I hired Devon Movers to move my elderly mother. She was very anxious about this move. The crew (Henry, Jerry and David) went above and beyond to make her feel comfortable. They were cautious, courteous, and very fast! They even personally helped my mother walk across an uneven snow covered area to make sure she didn't slip. To make things even more attractive, their prices are pretty low compared to other local movers and they offer a 3% discount if you pay cash (believe me it adds up!). I chose Devon Movers thinking I was getting a great price. Long story short, the movers were 1 hour late to move me out of a 1 bedroom apartment (with a freight elevator) into a 4 story walk-up. It took them over 6 hours to move my things - A lot of which I had already brought over to the new apartment by myself. The final total the company asked to charge me was well over the cost that I had originally understood it to be. Since I was caught off-guard with a nearly $300 increase, the movers immediately put me on the phone with their boss who proceeded to yell at me for 30 minutes, insulted me countless times and was all in all extremely rude. I was told that this happens all the time - if that is the case, then you would think a change in policy would be made so that customers are better informed of what they will be charged. After trying to negotiate with the manager, he did take a small portion off the cost - which will not cover the amount I have to pay to replace a cracked TV stand and shattered lamp. I am not mad about how long the move took or the damage because the guys who moved my stuff were really nice & felt bad about the situation- I am angry because the manager was/is rude and resorted to yelling and insulting me in order to get my money. Devon Movers moved my two bedroom condo from Chicago to Wisconsin. They were very easy to work with and gave me an honest, no-strings-attached price (the lowest in town!). They even gave me good packing advice and didn't try to sell me over-priced boxes and materials, which I appreciated. The movers were very friendly, courteous and hard working -- really good guys. I have pretty fragile furniture and, when I communicated that, they wrapped everything up and took special care of it all -- I felt comfortable and trusted their work. This was my first time hiring someone to help me move, and it went well, especially considering I did it over memorial day weekend. For three hours of help (including dismantling/reassembling furniture, one truck, a few supplies, and three movers, it was $416 plus my tip - not bad. The movers arrived within their arrival window (it started at 1, and they got there around 1:50). My movers were Phil, Ken, and Kevin, and they were just the best. They were really nice, really helpful, and did a great job of dismantling and reassembling my IKEA bed. I actually meant to write this review right after the day I moved and got so caught up in unpacking. they were genuinely amazing, especially since I was so worried about moving. The only reason this isn't a five star review (because my movers deserved it) was that whoever I spoke to on the phone before moving day was a condescending, horrible asswipe. when I scheduled the moving date, the person I talked to was fine. a few days before moving day, a different person calls me to confirm a few details; at this point, I mention I made a reservation for my building's elevator during the arrival window. they suddenly seem worried about something and tell me they'll call back. a third person calls back (or maybe it was the same as the first call, I don't really know), and proceeds to berate me loudly for failing to make a two-hour elevator reservation. I explained that my building wouldn't allow me to book that much time at once, which they said was ridiculous, because "everyone" in Chicago operates that way. they then told me that I needed to call my building immediately and get a longer reservation - after all, they said, what was I going to do if my movers didn't arrive within the first hour of the arrival window - and hung up without saying goodbye. they treated me like I was their employee and I'd screwed up, instead of as their customer. my building extended my reservation a little longer, so I called the man back and told him. I'd gotten what he wanted, but he still treated me like shit. in short- whoever does their phone service is an asshole, but their in-person movers are great. read more

Henry and two other men, whose names I don't remember, moved my hair salon to a new location on a Saturday. I had some insanely huge pieces that were extremely difficult to remove and haul away, but they did it with extraordinary patience, skill, and determination. They worked until at least midnight, so that was a 16 hour day for them, but they got it done. I tend to be overly optimistic, so I assumed it would take two or three hours. It ended up taking seven, but they never stopped working and, even more impressive, handled every item with great care. Nothing was damaged! Thank you Henry and men for doing such an awesome job. The movers did an incredible job, I would definitely go with Devon Moving again. As many other people said Tony is the best! They were prepared with bins to help move my miscellaneous stuff and called before coming to let me know they were on their way (and were early!). The pricing was less than I had found calling around to some other places. The whole thing came to 210 for 2 the movers and any other fees. There was a 3 hour minimum, though it only took them 2.5 hours to do the whole move for a one bedroom. I have no complaints on the move. My only recommendation is to make sure you confirm with the management your date and time and remember to talk with the same manager who books your time. I joined Yelp just so that I could tell everyone how great of an experience I had using Devon Moving company! I was hesitant at first to hire a random moving company, but I am confident I made a good choice! Between the quality of work and the price for the move, you can not go wrong here. read more

We decided at the last minute to be grownups and hire movers. BEST.DECISION.EVER. I'll admit that booking was a little tricky -- they kept changing the time on us because the truck had broken down the day before, etc. etc. Plus, we waited til the last minute to book AND we were moving from two apartments (one south, one northwest) to a third apartment (in Rogers Park) But finally we settled on 9 a.m. with Frank's crew of three guys. I recently moved over Memorial Day weekend which is an extremely busy weekend in Chicago to be moving. I have used plenty of different moving companies in the past but have never really been that happy with the service or the price that other companies charge. A friend from work recommended Devon Moving Company to me and said she had used them twice in the past and that they are very reasonably priced and very professional so I decided to give them a try. I am so happy that I did because the move could not have gone anymore smoothly!!! I absolutely recommend asking for Tony and his crew (3 man crew). I was scheduled to move at 1pm on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Tony called me at exactly 1pm to let me know that they were about two blocks away. When they showed up, they went over all the "hidden costs" that were not included in the quote given to me over the phone i.e. charges for tape, boxes, plastic wrap etc. that I may have needed. Fortunately I was very well prepared and didn't need to purchase any additional boxes or items from them. I would recommend to others though to have a few large rolls of packing tape at your house so that the movers can just use your tape if need be so that you are not charged for it. They used my tape around the blankets they brought to cover my couches, tv, etc and that way I didn't get charged for it. My move took exactly 3 hours and not a single thing was cracked or broken. I moved from the 2nd floor of a walk up building to the 2nd floor of another walk up building in the same neighborhood. I really appreciate how friendly, professional, and hard working Tony and his crew were. They made my moving day a breeze and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone who wants reliable movers for a very reasonable price!! read more

This company gets two stars for friendliness and price. The crew was very personable. However, after scheduling an appointment I never received a confirmation email as I was told I would. I had to call back to ensure that my reservation was made. I also did not receive a confirmation call the morning or evening before my move. Once again, I had to call to confirm. My movers were 20 minutes late. Time is always of the essence for me. Although I appreciate their commitment to providing quick service, they moved too fast. They left behind some of their packing and wrapping materials at my new home and they broke more than half of my dinner ware......which was wrapped in BOTH towels and bubble wrap! I would not recommend them nor will I use them again if needed. Nice people, just not great movers. read more

I used this company for a move from Chicago to Dallas. Two things.... 1. I have never hired movers before 2. I have never moved long distance Keeping that in mind I had ALOT of questions lol. You hear all those horror stories of items being lost, delivered late arriving damaged etc. Needless to say I was nervous about everything. I had the opportunity to work with Alex. He came by the house to give us an estimate and even came back to pick up old furniture we didn't need for a very low price. Alex was great, he answered all my questions answered all my emails and tried his best to put my concerns to rest. I even called Frank the owner to ensure that everything would be ok. Frank was very helpful and promised our items would be picked and delivered on time. Jerry and his team arrived within the time they said they would and loaded my items in about 30 min. I did not have furniture but a ton of boxes. Alex had a driver named Joey driver my items in its own truck with nothing else all the way to TX where he unloaded it. He was on time. I'm giving 5 stars because of the excellent service I received, the great price, and the patience they had with me (a moving company newbie). I would use them again if I could. read more

They changed the price of the move after we had signed a contract. He switched it from $105/hour for three guys to $80/hour for two guys. He told me this a few minutes before they were supposed to show up, so there was nothing I could do. While moving, I heard a crashing sound where one of the guys was loading the elevator, so I went over to look, and he was just throwing boxes in. I noticed several boxes were even upside down, which I found incredible. Not a good experience. read more

As good as it gets. These guys are great. I scheduled my move with Golan movers 2 month in advance. They were suppose to show up on july 28 at 8AM. Exactly at 8AM Golan movers called me said they are not coming. I called a couple moving companies and the response was the same - we can not help you. Then I called Devon movers, I explained my cituation and finally I found complete understanding. I spoke with Alex and he was amazing. Unfortunately, I had to use this company to move. We had never used a moving company before, a point I made clear to the owner when we were first spoke. I also made a point of telling him that we were both disabled and had a limited amount of money in order to pay for the move. We had to move in 2 stages and the owner and I agreed upon a fee, after he came and viewed our property. I wound up paying twice as much. Knowing that I still had the second part of the move and knowing that I had been soaked and harassed by their movers, I struck up a deal with the owner for considerably cheaper than the original price from the first half. I felt somewhat comfortable with the arrangements. The day of the 2nd move, lo and behold I was told by the crew chief that my arrangement with the owner meant nothing and that he decided the price. I told him if he couldn't honor his boss' deal to put my stuff back and go home. To that he replied, "I was only kidding". Sure. They wrapped none of our belongings, a few items were broken and unreplaceable. They damaged several items including our TV. Then a few days later we realized that a pair of $1400.00 speakers were missing. I called the owner who was a bit snooty at first until I mentioned calling the police. His attitude changed and he promised that he would try tocate our speakers, which he did 2 hours later. They were on the truck in some special compartment. Honestly, how could these speakers even fit, they're stand-up, self-powered speakers and big! Our 'Dolby 5.1 Stereo Receiver" is still missing, which we can't afford to replace. Also, our friend who's house we stayed in until the 2nd part of the move, are missing a very expensive camera, which had just been bought and was kept in the basement with our stuff. They knew that we were financially in a bad situation because of health problems and couldn't afford movers insurance, and yet they still tried to take advantage of us, were extremely careless with our things, broke or damaged several of our items, and we believe tried to steal from us and did steal from us. A word about the crew. Most of them were known gang-bangers. I would've been better of paying more money. I'm sure we would've been much happier with our moving experience. If you have limited income, either get movers insurance and watch them like hawks or don't use this company at all! In fact, just don't use them, you're better off! read more

Literally, this terrible experience prompted me to join Yelp. Like others, I was in a pinch, and when I found Devon Moving, they were extremely responsive and arranged for a move less than two weeks out. They promised that it would take only 1.5 hours to move me out of my 40th floor condo, so we arranged they could come at 11:00 a.m., knowing I would have the freight elevator only for the morning and another tenant would get exclusive use of the elevator that afternoon. My move was a disaster, top to bottom. The crew was running behind, but no one called me to say this, so I had to keep calling to ask where the movers were. Gone was the responsive company that had TRIED to get my business. I kept getting the runaround (they are 10 minutes away, they are stuck in traffic, they are stuck on Belmont), until finally, the movers arrived 50 minutes LATE. The crew that was sent was not even my original moving crew. My original moving crew was delayed in a morning move, so the company scrambled to find another crew. While I appreciate this, frankly, it seems like the company double-booked and HOPED the original moving crew would be finished in time. When they were not, I paid the price. When my crew arrived 50 minutes late, the afternoon movers had already arrived. I was stuck running between my condo management office, the afternoon movers, and the condo owner who had reserved the afternoon move to negotiate use of the elevator past my allotted time. Then, when things couldn't get worse, they did. The moving truck the team had brought was too small. Who brings a 14' truck to move a 1.5 bedroom?! So... I had to wait for the company to send a bigger truck. My movers worked as hard as they could with the hand they were dealt - they were great guys - BUT when you hire movers through a moving company, you hire the COMPANY, and this company seriously let me down. The move did finish within 1.5 hours, but there was so much headache it simply was not worth it. I literally would never hire this company again. When you move - especially in a high-rise, you are incredibly vulnerable. You've booked an elusive elevator reservation and paid related fees, and if your move does not happen exactly as it should, then you are penalized. You pay a lot of money for the peace of mind to rely on the professionalism of a moving company. This did not cut it. My move was insanely stressful. Also, my white couch is now smudged with dirt and my antique wooden buffet chipped. Just to end the insanity, I paid the full price - and tipped the workers (this was not their fault). I have since emailed the company about everything above and not received any response. Simply put, be WARY. There are many more professional companies out there. Save the headache (and avoid pulling out your hair): send your business and your money elsewhere. read more
