I booked Devon Movers two years ago and was assigned Tony's crew. They were FANTASTIC!!!!! They were professional, efficient, careful and hardworking. I called Devon last month when we moved again. I didn't think to request Tony's crew again because I assumed every crew would be just as good. I absolutely regret it. This time I was assigned a group of very young guys who appeared to have very little idea on what to do. They were nice kids, but they ALL seemed to lack experience and didn't seem to be in great physical shape. It took more than twice the amount of time it took with Tony's crew even though the amount of furniture and boxes were the same, as was the floor we moved to. The distance was actually 15 miles shorter--we moved less than a mile away. Just as concerning was their overall lack of self-awareness: they didn't bring any food and ran out of water very early in the day. I went and bought them all lunch and drinks because I were worried they were going to pass out or hurt themselves! My husband and I felt like were were babysitting. I am very sad to give a poor review considering my first experience was so good, but if you happen to get this group of guys, you are in for a LONG, FRUSTRATING, EXPENSIVE day. It seems strange to think the less experienced movers actually made a lot more money than Tony's group, who were fantastic. Be sure to request Tony's group if you choose this company! read more

They even sent a fifth man. They disassemble and reassemble large pieces, including a treadmill. And it works perfectly in the basement, which is where we wanted it. Devon Movers showed up early and did a great job! Really nice guys... especially Charles, who did everything with a smile and was in good spirits the whole time. Just make sure you get all of the costs in an email, as I was initially overcharged for rolls of tape. I spoke to the owner of Devon and he graciously reimbursed me and apologized for the mistake the mover had made on my paperwork. Also, make sure to ask that all their wardrobe boxes come with a bar... one of them didn't and so I had to box up some clothes at the last minute. I recently used Devon movers for the second time, and unfortunately it wasn't nearly as enjoyable of an experience as the first time (which was a great experience!) The good: The crew! These guys were excellent! They showed up early, moved quickly, wrapped and secured all of my belongings so that nothing was damaged along the way, and were in good spirits the whole day despite having to move from the 3rd floor of a courtyard building to the 2nd floor of my new place (neither of which has an elevator). The bad: Although I received a contract stating that the rates were $85/hour + a flat fee of $85 for transportation and equipment/materials, at the end of the afternoon, they tried to charge me for packing materials. I showed the crew the contract which clearly stated that those should be included and was put in touch with their office manager to get it straightened out. I was told that their practices recently changed, and that their advertised prices were wrong. After a bit more back and forth, they graciously said that they would honor the contract...which, since it was a contract, I'm not sure if they couldn't...but it was a pleasant enough exchange nonetheless. The ugly: As soon as we moved everything out of my old apartment into the truck and were getting ready to leave, we tried to start the truck only to realize that it was completely and utterly dead. We had to wait an hour and a half for their boss to get out there and try to jump start it, and when that didn't work, they needed to go buy a new battery. On top of this the truck (which they told me was their "old truck") didn't use keys to start...(WTF?!) and instead was started with some sort of hot-wired coat hanger contraption that I had never seen the likes of before...it was just a strange situation. All in all, I am unlikely to use them again, and likely wouldn't recommend Devon unless you are able to make sure to get a signed contract before hand that clearly spells out exactly what the costs are (as I had). Additionally, make sure to request that they send their new truck so that you don't get stuck in the same situation I was in. read more

Beware. Between my experience and some of the other reviews I have read, it seems like Devon doesn't shy away from cancelling. I booked Devon in early April for a May 31st move because the last day of the month is obviously a popular moving day...I wanted to make sure I snagged someone before all of them were booked. They called and cancelled on me 3 weeks after booking (on May 12th). His reasoning was sketchy. First he said they had vandalism on their fleet (you have 3 weeks to clean it up!!!!), then he said they were overbooked. He kept telling me that he wanted to let me know now so that I had time to find someone else. NO ONE ELSE IS AVAILABLE...obviously. I consulted 8 other companies and each of them were booked for that day. I insisted that he make it work for me and he said they would keep me on the books as long as I was flexible. Not happening.. I ended up having to change my move in and move out date and pay a premium rate for a company to help me out after hours on a Friday. Still a better alternative than trusting these guys. We used Devon Moving to move from Chicago to Denver. Frank, the owner came to our house twice to make sure that all our furniture and boxes fit in a truck he was planning to use. One day before the move 3 guys packed our furniture in less than 2 hours. Day of the move, showed up on time. We asked Frank to deliver our furniture to Denver on Saturday morning. 8 am on Saturday Frank called and said that he will be at our place at 9am. He arrived ten to 9am. Nothing is broken. I'd never used movers before, and was thoroughly impressed. I had spine surgery not too long ago and made the decision to move pretty last minute. As you can imagine, I wasn't totally prepared for the movers when they arrived (right on time!). They estimated 2 hours for my move, and it took 2.5 (I was planning on it taking 3 - I had a lot of stuff and was downsizing from a 2 bed to a 1 bed apartment). These guys were machines. My apartment was empty in the blink of an eye and when I mentioned particular pieces had sentimental value (a dresser a great uncle made for my grandma when he worked at a furniture manufacturer and a sewing table that my dad built for me), they took extra good care of the items. They disassembled a shelving unit that was going in the trash so I wouldn't have to do it. The only thing that was a little odd was that the company told me to have cash for the move and the movers were expecting a credit card (either way didn't bother me, but they accepted the cash). The team was friendly, polite and professional. They asked questions and busted their butts on a hot day. read more

In 2005 I hired Devon movers to move my family from Lincoln park to Avondale into our first townhouse. They were wonderful, nothing was broken or really damaged at all. They were fast and polite and very helpful and understanding throughout the process. Alex, one of the owners is wonderful! We recently (March 2012) moved out of our townhouse to a new construction home in Downers Grove and decided to hire Devon Movers again after getting several estimates from competitors. Again, Alex and his team provided fast, safe and polite service. Alex even dropped off wardrobe boxes the day before the move to help us get finished packing. On the day of the move the truck and 4 men arrived on time at 8am and we were fully unloaded by 3pm in Downers Grove. I was worried about the guys bumping walls and otherwise causing damage to our brand new house, however my worry was not necessary. They made sure to protect the floors and other sensitive areas with the moving blankets. Nothing major was bumped or scratched. This move involved 3 large appliances and many large furniture pieces. If I ever was to move again the first company I would call is Devon Movers! read more

Frank is obviously a good guy, and the crew of workers he had moving my stuff were sweet and adorable. That said, there were some initial complications regarding a broken down truck and a cancellation of my move a week prior - which made me lose my mind. There I was trying to find new moving company a week before my move - which is simply impossible unless you're loaded with cash (which I'm not). Luckily, Frank and Devon came through - they actually rented a truck in order to move me since theirs was broke down and I couldn't find new movers with the short notice. They were inexpensive, worked their *@sses off, and were super nice to boot. Moved my apt down 3 flights and to the new place up 3 flights. Best money I think I ever spent, considering. If you're organized/packed having a mover come early might be the greatest surprise ever. - RELIABLE; They made it down to our new apartment faster than we did; They handled all our possessions with care - SKILLED; we have a very tough couch to move and with a little wrangling they were able to move it with a minimum of hassle - RESPONSIBLE; they came to check out our furniture and apartment the week before; they wrapped and taped everything that had glass on it; - HONEST; we paid exactly the price we were quoted More details: Frank scheduled and managed the entire move. He was our point of contact from day one and was present during the entire job. We had a relatively small move in that we only had the movers take our furniture but we had quite a bit of large furniture. Pros: they're cheap wrap your things really well seem to genuinely care about what they're doing Nothing was damaged Cons: I apparently "should've known better," and had the guy who answers the phone come and see my place to determine how long it would take and how many guys I'd need. (This is on the heels of me getting scolded by the one guy when I started pressuring him on time). It started taking WAY longer than what I was told. A con to them wrapping every single piece so thoroughly that it could basically survive a nuclear holocaust is that it's incredibly time consuming! I had to tell the guy that we only had 30 minutes left to use my elevator and I realized they had only packed up my boxes at that point. I was told it would take about 3 hours for 2 guys. I moved from a 1 bedroom to a 1 1/2 bedroom apartment. It took 4 1/2 hours. They stopped at a restaurant on their way to my apartment so I had to call after waiting a while to see where they were. I couldn't find one of the guys for a while only to find him on his cell phone. I had every box labeled according to the room it belonged in, they completely ignored it. Overall I have to say I'm happy that they started putting urgency on things but would not use them again or recommend them. read more

I cannot say in good faith that this is the best company for the price. When Frank did my walk through, he said 4 or 5 hours for my 3 bedroom apartment move. That's a 4 guy team at $115/hour. When they showed up, there were only 2 men for the first hour, then 4 men for a couple hours, then 3 men, then 4 men again. Now, they do charge you accordingly based on the men they have working, but it stretched my "4-5" hour move to almost 9 hours!! By the way, the rate for 2 guys is not half of $115, it's $75. The next thing they get you on is tape and wrap. Now, that may be a common charge in the industry, but he certainly did a nice job downplaying it during walk through. It came out to $238 for all that stuff. At the end of the day, I couldn't believe the price. When I told Henry, the guy in charge that day what Frank had said about the amount of time, he said "no way." Top it off, I spent $1300 and still had to go back to the apartment for stuff that was left behind. Now, the crew was great. Nice guys, professional and courteous. Not the quickest guys I've ever seen. They packed the truck meticulously and that had to add an hour or two to the overall move. Frank is nice too, not the most outgoing person, but I can tell he's a shrewd business man and knows how to get the most out of his customer. I highly recommend you shop around because for the money I spent, it would have been nice to have some expectation of what was coming and not to have to go back for more of my stuff. read more

With all the nightmares you hear about moving companies in the Chicago area I was very hesitant to use anybody. I am glad I did. DMC was great through the whole process. From the confirmation of date, checking in throughout the day to let me know when they would be there and moving my stuff it was all top notch. Ah-ma-zing! When I found out I had to hire a moving company for a huge delivery that UPS refused to bring down 2 flights of stairs, I was seriously nervous! Thankfully I came across Devon Moving Company. Senam coordinates all of the moves and is so sweet and super organized -- she broke everything down in a very easy to understand way, and accommodated a last minute appointment for us. Get this -- after all of that, UPS didn't bother to deliver the shipment (ugh). Devon was already on site when we realized UPS would not be there -- the team was super understanding and professional -- even though we stood them up. WARNING!! DO NOT BE FOOLED as I was by their seemingly high satisfaction rating. These guys are the absolute WORST!!! DO NOT USE DEVON Movers, ever!!! I called Devon Moving company on Wednesday April 30, 2014. They agreed to handle my move and together we set up for them to come to my residence on Thursday May 1st to move my belongings out of my old and into my new apartment. We agreed that they would show up between 1 and 3pm Thursday May 1, 2014. Around 2pm on the 1st, I called to ensure I was still on their schedule. The person answering the phone told me I was on the schedule for the afternoon and they would be there as planned. Around 4:30pm I called them again. This time, I had to call back about 3 times before someone answered. Right away, I knew I was in trouble. The guy started telling me how he and his guys were "tired", told me that it was raining and that traffic was bad. I asked if they were still coming and he said yes. I waited for another hour or so and started calling back. Again it took 3 or 4 phone calls to get through to someone. During this second call, the guy assured me they were still coming, that his guys had about 20 minutes left on the job they were doing and promised to call me back in 10 minutes. Two and a half hours later and no phone call back as promised and I realized that I was in serious trouble. My previous landlord was very strict and it was imperative that I get out of my old apartment or face her wrath. I told Devon Movers of this and they assured me they were coming but never showed up. Devon moving company promised to show up and agreed to move me. Instead of showing up as promised, they didn't come and didn't call. They completely blew me off, leaving me to try to find an alternate mover willing to come the same day. If you need movers, if you are looking for a company who keeps their appointment to move you, if you want to work with professionals who take their jobs seriously and who will not blow you off, steer far wide and clear of Devon Movers. They are some of the most unprofessional, undedicated and careless people I have encountered in any business. Unbelievable!!! read more

Stellar move! I had to move my 1 bedroom apartment from Chicago to DC for work, and scheduled my move about 2 months in advance. I didn't get a confirmation call one week beforehand as promised, but when I called Frank the next day (the owner, I believe), he assured me that we were all set to go. Although they showed up almost an hour late on Thursday morning, they had called me while stuck in traffic so I at least had fair warning. From then on it was smooth sailing. Joe and Jerry packed up the 16' truck with great care and expediency, wrapping my items to a degree of safety that almost made me laugh. BONUS: I had a few big Ikea bags with random items, plus two bikes, skiis, etc, and they loaded it all in no problem (or extra charges). There's no strict rule about every little item being in a box, etc, and these guys are just generally down to earth about getting my things from point A to point B in the easiest way possible. We all did the drive east that same day, and they met me at my new building at 9am SHARP the next morning, in Washington! Within one hour they had unloaded the truck, re-assembled my bed, unwrapped everything, and taken all the trash with them. No hassles, no worries, and I will certainly be using them to move me back to Chicago next year when my field assignment ends. Thanks again! Unfortunately, we had a torrential downpour just before the truck arrived continued by a steady rain throughout the entire move. The sun did come out at the end, of course! This company came highly recommended by a friend who used them a few years back. I gave them a call and the guy who answered asked me how when the move it s going to be, how many bedrooms and where too. I told him that I have one bedroom and i mentioned that besides my bed, nightstands and dresser i have an extra dresser a rocking chair and a crib. On the day of the move EVERYTHING was packed in boxes, beds cribs and rocking chair disassembled,mattresses wrapped in plastic etc... They gad to carry them downstairs and load then unload and carry them upstairs. Two stories down then one story up. Elevators at both ends! Distance between the places was a 7-8 min drive on a non busy street. I was told by the man I talked to when I scheduled the move that this should take about 3 hours, 4 at the most . They called me half an hr earlier to see if i was ready to start the move. I was. They were sent with a small truck. We were told all the stuff won t fit in the truck so they had to load on truck and come again. I called the company and i was told that s a truck that fits a one bedroom apartment and if the stuff doesn t fit in it I probably have too much stuff. I was asked "what do you have in that apartment? How much stuff do you have?! You would probably need more men and a bigger truck then but i don t have anything available right now"... Very dismissive.... I would assume it s their strategy to make more money. Send a smaller truck so the stuff doesn t fit and of course then it s ur fault bcs u have too much stuff..... What was i supposed to do?! I had to move that day. Had some "fragile" marked boxes which i thought they would put on top and handle with care, but they would stack other boxes on top of them without any worries.... The same apartment (minus the crib dresser rocking chair and 6 baby clothes boxes ) was moved a year and a half ago by my husband and another friend in 4 hours in a u haul truck similar to the one the movers used in this move, pretty much the same size) and they are not professionals .... This time it took 6.5 hours!!! For a one bedroom apartment!!! I find it ridiculous! Almost $600 (this after they called the company and gave us "a discount").... It is outrageous! This was the first time we hired a moving company and our experience was not good. My friend that recommended them to me had way more stuff, heavier, a bigger place and she paid around 400$..... So seems like the price they give at first ($300 in my case) it s actually double in the end ($600 in this case).... Shame! read more

I wish I could give this place 5 stars because the guys who came to move my stuff (Brandon, Astro, and Charles) were amazing, but I have to take a star off for the scheduling aspect of the process. Brandon, Astro, and Charles were INCREDIBLE! They were so professional, polite, and hardworking! They never once stopped and never complained and it was a hot day! They were very careful with all my things and everything arrived in the same condition it left my apartment! They were also able to move me out of the old apartment and into the new apartment in 2 hours! I would use the company again to move (hopefully I won't need to) if those three were my movers. Now onto the not so good part... I called this place a few weeks before I had to move just to check out rates. I was told because my move involved 2 or more flights of stairs at each location that I had to have 3 guys instead of 2 so the price per hour would be higher. Okay, that's fine. I know it's hard to work to climb up and down stairs with furniture since I have moved myself every year for the past 4 years. I called again a week or two later to check the availability and was told they still had availability for the day I was looking for. Unfortunately I wasn't able to schedule the move during that phone call because of outside factors. When I called for the 3rd time to finally schedule the move I was told I needed to have 4 guys not 3. I knew that I had previously been told 3 guys would be adequate and I was moving a one bedroom with very little furniture (bed, desk, dresser, recliner, and some bookcases) and 3 guys would be sufficient. I told the person that and he said that was fine, 3 guys was do-able. He then asked me to give him an inventory of what I was moving, asked for the move date, and my preferred time. He told me he would send me a confirmation email the next day. The following day I received nothing and decided to call the company. When I called they had no record of me calling and did not have me scheduled. The girl on the phone (Laura) even tried to tell me I needed 4 movers when previously when I had spoken to her she said 3 would be fine. At this point I was very irritated. I had to give her all the information again and she said that they no longer had the same time I had requested available. I told her that I had scheduled that time and I expected movers to be there at that time. She spoke with the owner (apparently the man I had spoken with who didn't put in any information) and he said they could be there at my preferred time. When she sent the confirmation email my address was wrong so I called her back and asked her to change it. A day later I still had not received a confirmation email with the correct address so I had to call again. Needless to say I was very worried about the movers actually showing up on the day and time I had requested. Fortunately everything worked out and the movers were excellent. One more negative- they didn't tell me that they charge an extra $10 fee to use a credit card so I had to run to the bank the day of the move to get cash to avoid that fee. read more

I used this company when we were in a major jam last August of 2013. I am moving again, and wish they were in our area so we could use them again. Frank was very professional and accommodating. His crew worked so fast, and were so nice. They were truly a godsend that day. The original movers we hired just didn't show up AT ALL! (Marathon Movers) But Frank squeezed us in, gave us a very fair rate, and the crew did the impossible move in a small time frame for us. Will never forget them and can't thank them enough! read more

I hired Devon Movers to move my elderly mother. She was very anxious about this move. The crew (Henry, Jerry and David) went above and beyond to make her feel comfortable. They were cautious, courteous, and very fast! They even personally helped my mother walk across an uneven snow covered area to make sure she didn't slip. To make things even more attractive, their prices are pretty low compared to other local movers and they offer a 3% discount if you pay cash (believe me it adds up!).
