It's a very genuine HK style cafe. Every dish reminds me of how HK cafe really tastes like. Large portions. Shared parking lot or street. Steak - really well done and savory. Had the black pepper sauce which was nice Lobster soup - very hearty with lots of ingredients and creamy Baked pork chop rice - my go to dish to see if a restaurant is good and they did knock it out of the park. HK style tea cafe in a plaza on Alexandra Rd. They mostly serve HK style western food combos, so plates of steak, chops etc. Some of them comes with your choice of drink, starch and/or dessert. Was pretty busy on a holiday. We got a couple of different things. Their signature "Cajun" chicken thigh was probably the best out of the bunch. It's "Cajun" because they used some chili powder, but definitely milder than actual Cajun flavors. I liked that the skin is crisp, and the insides are juicy. We also had beef shortribs with dark sauce and it was decent. Also one of us ordered steak which was a small piece of strip steak, and that was alright. This is a very clean Hong Kong-style restaurant with an expansive menu. Their lunch special options are reasonably priced and of very good quality. The ribeye that I ordered was tender and beefy. Even the spaghetti that came with the steak was well seasoned! My friend recommended this place to me and I have recommended it to others in turns! read more

Four stars granted for the delicious dessert time enjoyed at Amigo restaurant with my amigo :) We ordered the Cantonese style French toast 法蘭西多士 and the fresh fruit crepe. Awesome dessert combo of sweet chocolate rich flavors with lighter fruity tasting pastry item. Since we were already in Richmond, thought it would be easy to find places with Cantonese style French toast dessert. But we soon discovered many Cantonese cafe are closed by 6pm or 9pm on week nights. Luckily, Internet search led us to Amigo, with posted closing time at 11pm. Parking in Richmond is usually very convenient and this place is located in a plaza with plenty of free spots. We arrived around 930pm and servers welcomed us, saying we are fine as last call is around 1030pm. Friendly service always adds an extra star in my books of reviews. And yes, Amigo totally satisfied the French toast cravings. Loved their chocolate lava style filling inside the French toast, loved the French Toast texture, loved the sprinkled cocoa presentation and love our dessert pairing with fresh fruits crepe. Happy ending indeed~! I like their clean layout and warm ambiance. This place offers the usual diverse menu of an HK cafe with many Chinese dish options of seafood, rice and noodles so I hope to be back for real foods next time! read more

I came here for lunch recently. In terms of food, I tried their Blackened Chicken Meal. The meal came with a drink, soup, and dessert. The iced milk tea, lobster cream soup, banana crepe, and the blackened chicken were all pretty good.The iced milk tea and crepe were not overly sweet, the soup was comforting and had nice flavour, and the blackened chicken was crispy with enough flavour. read more

We started off with the chicken curry ($15.50). It came with a large side of rice but we decided to mix the two together so that the curry sauce could soak into the rice. The curry was mild and filled with potatoes, chicken, and onion. We enjoyed the coconut notes of the curry and it was even better with the rice. It could have used a bit more spice but otherwise, it was pretty good. The other dish we got was the baked Portuguese chicken with rice. We both expected the dish to come with tomato sauce but it came with a yellow sauce instead? Neither of us were sure what the sauce was made up of exactly because there wasn't a distinct flavor to it. Even though it was Portuguese chicken, it was nothing like what you would find at Nando's. In addition to chicken, the dish also had slices of hot dogs, tomatoes, bell pepper, potatoes and olives. An interesting mix of toppings but it was surprisingly alright. read more

This is a HK style cafe but with a Macau twist I think. It has Macau version of curry instead of HK style curry. First of all, their prices are like Copa Cafe so you'd think there'd be a little more quality in their food, but it's not. I don't think the food reflects the price at all. I came at lunch time and ordered one of their lunch specials. I forgot what it was called. It was like "ying yang fried rice" like at all the other HK style restaurants, but with a different name. It was the first one of their lunch special list. It comes with garlic bread, soup (choice of HK borsht or cream soup), and drink. Garlic bread had about a 1 inch radial spread and that was it. Not crispy, just room temperature and soft. The cream soup was not creamy at all. Had small bits of ham. Definitely not as much stuff as other restaurants. The fried rice came with half tomato/shrimp sauce, and half Macau style chicken curry. I have been to many HK style restaurant here in Vancouver and and in HK and they make the Macau "Portuguese style curry" and this tasted nothing like it. Granted, I've only been to Macau 3 times but I've never tried their curry. I assumed HK would make the same as Macau since we are beside each other. Anyways, it was salty, lacked flavor, very little pieces of chicken. The tomato sauce side had a fair amount of shrimp, but no tomato taste. Everything didn't seem to have much of the original taste, but just salty taste. We also ordered an appetizer - smoke salmon with fruit salad. I assumed a fruit salad would come as canned fruit mixed with mayo like at all HK style restaurants. This place was just honeydew and cantaulope. It was gross. Almost $10 for 2 pieces of smoke salmon and melons. Nothing taste like anything I've ever eaten before at a HK style restaurant before. Expensive for the low quality food. Food has no taste. Stopped by for a quick afternoon snack, this is a well established Hong Kong Style Steakhouse. They offer a lighter menu from 2:30 - 5:00pm / 9:00pm - closing. We ordered 2 items: Beef Brisket with Rice Vermicelli in Soup, the beef is slightly chewy, soup base is very well balanced and not salty. 3/5 stars Singapore Fried Rice Vermicelli, this is a classic HK style cafe item and was done well, not greasy, with the right level of spice from the curry paste they use to fry the vermicelli. 3/5 stars Both item can be had with coffee or tea, we choose Iced Lemon Tea. They really outshine a lot of these type of Cafes by using good quality tea to make their Iced Tea!! Worth coming just because of their tea! Service is the no non-sense HK Cafe style. My coworkers have been local Richmondites for decades and insists La Amigo is the best HK cafe in the area. Apparently this place is super busy during afternoon tea time (2pm-4 pm), but it was fairly empty when we had lunch at 1 pm. We all ordered the set lunch for $14.95 (a bit more expensive than other cafes) which included a soup, garlic bread, drink, and a main. First up was the cream soup with ham and corn. This was quite good, didn't taste overly starchy or watered down. The garlic bread came soon after and it had a nice crispy edges with a soft middle. Not a bad start. For the main, I chose the grilled chicken with garlic sauce with rice (you can also choose spaghetti). There were two large pieces of chicken leg, crispy skin and very moist, with a bed of corn and rice. I thought this was quite well executed and I was super full. The hot milk tea I got was pretty good and silkier than the recent ones I've been getting at Red Bud Cafe or Happy Date. I can't quite say that this is the best HK cafe in Richmond given that I've only tried one thing so far, but I've had a good first experience. I'll think about coming again for their afternoon specials. read more

For a Hong Kong Style cafe, La Amigo is a bit pricier, more expensive but also has some unique dishes. We used to come quite often as many of their choices come with soup and a dessert. As a family of four, we tried out three of the "meals" and one dish. Their very popular cajun style baked chicken was my order and it came with two huge pieces of chicken thigh lightly spiced and accompanied by rice, spaghetti or fries. This was quite good being juicy and flavourful but a little bit on the expensive side. The rest of my family ordered the steak set, baked seafood with rice and a pan fried sablefish with jambalaya rice dish. Set meals came with garlic toast and soup as well (cream or "borscht") and a mango pancake which really had too much cream. All were large portions and tasted fine but came with higher prices than other similar restaurants. Overall, I'm not a lover of this type of food in the first place so I wouldn't choose this restaurant for my first pick but the food is quite good and there isn't usually a wait. read more

Came here with Vincent N. to see what this was all about, with the 4.5 stars was about. Parking may or may not be sufficient in the lot out front. Depends on which day you come. I must say that it's a bit unusual to have a HK-style cafe with a Mexican theme, but they manage to pull this off somewhat tastefully. The walls are a bright yellow, and the decorations look *somewhat* authentic. I had the Thai style chicken salad. This was.. different. It was definitely creative, but it also had the taste of rubber gloves for some reason. The chicken is really some breaded cutlet (similar to tonkatsu), and the salad "dressing" is plum sauce. It would've worked, but that glove taste overwhelmed everything, making me slightly sick as I ate the thing. Maybe i got unlucky. Since nobody else seemed to have this problem, maybe it's a one-off. What an awful experience tonight!!! We ordered the Veal Cutlet, French Onion soup & Curry Brisket...nothing was to standard and the dinner costed $50 after tax & tips! The French Onion with puff pastry was tasteless, the soup had onions and pieces of bread inside and wasn't even rich enough and there was NO cheese!!! What is a French Onion Soup without cheese?! The "veal" cutlet was breaded and deep fried! It was NOT veal! My husband doesn't even complain about food and always finishes everything but he didn't finish it!! It was salty and was definitely NOT veal! The curry brisket was super salty and it took almost 20mins for my order to arrive... Will never go back!!!! I'm HK style cafes fans! I have been there so many times for lunch and dinner and found it served good food and not disappointed me. I like their western set menu/dishes more than Chinese style dishes. The pork chop spaghetti in black pepper sauce was good. read more

When I'm eating out with people, no matter how big or small, fancy or hole-in-the-wall a place is, I want to have a good time with the people and sometimes a single action or comment can make or break that experience. Since it's located on Alexandra, there was no parking even in the back of the building at 6:30pm. It's expected of Alexandra so be sure to leave yourself ample time to find a parking spot if you're in the area or carpool if you can. We had a party of 7 and we were given a round table that's situated in the middle of the place. They only had one big table in the back corner but that one was already taken up so we got the next best I suppose but for sake of comfort, I would have preferred that they park two tables together and give a bigger surface area instead. Don't let the name fool you. It's not a Mexican restaurant but rather an Americanized Cantonese place that offers lobster sets as well. I originally wanted to get the black pepper pork chop with spaghetti but the waitress informed that if I add a couple more dollars I could get a soup, drink and dessert so I went for that option. I got my usual iced lemon tea and the cup was overly sticky all around the glass that I ended up wrapping a napkin around the glass as it was way too sticky. Everything seemed fine for the dinner service. The place never filled up but paying was a little confusing as you're given the original notepad they took the order on and a small receipt of the costs, it was super difficult to calculate whose order was whose as they had entered in the additional drinks after all the food. The place is cash only and we had paid but the cashier kept staring at us while we were getting ready to leave so one of the individuals in my party chimed if there was an issue and the cashier bluntly announced that we had only tipped her $11. Because we were struggling for the bill for so long, our bill total was $136 and we paid $150. Regardless whether it was before tax or after tax, we had given her more than a 10% tip. For the prices of their items, I don't think that was the correct attitude of the cashier and while tipping the minimum 10% has now become a norm, tipping should also be based on your experiences and the staff didn't do much for our table even though some of us were ordering $20+ for their meals. I don't think I would be back for food if this is the attitude the staff is going to have. read more

Don't let the name fool you... La Amigo is definitely not a Mexican restaurant. It's actually a Hong Kong style cafe. Who would've known?! I've come here on a few separate occasions, all a few years apart from each other, and surprisingly their menu hasn't changed. They have their go-to food and they're just running with it. And I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed. Food-wise everything is great. I've always gotten their famous dish: Chef's Cuisine - Cajun baked chicken and it's delicious. For $17 I get a soup (lobster chowder all the way!), the cajun chicken itself, served with your choice of rice or spaghetti, a drink of your choice and a dessert. Talk about a deal! Their menu consists of a Westernized Hong Kong cuisine, and everything looks delicious. Also, their almond milk is AH-MAZING. If you've ever wondered what heaven in a cup tastes like, it's in the form of La Amigo's almond milk. I'd recommend getting the warm version. However, they lose points for their service. We sat down and they immediately brought us tea. Awesome, no problem with that. I then asked for water for the table and the server looked at me and said "Oh, so no tea?" and I said "No, we'll drink the tea for sure, but we would just like some water as well", she then scoffed in my face and just turned around. When she returned with the waters, she didn't say anything and just placed them on the table very aggressively with water spilling out of the glasses, and then left. Our server who took our order and brought out our food was different than the original lady who dropped off the waters. She was very attentive and kind, which was a nice change from the beginning of our meal. If you find your way in this part of Richmond, I would still say to come in because their food is just that tasty. read more

A relative took me and my mom here when we came to Vancouver. Wow it does taste like HONG KONG food! I had the New York steak with spaghetti with a HK coffee! I was really reminded of Hong Kong! This restaurant, with a Mexican name (and screwed up gender matching between La and Amigo), has all the normal HK style cafe menu items (and a few "upscale" ones like lobster bisque, etc. But because of that attempt at upscaling also has greatly upscaled its prices without really enhancing the quality at all. Talk about sticker shock when you open a menu in a HK cafe and see lots of prices in the $30 range. Oh puhleeze! I ended up settling on my standard test dish - baked pork chop rice. Most places give you a drink, and frequently a soup with the dish. Not here. Premium pricing, yet all you get is the single plate. I thought, "Ok, this better be a damn good plate." Sadly it wasn't. The only Cantonese restaurant that I know which serves African chicken. It is a lightly bread-ed chicken breast with a spicy tomato cream sauce. My date wanted some HK style cafe food and we ended up here. The parking lot was full and we ended up just paying metered parking on the street. It was the typical weekend Richmond parking situation here. The restaurant was not that busy when we entered. We were seated right away and served tea and menus. The ambiance I would describe as modern casual, but the menu pricing was more on the expensive side and did not match the ambiance. We both decided to ordered off the Chef Special menu. My date ordered the charbroiled rib-eye steak 8 oz ($27.95) and I ordered the blackened Cajun chicken leg with spiced tomato cream sauce ($18.95). The special menu included a choice of drinks, soup and dessert. We paid an extra $1 for the upgrade to a cold drink. Lemon tea was standard as expected. We both ordered lobster chowder for our choice of soup. The chowder was fantastic. I could taste the lobster in the soup base. There was bits of lobster and vegetables mixed in. There was toasted bread served on the side to accompany the chowder. The steak was cooked to medium rare as requested by my date. My chicken leg was more of a chicken thigh that was nicely pan fried with a crispy layer of chicken skin. The tomato sauce was flavourful. The vegetables was alright. For dessert, my date picked black sesame pudding and I picked taro pudding. The puddings were nicely made. There was real taro bits mixed in the pudding and provided a nice texture and freshness. The black sesame pudding had a layer of sesame at the bottom to give a strong sesame flavour without overpowering the pudding. Our server also mentioned that banana pancake was available and I was confused by the word pancake. Looking at the Yelp pics, the banana pancake looks like a folded up crepe. Service was fast. Overall, food was very good. The restaurant accepted credit card payment as we met the credit card limit. I really enjoyed the food, but I think the pricing explains why the restaurant was not that busy on a weekend evening. read more

This HK cafe has been around for years and when I used to live closer to Richmond, I preferred their food quality and service better than the other ones in the area. Fast forward to this weekend, I return with an out-of-town friend who wanted to go to a HK Cafe so I decide to bring her to La Amigo for lunch. We had kids with us and it was good that they had enough high chairs. We also notice a lot of other young family with kids eating around us. However, the service has really gone downhill with waitresses that forget to give you the right utensils, don't look at you when you order or ask them questions, and just grunts and generally looks annoyed at any requests you have. The menu is more upscale-ish with items like Lobster Bisque with Puff Pastry and Baked Escargot with Puff Pastry that are a bit more unusual for a HK cafe. I stuck to their lunch special with a NY Steak that came with daily soup & drink (+$1 for cold). It was OK, standard fare. Price is comparable to other HK Cafes for lunch specials. The Ice HK Style Tea was good. My husband had the Baked Seafood and he enjoyed it and felt it was above average. My friend ordered the Baked Escargot with Puff Pastry and... it was not edible- it tasted like the escargots may be past its prime. She also ordered the French Onion Soup which although the Puff Pastry is good, the soup itself was too salty for our taste. Overall, if you stick to the HK Cafe menu items and order from the specials, the price and quality of food is still better than other HK Cafes. The service is not. If I find myself in Richmond again and craving HK Cafe food, I would return; but I won't go out of my way to drive there from downtown. read more

Came here for a home style meal. I ordered a set menu and it came with soup and bread and drink. The main course came and looked wonderful. My first bite instantly i tasted soiled pork. The lady argued with me that its just pork taste. I objected and refused to order another meal. Appetite was ruined. We had take out yesterday and my friend had the curry beef brisket which contains peanuts but no where says it contains peanuts. He had a severe reaction and spent hours at Richmond General Hospital. When his girlfriend called to explain what happened, we were told that all their curry dishes contain crushed peanuts. Very irresponsible of this restaurant not to explain this in the menu. Come here if you want to wait 30+ minutes for your food while asian women waitresses talk to each other in kitchen, instead of working. They regularly get orders wrong also. Late night mini-meals with a drink started at 9 and they had the usual common items on the menu, not as abundent as some of the other HK-style cha-chaan-tang (cafes). The vegetable and beef soup was overly salted or possibly from yesterday and the soup got saltier overnight. Then my friends food came and mine came 15mins later. It's like dining separately instead of together. Cantonese cafe should be known for their rich and flavourful milk tea but their milk tea was sugary and watery. My pork steak was from some sort of low grade meat as it's full of veins and fat. And when I ask to have my food packed , they only packed me half what was on my plate. I looooove Baked Porkchop on Rice, but this place's portion of meat to rice was too skewed. Too much rice, not enough meat! But the Baked Seafood on Rice was REALLY good. Decent size of shrimps...and clams! They were still in their shells, which made it even better. And it tasted really good, so I think next time, I'll get that one. It was definitely worth the price. For now, 3/5, but who knows? Maybe my next return will be better. read more

Best Hong Kong Cafe which can be better. Everything done well 90% of the time. A bit pricey which is ok. the only complaint is the side dish they offer. They always use corn and diced carrot for the side dish. So damn boring and cheap. Please give us something interesting like green beans, broccoli, cauliflower etc... Also, not everybody like to eat steak for dinner, so please offer more variety for your dinner sets. besides, your steaks are just ok. read more
