I thought I've had the best calamari in Venice but this place takes the cake. It's to die for, must order if you like fried squid!!!! The pasta was decent, a little harder texture than I prefer but the flavor was amazing. The only part I would say could be improved is the service...it's a tad slow. We had to ask for the check twice because the waitress forgot the first time. Also, the decor is super cute!! Our hotel recommended this place and made reservations. I give Dilla high marks for what it is. A restaurant in Rome near heavy tourist spots should not be the destination for the best of the best. This place does an excellent job however. I loved in Italy for a number of years and have explored much of the country. If this restaurant is compared to the best I've had, it doesn't come close, but that's not a realistic comparison when you're touring Rome amidst masses of foreigners in the middle of August (many of the best restaurants are closed for vacation this time of year). Antipasto was great, as was the risotto, and the squid. The wine list was long and fairly priced. If you're in the area this is the place to go. Do make a reservation because it was a little struggle to get a table at this place that already seems to have a good reputation. read more

Our favorite pasta during a 10 day trip in Italy! So delicious that we went back twice. I really love that they offer half portions for some of the pastas, so you can try multiple dishes. We loved the carbonara, truffle pasta, and arrabiata (we tried these pastas at nearly every restaurant we went to during the trip, so we had a lot to compare it to!). Excellent service too! If you are looking for condescending, rude, and subpar service, look no further. The hostess/waitress (same person) began our experience by sighing as we asked for a table for two. She then sat us in a walkway where I was accidentally bumped by pedestrians for our 45 minutes in restaurant hell. She asked if we would like water, I replied with "no thank you, but we would like some wine," to which she replied "I wasn't asking you about drinks, I was asking you about water." Seemingly equal parts rude and stupid. She then only put half of our order in. The half of the food that was served was delicious, but the portions were extremely small. When we asked for the rest of our order, she simply said "oh, I didn't put it in." Lovely. When we then asked for the bill, she came back 10 minutes later and placed menus back in front of us. I said "again, no thank you, we just want the bill." She came back 5 minutes later and asked if we would want coffee or dessert. It is unfortunate that a single person can destroy an experience or review of a restaurant. This restaurant may be much more deserving of a higher rating, but this was legitimately the worst experience we have ever had, worldwide. I would not recommend this place to anyone, but rather suggest everyone stay away from this place. My only regret is that I did not get the name of that awful hostess/waitress. read more

I give the decor and atmosphere a four star. Service a two star and food 3 star. I found the staff nice and friendly there was just two many mishaps. For instance they got two of our orders wrong, we didn't send it back and just rolled with it. We ordered the creamy burrata bruschetta and got the mixed bruschetta plate. I was disappointed with this. We also had to ask for the kids drinks 3 times, they finally came after dinner was put down. When we got the bill we noticed additional items on the bill. Extra glasses of chardonnay and bread. They put it down without asking and then charged us. When I brought it up, it was almost as like they had the true bill ready and it was handed to is immediately which made it seem even more scandalous. The wine we drank was good and the food overall was good, not great. Two stars overall was my verdict. read more

What drew me into this place was the decor/ambiance, which you could observe from the street. There were about 4 tables out front when we arrived, all occupied, so we sat inside at one of the two-top tables with the booth against the wall for one of the seats. It was the first table in from the door, but was not at all inconvenient or bothersome being right next to the entrance. The exposed brick, white subway tile, classic signs with cheerful phrases and hand-written quotes on the windows encouraging you to enjoy life gave me plenty to take in and smile at while I awaited my food. Shortly after sitting down, a server dropped a small canvas bag filled with bread on our table. The top layer was comprised of small seasoned & toasted pieces, like croutons. They were so delicious, we asked for seconds! However, it was a bit disconcerting to see that we were charged 4 euro for the bread basket when we got our bill. I have a bit of an issue with charging for something that is pretty universally given for free, particularly when we didn't ask for it, nor were we asked if we wanted it, it was just placed on the table. I did happen to notice they do this for every table that comes in, so it wasn't just us. Their wine selection is pretty sizable, and they seem to feature several different wines by the glass on a daily basis, which are noted on a separate menu and written on a chalkboard on the wall. However, a house wine would have been nice for the more budget-conscious: I didn't see any glass less than 7 euro or bottle less than 25 euro or so. My husband and I each had a glass of Sauvignon, which was tasty. We shared the soup of the day for a starter, which was a white bean and tomato soup. It was DELICIOUS, and so filling! It came in a small covered pot sitting on top of a wooden board, and it was plenty for the two of us. So flavorful yet simple - I will definitely be trying to replicate this at home! The only unfortunate thing about the soup was that it didn't leave much room for our pasta. I got the spaghetti with red pepper flakes, EVOO, garlic and breadcrumbs - simple and DELICIOUS! This was probably my favorite pasta dish throughout my 2-week Italian vacation. I just wish I had more room to finish it! Clearly homemade pasta, cooked perfectly, and the seasoning was on point. My husband got the Penne Arrabbiata, which he said was also his favorite of the trip. It had just the right amount of kick; so flavorful. Again, the unfortunate thing was that we left no room for dessert. The bathroom was pretty decent, especially compared to others I've experienced throughout my travels through Italy. There was one door to enter, with two stalls inside, one labeled for women and the other for men. The soap smelled lovely, which again, has been hard to come by (unfortunately). The service was friendly and efficient. The fact that everyone spoke enough English to help me get through the meal was also very much appreciated. In short, I loved the food here (having had my favorite pasta dish from my 2-week trip throughout Italy), and the ambiance was very much to my liking. It's not the cheapest lunch you'll find in the area, but worth the money in my opinion. Our soup, bottle of water, 2 glasses of wine and 2 pasta dishes totaled 57 euro. Came here for a late lunch on Monday and enjoyed it very much. I had a glass of white wine, the caprese, and half potion of pasta with black truffles cream. All of them was great, I especially liked the pasta. The bill included a bottle water and a basket of bread, which totaled 37 euros. I'd say it was a great deal compared to NYC where I live. This was a lovely find. We were wondering around for a while trying to avoid the main streets and the rain and noticed this beautiful cosy looking restaurant. Truthfully , I was also attracted to the shorter and simpler menu. We shared beef tartare to start followed by a truffle fettucini each. Along with a jug of house wine it really was a delicious and enjoyable meal. We seemed to get lucky and had no problem getting a table however when a queue started to form we felt like we were under pressure to finish up and leave so they could have the table back. My fiance and i visited this trendy restaurant by the Spanish Steps in Rome in June of 2012. The bruchetta was very, very good . Crusty homemade bread with the most flavorful tomatoes you can imagine . I was really glad our server had recommended it Our Main entrees were both pasta , one being lasagna , and they were good , not great . We ordered some type of cake that is filled with Chantilly lace cream . It was probably the best dessert I've ever had in my life . I tried to stop eating it but literally ate every single bite . The thing my boyfriend and I loved most about Dilla was the ambience of the place . It was fun and modern but very cozy all at the same time . The food wasn't the quality we expected it to be based on the reviews. The prices wasn't considered 2 Euro level (literally 3 meatballs for 16 Euros without anything else). The spaghetti was not cooked through, so they were hard in the center. The servers weren't friendly when we went back to ask for a mask my daughter bought in Venice and left behind for 5 minutes. We went back, and they said they probably threw it in the trash, and just dismissed us. Worst off, they charged us 12 Euros for bread we didn't ask for. Came here for dinner tonight on a Sunday. Did not have a reservation but had no problem getting seated at 7:15 pm for one. I found service to be good and friendly, had no issues. Food was delicious!! For an appetizer I had the parmigiana which is aubergine (eggplant) with tomatoes and cheese. Omg the texture and flavors were phenomenal, probably the best I've had in my life (being from NYC). Also tried the classic cacio e pepe which I also liked. It's a little bit salty due to all the cheese but I prefer savory over sweet. Overall good place to try classic Roman food in a nice setting. My whole meal w wine (Sauvignon was a great compliment to the meal), water and bread (they charge for bread) was 41 euros. Very close to the Spanish Steps on a quiet end of a small street. read more

That's completely wrong to charge us something we are not aware of, they should definitely let the customer know that they will be charging you for something like that but instead they just put it on your table without asking. We had told the waiter about our order and he took forever to get our food, way too long. When we finally got it, it was the wrong order. We got two Cesar salads and a pasta. We ordered one Cesar salad and three pastas, and we were very clear about it. Plus I don't know why it took forever to get the two salads and one pasta done. The food was average! Stay away from this place. It's a cute restaurant tucked away with good food but the service was some of the worst I've experienced. Our two waiters were extremely rude, to both us and the table beside us. The Italian woman beside me was being flatly ignored for a few minutes as she was very vocally trying to get a clean plate. The attitudes of our waiters ruined the meal. They gave us 2 bowls of bread for a table of 4, without saying anything, and we found out at the end of the meal that each bowl cost €4. After their repeated impoliteness, we left no tip. The €8 for horribly stale and teeth-breaking bread was enough. We asked how big the half portions of spaghetti was because we weren't that hungry and he showed with his hands the size of an ashtray, condescendingly telling us that order was for children. Dilla: This was our first meal, lunch, upon arrival in Rome. It's a charming little restaurant, rustic in feel, with cobblestone alley tables and awnings. Huge commercial trucks, scooters and bikes whiz by constantly, squealing tires, shouts in Italian, helmeted riders coast by, all of it adds to the charm and authenticity of the experience. We ordered: 1. Panzanella salad--grilled bread tomato red onion caper fresh basil tuna conserva--and 2. Carbonara pasta with tube pasta and Romano cheese (not a fan of carbonara with tubes). On our second visit for a very late dinner (by American standards) at 10:pm: 1. Amatriciana spaghetti--tomatoes, bacon, Romano, garlic--simple and al dente, one of the best pasta dishes ever. 2. Codfish and zucchini croquettes 3. Eggplant stuffed with mozzarella and tomato sauce with cheese and pesto. 4. Rabbit cacciatore with olives and tomatoes. 5. Tiramisu. The panzanella salad was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth--so simple in ingredients and execution, but it was the freshness of the stuff that elevated it beyond the sum of it's parts. Oh. My. Goodness. That salad was pure country goodness, I had to literally stop myself from ordering it again at our second visit, and what stopped me was that I wanted to try other stuff. The carbonara pasta, though the Romans invented it, my husband said: "It tastes like velveeta cheese poured over pasta." He hated it, and refused to eat it. I was more forgiving, but then I've never met a cheese I didn't fall in love with. That said, with carbonara, I need spaghetti, not tubes. The Amatriciana, was sent directly from the Gods--it was perfection. A bowl of pure nourishment for the soul--when you put cheese and bacon and tomato and garlic and pasta in a bowl, what could possibly go wrong? The codfish cakes were the elevated form of fish sticks and possibly the best ever I had. The eggplant was beautiful, but hen again, melt cheese over a rock and I'd eat it happily :-) The rabbit was my least favorite, not that there was anything wrong with it per se, it fell a bit flat on the palate, the flavors didn't pop or sing, were not bold enough for me, and didn't come together as I'd imagined, though the quality of the meat was good and tender.If you have a sweet tooth where anything sugary will hit the spot, the tiramisu will be your thing. It was not as layered as I'd like, where the sponge cake was too blended with the mascarpone, though the flavors were there. The service was solid, tattooed servers, warm and friendly, on the ball and energetic throughout a cramped space. The interior is completely charming with a bohemian feel, lively and jumping well into the night, e.g. it was well after midnight, when we noticed yet another customer being seated ... and this is not billed as a late night restaurant, it's just a way of life of Rome. They give us our table, and we're there for the night, and we got the bill not because they had to turn it over for the night to make another buck, but only because we asked for the bill. You gotta love this about Europe: it's not about the $$--it's about living life to the fullest and milking the experience for that moment. read more

What a shame. Such a shame. My family and I were so looking forward to eating lunch at Dilla, but we couldn't get past the poor treatment and snobbish service we received and ended up leaving. We arrived at Dilla very excited. I mistakenly asked for a table for 5 people and realized my error and asked for a table for 6. You would have thought I murdered the waitresses kitten. She was so put out having to re-seat us. Mind you, there was only 1 other occupied table in the whole restaurant and those people were leaving. So we sat...and sat..... and sat... And I finally said "If we aren't addressed in 1 minute, we can leave." Well, our waitress must have heard us so she walks up and says "What would you like to eat?" Mind you, we haven't received drinks or haven't even been given water. So I ask if we can order drinks first. She just stares at her notepad. So I ask again if that's ok. She looks annoyed and says yes. So I look at the menu and say "We'd like a couple bottles of wine..." She snaps at me "That's the glass menu, not the bottle." So she stomps off to get the bottle menu. We all stare at each other baffled. I decided I had enough of being treated like dirt and we all got up and left. She didn't act surprised. She didn't ask what was wrong. She knew she was treating us poorly. I just don't know why and, honestly, I don't care anymore. It's Dilla's loss. We were 6 hungry adults who were more than ready to drop a pretty penny for an amazing meal.What a shame for Dilla. A fantastic little spot for lunch or dinner. We dined here a few times the last time we were here in Rome (accidentally) and just loved it. When we asked the hotel (this trip) for a really great spot for dinner they recommended Dilla-- we were surprised to learn it was the same place we'd dined at so often and loved so well. The lasagne (which changes daily) is incredible, as is the grilled octopus and the pasta Arabiatta. We always start with their wonderful country bread and a Caprese salad to start. They are located near, but not too near the Spanish Steps, so it's not too hard to find yet not a tourist trap, either. I recommend a reservation (for lunch OR dinner), but it's not absolutely necessary. They are VERY accommodating and happy to have you. Mmm-mmm good!. read more
