A pound of snow crab and egg and corn
    Joey Y.

I ordered a pound of snow crab and an egg and corn. I got the captain sauce which was bomb but the crab meat seemed like it's old and overcooked. The corn was dry and not juicy. The egg was just a regular hard boiled egg. For the lobster roll, it was good. If you don't like celery, you should ask for less! The service was great. The server kept check up on me to see how the food was.

The Captains Boil has always been more of a curiosity to me than a 'must try.' Actually wanted to go to a Korean restaurant close by but it wasn't open yet so went here instead. Should have waited the extra half hour for the Korean restaurant to open. The Captains Boil was just ok. Perhaps it would have be better to come in with a large group or family. Might get more bang for your buck that way!? Regardless, it's quite pricey if you want the 'good stuff' seafood - see menu pix! I wasn't prepared to spend so much knowing there's excellent Happy Hours all over Metro Vancouver were one can get excellent seafood - at the right price. Over 100 bucks for seafood - it better be friggin orgasmic! Right!? We had the Lobster Sliders with Cajun Fries (the Cajun Fries at Popeyes are way better) & the Garlic Shrimp - specials offered before 5pm. There was just nothing exciting about this experience - food tasted ok but had zero razzmatazz. Sad! Would I return? Only with a large group as a means of gauging if the Captain's Boil is any good at all. If you are planning on coming here, I recommend you have a look at the menu ahead of time & give yourself an idea of what to expect price wise.

Heads up that this is a restaurant where you use your hands to eat. Costumers are provided with plastic bib and gloves, I have witnessed a costumer who left as theirs no spoons provided, that was two years ago, just ask nicely and they surely will provide utensils. Been here many times, and was always satisfied with their services, I love the foods the spicy level and Richmond branch is so far the best to me compared to other area. You can either go with their combo's or by pounds, if its your first time, I recommend the combo as it has all four types of seafood. The menu is very detailed choose the meat, the sauce the spicy level. They have delicious sauce type and my favourite would be the Cajun and garlic. If you have high spicy level, go for the fire or volcano level. Some complain its messy, but I think its up to the one eating how organize you are, theirs a bucket provided to put shells, or just on the table. So far the price has always been consistent, and cleanliness was well observed, I highly recommend this area to seafood lovers and spicy eaters, their are other non seafood as well such as chicken, vegetables and fries.

It was right desicion to chose here for dine in after 2 months self isolation. I don't remember how many times I said hmmmmmm closing eyes. Those dishes have to be eaten right here on the table. We had mid level of Captain boil spice with dungeness crab, clams, shrimp, potato, okra, lotus roots and rice. Everything tasted delicious and we combined two bags to enjoy left sauce with rice at last. Maybe not good behavior but so good. All seafood extract comes together. I highly recommend the deep fried lotus roots which has interesting texture and lots of sauce in the holes. It was eye opening deliciousness.

I tried this place 2 years ago, but decided to try it again after coming across it on DoorDash! Gotta say, it was delicious!! I had the garlic shrimp! As someone who is an extreme seafood lover, this satisfied my cravings!! I've tried their Cajun fries and it was delicious as well!!! After going there a few years ago, ordering in during the weekends for me is always the better option! The parking could be something they could work on, considering it's so packed! It's competitive to get a spot on sunny weekends! Overall, will order in again! It was fast and quite tasty!

Been here twice and our experienced was very good. The place is not that busy so we were seated right away. The place is very spacious and staff are very friendly. This branch is very consistent with their quality of sauce as it's very tasty and flavorful. Was happy with our visit.

Captain's Boil is a franchise. I am not a big fan of Captain's Boil seafood because the flavors doesn't seem to be there. Most of their seafood are frozen and are already cooked but than recooked with the sauces or seasoning. Seems a bit lacking and most of the time its not like super fresh but they still charge premium for it. This Captain's Boil has the Lobster Roll Combo offered for $14.95. It comes with Lobster Bisque and a Lobster Roll. The bisque was so so. It didn't taste like Lobster Bisque at all. It was super salty. The Lobster Roll was good but it was only good because the lobsters were served on a garlic bread. Of course its good. Anything garlicy in my mind is tasty. Definitely not the traditional Lobster Roll that I am used to. I also got the fried shrimps on top. It was ok. It came with fries and I have to say the fries were good. They were seasoned in Cajun spices. Overall it was ok. Parking is plentiful outside. I probably won't come back. Its not like something I would be craving for.

Great experience and great food. We ordered the pirate's feast which came with our choice of crab, 1lb each of shrimp, mussels, and clams, seafood fried rice, cajun fries, and a whole bunch of sides. There was more than enough food to feed 4 people and we were all very satisfied. The crab was perfectly cooked and had a good amount of meat, the mussels were massive and very flavourful, the clams were a bit small but were still good, and some of the shrimp were overcooked and mushy but that did not ruin the meal for us. We all enjoyed eating with our hands, which adds to the positive experience of this place. It's definitely a treat to come here as the flavours can be very heavy and the prices aren't cheap, but overall everyone had a great time!

I have been to the Captain's Boil at least a dozen times. Always a good time, good service, and of course good sea food. Personally, I mostly only care about shrimp so I cannot speak much to the other menu items. the AYCE deal is good only if you know you can eat more than 2lbs. Otherwise, buying at regular price may end up being cheaper. Happy to see that they brought back the good sauce mix with garlic and everything else after it went downhill for a while around a year ago.

A lb of garlic mussel and Cajun clam.
    Lucy D.

We came in hungry and craving seafood. We walked out pretty satisfied. We ordered a lb of mussel, clam and shrimp each. Mussel was cooked in garlic sauce and that was the best. Clam and shrimp were cooked in Cajun. The spice was mild and good. We also added 2 portions of lotus root which was a lot. Overall, pretty good food although slightly pricy if you want to get a full meal with just the seafoods.

    Leena S.

Getting to eat with your hands? Awesome I'm in! This restaurant is great for larger groups as well. The seafood options are great! I got the king crab, muscles, broccoli, corn clams and of course the fries. The food was great! No complaints there. I will def be going back! The flavours are unreal Service has room for improvement, needed to waive down a server everytime we needed something.

Snow crab, mussels, clams, shrimp, corn, potatoe
    Stephen C.

2nd time to this location since grand opening (was disappointed on grand opening) but decided to try again and give this location another shot Much improvement from before. Service was readily available and quick. Busier location than Vancouver locations. Have parking available but always packed. Had the following - 6 raw oysters - average but decent size Shrimp - not mushy like previous experience Mussels - not chewy, flavourful, large in size Snow crab - average, not that big for price Clams - very good Corn - bit mushy and over cooked Shrimp fried rice - average, nothing too special Unlike the Vancouver location, no pitcher for pop but individual cans sold per Thought there we be some consistency but assume being franchise, not all same

May be it's because we are all in "food coma" by the end of dinner! This visit was for dinner - and we were outside the door waiting even before they opened at 5:30. On a Tuesday. And we were already second in line. Celebrating a birthday, we had cold jellyfish starter, lobster fried e-fu mein, braised pomelo skin with seafood, and beef fried kai lan. The lobster was perfectly cooked. Even slight over-cooking can make the lobster meat tough. However, every piece was perfectly cooked. Including the large claws. Cooked with ginger and scallions, the lobster gravy coated each strand of e-fu noodles to umami yumminess. The braised pomelo skin was a special seasonal dish. I have not had this dish in many decades, and when I saw this in the special seasonal menu, I had to get it. The bittersweet braised pomelo skin complemented perfectly the fresh seafood, and topped a bed of Chinese spinach. It was the first time for the other members of my family and they literally sucked it all down. The beef with kai lan was another standout. Beef slices were tender and delicious and that perfectly complemented the well seared gai lan - great evidence of wok hei. Service is exemplary. Not just for a Chinese restaurant, but for any restaurant. The servers are constantly on the alert, and Everytime they see a plate filled with lobster shells, they would whip it away and replace it with a clean plate. They made sure that tea cups were filled and kept us updated with the delivery of the next dish. And at the end of the meal, dessert (Tong Shui) was complimentary... and they added a wonderfully light and flaky walnut cookie and piece of mochi for each of us.

When you dine here, for me at least, it's like entering the Willy Wonka of Food Paradise…read more I specifically came here to try the gooey duck. An extremely large prehistoric claim that you need special mining tools to get to and is only available on the west coast. The Gooey Duck tasted like a soft clam. Not too chewy, and full of crisp flavor. I also was lucky enough to come during happy hour, so I tried the periwinkles and escargot for fifth-teen dollars each. The escargot was not what I was expecting as I only ever had it before in French restaurants where it is served basically in a ball shape covered with butter and garlic, the escargot here were very small and you had to get it out of the shell with a toothpick. After researching snail, I understand there are three different types of snail you can eat. This one is much different than the one if find in French restaurants, but I am glad I was adventurous and tried it. The Periwinkles I liked more than the snail however these were even harder to get out of the shell and you have to really stab and twirl to even have a chance of getting them out of the shell. We probably left over half in the shell. Pro-Tip : Get the jade conch! They gave me two complimentary as they knew I really wanted to try it and not have to order three entrees and a main entree to try everything I came here for. Thank you very much Shellfish Shack, as I loved the Jade Conch and would definitely get this again in the future. The conch were very large and came out of the shell fairly easily. They had two distinct flavors as you reached the bottom of the jade conch, they were more succulent and flavorful, the top portion of the jade conch was a bit spongier and chewier, but I liked these by far much greater than the snail and periwinkles. The girlfriend got the scallops, and they tasted sweet and delicious. Now if you're not sold yet on the place they have a fun game you get to play with the purchase of any beer. You crack off the cap on a pinko looking board and if the cap lands into one of the slots you can get free oysters or other free goodies. I ended up getting two tsing-tao beers but got the try again maybe next time slot both times : ) Great different experience, highly recommend! As always people SYOY!!!

We made a reservation on OpenTable (which is a rare platform to use among Chinese restaurants in Greater Vancouver). We were seated a few minutes after arrival. The space feels energetic. It's a more modern restaurant, so there is much color and younger vibrancy than a traditional Chinese restaurant. What else is different? No round tables - only smaller square tables - which means it's better designed for small groups rather than large groups. We ended up trying a number of items: - Beef Belly Skewers: Very good. Everyone loved them. I wished we had ordered more. - Chicken Skewers: Ok. I think asked for something but they ran out and gave us gizzards and hearts, which are never good because they become mealy and not enjoyable to eat. - Dungeness Crab with Salty Egg Yolk: Good. Prepared as well as lots of restaurants. They provide disposable gloves to eat with, but nothing to crack the shells. - Stir Fried Vegetables: Good. No complaints. - Fresh Fish with Tofu Hot Pot: Very good. - Fresh Fish Steamed: Very good. - Lobster with Sticky Rice: Very good. Service is really very good. Genuinely more friendly and talkative than I'm accustomed too, but I appreciated. Overall, a good meal. It was different in that the decor and service is what really stood out, and that's the difference maker compared to most other Chinese restaurants with the same quality of food. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.

We were hoping for an 8 lb king crab (or less) as there were only five of us including two kids that ended up not really eating much of the crab (as expected), and the smallest they had was over 9 lbs, no big deal let's go! We had the king crab three way, garlic steamed for the legs, salt & pepper for the joints, and the rest was made into a fried rice. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, our cravings were truly satisfied. We also had several dim sum items for the kiddos, and they were happy with the quality (not pictured are BBQ pork bun, egg tarts, and XL). It was a pricey meal, but we were happy with getting our craving fixed.

We followed Google maps to the restaurant and found out the entrance was on the back side of the building so we moved our car. It was pretty busy on a Sunday morning, but the wait wasn't too long once we put our name down. No carts here, you order off the paper menu and they bring the food to you. The dim sum was good, they had a couple things I haven't seen in So Cal like Baked shredded radish so I had to give it a try - it was very good! If you plan on having leftovers, do what the locals do and bring your own container. Otherwise they charge you 50 cents for a takeaway box.

And while there are no shortage of seafood restaurants serving fresh crab on the Steveston waterfront, we wanted to give The Crab King a fair shake. I'm so glad that we did! My wife ordered a King Crab for herself which, after tearing it literally limb-from-limb, eventually declared it to be tied for her favorite boiled crab dish anywhere! High praise coming from such a consummate crustacean connoisseur! For myself and our son, an order of fish and chips, and the grilled chicken sandwich rounded out our order, both of which were crispy, tasty and delicious. Regarding the fish and chips, they appeared to be tempura-battered, and I'm still not 100% sure what type of fish it was. It may have been cod, but it seemed more like catfish, but either way, it was tender, juicy, flaky and delicious. No complaints here! More than anything, though, the employees here went out of their way to make our experience enjoyable. Our toddler son, who is normally extremely well-behaved in restaurants, was having a bit of a fuss here and there. Without prompting, the servers brought us a little radio to play music for him, as well as a couple of toys to play with, one of them being a wind-up truck that they gave to him to take home! He loved it there, and still plays with it at home! They even played peek-a-boo with him from behind the counter, soliciting laughs and giggles, for the better part of 15 minutes! That sort of customer service is nearly impossible to find, and should be praised and cherished wherever it is found! Whatever the past may have held for this restaurant, the Crab King is an entirely new animal now, serving up fresh seafood by uncommonly wonderful employees, in a fantastic floating location. They even offer to cook spot prawns and other seafood purchased from the boats docked at the nearby waterfront marketplace, for a modest fee. With all these things going for it, there's no doubt who wears the crown of Crab King in Steveston Harbor!
