I entrusted my 2000 328CI, which I drove out of the showroom 25 years ago to Ryan and crew to address a driver actuator replacement. It was completed without a hitch on the very same day. I've been taking my now-20-year-old BMW to Foreign Car Workshop for several years now. Every time, the service has been above and beyond. They do a great job of explaining exactly what's going on with the car and the nature of the repairs. They work fast yet don't sacrifice quality. Recently I needed a bulb replaced in my headlight but couldn't manage it myself. I brought the bulb to the shop and they changed it out in 10 minutes in the parking lot. Didn't even charge for it! Finding a skilled mechanic that you can trust completely is a often a difficult grind. But for six years Ryan and his crew were an incredible resource in every way in keeping my old Nissan Frontier on the road without crushing our family finances. Most times I called, Ryan was able to provide an initial diagnosis, get me scheduled and give me an idea of what might be the problem. They were always straightforward with their thinking, quick with the estimates and on-time with completing the work--always having it fixed and ready when promised due to accurate scheduling. The other thing I appreciated immensely was that unlike most shops, The Foreign Car crew never tried to find problems to fix or fixed problems that didn't fix the problem--both of which can be incredibly profitable for shops but incredible costly and maddening for customers. When your truck is approaching 200K miles, there are many things that can go wrong. Just having Ryan's mechanical expertise to start diagnosing the problem was a huge relief each time. When the problem was beyond the scope of his shop--a new transmission, emission work or auto body for example--he always had a great local referral he could provide to other shops that also treated me right. That network was incredibly valuable and time-saving. I also experienced another incredible pay-it-forward moment in his shop that left me speechless. The week I was laid off we had a truck breakdown and I mentioned it in his office. Unknown to me one of his customers heard my plight and paid for my repair, an incredible testament not just to this shop but the type of customers he attracts. I'm still stunned and grateful by the kindness of this customer that lifted me up at a very low point. In my own selfishness, I'm only posting this review now that we have left Seattle and am not concerned about his great shop being overrun with too many new customers. Its a small family operation that is West Seattle is lucky to have--and I'm proud to have been their customer for so long. I hope they don't get gentrified out of the area like so many of the good small businesses that have been so invaluable to the community. Big thanks to Ryan and the crew at Foreign Car Workshop! I have a Fiat 500e, and the only official shop is in Kirkland... and incredibly overpriced! My car has a fuse that keeps blowing, and they troubleshooted it several times, but ultimately have determined it's some sort of design flaw that will keep happening. So today, they replaced the blown fuse (again) at no charge and showed me how to replace it myself in the future. BEST service and fair prices! THANK YOU!! read more

We were about to head out on a trip this morning and I discovered a leak. I drove over to Foreign Car Workshop with no appointment. The guy at the the computer was obviously busy; I would have understood if he had said sorry, you need to make an appointment, or I'll get to you when I can sometime this morning. But when I described the leak, he figured it was just a normal discharge from the AC/defrost system, and went out and checked the underside. That's all it was----but my point is I did not know that, and he went above and beyond to provide peace and mind. He replaced my brakes and I kept hearing noises he worked on it until the noises were gone and I was happy with the repair he had done for me. My husband called and made an appointment for service on my car and when he showed up on the appointed day these guys had no record of the appointment. They were accommodating and the service was done competently. But then, several months later, when we reached out by e-mail with questions about scheduling a service, we didn't even have the courtesy of a reply. A follow-up e-mail was equally ignored. So we're left to conclude that - while apparently they are nice guys and able mechanics - their communication abilities are completely lacking. So we won't be wasting our time trying to deal with Foreign Car Workshop anymore as they seem a bit unorganized. If they don't have the time or willingness to respond to customer e-mails then they shouldn't list an address on their website. And if they can't manage a calendar, how are we to trust that they can handle the intricacies of a modern vehicle? read more

I can finally say that I trust a mechanic. When I was growing up I was fortunate because my dad took care of our cars -- he knew anything and everything about cars because he restored hotrods and Harleys as a hobby. Living in a different state from my dad has forced me to hop around from shop to shop. Not to feed the stereotype, but it really is quite intimidating to be a woman (a woman who also knows a thing or two about her own car) and talk to a mechanic. Why? Most of the time I feel like I'm getting scammed. Before coming here, we used Jiffy Lube for routine maintenance. My SUV is 5 years old, well maintained and has less than 70K miles on it. It seems like Jiffy Lube always starts off okay, but gets worse over time. Every time I would take my car in for an oil change at Jiffy Lube, I couldn't leave the shop without spending $200 and also being told that I needed to replace something else that I swore they replaced the last time. This time my maintenance light came on telling me I was due for a B1 service. I called Jiffy Lube and asked for an estimate. They said it would start around $450. I hopped on Yelp, messaged Foreign Car Workshop, copy & pasted everything that the B1 entailed and got a ~$150 quote back. I replied just to make sure that included the tire rotation and everything else I needed and they said "Yep, we've got everything covered for ~$150." How in the world could the price be that much different from Jiffy Lube to Foreign Car Workshop? I scheduled my appointment immediately through Yelp, took my car in and an hour and a half later, my bill came to exactly what they told me it would. Ryan went through the checklist of everything they did which was nice because he actually printed out what the B1 service entailed directly from the Acura website. He also told me when I would be due for other services. Maybe it's because it's been a family owned business for so many years or maybe it's just that they are good people, but I didn't feel like I was being jerked around at all. I truly appreciate this kind of service. As long as I live in Seattle, I will continue to bring our cars here ...and recommend them to every friend we know that has a car, whether it's foreign or not. read more

I just had a lovely experience here today. For the last three weeks or so, I've been DIY on my car, and doing well, until today, when an 02 sensor was in so tight, I just didn't have the muscle, or the leverage, to get it out. I was afraid to jack it up too high, for fear of falling car, to try to get more leverage. Someone told me to try the "nice boys" up at Foreign Car workshop, that they were very fair. I went up there with the part I bought, and Ryan was very nice, the quote was lower than I think many would have offered me, AND he didn't act like I was a silly girl. (Like someone elsewhere did a couple weeks ago. EHEM.) That right there endeared him to me as a mechanic. I hate being patronized and ripped off because I'm a woman. Anyone should hate it, of course. Anyway. I was surprised when he said he could do it right then, and he put my part in, and the price was exactly what he told me, AND he didn't try to convince me to do anything else. I passed my emissions! I think I found my new mechanic, that hopefully I won't need for a while...It reminded me of a nice small town experience. read more

Disappointed. Fixed rotors on my 2010 Mercedes E550 but used cheap brake pads and now the brakes squeak so bad it's embarrassing.

I reviewed them four years ago, and they're still the most amazing folks around. I've now been using them for 30 years (starting when Ryan's dad Perry ran it), have recommended to every West Seattle friend that I have (and a few outside West Seattle), and have nothing but total gratitude. Even for routine maintenance like oil changes, I always take it to them because I know they'll look my car over and give me an honest sense of if there's anything else that's needed. And they won't promote service that isn't needed. We haven't seen them as much this past two years because we bought a Nissan Leaf electric that's still under dealer's warranty, so I actually look forward to the times when my 1993 Toyota needs routine servicing, because I get to take it there. He even cheerfully re-computed the transaction when I discovered that I could get a discount through yelp Since the bill was rather large for my budget. I was so impressed with his service that I brought my husbands car in the next week. Since both of our cars are a little older, he even found a used part for us so that we wouldn't have to pay as much money. Foreign Car Workshop will be the only place I bring my cars from now on. They were fantastic, fair and were super friendly on top of it. I have been bringing my Mini Cooper to the dealer for years and this last time around, they gave me some ridiculous quotes on things that "were needing fixed". They felt a bit exaggerated (by a bit, I mean ridiculously exaggerated). So, I emailed the nice gentlemen at Foreign Car Workshop for a soft quote of these items to see if they had a better quote from the dealer. Indeed they did. Brought the Mini in the next week for them to work on. They called a couple hours in and informed me that the items the dealer said needed to get done, were in fact not something to be concerned about yet (and maybe never on one) but that I could use some new brakes (the brakes were very old). They fixed her up great and saved me a ton of moolah in the process. They don't nicle and dime. They know their cars. They won't tell you to do something you don't need...unlike so many places sadly. I have been going to Foreign Car Workshop for over 20 years. I used this service for 10 years while living in West Seattle. I then moved to Mercer Island and continued to bring my cars there. I have run into people who come regularly from much farther away. Three key points: They are excellent, honest and reasonably priced. They have never failed me. Early on, they fixed my car or truck for a fraction of what others estimated and they figured out things that other mechanics could not get a handle on. I was once in the shop waiting for my car and one woman told Perry about a death in her family. The next woman that came in brought him a loaf of bread. Perry's son Ryan took over the shop and has the same gentle kindness with people. I joined Yelp so I could write a review about FGW. I was looking for a place in West Seattle for a simple oil change but chringed at the thought of having to take it to Jiffy Lube or Grease Monkey (based on those reviews), so after searching through Yelp I found Forieng Car Workshop. They couldnt have been nicer and quickly did my oil change while I waited, they explained everything they checked and didnt try to push on any additional services! I am almost speechless at this place. This may be the first car repair shop in 35 years of car ownership that I feel I can trust. Simple, straight-forward service for simple problems. And very fairly priced. When I went in for an oil change, Ryan just changed the oil and charged a very reasonable price. You can't imagine my surprise at this exchange unless you witnessed the shiny bauble on 35th that told me last year I needed $1,000-$3,000 work on my Mini when all I ended up needing was an oil change! But there's more. When my car started billowing smoke on Capitol Hill last month and was flat bedded to his shop, arriving at closing time, he did a thorough look on the ground, lifted it and examined it until he narrowed the diagnosis to a "possible crack in the radiator cap", wiped it off and when I tried to pay, he said "we can take care of it next time." Ryan was our mechanic today when we sent a car for a buyers inspection. He definitely spent an hour or slightly over doing a very thorough check of the car. He is quiet but does a great job. He wrote neatly in our report and professionally explained to us what the goods and bads were about the car.
