What we ordered: Limited Gigantic snow crab 3lb with salted egg yolk sauce - highly recommended by staff Seafood fried rice Baked large beach oyster with four unique flavors. Highlight was definitely snow crab! Salted egg yolk sauce was great as usual, crab meat was so tender and sweet! I am glad to follow staff's advice. Presentation was good, too. Rice cake was chewy, soft and paired with sauce so well and so addictive. Seafood fried rice was also great! Clam was so juicy and delicious! prawn was nicely firm and very good. Ingredients were outstanding. And Baked beach oyster was also great item. Oyster paired with each unique different flavor(Forgot to ask what kinds of each flavor..), Oyster itself was very large and creamy. Highly recommend this item, too. We only came here by accident - was trying to go eat ramen and saw all the hustle and bustle around the place, saw that it was in Canada Top 100! Glad we gave it a try. This is the place to come to have northern Chinese style seafood, especially fish. You choose from hotpot, soup, or steamed fish and get tons of fresh choices. You can choose for the hotpot the soup, weight of fish, veggies, spiciness level, and other adjustments. It is HUGE! We chose the nonspicy soup, with package of tofu skin, lotus root, seaweed knots. The fish is pretty good. Good flavour - though I have to admit I'm not one to try the spicy, but don't worry the soy no spicy flavour is still pretty flavourful. I got some rice to go with it and I definitely recommend something to go otherwise it's pretty soupy. The other dishes were reflective of a very high quality place. - cucumber salad was excellent. The one star is for the food. The service deserves zero stars. I have never experienced this kind of treatment in Canada before. Throughout our visit, the waitress directed almost all of her attention to my husband. She explained everything to him in detail while barely acknowledging me. I was left to read the menu and figure out what to order on my own. I also noticed the same behavior at other tables. She spoke primarily to the men while largely ignoring the women. Even after I placed the entire order for our table, she continued checking only with my husband about everything we needed. When it came to drinks, after the two men had placed their orders, she didn't even ask me if I wanted anything before walking away, as if I were invisible. At the end of the meal, after I paid the bill, she turned to my husband, smiled only at him, and completely ignored me. It was extremely impolite and made me feel disrespected. The food was good, but the service was the worst part of the experience. Based on how I was treated, it felt discriminatory. the fish man feels like something has changed compared to how it used to be. it doesn't quite hit as hard as it once did, when the flavours were bolder, punchier, and more memorable overall. this visit felt more restrained. the prawn dish, which used to be loaded with dried chilies and minced garlic, now comes with green and red peppers and a softer, more toned down flavour. it's still decent, just not as distinctive or intense as before. the seafood fried rice also felt more standard this time, with less wok hei and that smoky depth that used to set it apart. it was properly made, just less seafood and less memorable. the pea tips were the highlight, well executed with garlic and good wok hei, and closest to the quality we remember from earlier visits. we also had chicken yakitori, a small portion, five skewers with slightly fatty meat and simple seasoning, which was pleasant but not particularly memorable. the watermelon juice was fresh, light, and refreshing. service was polite and efficient, though the dining room felt a bit more transactional, with newer staff and less of the familiar flow the restaurant used to have. overall, still a decent seafood spot in richmond, but something has definitely changed. it doesn't feel quite as bold or distinctive as it once did, even though the food is still solid and the experience runs smoothly. read more

The Fish Man was probably our favorite meal during our winter road trip. We made reservations thinking that we might try the king crab. We changed our mind on the king crab since we were only a party of 3. We ended up ordering a geoduck clam two ways, as sashimi and poached, a Dungeness crab with salted egg yolk, and a seafood fried rice. The food was fantastic. The clam whether poached or sashimi was briny and had a great crunch to it. It was very good with a little bit of lemon. The crab came with fried rice cakes. The salted egg yolk gave it a nice flavor. They cooked it perfectly. The fried rice was one of the best fried rice that we've ever had. The rice came with full size shrimp. We weren't expecting dessert, but, I think because our family of 3 ordered so much, they gave us a complimentary dessert. We enjoyed everything about our meal at the Fish Man. My family went here for dinner based on its recognition in the Chinese Restaurant Awards (2022), Vancouver Magazine Best Restaurants Awards (2024) and countless Instagram reviews. We made a reservation on OpenTable (which is a rare platform to use among Chinese restaurants in Greater Vancouver). We were seated a few minutes after arrival. The space feels energetic. It's a more modern restaurant, so there is much color and younger vibrancy than a traditional Chinese restaurant. What else is different? No round tables - only smaller square tables - which means it's better designed for small groups rather than large groups. We ended up trying a number of items: - Beef Belly Skewers: Very good. Everyone loved them. I wished we had ordered more. - Chicken Skewers: Ok. I think asked for something but they ran out and gave us gizzards and hearts, which are never good because they become mealy and not enjoyable to eat. - Dungeness Crab with Salty Egg Yolk: Good. Prepared as well as lots of restaurants. They provide disposable gloves to eat with, but nothing to crack the shells. - Stir Fried Vegetables: Good. No complaints. - Fresh Fish with Tofu Hot Pot: Very good. - Fresh Fish Steamed: Very good. - Lobster with Sticky Rice: Very good. Service is really very good. Genuinely more friendly and talkative than I'm accustomed too, but I appreciated. Overall, a good meal. The Fish Man is a great spot for fresh seafood. We the seasonal meal. The mala razor clams were the highlight as it was great flavor and texture! The lobster was slightly disappointing as it lacked flavor or depth. The lobster itself felt fresh, but seems a bit small/little meat for 3lb. Would love to go back and try other things on their menu. Staff was friendly and able to answer all of our questions. There were plenty of tables available at 1:30pm. This is a fantastic place for Chinese seafood, particularly the ingredients and cooking. Everything was incredibly fresh and juicy. Seafood should be fresh and less salty with more natural flavours. If you don't like their cooking style then that's your problem and you shouldn't bother with Chinese seafood or Chinese food. Fish Man has always had a decent reputation in Richmond, and coming back after 2 years, i was very disappointed by how far the quality has fallen. I was recommended by a friend to try their sour cabbage fish, but unfortunately the dish was some how more sweet than sour, with a strong taste of MSG that didnt even contribute to the umami that MSG is known for. We ordered the ling cod, but it did not taste too fresh. The clams we ordered, although big, was also underseasoned, and a bit undercooked too giving it a slightly fishy taste that a sign of poor quality int the raw ingredient. Overall, a bland disppointment. The prawns however, were pretty good. The skins were crispy, flavourful and easy to eat! We also tried some of their bbq skewers, and that too was quite mid. Nothing to special about it. While the service is average and the environment lively, the quality food is not up to par anymore, and given the general quality of chinese food in richmond, i would not waste a meal here. read more

The first thought I had when the sour lingcod dish came out was that it is so much bigger than anything served in restaurants in NYC! The flavor was still very on point although I would have liked it spicier. The other main fish we ordered, which was a rockfish on their signature grill with a mix of toppings, was a bit less exciting as it tasted a bit over cooked and not spicy enough. It could have been an off hour because the restaurant was technically on lunch break when we came in. The skewers were also mostly delicious, but a few pieces were a bit over cooked as well and ate dry. The chicken wing ended up being the best, with the intestine being a second. The host came across with his comment as if they were going to make an exception for us. It was 4:15pm. The tea cup was dirty (orange grease food stain that was put in the clean pile) so had to replace that after I requested. We ordered rice and it wasn't until after the food was brought out and we requested that the rice came out. In addition, the food platters didnt have serving spoons. Had to ask for ther and got one small spoon. Food--the lobster was ok. Main seasoning was salt. I didn't taste the ginger flavor or scallion flavor despite having it in the lobster. Richmond is the place for some fantastic, wonderfully fresh seafood. The Fish Man is the restaurant to eat at if you're looking for fresh, whole fish cooked in a variety of different styles and sauces to select from. We ordered the special fish of the day, which was a flathead mullet. The server told us the smallest one will be about 2lbs. We opted for black bean sauce and added in a golden combo (cabbage, lotus root, seaweed, and bean curd) cooked along with the fish. We also ordered some ribeye beef skewers and the jumbo prawns. The fish comes out in a pan that is on charcoal briquettes that burned for about 30 min, the perfect amount of time for us to finish the dish piping hot the whole time. The server brought out the live, flapping fish to make sure the size and look of it was acceptable to us before they cooked it. There was so much food! We pretty much ate the entire fish and the skewers. We had some prawns leftover. Everything was amazing and fresh. Seafood is definitely the thing to order here. We'll skip on the beef skewers next time. The restaurant is pretty big and was full the entire time we were there. They open late so a great place for a late meal if in the area. The bill for two people came out to under $120 USD which is a good deal for the amount of food and the quality. This is a definite return again the next time we're in Richmond. read more

The crab was nearly 3lbs, and very fresh. The Thai curry sauce paired well with the crab and is very tasty with the rice it is served over. The scallops were very garlicky, which I personally like. This is an expensive meal, and you will be dropping $$$ as it is a seafood joint. The food was pretty good. We loved the claypot, clams, and crab. For the price, I would expect to be really blown away. It was good, but the total came out to more than $300. Our friends raved about this place, but we were taken aback with how much stuff there was on the menu! We ended up ordering: The grill with lingcod (for less bones), in the savoury spicy flavour (it wasn't very spicy at all), with enoki mushrooms, bean curd, and tofu. We also ordered 5 skewers of beef ribeye and 10 skewers of the fatty beef (because you have to get 5+ of each skewer). The mussels were great, we loved the black bean sauce. Not pictured was cucumber salad which was also great. They must have mistyped our order as they'd forgotten a few things which we ended up cancelling rather than wait. Best meal I had during a recent trip to Richmond..... and its is so good I would consider driving the 200 miles to eat again. However, there is a queue even if you make a reservation, and the wait is not much shorter. When we got there, the queue was 45minutes. A lady arriving just behind us also with a party of two was told that she had to wait 30 minutes even though she was 5 minutes early for her reservation! We came for the hot-pot fish, and so we ordered one. A medium ling cod with the sour cabbage flavour and Golden Combo sides that turned out to be huge. We initially LOVED the eclectic take on seafood - we ordered the raw oysters with sea urchin, ginger scallion geoduck, lobster with salty egg encrustation, and grouper fish pot. Everything tasted delicious and we were very impressed by the presentation. Then, one of our girls fell ill that night and found out she had food poisoning which r took her out for two days of an otherwise awesome ski trip to Whistler. We believe it was a bad oyster. And while this comes with the turf of raw foods, we rarely get food poisoning from eating raw items, but please be forewarned. Sad to say we will not be coming back to this establishment. read more
