I promise you, this is a total local secret... I will NEVER take my cars anywhere else to be worked on. Sam and William and their crew are amazing! You can call them to get a quote over the phone and there is no hesitation or back and forth. They quote you a price, and that's the price you pay. They never tack on extra costs or services you don't need. And if you call around to compare that price, they're usually about half the cost as anywhere else. They find the problem and fix it. They always call before they start work to discuss what needs to be done, and won't do anything without your approval. Two weeks ago, we dropped my car off after it kept dying while I was driving, but starting up again after a few minutes of rest. I dropped it off at Dere and called the next day to check on it. Dusty, the assistant, answered and told me while he wasn't totally sure, it was looking like my entire engine needed to be replaced and they weren't able to do that, but standby by for an update. So now I'm stressed, panicked, calling around to other shops, trying to work the logistics of getting my car towed from Dere to a new shop, when they call to say that it's not the engine at all. After having my car for 3 days, they still couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, so I was back to square 1. Really bizarre that it went from 'your entire engine needs to be replaced' to 'we can't figure out what's going on, but it's something minor'. Fast forward two weeks and now I'm getting a "suspension fault" notice, either related to my air bags or my cooling system or something like that. I decide to give Dere another try - I even called and talked to Dusty again, explained that I was happy to take it to another shop but wanted to give them the opportunity to fix it if they wanted the business (they are very close to my house, so the convenience factor won over the last incident). I called them yesterday (Thursday) to ask if they could take a look at my car this weekend. Dusty told me sure, bring it in Saturday and they'll get it taken care of. I call today (Friday) and speak to Dusty again to ask if I can drop it off this evening instead, and he again confirms they can do the work tomorrow and dropping it off tonight is great. We show up, my husband exhausted from a long day at work, our kids starving and in pajamas, and William tells us that he wasn't told that we were coming and that they couldn't look at my car tomorrow. WOW. I'm honestly shocked by how bad the customer service is. William couldn't have cared less and closed the door behind us when we left, no apology, no 'sorry for the misunderstanding', nothing. It's such a shame that instead of using the past 2 days to find a shop that could do the work, we depended on Dere and are now stuck without a car all weekend with 2 kids that have got all kinds of activities. We obviously won't be back. I live pretty close to this shop so I was really hoping this relationship would work, but I'm totally done after my last visit. read more

I had some trouble with my radiator and my car started smoking on the freeway. I drove it to the nearest mechanic and they quoted me to replace it. I shopped around and found Dere and talked with Sam, who quoted significantly cheaper! He was responsive, informative, and got my car done ASAP. When he was finished, he told me that they didn't need to fix all the parts the other mechanic had recommended, so it was in fact CHEAPER than his original quote. If this part won't fix it then there's plenty more we'd love to try. Dere automotive is fairly fast and very courteous, but I think they're over their heads with cars post 1985. They just love to replace any part within reach even if it's not associated with the problem at hand. We tried them once and were very unimpressed. These guys seem to be pretty honest. I've had my car towed here twice so that they could take a look to see what was wrong with it. Instead of telling me that this, this, and this was wrong with it to try and get money out of me, they told me exactly what they THOUGHT was wrong with it and directed me to another place that could better assist me with it. I really appreciated that. They don't do any work on your car unless they call you before and let you know what they think they'll have to do and how much it'll cost. Being a girl and going into an auto shop alone, you just never know who is going to try and rip you off because you don't know a tire from a steering-wheel. Lol. read more

I went against my better judgement here, but I was in a position that I suspect this establishment knows how to take advantage of. I hope you can learn from my mistake. I recently moved to Seattle and needed to get my CA car registered. Oops, it failed the emissions test: now I have to take it to state approved emissions testing garage where the problem is fixed, or I spend at least 150 dollars trying to fix it, in which case I can receive a waiver for a one-time registration. I dropped the car off, and they got back to me fairly quickly. They claimed to check for the "obvious" issues that could have been causing my problem, but were unable to find anything wrong. From there, they presented me with a choice: they could either charge up to 150 dollars so I could get my waiver, or they could order a part that had a "90%" chance of fixing the problem. See the predicament? I could either put $150 down the drain with no chance of anything changing, or I gamble a $100 on their supposedly "90%" chance that the part would fix the problem. Kind of like a prisoner's dilemma. Big surprise: it didn't fix it. I'm sure there have been many worse experiences with mechanics then what I had. But despite this, I found it very unscrupulous of them to take advantage of my position and squeeze an extra hundred dollars out of me. Do they deserve 1 star? I think so. The thing that really gets me is the line about "there's a 90% chance this will fix it." Had they been more honest with me I wouldn't be giving them such a bad review. I recommend Lioe's Automotive on Beacon Hill for auto work around the area: they were my first choice but since they aren't an "authorized emissions garage" they couldn't offer a waiver. I've had some work done with them before and they've been great. read more

And I've always had same day service for multiple repairs, even when they order parts from their warehouse across town! They call and give me a quote before doing any work, and even offer less expensive alternatives if possible or explain if/when it's appropriate to delay a repair or service on my car. I just replaced my transmission and the quote they gave me was far lower than other places. They go the extra mile to make sure you are satisfied with their work. Tried to scam me telling me I needed to spend $800+ for new brakes, when mine were just fine! I took my minivan in for an oil change there last month. I was hoping to support a local business. The oil change was pricier than at a chain, but that was okay with me. They called me after the oil change to let me know they had noticed some squeaking in my brakes, and had inspected them. They said I needed new front and rear brakes ASAP! That they were so low I might already need new rotors, and they really recommended I get them done that day as I would definitely ruin my rotors within another month if I didn't get them changed. The estimate seemed high, and I didn't have time to leave my van there that day. I called Les Schwab for an estimate a month later and brought it in the next day to have a brake inspection. Surprise! I didn't need new brakes- front or rear! The front is getting a little bit low, but not enough to do yet, so they recommended I just get another inspection in 3 to 5 months. Rear was just fine. Dere Auto apparently saw a young woman who didn't seem particularly knowledgeable about cars and tried to take advantage of her. I won't be going back there again. read more

Well, my check engine light went off by itself anyway, but I know where I'm taking my car to the next time it breaks down. Yes, this place! I took my '01 Mustang there after it failed an emissions test. They found the problem right away, (a botched repair job by the previous owner), and fixed it for far less than than expected. I brought my car to dere auto and had a half an hour conversation with one of their mechanics about my vehicle. I decided to just get An oil change and the mechanic Frankie told me it would be about an hour..... Which is a long oil change to begin with. But I said "okay no problem I'll see you in an hour". I showed up and hour and 10 mins later and asked a different guy at the front desk if I could pay for my oil change. He then told me that no one even touched my car yet and that the mechanic Frankie had totally forgot to tell anyone about my car or fill out a work order. I had a good experience my first time here, but if they are letting jokers like this work here I have no faith in this place having high standards. Absolutely not going back. read more

Took my truck in for an oil change and asked them to do a visual check on my brakes. When I went to pick up my truck they had an extra charge of $40.00. I asked them what that was for and they told me it was for checking the brakes.....really!!!! They told me my truck was harder than most! It a Chevrolet Silverado.Most shops do this for free! Not a fan of a shop that's has hidden cost for things they shouldn't. Not impressed with these tactics. They should tell customers how expensive they are to do visual inspection! I won't go back!!!
