All the tire shops in west Seattle were saying they couldn't see me until later than afternoon (it was about 8am, they had just opened) but Alki let me drive right up, they found the nail, pulled it out, put in the plug, filled up the tire and sent me on my way! I came to John last minute with a tail light issue. I called right when he opened, and told him I didn't know if it was just the light bulbs that went out, or something electrical, costing more. I expressed my worry about taking it to Honda and them gauging me for labor, so he told me to come by asap and he'll squeeze me in to take a look. Luckily for me, it was just the bulbs and he got it changed within the time it took me to have breakfast down the road at Luna Park Cafe. The price was absolutely reasonable, and I've now found my new go-to auto shop. I even sent a friend a couple months later, who had just as great of an experience. If I could give ten (10) stars I would. My 2002 Jeep Wrangler was stalled on Southbound I-5 and would not restart. As I was waiting for the tow truck, I called another Auto Repair shop to see if I could have my Jeep towed to their shop but they informed me they would not be able to even look at my Jeep until June 17, 2025. I called Alki Auto Repair and spoke to Michael. He was very friendly and agreed to allow my Jeep to be towed. When I arrived, he greeted me with a smile. It appeared to me that the shop was very busy. He called later that day to say they had been able to diagnose the problem, thoroughly explained it to me and stated they would have the Jeep repaired the next day, which they did. I am so happy with the service provided. A few days later, John the owner, texted me to make sure my Jeep was running smoothly. Very impressive. If you value service, communication and trust, look elsewhere. The two managers frequently gave conflicting quotes and stories about what was happening, at least if I kept calling them for an update. At one point, after they'd had my van for 5 weeks with barely any communication, we had a somewhat heated conversation in which I expressed my frustration and how not having the van is a huge inconvenience as it is our second vehicle. For a moment it seemed like we had a new understanding, but the very next week it was the same indifference all over again: no progress and no communication. I have an older import van that many garages don't work on, so I guess beggars can't be choosers. And this place definitely made me feel like a beggar. read more

I brought my truck in for repair. I got a quote for $500. The amount grew to over $2500. I came in to discuss the increase bill, to include $500 for a locksmith. I tried to discuss this with the owner, John. John was very unreasonable and would not talk to me correctly. He started yelling at me. I asked him why he was yelling. He said he would tell if he wanted. I have a heart condition so I sat down. He said you can sit all you want. You need to pay the bill or I keep your truck charging you rent each day to keep it in the yard. I couldn't believe how mean and unkind he was. I was very disappointed in the experience. I would never recommend them to anyone. They were so hard hearted mean. read more

Don't do it. Promises made not kept. Hot and cold. When I walked in first thing in the morning, I was greeted by 2 professional, kind men. I told them I needed my brakes done asking them to call me after opening them up to discuss whether I would need the rotors done. The two men helping me were the owner and his son. They promised the car would be done before the end of the day, as I said I needed it for a commitment the following morning at 7 a.m. They agreed and said they would call me later to discuss the brake needs. When I told them I had no ride home, the son graciously offered and gave me a ride. They later called to discuss brake needs as promised and a plan was made. They again promised the car back to me before the end of the day. Some hours later the owner called to inform me they had ordered the wrong parts. The correct parts would not arrive to their shop until the following morning and my car would NOT be ready until the next afternoon! There was nothing that could be done, the car still had it's brakes torn apart, I would just have to break my commitment. What?! A simple brake job, botched because they didn't confirm the brakes needed before, or even after, ordering them. The brakes were taken apart by them right in front of their own faces but they ordered the wrong replacement parts?! I didn't get my car back until the following afternoon and I had to get my own ride there. I was unable to make my commitment as my vehicle was supposed to be used for it. It was also the most expensive brake job I've ever had done. I do not recommend Alki Auto Repair as they are untrustworthy, expensive, don't keep their word, are selectively helpful, and are clearly not real sharp if they don't confirm parts needed before ordering them. The strangest part of all is they apparently didn't even recognize their major foible and the hardships it created for me because within a few days I received a call from the owner looking for me to bring my car in for any needed work, they had some openings...as if I would even consider taking my car back there. read more

I would like to start this off by saying that I have never felt compelled to write a negative review about any business on Yelp....until now. Over a three month period, I had to bring my car in NINE times for an ongoing "check Engine" light issue. Every time I came back, it was something new - "Oh it's the airflow sensor"..."Now it's kicking off an O2 sensor issue"..."It's being caused by a vacuum intake". Either they are the most incompetent mechanics in the world, or they are scam artists looking for a way to grift money from unassuming customers. Not only would the reason for the check engine light magically change from time to time, but new necessary repairs seemed to randomly arise every other time we spoke. I repeatedly had to call them to ask for updates, and depending on their mood at the moment, they would either attempt to explain away the nonstop delays in accomplishing work, or give me a curt/dismissive answer. As if I was somehow annoying them by bringing my car into an auto shop, and asking when I might get it back. The final straw was when I brought my car in for the ninth time, and they held onto it for almost two full weeks. When I got it back, the front seat was covered in oil stains, and the check engine light was back on within 24 hours. At this point I was obviously beyond frustrated, and vowed to never step foot in their garage again. Two days after my final encounter with them, I also received a phone call and was told that they had replaced my battery without any advanced consent, or even providing me an estimated cost. They demanded that I return to pay them for something I was unaware of, and completely unrelated to the issue I originally brought the car in for (which again, they never fixed). I pushed back and told them they never solved the original issue and was told "You know what man, good f----n luck" and hung up the phone on me. I wish I could leave a review with 0 stars. I tried this shop. They charged $600 to install a shock. 1 shock. They said they spent 3 hours. Then my other car other broke and i drove it to the shop. After a few days they told me they didn't have the gear to read the computer info and that I had to take it to the dealership. They charged me $350 to tell me that. This included $150 the spent towing my car to their back lot. Yes, they charged me for moving my car around their lot. I also found out he even over/ charged me for the towing and he said that is how they make money by reselling. Very dishonest. read more

I was absolutely disappointed with the work done to my vehicle at this shop. My wife suggested that we tried this shop because she heard someone mentioned it on the West Seattle Blog. Since I like to support local businesses I thought I would give it at try, what a mistake. The issues I had with my car was that the gas pedal had no power and the car would just shot off while I was driving. They replaced three things on the car which were completely unrelated to the car issues, then charged me $700 ( which I wouldn't mind if my car was fixed ) I drove my car home and it was ok, my house it's only a mile from this shop, but the next time I drove it it kept doing the same thing and having the same issues. I called the shop and told the guy that the car still had the same issues and the guy on the phone actually had an attitude, but did agreed to "look at it" again. Someone in the shop called the next day to tell me that they needed it to change something else, and that it was gonna be another $600. I refused and tried to talk to the guy and he wouldn't even discuss. Very bad business. I truly feel disappointed with this shop and I don't recommend it. read more

My boyfriend was here visiting, and I referred him to Alki Auto Repair, because I had a past experience there that was positive for an oil change. While he was waiting for his truck to be finished, a convertible with a Confederate flag was pulled into the garage by one of the employees. My bf who is African American, instantly got really bad vibes and was worried about his truck. They closed the garage and when his truck came back into view he noticed something had shifted, and it was at an odd tilt. We plan to bring his truck to another mechanic to see if any alterations were made that could impact his safety. At this point he is afraid to drive it. He had brought his own oil and filter and was still charged full price for an oil change. I am broken hearted he had this experience in the community that I live in, at a business I recommended. I know for myself I want to hear ahead of time if there are business that condone a hostile or unsafe environment for customers. Literally the worst place you could dream of taking your vehicle. We were loyal customers for years but the service quality and attention to detail have been consistently getting worse. John claims to be understaffed which is true, but only because he is such a horrendous human being no one else will work with him. He has cars sitting on his property that have been waiting six weeks to be fixed that he hasn't even started on. Ours is one of them. Every time I call to check the ETA is I get cussed out and receive a bunch of excuses on why he hasn't touched it yet. I called again today and he literally asked if I know anyone looking for a mechanic job. Maybe John is on drugs now? It would be comical if it wasn't so frustrating. If I was leaving this review seven years ago when I first started taking our car here, it would have easily been five stars. Now I get verbally assaulted for merely insinuating that six weeks is too long for him to have my car without even looking at it. I would take it somewhere else but it won't drive so I had it towed there. Time to pay for another tow to take it somewhere else I guess. What an absolute JOKE. Where do I even begin? I'm an Eagle Scout and have never written reviews on places, but I had to this time... DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. YOU WILL END UP WORSE OFF THAN BEFORE. First of all, I took my car in to have a crankshaft sensor replaced (diagnosed at another shop and replaced at Alki Auto Repair). I have a dash cam that is sensitive and turns on with a "G" sensor. Anytime there's motion, the car door opens, engine turns on, it records. I accidentally recorded most of the time my car spent in their shop (not knowing this feature from my camera was as sensitive as it was beforehand). During the replacement of my Crankshaft Sensor, while the mechanic was revving up my engine (sounded closer to red-lining my engine), immediately following, my engine starts clunking around and making an awful noise. The mechanic says as much in the video from the dash cam. Later on, I hear the mechanic speaking to another employee. The other employee (who I later find out is the Owners Son) asks if my car was running like that before taking it into the shop and working on the Crankshaft Sensor. The mechanic flat out states that it was not running like that before he started the repair. For an issue such as the Crankshaft Sensor and replacing it, should have been an easy fix worth $200 with parts and labor. When I came in to pick my car up (my car was running fine and completely operational before bringing it in, minus the Crankshaft Sensor, and my dash cam proves this) I was told my car had a lot of issues and needed another appointment for them to repair everything on it. As well as a slew of other problems that seemed to "magically pop up" during this repair, my brakes were also suddenly rendered useless as well; Even though they were functioning properly before coming into the shop too. During another part of the video, you can hear the mechanic talk to one of the employees talk about how he was able to get the check engine light off, but that the other issues with the engine were not allowing it to run properly. I was also told that the car is running on 1 cylinder (I had no idea what that meant) and with the brakes almost unresponsive as well, THEY LET ME DRIVE IT OFF THE LOT. That car was an absolute death trap after they repaired it. I live a block away from the shop. If I lived any farther, I would have killed someone, or myself with how poorly the car was functioning and reacting to my commands. I've been driving for 15 years now, and I've never felt more unsafe in a vehicle after they "repaired" it. I'm not a mechanic, and don't claim to know a lot about cars, however, I can tell you with 100% certainty that my car was running and functioning just fine underneath 95,000 miles with all of its normal upkeep performed and maintenance. After considering my options, I went down to try and speak to the owner, John. John attempted to gas light, argue, or otherwise not even listen to my reasoning, even when presented with video evidence that his mechanic FUCKED MY CAR UP. He started yelling at both my partner and I when he wasn't getting his way in the discussion, which turned very quickly to argument, at his behest, along with 2 other employees in the nearby vicinity. This is the worst customer experience I've ever had with any shop I've ever visited. If you like spending thousands of dollars more for a repair that should cost $200, then this is the place for you. Otherwise I'd look at more reviews, and shop around. I ended up taking my car to a Chevron down the road in West Seattle, on 35th Ave. The mechanic there, Andy, said that after he opened up the throttle body control, that there was a large piece of plastic jammed in the intake. I asked how it could have gotten there, as it's not a place accessible to the immediate undercarriage of the car, or through the top of the engine. Andy said that it was likely placed there by the previous mechanic. Whether it be intentional, or accidental, he couldn't be 100% sure of that. But have you, the reader, read the other reviews here? I'm 98% certain it was done intentionally. Once Andy removed that piece of plastic, my car functioned normally and the brakes and engine worked again. Oh, and keep in mind, this piece of plastic Andy found, did NOT break off from anywhere around the throttle body control. He said he inspected the area, and found no signs of plastic pieces damaged anywhere... In conclusion, these people are scammers, con artists, and worst of all, absolute liars. They will not treat you fairly, and have absolutely no interest in helping you, only cashing your check and charging you more... John, you are a very sad excuse for a man... same with your entire team of miscreants. read more

These guys are great! I've been there several times, usually just for a tune up when my Honda tells me it's time to take it in. They always have a spot when I need it (usually a Saturday so I can take it in the morning and pick it up that afternoon) and take good care of it. I had a strange problem last week when all my floor boards were completely soaking wet. I took it into them and they managed to find two separate problems, unrelated to each other, and fixed everything. Then they let me leave the car there all week end while they pointed fans at it so it would dry out. The whole thing wasn't as expensive as I feared it would be and they took a lot of time to make sure I was getting what I wanted out of the service, explaining the issues and my options and costs before they did additional work. After I had picked it up they even checked on me to make sure everything was ok. I really appreciate these guys! Definitely take your car there (but not when I want to take mine haha). read more

A family member of mine went here for some work on their car because it was close to their house and their kid knew the owners son. All they needed was an oil leak repair. They ended up blowing up the motor due to a timing belt issue they created and admitted to. The owner has horrible customer service and is SO rude. He yelled at them on the phone and was very unprofessional. The vehicle had no motor problems before they brought it in. The owner refused to provide his insurance information and forced my dad into letting them put a junk yard motor in it for which they had to fight to get a warranty on it. He kept saying that their insurance would provide a subpar motor to what he was willing to provide. Which he had no way of proving. I wish my family looked at their Google and yelp reviews before ever coming here. They're not good. They got their car back and the check engine light that wasn't on when they brought it in is now on. The speakers aren't working either and they're worried it isn't reliable to drive now. Will not be returning to have any warranty work done by them as they have proved to be a dishonest and poor quality auto body company. read more

The check engine light on my 2013 Ford Flex had been on for years. I used one of those devices that give you a code and was told by another shop that it had something to do with my emissions and not to worry about it, so I didn't worry about it. Fast forward to now, the "Service AWD" light suddenly came on and since I was going to be out of town decided it was a good idea to get it checked out. We recently moved and I had not secured a local mechanic so based on word of mouth I gave Alki Auto Repair a call. They were immediately accommodating letting me know that if I was flexible I could bring my car in that day and they would try and look at in the next couple days, so I did. I told them when I needed my car back and that as long as I had it back by that date they can take as long as they needed to look at it and address the issue. They communicated in a timely fashion, were honest and straight to the point and I feel that the price was 100% reasonable! I now have a reliable mechanic right down the street from my house. Highly recommend this family owned business! Oh yea, turned out there were no issues with my AWD and my car was throwing other codes that were triggered by that original emissions related problem - which they fixed of course. They quoted me $980 + tax for a new clutch. When I went to pick it up it was actually more than $1200. They knocked it down to $1186 after I questioned the additional part and labor. I chose them because of the lower price. One of the other shops may have missed out on my business for giving me an accurate quote. Then I got stuck at a light on the way home because it wouldn't go into gear with the clutch all the way to the floor. I took it back after holding up traffic trying to get the transmission into gear. They fixed it in about 10 minutes. So at least there was that. read more

After waiting over an hour and a half, they said they didn't have the right oil filter and to bring it back anytime. When I brought it back, their car lift was broken and they told me to come back AGAIN. Brought it back a third time and they said it would be done in 10 min. 1) It took over 45 minutes and 2) it was never on the lift. Brought in my Chrysler 300 back in May for a simple oil change. They used to be close to home so it was convenient. When I went to pick up my car, I was suddenly given a laundry list of urgent major issues (like my belt snapping off while I'm driving on the freeway and making my car completely unable to control) I get it, I'm a female, and I guess it's pretty easy to take advantage of someone who has to put all her trust into someone else to diagnose the car. But I'm no idiot and I have made some simple repairs to my own car. But wait, there's also this thing called the internet and google and youtube. So... I say no to the urgent about to snap off any minute serpentine belt (several hundred dollars in repair) and the massively leaking power steering hose (really?? I think I would have seen a "massive leak". Also another huge costly repair. Instead I open up my car and take a peek inside. I take pictures and I start investigating this online. I also invite a dear friend who knows a lot about cars to take a peak. There was ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with my power steering hose and my serpentine belt. In fact, they still look brand new. I am getting around to writing this review now, because I just had my car serviced at another auto mechanic. Low and behold, on their check list, my serpentine belt is perfect and my "massively leaking" power steering fluid is still completely full! (not once have I even had to add fluid to it and my steering is just fine). Not only that but I park my car in the same spot every day and it requires a very sharp turn into it and there's not one drop of fluid on the ground. I don't trust these guys. They take advantage of women, elderly and I'm sure anyone else that they can swindle easily. I also heard a similar story from a 90 year old woman who went in for an oil change and came out with massive repairs (similar to the ones they were trying to sell me) Stay away......... BEWARE!! I had been coming to Alki Auto for the last 8 years mainly for oil changes and minor fixes. I brought my Subaru in about a month ago for an oil change and the mechanic diagnosed my car with a handful of problems, racking up a $4,000 quote!!?! I asked if the repairs were urgent and if I could fix a couple things now and do the rest in a few months. They said I shouldn't wait more than a month and to do all the repairs at once since they'd be removing the engine. I felt very weary of the $4,000 quote as I have kept up and maintained my Subaru. As per recommendation I went to Maestro Motors and received a completely different assessment. Long story short, I drove out of Maestro with a $200 repair and a lot of money saved in my pocket. I don't know if Alki is under different management as I didn't recognize the guys who were there when I stopped in a month ago but I will not be returning. read more

I saw a lot of negative reviews on here and thought my experience might shed some light on the common complaints. For 13 years I owned a Jetta (bought new) and for 10 (in Chicago and LA) it ran like a top (except for some covered factory recalls). By the time I arrived in Seattle, things started to crap out. Alki Auto was the third shop I tried within my first two years. The shop manager, Dane, always keeps his cool (the phone is always ringing and customers usually arrive at the shop in a panic because their check engine light is on). Let's face it, we only see doctors, dentists and auto shops when we're doing maintenance or something is wrong. Dane tells it like it is, even when it's news you don't want to hear. They kept my Jetta running long after I should have scrapped it. It was a turbo model with lots of problems stemming from its first six Chicago winters. The repairs were expensive (three in 3 years, totaling about $3,500). But I was hesitant to buy a new car, and the investment in the Jetta just about equaled car payments. Finally, enough was enough, so I asked them advice on which cars delivered the best performance and required the least amount of maintenance. They pointed us towards a Scion XB and a Subaru Forester. Their mechanic called a friend of his at a Toyota dealership and found a used Scion in our price range. We bought it the same day and a Subaru (second car) a year later. Both run like a charm -- and now, Alki Auto keeps us 100% on routine and preventative maintenance. Bottom line -- unlike the corporate shops and dealer shops that have to shake every customer with upsells and unnecessary maintenance, Alki Auto has the volume to be honest -- when they say you need a repair, you do. I was referred to them by a friend and have referred a dozen more friends and they all had good experiences. read more

My car was starting to show some obvious signs of a blown head gasket. We took it into Alki and told them what we thought was going on, but we were really hoping that that wasn't going to be the case. It took them a day to do some testing, and couldn't figure it out. They told us to bring the car back the next day for some more testing.... We got a call and were reluctant to hear that it wasnt the head gasket. Just needed "a new coil and spark plugs." $1500 later, after picking the car up from Alki, my car was still idling rough and still had white smoke coming out from the exhaust. The very next day, my check engine light came back on!!! My car was still showing signs of head gasket issues. We call them and tell them what's going on and they tell us to bring it in for more testing. Sure enough, it was the head gasket.... If I would have known that that was the issue, I NEVER would have had any work done to the car, I NEVER would have dropped $1500 during a time where I lost my job due to a pandemic on some labor and parts that weren't even the main issue. And I NEVER would have thought that they would screw me over without any kind of apology. As a professional, if you tell me there is an issue with my car, I feel like I want to trust you to get the problem solved. You can't just wash your hands and say, "Oops sorry, I guess there was more of a problem than we thought." You're breadcrumbing me into paying you even more money.
