Kore taught us and other puppy tips and tricks have been so useful and Kore has been an amazing support system throughout Maple's journey. Highly recommend all of her classes! We've also done a few private sessions with Avi who is also so amazing! When Maple was struggling with potty training when she first came home, Avi worked with us and helped come up with a plan to get Maple on track. We were feeling pretty overwhelmed those first few days, but Avi helped put us at ease about all the puppy stress. He's also worked with us on getting Maple comfortable with handling and grooming, and leash skills. He is so knowledgeable and such a kind person in general. He's answered countless of my questions via email and has been such an incredible support system along with Kore. Highly recommend working with Avi if you get the chance! read more

This is about the training program specifically. The training staff and coordination seems to be separate from the boarding/daycare/grooming part of this business which may be wonderful, I am just not unfamiliar. I signed up my 4 month old puppy for their puppy basics course which is a 6 week course with dates shown ahead of time. The first course you can't even bring you dog with you as they discuss rules and the overall structure of the class - this wasn't too big of a deal but it also is a little annoying as you have a young puppy at home which is already difficult to leave and find time to go somewhere on your own. Ideally the dog would be able to go to all classes. Once the classes were well underway HALF of them got rescheduled. One of which was rescheduled less than 20 minutes before class time. This is inconvenient and inconsiderate to the class attendees who were already on their way or planning around their schedule these classes. Since half of them were pushed back I could not attend the 3 remaining classes. After many ignored emails by the training staff I finally got ahold of someone and all they could offer is 1 $50 credit per their policy. I am now left paying $300 for 3 puppy classes - one of which the puppy wasn't even allowed to go to with a potential of getting 1 $50 credit. Not worth it. Save your money or go somewhere else. Really disappointed by the unprofessional and non customer focus the training staff has shown. Again - this review is for Training alone and no other services district dogs provides. read more

We have two reasons to love district dogs. First is the weekly daycare that our Cassie loves to go to. She gets so excited to see her favorite staff members and they are always great with her. Second, we got married this month and really wanted Cassie to be a part of pictures and greeting our guests. We turned to District Dogs since we would be boarding with them and asked for help. And boy did they help! They came up with a plan and gave Cassie a bath for her to be all ready to go. Jillian, their manager, personally made sure Cassie was on time and ready for her close up. She also handled her for greeting our guests and took her back to boarding when she was done. We could not have asked for more and can't thank them enough for their efforts. I almost NEVER leave Yelp reviews but I was so beyond thrilled with our grooming experience at District Dogs today. Our three year old Corgi is a tripod (missing a hind leg) and gets anxious easily. But the staff was so kind, making sure she had a fantastic experience. And I loved the little report card they sent after. The premises were spotless and very secure. My pup has always enjoyed coming here for daycare, boarding, and grooming (when done by other groomers). Everyone else at this location has always been incredible--super friendly and caring. ORIGINAL REVIEW: One star for the groomer. Will never book groomer (A_F_) again. She cut the nails too short and my pup was bleeding. I didn't realize he had been bleeding until we got home and saw a trail of blood on the floor. The groomer didn't even bother to come out to tell me when I picked him up. When we went back to let them put some clotting cream on, she didn't even come out to acknowledge. The rest of the crew all deserve 5 stars!!! I recently took Kash again -- this time only for a bath but the experience was much better. He smelled fresh and looked so white. We were going away for a very well deserved vacation unfortunately we couldn't take our Katie-Lou.. after much boarding research we decided on DISTRICT DOGS...they provide a web cam where we could see Katie at play, and a report on her behavior and photos daily! We had her groomed on the day we picked her up, she looked gorgeous! Katie is on the anxious side at the best of time, she was very content and happy when we went to pick her up! I use District Dogs for their pet sitting services. I have a cat who has separation anxiety, so going out of town can be stressful. Every time I use District Dogs, I end up forgetting about that stress because they take great care of my cat. I get notes about my cat's visit, and photos of him being played with and given attention. I also get notes on his food, water, and litter situations, which is comforting. As far as communication goes, they use a messaging system which contains all visit notes, but what I like most is you can respond to those notes and ask questions or engage with the staff member who is visiting your pet. This is great even if just to say "thank you". Lastly, District Dogs is always very reliable. The staff member who visits my apartment arrives consistently around the same time each visit which is also great for my cat who is very much on a routine. So, in all, I would 100% recommend District Dogs pet sitting to anyone who values professionalism, reliability, and good communication. Keep up the good work! read more

There is zero supervision of the dogs here, which is disappointing as that's literally what you're paying for. They put large dogs in the small dog playroom, and on two occasions my small pup has been attacked. We have to watch the live stream all day to make sure he's okay. Today we had to leave work to pick him up early because a large dog kept attacking him. The staff blamed our small dog, saying he was an easy target and that the big dog was just exhibiting normal dog behavior. Not okay. Our pup is now terrified of daycare, and District Dogs is blaming us for our dog being attacked. Appalling. On one occasion they claimed to have taken our dog outside for a walk, which we paid for, but there were no photos (there are always supposed to be photos) and he had to pee so badly when we picked him up that night. I have no doubt he didn't get the walk we paid for. Not to mention the fact that it sometimes takes them an hour+ to clean up accidents in the dog areas. I've seen, via livestream, dogs running through poop because the staff neglect to clean frequently. Their grooming services are also subpar, would not recommend those either. TLDR: This place is cheap but you get what you pay for. Take your dog elsewhere. read more

My dog plays and runs around and just all around looks like a happy dog. Very impressed with the ventilation system (engineer in me). Lobby does not smell like dog and is very clean. I am told they have a sophisticated state of the art HVAC system. Plus the dog trainer there is pretty good. I was a big fan of prong collars and loud commands. We don't even live in DC but we visit from Florida often and when we need our dogs to be cared for while we go out for the day they have the best time at their daycare! This doggy day care is like a giant dog port-a-potty. We would often check the video and notice several puddles of urine and dog feces in the play room. Calls to the front desk would go unanswered, and frequently the dogs are left totally unsupervised for long periods of time. Other times the attendant would be in the room, but on their phone, ignoring the dogs and the urine and feces on the floor. Our dog came home reeking of pee several times from the unsanitary play rooms and had to be given a bath as soon as he got home. We emailed the manager who assured us this was a one-off event, unacceptable, and not something that would ever be allowed to occur. We gave it one more try and watched on the video (see pics) while several puddles of urine and piles of feces were left in the play room with dogs running and playing in pee and poop. No supervision whatsoever. We stopped work early, went to pick him up, and asked to speak to the manager who wasn't there. For several play rooms full of dogs there were only two people working the dog area, a front desk attendant and no manager. In addition to the unsanitary conditions here, the understaffing of the facility puts pets at risk if there were to be a fight or a dog got hurt. I understand it's probably challenging to keep good staff, but this place is always packed with dogs. They should pay whatever they need to pay to keep it fully staffed, or reduce the number of dogs in the day care so that it's kept safe and sanitary. We were excited about the Northeast facility opening on RI Ave NE, but we've lost confidence in District Dogs and won't be back. read more

This place is the absolute worst. If you want to be racially profiled, yep, at a grooming salon, then go here. The owner called my home after the receptionist said she'd reconcile my account once the crowd thinned out in the lobby. 30 minutes later, the owner called, very upset accusing me of stealing and not paying for the service. The owner threatened to press charges even though my credit card, name and address were on file. I'm confident this would have been handled different if I weren't a woman of color. This entire experience was disappointing because I looked forward to finding a groomer closer to home. I plan to go back to DoozyDog which has friendly, welcoming staff, fees that don't fluctuate and great cuts. This District Dogs location cut my dog's neck open during grooming so that I had to rush him to an emergency vet and get his neck stitched up. District Dogs paid for the stitches and operations manager, Connie Plater, offered to finish the haircut with a fear-free-groomer when the stitches were removed. But when I tried to schedule with the fear-free-groomer Connie was largely unresponsive. Moreover, District Dogs declined to offer anything for the pain they caused my dog or the stress and disruption they caused me. I was a loyal customer, but they treated me and my dog terribly. read more

Shake is an incredible groomer - my puppy has been seeing her since he was 16 weeks for partial grooms and recently got his first full groom. Shake makes him feel happy and comfortable and loved, and she makes sure to make sure the owners are happy and comfortable too! My puppy always comes home looking his absolute best - Shake really knows how to keep him looking cute with the best hairstyle for his breed. Plus, he is always sooo happy to see her when we go for his grooming. Would give 6 stars if I could. read more

I unfortunately have to downgrade my review after my second experience at District Dogs. I brought my dog in for a summer cut and tried to tell the groomer what I wanted (a trim, mainly around her neck and sanitation area). She didn't really listen to me, and ended up basically shaving my dog. My dog has a double coat, which you are not supposed to shave. I'm so worried my dog's coat may be permanently damaged. You would think a groomer would clarify with the owner before doing something so drastic.... read more
