We planned an evening at this restaurant as a highlight of our visit to Rome, and we could not have been more disappointed. The first courses (scallops, shrimp) were overcooked and tasteless. The main course was the fish of day, Euro 169/2 people, and we decided to go for it as a special occasion. Again, no flavour, the waiter butchered the deboning. The side vegetables were over-cooked and presented like cafeteria food. Generally, the service was unfriendly, inattentive, just about up-selling. Really nice little restaurant with outdoor seating and a wine-cellar ambiance indoors. Above average if not stunning food. Came here for a work dinner after a long day and had very nice meal seated in a corner inside where we felt like were in nice cellar space. The white wine we had drank almost like water, but yummier and two bottles disappeared easily among the six of us. I got the the tuna nachos with jalapeños, which were different and delicious. Raw tuna is always amazing and the spice from the jalapeños and the crunch from the chips just really worked and made this meal stand above most of the other good Italian meals I had while I was in Rome. I also got the octopus because I love octopus, but you don't get to have it very often except when you're in Italy. Sadly, this octopus was more than a bit over-cooked. I still enjoyed it, but it was tough. Still, I think I'd come back and just order a few different things. read more

Grilled octopus was so far the best seasoned octopus I've had from this trip (I traveled from France to Italy, 20 days). My brother got their beef filet and he finished the entire plate (he rarely finishes everything unless it's absolutely cooked to perfection). Oysters were really clean and fresh. This restaurant was a short distance from the Westin hotel and had a large outside seating area along the sidewalk. We didn't have a reservation but were able to seat us right away. The pulled pork tacos were very tasty as an appetizer. The fettuccine with tomato sauce was tasty as well as the cacio e Pepe which is a pasta with cheese sauce with pepper and salt. Service was the typical Italian slow to give you time to drink your wine. Overall a very nice spot but the tables outside are very close to each other. They charge a service charge for bread and charge for the warm bottle of tap water like most places for tourist. read more

We were on our last night in Rome before heading back to Minneapolis, MN. We found a great restaurant near the W Hotel. You will definitely need to make a reservation. They almost turned us away even after showing my reservation on my phone. I know what you are thinking. How could this be a 5-star review? The rest of the evening was amazing. The outdoor seating is amazing. It is not on a busy street and it is romantic. The wine selection was top-notch, and the food selection was great. I ordered the veal, and my wife ordered the cacio e pepe. Mine was good, but her's was mind-blowing. I will never order cacio e pepe in Minneapolis again. While it seems to be upscale the server recommended a soup - turns out it was as expensive as an entree - it was Soup!!! Woo that was a shock! Loved this restaurant - we saw it and then our hotel recommended it to us. The salted Branzino was so perfect. The fish was so moist and delicious. The waiter prepared it at the table for us and accounted for for all of the bones. We loved this dish. The cache de Pepe was stop on. Al dente and delicious. The wine recommendations were spot on. A very average restaurant with higher than average prices. This place would be above average back home maybe even great but after a week and half in Italy and a few days in Rome, this place ranks a solid average. So far this is the only place on our trip that we said we don't need to come back to. The food was was ok. Not horrible but certainly not memorable. The service was on the so so side. I wasn't impressed by the food here. I ordered the linguine with clams. The sauce was a little too thick for my liking and I didn't feel they were generous with the clams. I went with my son and cousin. My son ordered the taco's appetizer (very tasty, well crafted) and carbonara (decent but not the best he had had in Rome). I ordered the filet with potatoes which was very delicious, and a nice portion I could share. My cousin ordered the vegetarian lasagna. This dish was laughable. It was dried crackers, some zucchini, and green mayo with some scattered leaves. I've never seen anything like that and it was almost a joke. He asked if it was lasagna and they said "yes" incredulously (how could we dare to ask?). See attached photo. I ordered a mixed salad which was a compilation of sliced veggies (nice presentation) but no dressing of any kind. Sliced tomato, cucumber, fennel, carrots on top of each other. So it's really hit and miss with the food. Definitely pricier than average. Service was a bit scattered but they were generally pleasant. I only tried restaurants within walking distance from my hotel on Via Veneto and this one was the best (and the least expensive!!) I had my ideal meal: appetizer (caprese salad), pasta (linguine vongole) and 2 glasses of delicious Soave white wine. The service was very attentive - much better than expected at this price point. I found this place by sheer comfort. It was the restaurant right next to our air B and B in Rome. This restaurant was literally next door to our place. And boy, was I not expecting much only to be truly amazed by their food. I ordered their clam spaghetti. They utilize fresh ingredients. I could tell that the seafood was fresh because it lacked any bad ocean taste and smell. The spaghetti itself is truly cooked to a perfect texture. The salad is super fresh and you can see the fresh ingredients that are utilized to compose their salads and meals. They even threw in four complimentary glasses of champagne. Incredible food. We stopped in around 4pm on a Saturday to make a reservation as we were told it can get very busy, and when we came back at 630, were welcomed very warmly and shown to our table. The bread and olive oil to start was superb. I got the cacio e pepe, (my first time ever ordering it!) and it was fantastic. Silky, creamy and cheesy perfection. My family ordered lemon trofie pasta with sea bass, rigatoni alla carbonara and veal with potato and green sauce and everyone loved what they ordered. For dessert I ordered the fruit crostatina with a creamy lemon sauce and my sister got their tiramisu. Both were incredible! Our servers were kind and knowledgable and there was no issue with us being native English speakers. The inside of the restaurant is refined yet warm. I love the twinkling lights and outdoor seating outside. I wish it was warm enough to sit outside, maybe next trip! I will most certainly be back! read more

We came here for a casual dinner and had a lovely dinner. Service was attentive and unobtrusive. The day had cooled off enough to dine al fresco, thank goodness. The manager who was walking around was very friendly and was making sure that all the diners were taken care of. When he brought out a large fish for the large table next to us he indulged us when we asked him to take a picture of him and the fish for our IG and did it with a smile on his face! I wanted something light so I ordered the spaghetti a vongole, clams tasted fresh and pasta was al dente. We also ordered a salad and that was also fresh and light for dinner. I used to go to this restaurant over fifteen years ago. Was good. Basic trattoria food. The new Piccolo Mondo is very different. A much more refined and exquisite dining experience. Not just in presentation but also very flavorful. The octopus appetizer was delicious, as was the half sized plate of home made gnocchi. And the rombo (fish) was wonderfully prepared. And the ice cream with fruit was very good. My server was Vlad. I know. Not a very Italian name. But a very nice young man who was very attentive and provided good suggestions. Visited on July 16, 2023 Service was very perfunctory. Due to the heatwave I asked for a table in their "air-conditioned" interior dining area but the air-conditioning was non existent. I requested some cold water and a glass of Pinot Grigio for my wife plus a cold beer for me. The water and wine were served but not the beer. Had to ask for beer twice before it appeared. The whole pleasure of a cold beer after walking in a heatwave was dissipated as I was forced to parch my thirst with two glasses of cold water before the bear appeared. After such a delay for drinks, we were not given sufficient time to review the menu and we're rushed for our orders. My wife ordered a vegetarian fettuccine and requested basil to be added. She received a plain fettuccine with tomato sauce without any basil. The waiter suggested I try their seafood pasta which is supposed to be a speciality. This dish was at least served hot but was very disappointing as the only seafood were four mussels (no fish, no prawns, no squid, no scallops)....total misnomer. By far the best food we had in Rome staying here for four days. The Sicilian white wine we had was cheap for a nicer wine and was delicious. Had the lobster salad which was 75€ and it was really good as well as a bunch of the different pancetta appetizers. Service was very fast and our server even gave us free limoncello shots. How do you know you've found a great restaurant when you're in an area with a lot of good food? You go back twice in a 5 night stay. We were so lucky that Il Piccolo was only about two blocks from our hotel. We tried to initially reserve using Yelp SeatMe, but they didn't show any open reservations until hours later. We walked by and just asked and they had seating. I even got my al fresco seating like I wanted to check off my Europe to do list. We first went here our second night in Rome. He ordered this rings pasta dish with a red onion, bacon and pecorino sauce. I ordered their much talked about rigatoni carbonara. We shared a salad with crispy bacon, egg, mushrooms, and shaved Parmesan. Yes, it was a pork filled dinner indeed! He bought an international data plan, so we were able to redeem the Yelp check in deal for a free glass of Prosecco for the two of us. I felt like asking my husband, "Babe, not complaining, but you think there's enough salad in our bacon?" Il Piccolo was totally generous with the bacon! They were like full on strips of bacon, not no shreds or bacon bit garbage! The bacon was SO crispy. The dressing was our olive oil and balsamic vinegar on our table. Loved the simplicity but mix of the glorious salty bacon, the lettuce, the egg bits and the shavings of light Parmesan. Next up were the pasta dishes. I liked how they used rigatoni for the carbonara instead of long pasta noodles. The sauce was so yellow, so you know they used a lot of the egg yolk. It was rich, but so good. Because I have a sensitive stomach, I had to give my husband my carbonara after a handful of bites, just because I feared a major stomachache had I not. We both enjoyed the carbonara but our absolute fave was his rings pasta. The subtle sweetness of the red onion cream sauce with the salty bacon and cheese was amazing! And yes, both pastas were cooked pefectly al dente which I don't think honestly any restaurants in the US has got as perfect as the Italians do! I asked for a doggie bag for the rest of the rings pasta but wanted some dessert to so we got their version of tiramisu. It was served in a parfait cup instead of the usual cake form we are used to. It was nice and light and a little different as I didn't notice any liquor taste. All this and a beer for him for 70 Euro (with bread and service charge) wasn't bad at all for a fabulous dinner. They also give you these yummy almond biscotti to take home for the next day upon giving you your bill. The only annoyance...those annoying people trying to sell you roses, knick knacks and such, but it's a common problem throughout the country. Come a few nights later we didn't know where to go for dinner, and honestly were a little tired of pasta. We decided on Il Piccolo again. He wanted to sit inside this time. This time he got a filet of beef and I got a chicken salad. I know it's partially because we were tired of pasta and pizza, but dangg that salad was so good! I would have got the bacon salad again, but we were pretty porked out too. Again, it was a simple salad with sundried tomatoes, grilled chicken and smoked hard cheese (perhaps Gouda?). I'm not too big on sundried tomatoes but loved the sweetness from that combined with the smokiness and saltiness of the cheese with the moist grilled chicken. Again served with balsamic and olive oil. The balsamic added a bit of tartness, but perhaps the addition of some apple would have been a nice twist as well. We realized in Europe that medium rare is typically served a little more on the rare side. No worries, though as he scarfed up his filet. Better juicy and a little undercooked than overcooked. The buttery dollop of mashed potato and greens were a perfect accompaniment to his beef. We got the same waitress and bus boy this time around too and they totally remembered us. So sweet and brought us some complimentary Prosecco. The interior of the restaurant is nice with what looks to be a big cigar room in the back. It does get stuffy inside though, so for warm nights I suggest a table outside. We highly recommend Il Piccolo Mondo and are so happy that we found them on Yelp and that we were staying around the corner at the Sofitel. read more
