A staff member subsequently returned to our table and asked us to give an additional $20. I felt uncomfortable and pressured by this, and ultimately increased the tip to $30. I appreciate that $10 was a modest gratuity. However, the service was very poor. Our servers were inattentive, did not bother to provide basic items such as sauces and soy sauce, and some of the interactions with staff came across as rude. This was particularly disappointing because the standard of service at your restaurant used to be much better. My concern is not about the $20. Gratuities are voluntary, and your receipt presents 15%, 18%, and 20% as suggested tip amounts rather than a mandatory service charge. If a customer feels that the service does not warrant one of those amounts, I do not believe they should be approached and pressured to increase their tip. I was also uncomfortable with staff looking closely at the payment terminal while I was entering my PIN. Customers should be given appropriate privacy while entering their PIN or completing payment. I am not seeking reimbursement or trying to make an issue over the money. I would simply appreciate clarification of your tipping policy and ask that management address these practices with staff. Customers should be able to choose an appropriate gratuity based on the service they receive without feeling pressured or embarrassed.
