Ordered Kung Pao chicken. Didn't really resemble any other Kung Pao I've had before. Really bland clear-ish sauce. Cubes of breast meat which wasn't very flavorful. I know this place has their regulars who absolutely love it but for me, there is much better Chinese food all over this city. read more

Service: Our server kept forgetting - well, most everything. Initially, they were super polite enough about forgetting so that made it easier to tolerate at first. But the lack of attention to any detail was repeated for the 2 tables that they had and it felt like this person's strong suit was probably not in the food service industry. The server forgot to bring us our food and, when they did, they forgot what we ordered. We had to place a second order and was told it would take 5 minutes. Our server forgot to tell us that our food was ready for take out. Even tho the server was well tipped and kept staring at us and could see we were waiting for it - we were NEVER TOLD the food was ready. We politely waited 20 minutes before asking about it. During our initial dining experience we were told it would be 5 for our appetizer order and then another 5 for the entrees when in reality it was a half hour for each course. So when we were told "5 minutes," we knew that was not an accurate statement. After 20 minutes later we asked how much longer. We were told, "Oh sorry. The cashier has it." Seriously?! For how long? No one knows. So maddening. No effort made there at all! Food: The Wor Sue Gai was greasy, dry and chewy. Dark meat chicken should never be dry and chewy! It was clearly either over cooked or possibly microwaved. The yellow gravy had so much food dye it in it was the color of an unnatural orange peel The honey pecan chicken tasted like it was made with far too much sugar and cheap pancake syrup. Honey glaze is clear with an amber tint tastes like actual honey but this sauce was milky white and thick like they used powdered sugar to make the base. I could not find more than one half of one nut in the entire dish. It was so sweet that even my sugar addicted self gagged on it. I picked the pieces out of the sauce and tried to sponge off the gag-me-gross sauce in the over cooked rice. The chicken in this dish was also cooked to jerky consistency and a nightmare to chew. I just gave up after half the dish. The egg rolls had some kind of funky chemically rotten smell. Like Sauerkraut that went bad. All the sweet and sour sauce and Chinese mustard in the world could not cover this up. The potstickers were flavorful but slightly overcooked as well. Pan fried does not mean blackened and you needed a knife to cut one in half. Potstickers should be fork cutting tender. These were not. The dipping sauce was some kind of thickened prune juice rather than the traditional ginger-garlic-soy sauce. It was an unwelcome surprise to say the least. Atmosphere: The decor and environment was pleasant and clean. Temperature was comfortable and the background music from the 80s seemed appropriate considering the average age of the crowd there for lunch. Overall: This experience was an extremely disappointing. This establishment used to be my friends' favorite place to dine and we went there out of nostalgia for a much loved memory our shared past. They were woefully saddened by the food and service. One can forgive the service - anyone can have a bad day, however, when you combine it with the egregious quality of food, it makes it for, "I am never going back there again!" kind of trip. Sad face with many tears. Next time they are in town Ding Ho will NOT be on our must-do list. There are so many places that charge less for the same (not good) quality of food or the same price for excellent food. Save yourself and choose somewhere else. read more

Several weeks ago, I drove to the west side of Columbus to the nearest Popeye's restaurant to get a chicken sandwich. The drive thru at Popeye's was actually backed up onto W. Broad St. I wasn't about to wait in the line. I just so happened to be talking on the phone to my friend, Maria, and she asked if I had ever ordered from Ding Ho. I had never heard of Ding Ho, but knew that if she recommend it the food must be good since she has great taste. Wow - this place is great! Ding Ho has the best vegetable egg rolls that I've ever tasted. They are large, freshly made, and absolutely delicious! They use only great quality ingredients. I've only tried their Kung Pao Chicken and Szechuan Chicken with friend rice. Both dishes were DELICIOUS!!! Ding Ho has been in western Columbus for years. I heard of this long ago and never forgot about it. The name is the best of any restaurant. It also has better than average food. The food and service is unpretentious and that's all you want some times. I have tried the Buddha's Delight, which is the tofu options here. It's about $7 for the lunch. There's also a few items of vegetables. It's not fancy or mind blowing but this is good hearty food. They moved a few years ago to the current location. It's much nicer inside here. The menu has changed only slightly. It now has lunch and dinner portions like many other Chinese restaurants. These are quite a bargain. It provides some entertainment as well. The servers are unintentionally funny. The trailer park grannies will give you a good laugh. I would say Ding Ho isn't as bad as it looks. It has more on its menu than you would expect. My friend, Nancy was in a re-store shopping mode. As we were on our way she decided that Ding Ho was on the way there! It was an early visit on Saturday so we were in and out of there at a really good time. I hadn't been there for a while but I was able to have my favorite wor su gai and a pot of Ding Ho's special blend of hot tea! Everything was very tasty and hot. We were both very satisfied with our lunch selections! The chicken was crispy and was very tasty. The egg rolls at DH is a meal all by itself! They are fried to perfection and so yummy! Our waitress was very sweet and good. The food was horrible. 3 adults eating one being a OSU student. We ordered General Taos chicken, Szechuan chicken and one of their noodle dishes. The generals did not taste anything like any others we've ever ever had sent it back and was replaced with sweet-and-sour which was not much better. Rice was dry overcooked chicken was rubbery. The Szechuan sauce was more of a brown gravy. We asked to have it spiced up and it came back just salty, no heat. The noodle dish was edible, but not good, the shrimp were rubbery Chicken was rubbery and no flavor. Save your money. We still tipped well because none of it was the servers fault. Nice old-school Chinese, mainly Cantonese, place. The service? Super-friendly and pretty efficient. Right there whenever I needed anything. The place is nothing fancy, but nice enough. The food? Oof, I was full but it was so good I wanted more. I got the wor sue gai based on Linda E's review. It's not usually my thing, but hey, why not have the best version of it? And: wow. It was really good. The chicken was tender, crispy on the outside even under the gravy, and tasty. Came with pretty standard fried rice, and a large egg roll packed with meat and veggies. I added on two pieces of crab Rangoon, and wished I'd gotten the 4-piece. Freshly made, plenty of crab, excellent. And yes, sweetie, everything I ate was fried except the lettuce under the chicken. I really wanted to like this place. It is a Columbus institution. I did not. The hot and sour soup was not hot either in heat or taste. Not good at all. The egg rolls were delicious but again, not even warm. Usually egg rolls are so hot they take the skin off your lips, not here. I ordered Szechwan chicken because I like spicy dishes. Again no heat at all in temperature or taste, so bland! There were lots of veggies but not much chicken. The tables around us all had lovely looking bread but we never received it. Maybe it only comes with certain dishes. I think the folks that rave about Ding Ho might want to expand their horizons. I've loved this place since I was a child. It's a family tradition to gather there after concerts, dances when younger and a taste of home on holidays in Columbus. The general Tsos chicken wasn't great, I didnt say I wanted it spicy, because I like a normal general tsos. That meant I got vaguely sweet brown sauce, and chicken with a lot of gristle. I was very disappointed in my order through DoorDash. I do not like to give one star, but in this case I feel I have no choice. Especially because a number of locals have recommended this place and I feel it's only because they have always gone here. I like traditional and Americanized Chinese food, but this was poorly done. I ordered the kung pao chicken, hot and sour soup, and small appetizer sampler. I was disappointed in my entire order. The chicken and soup had a strong flavor of corn starch or some other thickener. First and last visit tonight. The hot tea was very good and the most enjoyable part of the meal. We had the PuPu platter...crab rangoons were the best part. Egg rolls were good. Ribs were just ok. The rest wasn't worth eating. Meals - General Tso Chicken was disgusting. Hands down THE worst we've ever had. Tasted like apple fritters (wish I was kidding). The garlic chicken sauce was just salty with no garlic flavor. The fried rice was not good either. Our waiter was odd. Almost forgot to take our order but wanted to take our menus. Never refilled drinks nor cleared any extra plates, platter, etc. Also, didn't check to see how our meals were...my guess is that he's tired of unhappy guests and would rather not know feedback. Two friends and I went to Ding Ho to celebrate one of the girls birthday. We asked if she could have dessert for her birthday and was told something like "maybe" there was peanut butter pie. Two of us ordered a pecan chicken because it sounded good. Neither girl ate it because it was so tough. When the waitress asked one said "I haven't started on it yet". Soon the other one pushed a mostly full plate away from her and we were sure the waitress saw it since she went by our table and ignored asking again. When we asked for the check she sat an almond cookie down for the birthday girl instead of the peanut butter pie which she didn't eat since it was so hard. The waitress did take the entrée off their bills but one asked for Wor Su Gai to go and was charged for it. The server's attitude was uncalled for and no one was nasty to her. Normally another meal is brought but it was never offered. We never plan to go back. I was there for dinner with another couple a while back for dinner and we ordered shrimp with vegetables and were completely disappointed since the shrimp were about an inch long and not tasty. Other Chinese restaurants serve very large shrimp so we were very disappointed. I live in Westerville and looked forward to going back to Ding Ho since it had been a long time since we were there. Years ago it was one of the only Chinese restaurants on the west side. When we lived on the west side and the restaurant was on Broad St. we frequently went there for dinner. I tried this place for the first time over the weekend. An old coworker friend raved about how great it was so I decided to check it out, I was not impressed at all. The appetizers we got were egg rolls and dumplings, they were just ok. The waitress said the egg rolls were their #1 seller, I thought they tasted like any other egg roll I've had anywhere else. But the big disappointment was the entree. I should have got my favorite traditional dish I get at every Chinese restaurant which is general Tso, but again, I listened to the waitress who raved about some weird chicken dish there, so I got it and regretted my decision. The best way to describe was fried chicken with a strange orange sauce on it, but not a Chinese sauce, it seriously tasted like gravy. This was the furtherest thing from Chinese cuisine in my opinion. The fried rice was very plain and bland, tasted like they dumped a bag of instant brown rice on the plate. My friend who went with me also agreed his food was just ok but not the traditional Chinese food we're used to experiencing in a Chinese restaurant. Would've given only one star on food alone but the waitress was friendly so there's where the second star comes. read more

I love Ding Ho's. I feel it has a little 'old school' Chinese Restaurant vibe, which for me conveys 'tradition', and 'longevity'. Very welcoming ambience, but I greatly prefer the "bar side" of the restaurant. The other dining side needs some upgrades imo. The staff and management are superb, being attentive without being overly present, are friendly and professional. I have tried several dishes, and always too much to eat (generous portions). Everything is prepared well, hot, most dishes have just enough visual appeal, although I usually get the simple stir-fried rice items that wouldn't have much panache. I can recommend the WON TON soup (hearty, tasty broth, thick won ton noodles--perfect winter warm-me-up) and the spare ribs (meaty, tangy). read more

We enjoyed It so much that we know we'll be back. Everyone was very nice, and the food was pretty darn good. It's only 13 minutes from our house. Yeehaw. Ding Ho is cantonese for "the best" according to the owner of this long lived west side institution. I am not sure I'd call it THE BEST but it is certainly one of the top Chinesse restaurants in town, and my fav Cantonese specialist. Lets call it a 4.5 bordering on five. A well done UFC complete with gifts ( much thanks for the classy move) introduced me to this place. Starting with apps I tried a scrumptious crab Rangoon that was overloaded with soft crabby flavor. Mike raves about the egg roles and his opinion was correct; best rolls in the city even beating Fortune now dropping to number two in the egg roll ratings. The spareribs were finely done and liquidated off the bone. I also sampled the Won Su Gai, a succulent boneless Chicken breast topped lettuce and dripping with orange gravy, a nice combo that comes in plentiful quantity. This Cantonese dish tasted much like American chicken and dumplings too me with an orangey tint. My main course was its fowl cousin, Won Su Upp, a dish similar to the above except with duck. The duck was cooked well and was not gamey at all. This dish was good, but was a level lower than Gai; the gravy just clashed a bit with the meat. Now it could be that trying the chicken first biased my buds in a way that destined total success with duck an impossibility; it may be if I had not tried Gai I would had loved Upp it a bit more. So I am not discouraging anyone out of trying the dish, I ate all of it, but I would order Gai ( the chicken) next time. The staff here is excellent and the seating spacey. They have two dining rooms: a lower level complete with all the Oriental trappings, and a upper one next to a bar that is more informal. The portions sizes are generous, enough I had to ask for a doggie bag, and I don't need doggie bags like ever. I am kind of sad I haven't been here before. I guess the west side isn't in my wheelhouse. The place as been here since the Eisenhower administration. Originally on West Broad, it has been passed down through three generations and is still popular today judging by the crowd on a Wednesday night. The owner lead a tour through their store, showcasing all the memorabilia collected through the year. It is a warehouse of Columbus food scene history. A west side gem for sure. read more

Having read some of the recent reviews of Ding Ho, Chinese restaurant, I must say that I disagree with nearly everything stated in the poor reviews , but I can't say anything about the spaghetti here in the same way I wouldn't normally order that in a Chinese restaurant, just as I wouldn't expect the pasta in a Greek restaurant to be top notch. However, many people note that the hot and sour soup, egg rolls, and War Su Gai have a distinction of being some of the best of these dishes on the menu. As for Lucy, co-owner with Stephen giving people the cold shoulder, I am surprised to hear that. Whenever my wife and I go to Ding Ho or take friends with us, Lucy, Stephen, Patti, or Nilki always provide a warm, welcoming environment to us. I would suggest that you may have been there on a bad night (although that shouldn't happen, we know that it does.) I would suggest that those people who received less than the 4 star ranking this restaurant has received, give it a second shot. You might surprise yourself. read more

Really trying to love this place. Family owned small local business. Egg rolls are fantastic! Full disclosure I grew up with the owner and I believe third generation owner? Never ate anything from there as a kid except egg rolls or cheese burgers. As I have grown older I have gotten out of my comfort zone and I have fell in in love with Japanese and chines food. I am having a little trouble with Cantonese. Doesn't mean I am not going to keep trying this place. I will find something besides egg rolls that I enjoy although the egg rolls are tough to beat! Everybody on the west side says this place is the bomb. It's not. It's dirty, dated, and not worth your while. The food is 1970s american chinese food. There's very little here that moves the meter. You can find more love, and authenticity in the kitchens of some of the asian markets nearby. The decor is 1970s chinese restaurant decor. It's not very clean, it's tacky. THe place smells stale. THe bar sucks. It's bright, and full of sad people who don't know any better. The drinks are terrible. There's no pride of ownership. I was very disappointed. read more

I'm surprised to see so many negative Yelp reviews, please don't let that dissuade you! My boyfriend and I got carry out recently, for the first time, from Ding Ho; it was so delicious!! Unfortunately I don't have any photos, only because we ate it too quickly. I got lemon chicken and steamed rice and crab Rangoon, both of which were the best Chinese I've ever had! I was so pleased by the natural, not artificial, lemon flavor of the chicken, and how crunchy and crisp it all was! The crab Rangoon had much more crab than I'm accustomed to at any other Chinese restaurant. I would definitely be happy to eat here again, I look forward to it! read more

We ordered for delivery: a pu pu platter, Chicken lo mein, and szechwan beef. The pu pu platter stated it included fried scallops. Clearly a substitution was made, because I received processed fish cakes. The ribs in the platter tasted like they had taken a bath in a vat of salt. The chicken lo mein was not included in the order when it arrived. The Szechwan Beef also seemed to have tangled with a salt shaker, to the point of being inedible. In addition the small amount of rice that accompanied our dinner was totally inadequate considering the preponderance of sauce in the beef dish. This was an expensive waste of money.
