A small brewery, tucked away on Temple Place, we have popped into here are number of times over the years - from just getting bites and beers, to watching presidential primary debates! It's an eclectic place, with a great ethos! "Worker Owned, Democratically Governed" is this motto, and you can feel the communal vibe as soon as you walk in! Plus who doesn't love a bit of Bay Stater Latin on the wall mural: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem!" Arriving on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at 3:30pm, we sat down, and immediately found out they were going to be closing early due to staff shortages (as is so common during these times, and not the fault of the establishment!) So we decided to make the most of the time we had, and thanks to our awesome bartender, we had a blast! We started with a flight of their beers we don't get as often: A SELTZER (A seasonal hard seltzer)! TICKLED PINK (Cranberry Sour) BIG FELLAH (Double IPA) ST. FRANCIS ALE (Dark Ale) If you have not been here, this flight would be an excellent introduction! So good! Especially the Cranberry Sour! Though, we couldn't leave without at least one pint of our favorite: WORKER'S PINT (Blonde Ale) Though this quick trip was off-the-times, and could not be helped, we still had a fantastic whirlwind of time - and we cannot wait to get back here! Democracy boasts a diverse menu that can please any preference of craft beer drinker. On top of that they have a food menu that is perfect for upscale bar eating or just something to soak up the alcohol and keep you from ending up under the table. Full disclosure, we stopped in here after wandering around on St. Patty's weekend. It was busy, crowded, and cold outside. We got in immediately and the servers were on top of their game on a busy Saturday. The first thing I noticed is that the beer list is not dominated by piney, hoppy offerings. There is a little bit of everything here and that is refreshing in a landscape dominated by New England-style, double, triple, and quad IPAs. The food is nothing that is going to win awards but is better than most bar food I've had in the Boston area. Typical fare here, the pretzels were delicious. The design of the new space is great and it is very clean. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to try craft beer in the area, and we will definitely be back to try some of their periodic experimental beers. read more

Swung by here for a casual dinner with some friends and I quite liked the vibe. There's good lighting, good service, and it's not too loud to hold conversation. The menu has all sorts of surprisingly interesting offerings for a brewery, and everyone else at my table seemed fairly pleased with their food. I wasn't a huge fan of the amount of extremely sweet sauce on my buns, but otherwise they were good. Was in town visiting and after eating decided to grab some beers. Democracy is nice in that it has a pretty central location, so if you're around the downtown area, it's not too far of a walk. Heading in on a Friday evening around 9pm, it was pretty busy, but there were a few small tables available and a decent turnover of people coming and going. They had live music with a guy playing the piano and apparently he takes requests as I soon found a group of people belting out sweet Caroline. Good job to the people singing it haha. As far as the food goes, it looked like they had pretty typical bar food and my friend ordered the wings which seemed okay. The tap list was pretty small, but then again I'm from San Diego. Unfortunately, a couple of beers were out for the day as well. I ordered a flight and they were pretty decent beers, but wish there was more selection. Had attempted to stop at a couple other pubs for happy hour, but they were way too loud. With an app, we measured the noise level in one of the bars and it was around 90dB. Seriously. I was on the verge of giving up, when we came upon Democracy Brewing. Stepped in and what a relief! Place just opened in July and it was lively, yet you could still hear one another for a conversation. We were able to grab a couple of the last seats at the bar. There were tables too for eating, but we were just looking for a drink. Bartender was friendly and the tv's were playing sports. I decided to give one of their flights a try. What a range of tastes? Appetizers to start, the potato puffs were excellent (and super hot) but the hummus was a little bland. I'd definitely have the former again and skip the latter. Beers are excellent. The "Worker's Kölsch" was tasty and refreshing. My friend who is not a beer drinker was unhappy - they do not sell any other alcoholic beverages and obviously aren't BYOB. Three of us opted for the BBBeerger, which comes with bacon and fried pickle chips. What's awesome here are the fries. In. Sane. Crisp and salty and absolutely delicious. Do not skip the fries. Great location, atmosphere and food. We got Chicken schnitzel, pizza bagels, broccoli & cheddar pie, zucchini cole slaw and beeeerger for dishes. There weren't many people as the weather was pretty shitty and it was Tuesday night. Schnitzel was good and reminded me of the ones I had in Austria. Pizza bagel was great as well. My friend being a local brew head suggested we come here so I said sure why not. Well that was a mistake. I knew they offered a decent menu w/ veg*n options but not the case anymore. There were like only a few veg*n options to choose from which I had to make vegan as well as find out about the spice level. Apparently BOTH were spicy one less so than the other according to the bartender. He had to go to the kitchen to find out & he had it wrong. When I specifically asked him about making the dish w/out peppers & spicy, he said sure. Well of course I take one bite out of the sandwich & I nearly fell off my chair. Tears were coming out of my eyes & my mouth was on fire! I couldn't believe it. Exactly what I asked for it not be, it was, that was actually ridiculous. Of course I couldn't drink water or dairy so I had to suffer by drinking a soda. I mean seriously? WTF!? How do you screw this up? Having passed by here multiple times for our Wednesday shows at the Boston Opera House (sorry Citizens Bank, you won't get me to call it anything else) I have been wanting to come but it's closing time when shows get out. The night in question though? We got in early so we could get dinner prior to showtime. My wife was at her social work placement for school, and I met her halfway after she finished for the day. The place started to fill up after we had arrived, which worked out for us! The staff were polite and friendly. The noise level was up there, but it's to be expected at any establishment in Boston, not the loudest I've been in. I was stoked to have a table with an outlet to charge my phone. The seating was comfortable, I liked the wall bench along the side, we parked at one of the tables here. Not having beef cheek before, I was game for the beef cheek pot roast. It was right portions, and oh damn was it good! There were these pockets of fat, but it had the consistency of gelatin. Or maybe it was natural gelatin, I don't know. Super tender and packed with flavor, savory and rich. The bacon cheeseburger was delicious, my wife couldn't finish it so I had the last two bites. She also shared her fries, these were tasty as well. The beers, I have to give a tip of the hat to the place; delightful, varied, and thirst quenching. They also are named after historical things and events. I wish more people knew about the 54th Regiment, I'm proud that Massachusetts had one of the first African American regiment in the US Army (Kansas was first). The regiment fought with distinction at Fort Wagner. There is a little snippet about the regiments history on the menu, and I appreciate that the brewery named a brew in honor of this regiment. The norandino was one of the best coffee beers I have ever had (recommended by the staff). I wish I took a picture of our food as well. We had the balsamic spinach salad with steak and the classic burger. Perfectly cooked and very tasty! On top of that we went for a comedy show and we're laughing all night. We went here after dinner and ordered a beer with my friend. My friend loved her Porter and I loved the More Than A Feeling, sour. We also ordered a small side of the mac and cheese because it was recommended. I was good, not great, needed extra salt and pepper and a little sriracha. The atmosphere is comfortable, they have a nice bar including some seats at the bar, not just bar stools. We sat at a high top table and it was a great atmosphere for conversation and a little privacy. They make all their beer in a house. I would recommend this place! read more

I ordered the ribs and the buffalo wings. I loved both of them. A shit ton of ribs and fries for 20$ is a great deal for me. Wings were cooked well and very flavorful. Service was great. A couple of friends and I met for a pint and some food here on hot and muggy afternoon in Boston. The place was fairly busy but the server (Michael) acknowledged us right away. When we had questions about the beers on the menu, he was very knowledgeable about the different styles and appropriate pairings with different foods. The beer was delicious and the food came out quickly. Apparently this restaurant is owned and managed by the employee and I support their business model. The interior of the building looks to have recently been refinished and has an abbey-esque feel with large tables to accommodate a variety of party sizes. We sat at the bar and both of the bartenders were very friendly, but not overly so. I got a sour that was absolutely delicious! Stopped in here for a working lunch, and let me just tell you this place is the BOMB! From the moment you walk in and look at the beautiful mural to the right, to the food, service and beer, I was already in my glory. I had a tasting flight with a few different beers, and I liked 3/4. Typically, when you go to a brewery and order a flight, it is sometimes unusual to like all of them, but this time I did. The space is huge, people are super nice, and I can't wait to go back. I stopped by here last night with a coworker for some evening drinks. We decided on Democracy Brewing because it was close to the hotel that we were staying at and is also open until 11 PM on a Monday evening. Whenever we arrived the place had a healthy dose of people inside. It wasn't enough to be even close to crowded but it certainly wasn't dead either, especially for a Monday night. As you walk in you can see a couple of tanks off to the left where they brew their beer. Then for the rest of this long restaurant the bar is off to the left with tables in the middle and half booth/half tables all the way off to the right. They have two large flat screen TVs which were both playing the Celtics game on the night that we were there. There is a brick wall behind the bar which gives it an old school feel which is completed by the chandeliers down the main part of the dining room. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I went with a flight here. At Democracy Brewing that means 4 pours for $11 and you can choose from most of the menu. For my flight I went with the Cellar Door (English bitter), Consummate Rioter (IPA), roadrunner (raspberry sour) and 2nd place Mayor (IPA). The first beer that I tried was the Cellar Door which was good as it had a slight sweetness to it before finishing with a nice bitter note. Up second was the roadrunner which started very raspberry forward before heading into a huge sourness and finishing with a nice light raspberry flavor. Third was the Consummate Rioter which was lighter in color and ABV (7.2% vs 8%) than the 2nd place mayor. It was light at first before a big burst of hops and finishing with a nice citrus flavor. Last up was the 2nd place mayor which was definitely a more hop forward IPA than the Rioter. It started out big and hoppy from the start right through to the finish. Out of the bunch I think that the Consummate Rioter was my favorite closely followed by the Cellar Door. All of the beers here were good beers though and each brought it's own uniqueness and flavor. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I liked that Democracy Brewing had a good selection of beers and that they tasted good too. read more

My husband and I are spoiled in California with breweries on every block. We had to treasure hunt for this place in downtown Boston and indeed it was a great find. We had a cheerful brewtender that interacted with us most of the evening. We ordered two flights (4 tastings per flight) as there are only 8 crafted beers it was perfect to share between the two of us. I love sours and lighter brews so the Cherry is delightful with a delicate sour taste but full cherry on the tongue. The Riot is exactly like it sounds, sour makes a statement in the mouth but perfectly balanced. Workers was a little on the hoppy side for me, but I definitely enjoyed the dancing notes that linger on your tastebuds. The 1919 was probably my favorite Stout, I'm noticing it's an acquired taste I've come to thoroughly enjoy. The inside has a very modern-rustic edge going on (totally love it), atmosphere is relaxing with the dim lighting and the fun crowds made it very comfortable.
