Deer Garden is my go-to for catering for my family parties. Fanny is always so good about having everything ready at the time I need to pick up. My cousins' wives always compliment my choices, and I just tell them that it's all my favourite things that I get to share. I order (multiple orders of): - curry beef brisket - sweet and sour pork - eggplant with tofu and egg - pan fried beef noodles - honey garlic boneless pork chops - gai lan - yau choy - congee with preserved duck egg and shredded pork - Chinese donuts (factor two orders per portion of congee) - baked seafood in cream sauce on rice Then I just make rice and frozen veggies and desserts. The system works well and everyone is super happy. We probably don't need to order as much as we do, but we love leftovers and the kids have different food for lunch and dinner in the days following. read more

Located inside Henderson Place Mall, the decor is minimalistic and food is not bad for this area. The portions are big and the servers are friendly. The restaurant is freezing cold, so you may want to chose a table in front of the portable heater. We mostly ordered seafood dishes and I really liked the fried garlic prawns. The prawns were so crispy I ate the shell as well and it came with a ton of garlic and jalapenos. I liked the steamed halibut, it was fresh and paired well with rice. We also ordered lobster with cream sauce over yee mein. It was not bad, but they charge an extra $5 for cream sauce. Curry beef brisket on rice: we ordered this to go and it was packed in the smallest container I've ever seen. It seems like the portions are bigger if you dine in. Have been living in the area for awhile, never occurred trying this place out..... Maybe our instincts were right. This joint looks like they are really hard up, in difficult times. The food is okay, edible. Had the curry beef brisket rice combo and the baked pork chop rice. The taste is familiar to typical HK cafe style. Taste wise they are average, size is typical size with abundance of rice as filler. The combos came with HK milk tea which taste authentic. Service, or what service? Couple of waitresses barking at you and never revisiting once the food is thrown on to the corner of the table. Other than that, we didn't get beat up, considering they acted like tough gangsters. Value, or what value? Prices are on the ok side considering "all" that they are giving you "free", but no seriously. Worth a try. read more

In coquitlam there aren't a whole lot of hk cafe restaurants to choose from which makes Deer Garden an easy choice to grab a quick meal when you crave some hk cafe dishes! We ordered the Noodle with Pork and Vegetables in Soup and the Curry Beef Brisket with rice combo. The noodle soup took a lot longer to prepare as I think it was made fresh while the curry was pre-made and was served warm. It would have been better if the temperature was hotter and both dishes were served together as my husband was all done by the time my fish arrived! Overall the restaurant is very clean and spacious and they even take down your name and number to trace customers who are in, which gives customers a peace of mind around this time. read more

A no frills Hong Kong cafe (chachanteng) style food offering personal sized lunch combos with choice of HK milk tea or coffee, or the full entre sized dishes encompassing everything from the classics like HK curry beef brisket with rice to Baked pork cutlet in tomato sauce with fried rice base. Of the food I sampled (listed above), the flavours are authentic Hong Kong but the price tags are about $2-3 dollars over priced per dishes. Value-wise, for $16 you can get a whole bowl of top notch juicy, soft and fatty curry beef brisket at the Chinatown BBQ (a GVRD's top 3 Chinese BBQ restaurant) where here for $14 you get 4 pieces.... that's less than 50% of value against a comparable restaurant (let alone Chinatown BbQ has nice decor and super friendly service staff). Other than the poor value, food wise dishes lack luster probably due to low fat content. Most baked pork cutlet rice would feature a healthy crust of real cheese with oil oozing out the casserole but at Deer Garden you get half a teaspoon of fake Parmesan cheese making a symbolic gesture to the dish. The fried pork cutlet was done very well-soft and juicy inside, consistent thickness, and tasty. Service is nothing to speak of as the whole place is ran by couple of elderly ladies who are too inundated with mopping the floor, busting tables, handling cash, making milk tea and also bring food to customers (I don't see them washing hands in between these activities). Overall Deer Garden gives the impression that the cook really knows how to cook HK dishes well but is somewhat constraint by budget and is forced to scale down on portion size and the details that could have made this an excellent venue. I would be happy to pay the dim ticket price if either the quantity/portion or the quality improves. It is hard to suffer a food experience when I could not find quality , quantity or service. If you are in for over-prized HK cafe-style food experience while feeling good in paying to get a beating, this place will do wonders. read more

This was my first visit to one of the few Deer Garden restaurants. Went with some friends because it was a cold day and noodles sounded great! As we entered, we were never greeted by any of the staff. Which is fine, because as long as we get seated and get handed menus, I can't really complain. We sat down and ordered by ticking off what we wanted for our noodles. You get to tick off the types of noodles you wanted, the broth, additional toppings, as well as side dishes for an extra fixed charge. We gestured to get the attention of one of the waiters who walked by and she said nothing. Okay, no probs. Our food was then being served by someone else. Again, no words, no "hello." My friend asked for scissors to cut something up and the waiter walks by and away, no words spoken, and comes back, placing the scissors on the table...no words again. The food was pretty good. The price is not too expensive. Just shy of $12, if you order the noodles without a side dish. It's fun if you like to mix and match or try different types of combinations for each visit. I would recommend this location. The staff are REALLY quiet though. It's like sitting in a ghost town if you have no one to talk to. It's probably the first time where I have been in a restaurant where there was an exchange of less than 5 words, if any at all. read more

One of my staple restaurants when I go back home to coquitlam. In my opinion, the original Deer Garden serves better food than the Deer Garden Signatures that popped up over the past couple years. The Hainan Chicken Rice is a must have when you come to this place. It makes the rice to aromatic and delicious, I could just eat it by itself and be satisfied. The Hainan Cold Chopped Chicken was very tender, my favorite pairing is to eat it with the Ginger Garlic sauce provided on the side. We also got the Chili Boiled Fish, which was also delicious and had gigantic portions, and the Gam Bian green beans which is pretty classic. We split the 3 entree combo amongst me and my mom, which was way too much food. I would say that it's enough food for a party of 4. Overall I would definitely recommended everyone who wants authentic Chinese dishes to come give Deer Garden a try. read more

Came here for lunch with the family. They have the lunch menu but the prices were high, ranging from $13 - $15. Even though it comes with drinks, I feel it is quite steep for lunch. On top of that, if you order a cold drink, it's an additional $1.50. Glad to see that when the food arrived, the portions were quite large. Even though it's supposed to be a one person meal, we ended up sharing, thereby trying more variety. Also glad to taste that all the dishes have good flavors and were cooked perfectly. Some of the dishes we had were the beef curry (can't go wrong here), fish with creamed corn, eggplant with minced pork and salted fish, char koey teow (rice noodles dish). We ordered the deep fried squid, Fish and chicken fried rice, house special chow mein and the pineapple chicken. My favourite was the deep fried squid, which is the best I've ever had! Crispy but soft on the inside. I found the pineapple chicken dish had too much ginger for my liking. I took 2 stars away for the customer service- We asked out server about recommendations between two dishes, she said "well, what do you want pineapple or no pineapple?" She seemed annoyed. Also, she yelled at my dad who sat up and almost got in her way as she was carrying dishes, not intentionally of course. Nice service and decent attitude since I come to the old location a lot and still continue to go at this new location so some waitresses know my family. Sometimes can seem a bit rushed and rough but that's just the style. Good food and lots of options, some different options for drinks too. I like their ice tea but it's quite sweet for me so I don't get it often. Like their beef and rice dishes. Nice dim sum dishes too. Pretty clean and organized restaurant and lots of parking spaces. Came to this restaurant with my wife and in-laws for dinner. Right off the bat we felt un-welcomed. There was no host/hostess to take names to wait for seating. We stood at the entrance for 10mins waiting until a waitress abruptly told my father-in-law "Write your name" while pointing to a wrinkly, brittle, white piece of paper. We sat down ordered; we decided to get the sweet and sour pork, white rice, and the seafood chow mein. The first dish to come out was the sweet and sour pork, then the chow mein. We started eating and realized they had forgotten our rice. Getting a waitress' attention here was an ordeal. They pay no attention to the customers around. At times it seemed as though they were looking past us instead of at us. We had to ask 3 different waitresses about our rice before we received it. The food was actually decent. Nothing really sets it apart from any other Chinese restaurant. If you're hungry and into run of the mill Chinese food this is the place for you. Overall the food was tasty, and filled us up. That location has been turned into Deer Garden Signatures which specializes in noodles and HK cafe food (similar to the Richmond location). The full Deer Garden restaurant is now located in Henderson Mall (confused yet?). This location serves more full-size and family-style dishes, similar to the old location. Ii was a bit disappointed after a simple dinner with friends. This is used to be in Westwood and then closed down for Deer Garden Signature serving the noodle soup and other traditional Chinese food. Personally I think the quality of food is down and not as good as in the past. We ordered some chef signature dishes - sweet and sour pork, Haina chicken and beef with Chinese broccoli. They used to be great and must order. Now they just tasted differently. I think the Lougheed Wonton House is way better than this. read more

Family run, this restaurant is a great spot for Hong Kong style staples such as curry beef brisket with rice. We had dinner usually at around 6 pm and a few months ago we went to the Deer Garden Restaurant. The long and short of it was they used too much MSG and the second dish arrived half an hour after the first one. And it was not that busy. 6 pm! Today, the first day of the Chinese New Year, we went there again hoping to have a better experience. We had the egg plant and prawns and it was good despite the heavy use of MSG. Plenty of egg plants and 8 prawns. come to $19. Then 20 minutes past and the second dish still had not arrived yet. So we checked with them to see if the ship had arrived with their rice and they reassured us that it will be a few more minutes. Wouldn't you know it, 15 minutes past and no food, we were so upset, we up and paid for the prawns and left. Your fate is really, literally in their hands. The dishes here are huge, actually it is too big portion, can't finish. Taste is above average, especially the Sweet and Sour Pork, very very good, crispy and tasteful.
