Came to Democracy Brewing for a drag show in the back room. It's a neat lil spot! I love that the big dramatic doors can close & create a private-feeling environment. The rest of the brewery just melts away. There's a satellite bar in the back room, too. That blue raspberry seltzer is really electric. Unfortunately, the night I was there, the kitchen randomly closed kinda early. I hadn't eaten anything & had come from Providence, so I was starving. Democracy Brewing is conveniently located along the Freedom Trail (near Granary cemetery where John Hancock, Sam Adams, and Paul Revere are buried) The facility itself is long and rather narrow, moderate amount of seating and a long bar to drink at. I'm a basic girl when it comes to beer and I believe you can tell a lot about a brewer by testing the most basic of brews- a simple lager. Democracy did not disappoint on that front! Service was fast and friendly, the beer was crisp, clean, and tasty. I did find the setting itself a little spartan, but this is a personal aesthetic thing- I was itching to grab a paintbrush and some wall hangings to be honest. Would I go back again? Walking around Boston one very cold evening, I came across Democracy Brewing. Empty. No one present. Not a soul. Just two ladies near the front door waiting to seat you. Where I would typically be taken aback, I was more shocked that they were still open with the whole city seemingly shut down because of the cold and piles of snow. I was welcomed warmly and when asked if I could make an order to go warmed even further as they smiled and happily took my order. I asked for no ketchup with my order to which one of the ladies immediately paused, and asked for any other food restrictions that I might have. She explained all that was included in the meal that could potentially irritate my restrictions. She told me it would be about twenty-minutes, so I took the opportunity to run down the street to the grocery store for some post-meal goodies. When I returned she greeted me quickly at the door and asked if a specific ingredient was included in my restrictions - I responded that it was and her smile spread far across her face in a matter of relief. She replied - oh good, I thought so, I had the cook make a second burger without it just in case. Are you kidding me?! So yes, the food, way better than expected for a brewery, but the service? Was staying in Back Bay and looking for a neighborhood brewery. Democracy brewing popped up so I wandered over. The taproom was larger than I expected. I ordered a flight, two of their hazy IPAs, a lager and their key lime pie sour. All the beers were really good but I especially liked the hazy IPAs. Staff was friendly and service was quick. I've been here a few times and am always impressed by their menu and food! I can't speak to the beer but the seltzer cocktails are good - the Blueberry Bestie is my favorite. Came here for dinner around 5 on a Friday before seeing The Nutcracker at the Boston Opera House and it was pretty empty, food was decent. Vibe: Good sized bar, one large table in the middle but lots of smaller tables around, event space. Bathrooms downstairs were pretty grungy. Service: Very good, our server was super attentive. Drinks: They have beer, seltzer, and mocktails. I tried a mocktail and it was way over the top sweet, otherwise the flavor was alright. Food: Bao buns - tasty filling, buns cracked and a little dry in spots Fish taco - very good Mac n' cheese - sauce was a bit watery but it was DELICIOUS Accessibility - Like 10 feet away from Downtown Crossing and close to Park St. stops. Lots of walking throughout the city left us a bit tired and thirsty and we happened upon Democracy Brewing! It was a little after lunch time, so the place wasn't too busy. Grabbed a couple spots at the bar and chatted up the friendly bartender. I went with a sampler, which also allows you to select an in-house seltzer, which I did of course. All the drinks were good. The smoked beer was very interesting and not something I could drink a lot of; it's like liquid smoked pork! Nice spot to rest our feet and quench our thirst. read more

We stopped at democracy for dinner and a drink before a show. The restaurant is very clean, welcoming, and spacious. A couple of the beers were out, so alternatives were suggested. They also have seltzer cocktails for people who don't like beer. The food was honestly better than expected. My husband and I really enjoyed the wings. We got the chef sauce on it, and it came with a homemade ranch dressing. I would try that again. Mac and cheese was very filling and tasty. Chicken kebab tasted fresh and fries well done. Churros also were very tasty (pictured after we had two). Our server was excellent. Very attentive and bubbly. The only downside here was the male server working with the table next to us left a sour taste in my mouth. A couple, clear English second language, came in confused about seating and were directed to a table. The woman asked about stouts, the server just said "we don't have stouts" then walked away. Her partner tried to talk to a bartender about the beers and the server came back over asking what they were doing. She explained that she wanted someone to offer an alternative, he again said "we don't have a stout". She asked what they have he would suggest... he suggested a mocha stout. The beer here is pretty good, the food is not the best. I got the fried fish tacos, they had corn on them, and there was way too much corn. I also got fries, which was good. Overall wouldn't get food here. The service was okay, overall difficult to know when they would come back around after we ordered food. read more

We came here for lunch before seeing Funny Girl at the Opera House. We have dined here before so knew we would be satisfied. The staff is super friendly and offer great recommendations. It is an interesting space that got louder and as it became more crowded. The menu has changed a bit and offers international fare, which I was honestly a bit dubious about trying. I am glad we tried the newer dishes, however. The Butter Chicken was tender and flavorful. I would have preferred it with rice rather than nan, but it made a satisfactory lunch. The Spätzle Mac n Cheese was delicious if a bit hot seasoning-wise. There should be a note on the menu as it was almost too hot for my daughter. The Arepa Peluga was good but our third favorite of the three. Note, the restrooms are in the basement. read more

Had a nice and quick evening at Democracy before a show! Democracy is located perfectly near the Broadway plaza area and it was great. We came in and were seated right away at a cute booth. The menu online did not match the menu in store which was sad. I'm a bit of a picky beer drinker but we came in specifically for a Passionfruit sour on their menu, that they did not have on the updated menu. We both ended up getting the Blood Orange Seltzer and I got the cranberry. The blood orange was good and the cranberry was just alright. I would not say this was like a normal seltzer we are used to. No carbonation and way more of a beer taste. We did drink half of the beers though! (A drink is a drink, right?) Our server was quick and to the point, not very social and friendly but he was precise and fast. We ordered a side of fries and buffalo cauliflower. Both were delicious! This is a great spot to grab a drink while meeting up with someone or a group of friends while in downtown Boston. During the summer, they have a few tables available for outdoor seating. The staff are kind and welcoming, which includes the servers, hosts, and bartenders. They have a multitude of beers available, as well as a seltzer. I ordered a flight comprised of four different drinks available at the time (they tend to switch up the menu fairly often!): Pura Vida (sour wheat ale), Bicycle Race (grapefruit shandy), Fighting 54th (farmhouse ale - saison), and A Seltzer (peach). I'm not too much of a beer drinker, so the flight felt like the best option for me. While I am normally a seltzer lover, it was not my favorite. Thinking about it, I think it is because it too carbonated. Out of the beers, the Pura Vida was my favorite. I enjoy sours and it had a great flavor. Since I was meeting a friend for drinks, we did not order food, but I was intrigued by the menu. Will have to check it out sometime. read more

The beers rotate and while I love all their sours most (currently there's a dragon fruit one) the others are also very good. And you can't go wrong with a flight. For food here's my off the dome rundown. They do taco specials sometimes that always change and are 2/$10. They are delicious and if you see the little flyer you HAVE to try. The Mac and cheese is also very good. The mussels and clams were to DIE for. The bao isn't my favorite but that was because it had a lot of hipstery micro greens do just not for me but still tasted good! The bags of popcorn hit the spot just right if you only want q snack The bartenders are all super friendly and so lovely. And the music taste that is always playing (think 2008 punk rock) is perfect. read more

The charcuterie board was HUGE and the perfect accompaniment to our samplers of beer! The rest of the food was equally delicious. Highly recommend the smoked wings as they are moist and have that touch of smoke that made everyone at the table want one! The cauliflower IS SPICY, so have your cold beer in hand when eating. Service was prompt and we were checked on several times throughout the meal to ensure everything was good and any additional drinks etc. Beautiful pub seating family style with high ceilings that make it feel open, yet intimate for a family gathering. We had so much fun that I didn't remember to take more photos of the room. Definitely recommend! Be aware though that they can't do separate checks, but they can split the bill evenly across credit cards. But that was the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars. read more

A really solid option in DTX! Their set up lends itself really well to large groups, and they have additional space in the back which is a little more removed and quieter. We've always been able to walk in with a pretty big party no problem (but that's usually before rush hour). Service is fast and friendly, but the food is kind of hit or miss. Don't bother with the popcorn or other small snacks, but DEFINITELY go for the sweet chili bao buns! They have a good variety of beers (and other drinks!) to choose from, including a few mocktails for the non-drinkers. The vibes are great and you don't feel rushed at all. Highly recommend giving this place a shot if you're in the area! read more

This is one of the few Boston breweries I hadn't tried yet, and I'm excited that I can finally cross it off of my list! I'm not sure it beats some of my other favorite great craft beer spots in the area, but there are definitely some good options on the menu. I was also pleasantly surprised by how good the food was, and it's just an all around fun spot to grab a drink. Both of their hazy NE IPAs (Tiny Days and Rabble Rouser) were really good, though they tasted almost identical. Rabble Rouser is a collab with Somerville's Remnant Brewing, which is one of my favorite spots, so I loved seeing that on the menu. I also tried the Bicycle Race grapefruit pale ale, which was a bit underwhelming but not bad. They were sold out of their Hidalgo sour, but I've heard good things, so I'll definitely be back to try it soon. Some of our favorites from the food menu included: Beer Steemed Mussels, House Smoked Wings, Spicy Fried Cauliflower, and Birria Quesitacos. We sampled a lot with a big group and the only thing I wouldn't recommend is the Flatbread, it was just a little boring compared to everything else. My only complaint from the experience: I visited in the evening on a Thursday, and luckily a few people got there early to snag a table--it was absolutely packed with the after work crowd from all the offices nearby. We sat near the back, and there was a private party spilling out of the private room next to us, which put a bit of a damper on things. The area was so over crowded and people were surrounding our table so closely that people on the end of the table were feeling pretty claustrophobic. All in all, it's a really cool spot, and the bar is massive, so it's a nice spot for a drink and a bite. Just make sure you're ready to brave the weekday crowds :) I'll definitely visit again when I'm downtown. read more

We came in here before seeing Moulin Rouge around the corner and we're so glad we did! Neither of us had been here before and we had time to kill before the show and took a whim and just walked in not knowing really anything about it here. We immediately got seated and our server was super nice and attentive to us. The inside is really interesting. The decor sort've reminds me of medieval times or something? But in the coolest way possible. There's large communal-type tables in the middle, in addition to the bar seats and high tops along the edge. We were seated at one of the two person high top tables along the edge and it was great. We only came here for drinks so I can't attest for the food but the drink menu mainly has IPAs and sours so as someone who doesn't personally drink either, I ordered the hard seltzer which came in a tall glass. I think it would've been better had it been served in a can and it had a unique tart taste to it. read more
