The mussels were sautéed which was not good because I don't like slimy food. I wish they had baked mussels those are good. This little gem was near the hotel I was staying at so, I decided to stop here due to it was raining. The inside was just lovely and my waiter was very friendly. I decided to have the lasagna paired with a glass of Chianti. The lasagna came out to be a nice size on a beautiful platter presentation. The Mrs and I dropped into Cotto for a late night bite after a show and thought that it was a good experience. We arrived maybe 45 mins before they closed so they quickly sat us and got our food out to us in no time. It was tough for me to decide what to eat so I just settled for their burger and fries while my wife grabbed the grilled salmon. Both dishes were delicious, but we wished that the grilled salmon would have came with a side. Oh! And we ordered a pistachio cheesecake for take away and it was pretty good as well. From the street this establishment presents itself as a quaint garden restaurant. It has a touchscreen preview menu u outside that is truly unique to this part of Rome that I found very nice. Upon entering I was greeted by a very friendly wait staff that had the best suggestions for what to eat off the menu. As for what I ordered, I decided to order the Carbonara pasta that Rome is famous for. I have had carbonara at a handful of other places in Rome and this one was by far the best. And for desert I had the tiramisu which was absolutely Devine! We had the margeretia pizza and pizza with spicy salami. Both were fresh, light and tasty. We actually went two days for a late lunch. Service was good on both days. We also had the swordfish taco twice! Very tasty. We had the risotto- I was not a fan as it tasted like rice pudding, but the kids ate it and said it was ok. Stopped in to kill some time while waiting for my room to be ready. Shakil & staff were outstanding in making an American, "wanna-be-Italian" feel comfortable and great. We went here on the recommendation of our hotel while we waited for our room to be ready. It did not disappoint. The food was soooo good, wine was excellent but the service was even better. The waiter was funny, nice, great at his job and interacted with us so much. I would honestly come back just for him! Thankfully the food was just as good. After a day of exhaustive traveling, the five Explorers of Italy wound up in Rome and came for a late lunch at Cotto. A small bistro offering outdoor and indoor seating. Service was friendly and attentive and the decor was modern and relatively fresh. Wine - the cotto red / basically a Sangiovese but not in the stratosphere, not even the biosphere.... Onto the food: Wine: the wine list was 'American Standard', kind of reminiscent of the "Let's please everybody from the other side of the pond". That being said Italian wine in Italy is still very good. Food, good, not great but good. I started with the octopus tacos. Not a lot of octopus and hard tacos - meh Next to deconstructed risotto with shrimp. Tasty and interesting- that's what makes it for me, interesting.... Onto the ensalada / lots of basil, spinach and bacon...like good, pancetta bacon. Bottom line: need to eat while recovering from jet lag? This works well! read more

Rosario was our waiter and he did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome and gave great service. The food was very good and the portions were generous. The food is delicious and I have tried many of the pizzas and all of them equally as good. I LOVED this place! The outdoor area had a great, chill vibe! A lot of couches, tables or chairs depending on the size of your group, and how much you wanted to lounge, or sit at a table and eat. It was clams, mussels, whole and peeled shrimp, squid, octopus and one baby octopus. It was bathed in a lemon marinade and was crisp and fresh. Dinner course was the Crab Linguini and a Pasta with octopus and a creamy pistachio pesto sauce. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the presentation was well executed. Ugh Cotto. How disappointing. I was looking forward to our meal since we had eaten the breakfast buffet there earlier in the morning. The difference was like day and night. Literally. While the breakfast was great and the attendant was helpful, the night time experience was not good. Not good at all. Maybe I'm expecting too much from the waiters in Rome. Maybe it's a language barrier. All my waiter asked me was "done?, good". Just brought my plates and cleared my plates. Appetizer. Brochetta with 3 topping. Black olive, mushed up mushroom and chopped up tomato. So far the worst dish I've had in Italy. Hands down. Salty tomatoes on burnt toast. Mushy grey mushrooms on burnt toast and mushy black olives on burnt toast. Come on!! Take a look at that presentation and ask yourself " what does that grey mashed up mushroom look like? It's disgusting. 0/5 2nd course Pasta. With shrimp and mushrooms. The sauce was pretty good but seriously. You're an Italian restaurant and the pasta was glommed together. Isn't this the home of pasta? Shouldn't this be second nature to your chefs. 2/5 3rd course Roasted chicken and roasted potatoes. This was pretty good. The potatoes were nicely roasted and we got an entire small chicken. Not bad but nothing Italian about this dish at all. 3/5 Cotto was nice enough to charge us €1.50 each to use their cutlery. I should have used my hands I guess. Oh and their house wine!! €19 for 1/2 litre. Lol. Terrible. Service 0/5 Keep on ripping off tourists and your page will be filled with reviews like this. We went into this restaurant without any background info from Yelp. It is in a quiet sidestreet, making it not a place to be if you wanna see the liveliness of the street and people. The place itself though has something that gives it a bit atmosphere on the outside. We actually choose it because of that and vicinity to our hotel. Prices are slightly higher, for example I found a lasagne can generally be bought for around 8 euro, but here it was 12 euro. Portions are also a bittt smaller, but we found that was fine, since we stuffed ourselves to much before. No fault to the quality of the food. My lasagne was fine and my company, that had a pasta with goat cheese, basil and black pepper, was actually even quite excited. The waiters were very nice and laid back (but still focused). They had nice conversation with customers in a non intrusive manner. We liked it for a night. I think it's actually a 3.5 star more then 4, but then again, choosing 3 stars instead would not be fair, they did a good job after all. read more

I have been here twice...so far, so this is a bit long. The first time was on a night when my husband was working late and I had to venture out on my own for dinner. From the moment I walked through the door I felt right at home. The staff at Cotto was so warm and welcoming that I felt as though we were old friends. Not only did they not try to make me feel weird for eating alone (and really, why would they since everybody knows that only super cool, confident people can eat alone in restaurants), but they also didn't hover over me the whole time. FOOD: That night I started with their Pasta e Broccoli con Alici Fritte (Pasta with Broccoli and Fried Anchovies). Now, I might be considered strange when it comes to pasta, but I usually lean toward the thinner varieties (your spaghettis, linguinis, and such). This dish came with a thicker tube (look, I never claimed to be some kind of pasta-naming aficionado), but I really enjoyed it. The only thing that would have made it better was if the broccoli had more of a crunch to it instead of being cooked soft. For my main, I tried the Faggotino di Cernia con Ripieno di Gamberi which they described in English as Grouper Fish Roll Stuffed with Shrimp, but I would have described as Grouper wrapped shrimp. Obviously, from the description, I don't even have to tell you that it was delicious. And the veggies that came with it were beyond. It was a mix of zucchini, carrots, cabbage(?), red and yellow peppers, and the best...bean sprouts. So good. FOOD [ROUND 2]: On my next visit, I went with my husband and a friend (who had also been there before). Walking through the door we were greeted in the same welcoming way. I started with the Cacio e Pepe (Pasta with goat cheese and pepper) and my husband started with the chicken salad. Both were great! Normally with Cacio e Pepe, I have to add a bit of olive oil, but theirs was just how I like it. I honestly can't remember what our friend had, but I know he loved it because he said that after each course he ate. For the mains, I had the Polpette di Ricciola con Verde al Vapore (Amberjack fishballs with steamed vegetables), my husband had a Veggie Pizza, and once again I have zero recollection of what our friend had. I thought it would be too weird to take pics of his food. So, I didn't. Well, not until dessert...but I'm getting ahead of myself. Anyway, the fishballs were good, but a little too salty for my taste. I ate almost two of four, but I'm lucky to have a husband who is like a Hoover so I never have to feel guilty about food going to waste. And it came with the same shredded veggies from my last visit so I was very happy. The husband really enjoyed his pizza, too! For dessert, our friend had the Tiramisu which he...you guessed it...loved! He offered a taste, but I think Tiramisu is gross. I know, I know...and I don't care. My husband and I shared a Lava Cake which was delicious! So, if you're looking for a modern restaurant with a friendly staff and delicious food, I'd say head on over! read more

We arrived to our hotel late and got this restaurant recommendation from the concierge. It was just around the corner from the hotel. Was this an authentically good restaurant, or did the recommendation come because there's a cozy relationship between the hotel and the restaurant? Hmm. A little skeptical, but we went. The restaurant was empty, but it was 10:30 PM. Our order: MARINATED SALMON (0/5) Horrendous appetizer. As the dish arrived at the table, we all got an unpleasant, fishy smell. We should have sent it back but we dared to try it. Not good at all - the texture was slimy, and the flavor was nowhere. Marinated in what? Not sure. We didn't eat it at all. We felt bad to leave the dish untouched, so we took pieces of the salmon and put them on our plates to make it look like we ate it. Then we used the extra bread on the table to hide it. :) CALAMARATA W/OCTOPUS (5/5) After the bomb of the salmon dish, we didn't expect much from the pasta, but the pasta was great. I loved it. I love Calamarata pasta which is the one that is shaped like a ring of calamari. Last time I had it, it was served with squid and it was so cool looking. You couldn't tell the difference between the squid and the pasta! Only criticism of this dish - hardly any octopus at all. Seriously, just a few thinly sliced pieces. SPAGHETTI AMATRICIANA (4/5) Nicely done, perfectly al dente and good balance to the sauce. The service was lacking for sure. Asked for the parmesan and crushed red pepper maybe three times? The server was nice, but he couldn't care less about our table. And the restaurant was empty. Maybe that was it - the night was over in his mind?? And that salmon appetizer that was next to unservable. Oh, and the bread served before the meal was awful. No one touched it. I think you can trust the pasta here. Our appetizer wasn't brought out until after we received our entree. The pasta was plain and not very warm. I honestly believe you could get the same pasta at an "Italian" restaurant in the States.
