I'll make this short. Lovely back yard setting, very nice & friendly service. Food was excellent, presentation was great. Well made drinks. We were 6 people, bill was around 380..with the tax, tip & recommended 4% for the kitchen staff, another 80 in fees, which kills me after traveling through Europe fairly often. So 440 total. Way to much for one drink each for 5 of us, no drink for the 6th, no bottle of wine, split 1 app 7 olives, no coffee, 2 desserts. Way too pricey. When did 34-38 dollar entrees become the norm ? I would never return for one reason..that 4% tip for the kitchen. Pay your back of the house staff from those $$$$ entrees. Perhaps another idea is to take a % off each $15+ cocktail and pay their kitchen staff with it. I have not seen this done in years..absolutely no where. During the height of Covid, yes. But it faded away rather quickly and left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Also, I'd recommend lighter plates, those poor ladies hauling in those large & heavy dishes is not a good look. read more

Last night, we decided to dine at Farmhouse in Needham before the Great Hall Concert. When we walked in, we were impressed by the pleasant atmosphere, and throughout the evening we found the service to be very good. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the setting or the prices. We started with the $34 charcuterie board. For that price, we were surprised by how little meat was included, along with only a few measly crackers. We ordered additional bread because there simply wasn't enough to accompany the charcuterie--and were then surprised to find a $4 charge for bread and butter. The wine by the glass was also extremely expensive. My wife ordered the chicken Milanese. The salad and sauce served with it were quite good, but unfortunately the chicken cutlet itself was very dry. For dessert, we decided to try the butterscotch pudding. It could not have been more uneventful. The pudding had virtually no discernible butterscotch flavor--or much flavor at all--and what appeared to be canned whipped cream did nothing to improve it. Top spot in Needham. Great food. Ambiance is classy but comfortable. Great prices. But I'm taking away one whole point for the unreadable menu. The patrons are 40+ and the wavy, narrow, spotty font was completely unreadable. I thought it was just me, but the waiter said they've heard it before. Overall, the food was good and I'll probably return, but there were definitely issues. First, either they were down a server and forgot to assign our table to another server, or they give their servers more tables than they could handle because we had different servers throughout the meal, would disappear for 20 minutes at a time, and it took forever to place our order, get our food, have our dishes cleared, and get our check. Other tables seem to be wondering where their food was, too, so I think it could have been a problem with the kitchen. You have to pay for bread service, I don't love that, but we got it, and the bread wasn't great. If you're not going to serve amazing bread and butter, do not charge for it. As I said, the food was good, frisée salad was delicious (just the perfect amount of bitterness you want from frisée), risotto was good, but the shrimp was just added, not made as part of it so didn't mesh completely, drinks were very tasty. Enjoyed the look and feel of the space, good noise level, not too loud or too hushed. We were at a table in front of the kitchen and it was very warm on an already warm summer night. We try this place about once a year because it's convenient. It never fails to disappoint. The Caesar salad with chicken was IKEA-style: They bring you a head of lettuce unchopped, with a pile of chicken chunks on the side. The music is always too loud and inappropriate for the first seating, when the old and hard of hearing are the main customers. I was having acid flashbacks listening to Jimi Hendrix and Cream. I've given up complaining over the years as the help routinely ignores requests to turn it down, but one couple--perhaps first-timers--walked in, asked them to turn it down before they were seated. They asked a second time when they were about to order and the waitress said "We already did." They got up and left and I had to admire them for doing so. read more

First rate upscale Yankee food in Needham Mass. I would call it haute cuisine - except nowadays you have neomodernists doing combinations with molecular tricks and obscure ingredients. You will recognize everything that goes on your plate at the Farmhouse. They are still on the basic Yankee formula of a main dish protein cooked simply and well surrounded by garnishes that are more elaborate. It is a fine fine formula and they execute extremely well. * * * My center of the plate protein was Scallops. Scallops to die for. Some of that is just New England has wonderful scallops. However the cook brought everything out of those scallops you could ask for. It was surrounded by three different kinds of wonderful vegetables and a pointless purple cauliflower puree. Well, the puree looked pretty anyway. The shiitake mushrooms, spinach and real cauliflower more than made up for the purple paste. Everything - from the scallops to the veggies - was dressed with beurre blanc. Beurre blanc is wonderful. Beurre blanc is happiness. Beurre blanc says the cook loves you. A little parsley oil added freshness to the proceedings. I was flying around the moon - which was a good thing to fly around that night. * * * The bar program is first rate. Most people were ordering mixed drinks. I have no doubt the mixed drinks were wonderful. But I want with a Junipero English style Gin. Enough juniper taste to command one's attention. Strong enough to put up a fight. (Compare with the expensive water otherwise known as Tanqueray.) Smooth enough to make that fight delightful. Straight gin does not usually go with haute cuisine. But if we are talking a strong resonant juniper drink ... Well juniper is a flavor. Ask anyone who makes choucroute. * * * One salad later (Salads are salads in upscale places.) It was apple crisp time. Ok ... the Farmhouse is in New England. They have better apples than I get in Texas. The cook did not ruin them. Yes, the crisp had elaborate crumbles and vanilla ice cream etc etc. It was all wonderful. The little kid in me turned off the food analysis box And dug in like it was homemade chocolate pudding. I was a happy little kid. * * * One last note about this wonderful place. If you can ... try to sit in the front in a seat facing the Western Wall. They have a blurred neofauve triptych of New England Cape Cod scenery. That triple painting is to die for. If I had a zillion bucks and a ton of wall space, I would want that triptych in my house. But you can look at it if you eat at the Farmhouse. The painting easily attains the same high level as the food. * * * The Boston area has a ton of expensive fine restaurants. The Boston area also has a ton of expensive not-so-fine restaurants. Sometimes you are just paying money for the right to pay money. The Farmhouse is the real deal. I would eat here regularly happily. My accountant would have conniption fits - and he would be right. But if you paced the runs on your bank account to keep them within the range of sustainability ... This is a wonderful way to spend all that money. read more

I was impressed by what they put out from that little space! The entrees were hard to choose from because the options all sounded amazing. I got the roasted chicken and it was fantastic. Service was good. We had a great server who was upbeat and positive. However, the food was decent at best. The portions are way too small for the prices. The Halibut portion sizing was abysmal for the price ($38). The size was approximately 6-8oz. The highlight would probably be the truffle fries ($12). The shrimp tacos had good sized shrimps, but I would not consider them good considering each taco had 3 tiger shrimp each with a lackluster tortilla. The tortillas didn't seem hand made either nor were they warm. I would not pay ($29) for these "tacos". The shrimp was good as you can taste the meatiness. However, spices and flavors didn't come through as the spicy aioli was primarily mayo. Overpriced, would not recommend. There are better options. read more

Came here on a Friday night, I recommend making a reservation and park in the back. If not you will have to look for street parking. The ambience was nice, they really max out on tables, it can get a wee bit tight if you are very tall. The hostess is set up by the bar so walk up to them otherwise you will be standing awkwardly in the front of the restaurant. The service was very attentive and accommodating to the groups food allergies. They have the QR menus, if you have a hard time reading, this menu might take you a bit. The font is weird and in a dimly lit restaurant it makes it even more challenging. The food was pretty solid. Out of the appetizers I would revisit the calamari and the salad that came with the crab cake. The calamari was delicious, it was more than just fried squid. You could taste the pickled peppers mixed and the dipping sauce was very nice, different from your standard marinara. The crab cake was forgettable but the salad was awesome! I hate salads with a passion, but the dressing was top notch. The tuna tartare was good but I think was missing a dressing. There was a sauce sprinkled but not enough to notice and elevate the dish. It was very well presented. The fried pickles were good, I don't care for fried pickles but everyone else enjoyed them. Onto the entrée's, the group all got the halibut while I got the free bird chicken. Wifey got jealous because the bird was the bomb. The gravy was rich but not too heavy and it still looked like a refined dish. The halibut was ok, nothing amazing but was told it was really good the last time a member of the group last dined. This seems like a good date night if you have a sitter, but for sure make a reservation or you may need to go next store and have a pizza instead. I'd come here again but probably in 6 or 7 months as it seems they rotate their menu based on past Dishes on Yelp that are no longer on the menu. read more

Went here on a Thursday night and it was bumping! Clearly a popular spot and I see why, it's tasty and has a great menu, just not a literally great menu. As in, they don't actually give you a paper menu. This would be fine, I am capable of using my phone to view a menu, but as a graphic designer I was thoroughly bewildered by the poor design of their digital menu. Holy pancakes Batman, that is hard to read! All caps, handwritten style, condensed font with lines that don't fit across the screen (and isn't responsive design so it doesn't line break for you), Oy, what a mess. Please Farmhouse, hire a designer to fix this for you, or at least switch to a more functional typeface. OK, with that out of the way, on to the good stuff. The Kale salad (like a shredded salad) and beet salad were yum, the burrata was a bit disappointing, maybe because it was too cold, it just didn't have the usual creamy goodness and I guess it's no longer peach season, so maybe that didn't help. Most folks got the fish tacos which they loved, I got the short ribs which hit all the right notes and melted apart in a lovely way. The space is small, so it gets filled quickly, they have a great outdoor space in the back lot when the weather is good. The waitstaff was great and parking is easy in the lot out back. read more

Several years ago this was my favorite restaurant. After my experience last night, my mind has changed! First time back in a while... the menu looked less creative and inspired, but it tasted even more so. Fried pickles were limp, Halibut was good but really bland, profiteroles were stale and had way too much ice cream. The cocktails were excellent. The worst part of the evening was being constantly harassed by our server, telling us we only have 90 minutes at the table. He came over to apologize after he dropped the check, but his apology included accusing is of "starting an hour late". I told him we were on time for our reservation, and he said yes but we took too long to order our entrees! So if you want to enjoy a cocktail and conversation before digging into your entree, go elsewhere. There are many great options in a walkable distance! read more

Perfect place to grab a nice dinner during the summer in their outdoor seating area. Their menu covered various tastes and the food was excellent. I don't drink but my friends alcoholic drinks looked amazing and they made me a raspberry-lime Rickey that was so tasty! A little pricey; I had an entree and side salad with no alcohol and it was 70$ with tip. The tables outside felt small for 4 of us to sit there comfortably. We currently live in Italy. We live near Lake Como in Lombardy. I use that as a useful frame of reference. In Italy, food is regional. Each region has their specialties and perfect them. That makes the food so good. Deep rooted tradition. The meal at the Farmhouse feels like the opposite. It's a menu composed of random dishes. The quality was not very good and way too expensive. I had the Milanese chicken which was $30, and should be around $10. The service was spotty. They have a model where there are food runners, bussers, and a server. It felt quite impersonal. We had to ask for a second drink and for salt. The bottom line: it's just way too expensive for what you get. read more

A true disappointment. Our reservation was given away.Once were seated one of us received a drink not made properly. But took so long to arrive she drank it anyway. We wanted to order appetizers first and were told we have to order meals and apps at the same time. We got the arroncini. They were glorified fried mozzarella balls. Not a grain of rice inside. One of us got the duck. It was chewy and overcooked. Sent it back. Got the chicken Milanese. Which was delicious. 2 of us got the haddock which they thought was over cooked. The Farmhouse in Needham is a fantastic restaurant serving classic American cuisine in a rustic, quaint, and friendly atmosphere. Making a reservation on line was easy and convenient. I was very pleased when we arrived promptly at 7:30PM that we were greeted and immediately brought to our reserved table. I can't tell you how disappointing it can be when you arrive on time only to be told to wait in the bar or in the lobby, but the Farmhouse had our table (by the window) ready even with the restaurant essentially at capacity; including the bar area. Thank you Farmhouse for taking the reservation process seriously. After ordering drinks, we chose the avocado toast which was prepared with yellow and red tomatoes as well as the beat salad. Both were delicious and freshly made. For dinner we ordered the vegetarian risotto with the special request to not include mushrooms; which was not a problem at all. I also ordered the halibut which was recommended over the fish tacos. What a great selection! The piece was large, extremely fresh, and full of flavor. What a fantastic dish! Our waitress was very friendly and extremely helpful not only explaining menu items, but assisting in choosing between a couple of options. We we both very pleased with the experience. Dessert was special as this was a birthday celebration surprise. She ordered the brownie which came out with a candle and frosting writing of Happy Birthday yet avoided the embarrassing singing and attention. I had the butterscotch pudding due to the inclusion of pieces of toffee; served chilled it was still very rich and yummy. Well done and again thank you Farmhouse! Overall, this was a fantastic experience from the attention to detail in the reservation process to the staff and of course the food; appetizers, main dishes, and dessert. Had a great date night at The Farmhouse! Started off with a reservation snag but the staff was very accommodating and seated us right away. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Loved the laid back ambiance and music choices. We started with the Avocado toast which was extremely delicious, ingredients were fresh and the yellow tomato was the perfect accompaniment. For the main course I had the short ribs and my husband had the scallops. Both were delicious but I think the scallops were the better pick. We finished up with the brownie, which was very large and paired well with the ice cream and strawberry garnish. Very impressed with the freshness and presentation of the dishes and will definitely come back again. read more
