Shoestring Café is a small family owned business located in the industrial area of No. 6 Rd. Without word of mouth, one would typically not notice a restaurant in this area. However, I know why this restaurant continues to be booked and busy. I have been various times before but this was the first time in the last few years. I would describe this restaurant as western fine dining for a Chinese palate. You'll find some classic dishes but less heavy on the salt and grease, perfect for myself and the party I was dining with. I ordered the 5 course meal which was a fantastic deal for $65. The bread service at the start is so warm and yummy - don't skip out on it! The pesto sauce tiger prawns weren't overly pesto forward and had a strong presence of garlic - perfect for me! I loved the chowder as I especially like corn. The portion was also perfect considering I had many courses coming afterwards. Next, came the crab cake, which was generously filled with crab and paired with delicious house made butter. For each dish, I found the garnishes pleasing as well (especially the strawberry which was so sweet and ripe!). I think the best deal of the night was the steak. It was not too salty and cooked perfectly to a medium-rare. I managed to have leftovers as well since the portions were overwhelmingly good. Finally, the star of the night was definitely the chocolate soufflé for me. I loved the rich bitterness of the chocolate paired with ice cream on the side. I don't think this place is the best representation for fine dining. After all, they do not serve any alcohol. However, I think it is a great deal and accommodating to my taste buds. If I do not wish to drive out for fancy food, I know I can rely on the food at Shoestring café. As it is a family run business, there is only one person managing the front and I think they do a pretty good job at juggling all the duties of a host, server, and table busser! Friendly service and I love how passionate they are about quality and using fresh ingredients (eg fresh mushrooms for sauces and fresh made pasta). Steamed mussels and soufflé were so addictive and heavenly. The mussels were savoury and buttery and the soufflé was airy with the perfect amount of sweetness. They were very good! Hits and misses for the mains. While the pasta and sauce were great, we wish the seafood were panfried or something to give it a bit more texture. The duck was well done but not tough (we generally like medium rare) though we were confused by why the skin was served down as crispy skin is always a plus for duck breasts. I'm not a fan of mashed potatoes but theirs was not overly heavy and buttery, which I really appreciated and enjoyed. And yet another night of wonderful company over delicious dishes! Gosh the Rack of Wild Boar is exceptionally juicy and tender despite its thick cut. I highly recommend this dish on their Specials. Calamari sounds like a simple dish but it's a must try! And the bread and SHRIMP butter, yes you read it read, is not to be missed. My recent visit to Shoestring Cafe left me with mixed feelings. It is located in an industrial area across from the Richmond Driving Range. The cafe has a unique charm but falls short in some areas. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, perfect for a casual meal. The menu offers a decent selection of meat and seafood options, but I found the food to be average at best. The best underrated restaurant in Richmond. The steak was sooo good and tasty and just satisfied my cravings overall. I loved their set of desserts as well, couldnt choose between chocolate souffle, egg souffle, or panna cotta! Everything is worth the try though. This is like my 10th time going to this place LOL. Wow! This restaurant is so sublime! What a great find today! Amazing, delicious fresh dishes. Crab cakes with pure, fresh dungess crab. Seafood and corn chowder had so much fresh seafood in every bite. One of tonight's specials -- beef wellington -- was better than what we ate last months at Gordon Ramsey's. We were so surprised by the high-quality food, so skillfully prepared. Shoestring cafe is definitely an unique bistro that really blown me away. The location as well as the exterior of the cafe was farrrr from fancy. It's location in the middle of industrial area and banner looks old and a little run down. The interior was extremely simple, it kinda gave me an old Irish pub vibe. Menu was very simple with good selections of meat poultry and seafood options. They also offer to include an appetizer and a dessert with just $20 added to any entree. However they don't have liquor license so unfortunately no alcoholic drinks are offered here. When our dishes showed up I was really impressed with the portion of food we have. There r a lot of details put into each side that came with the entree as well. Dessert was fabulous as expected. This bistro is operated by an Asian couple. Service was tentative and personal. The owner shared that everything was made from scratch. And they put a lot of thoughts into their rotating menu so there will always be fresh ingredients and client will always have different options. The food here was fresh, unique, and generous in portion! I made a reservation here and was so excited for my 3-course feast. My friend and I sat by the window and were almost silent as we savored every bite of our meal. From the fresh french bread with crabby butter at the start of the meal to the delicious desserts we were two very happy ladies! I started with the crab and avocado tower -- so fresh it really seemed like the crab came out of the water that morning! This was a perfect first course. My friend loved her baked scallops as we sat enamored by our food. For the main course my friend had the fresh black cod and I had the shrimp and scallops. The fish was fresh and delicate and the scallops and shrimp I had were perfectly complemented by the sauce and vegetables plated together. Lastly the panna cotta was so thick and creamy I couldn't put it down. Usually it's made very sweet and jiggly - this was not super sweet but just right. I almost didn't finish it but it was so good I couldn't let any go to waste. The cheesecake was light and fluffy - different than the usual dense cheesecakes I've had that are filling and rich. We were looking for a place for dinner before an event and lucked out as they were fully booked. Told the server we will be in and out of them in under an hour and she said if you can be here within 15 mins we do have a table until 7pm. Started with the mussels and corn chowder (the best I have had). The bread is scrumptious and homemade. Mussels were so well flavoured. Out come the duck and boy oh boy, the meat were so tender. Generally, I like my duck medium well but I really enjoyed it in a rarer state. The sauce was so delicious and the sides were ample full. The chocolate soufflé was so satisfying. Basically, it has been a while since a restaurant has nailed every single dish but Shoestring Cafe absolutely did that and the super talented chef did it in under an hour. First day for Dineout Vancouver! We read some reviews and this seemed to be a great start... and having lobster as an appie piqued my interest. We started with that and it was delicious. Very well cooked and exactly how you want lobster, succulent and juicy! It also came with a corn cake aka cornbread pancake. Unexpectedly good! Next up was their grilled miso cod with vegetables. The skin was nicely grilled and crispy while keeping the rest of the fish just right. We also order the duck breast which was excellent. Cooked well and not overdone. The sauce had a greatly earthy taste that complemented the duck well. Lastly, we had the mango blueberry panna cotta. Wow! Fresh mango and the custard was perfect. We came here for the Dine Out Vancouver 2020 menu tonight. First time dining here and looked forward to a good dinner. Driving here it's a bit out of the way in a light industrial area. We were quickly seated as we had reservations and we were a few minutes early. Shortly after, the restaurant was quite full. The restaurant isn't really big but it felt very cozy. We ordered: - appetizer: Grilled Chipotle Marinated Lobster Tail and Corn Cake - this was really good. The lobster tail the the corn cake was really delicious with the marinated sauce. With a small salad it was a great start - entree1: Pan Roasted Duck Breast - I really love duck, especially from Chinese restaurants, but this very tasty with the sauce that was provided on the dish. - entree2: Black Alaska Cod - first bite of this, I was in love I do love eating fish and this was quite rich tasting but it was very tender and melted happily at each bite. - dessert1: Panna Cotta - I really liked this dessert as it was not overly sweet really paired well with mango and bluberry - dessert 2 - chocolate soufflé with ice cream - I had a couple bites and it was ok only because soufflé was a smidge over baked. I have been to this establishment twice this week while In town for business. I recommend going here at least once once if your travels take you to Richmond, or if you live here. Most of the clientele during my visit seemed to be local. This is a small, family owned business with a gracious and pleasant hostess/waitress and a chef d'cuisine who knows his business. They serve a variety of French and French-adjacent (pasta) dishes which are wonderfully prepared, perfectly seasoned, fresh ingredients, and fantastic value. They offer a'la carte starters, entrees, pastas and desserts, or pick an entree and for $17, pick any starter and dessert. I did this twice. The first night, I ordered from the specials board, and got a perfectly moist inch thick grilled pork chop with mash and veg, started off with corn and seafood chowders and finished with a chocolate soufflé. Out the door with a good tip for about $50 US. Three nights later, I had to come back for the roasted duck breast, started by chipotle shrimp on corn cakes, and once again finished by chocolate soufflé. (Pics attached). Again, out the door for about $50 US. They seem to be BYOB, I did see someone bring wine. I don't know if there Is a corkage fee. Here is their $45 DOVF menu: Bread & butter (optional), $5 extra, 8.5/10: The salty & hint of sweetness of the shrimp butter went so well w/ the warm bread! Butter was very creamy too. Appetizers: Seafood & corn chowder, 8.5/10: Melts in your mouth! Not too heavy or thick, lots of corn and big pieces of shrimp. Grilled marinated quail w/green salad, 7.5/10: Tender & flavorful, little more gamey compared to regular chicken. This was our first visit to Shoestring Cafe and we went based on the Yelp reviews. A small lively spot in an industrial strip mall. The interior was clean and cozy, and my companion loved the Tiffany lamps. We ordered off the daily blackboard for specials: baked scallops; mussels; and octopus back ink spaghetti with seafood and lobster. The baked scallops were undercooked, but that was the only negative. The mussels were sweet and delicate, and the octopus Ink pasta and seafood was amazing. The staff were lovely, and the service was great. The restaurant was full and a bit noisy (mostly by unsettled children). The price for three dishes was reasonable, and the daily combo prix fixe was a bargain if you are hungry. Apparently there is no liquor licence. read more

My husband and I visited The Shoestring Cafe for Dine Out Vancouver. This was our second time visiting. Our first time here was a couple years ago and it was a pleasant experience. The first impression when I walked in here this time was "WOW, IT'S SO BUSY!" It's a small restaurant and there was so many people inside. The tables were right next to each other and were divided by a plexiglass. Customers were seated so close together that they needed to move the table when they wanted to get out. They also allowed a big group of people to dine in different tables and they were just walking across to other tables to chat with no social distance. I understand that small businesses are doing their best to survive, but they need to put their customers' and staff's safety first. Food quality has seriously gone down since my last visit. Most of the dishes tasted artificial. Perhaps it's the seasonings they use. The blueberry & mango Panna cotta was horrible... My husband is the least picky eater I know and he even stopped eating. The chocolate souffle was good. Overall, I would not go back here again. I really hate to leave a negative review during this difficult time, but it just made it impossible to leave a good review. Shoestring Cafe is located on No. 6 Road and Maycrest Way in Richmond. It's slightly different than other Hong Kong style cafe. They serve a la carte or 3-course set menu for $39. It includes one of their appetizers, entrees and desserts on their menu or from their features of the day which is written on the blackboard. I came here for dinner and almost tried most of dishes in the menu after few times visit. Seafood chowder - it's good and creamy. It made with fresh seafood and corns. Crab and avocado salad - it loaded with fresh Dungeness crab meat with no shell. Duck breast - it's served in medium and a bit chewy. Blacken rib eye steak - it's mediocre and not top quality of rib eye steak. But, fair enough for size and taste. Black cod - it's delicious and well seasoned. Beef Wellington - just a bit disappointed. It's Chinese version of beef Wellington and overcooked. This dish required high level of cooking skill and technique, I wouldn't complain for paying this price to get real beef Wellington dish. Chocolate soufflé - it was perfect at the first visit. Dark and intense, fluffy and set. However, the second and third time became lava cake gooey mess inside. The quality of food, large portion for reasonable price. For starters, I ordered the grilled chipotle marinated lobster tail with corn cake. Sadly it was half of a lobster tail but very delicious and tasty. The corn cake and salad complimented the grilled lobster nicely. Although, it was marinated with chipotle, it wasn't too spicy. I ordered the grilled blackened NY steak, medium of course. And it was perfect, especially with that sweet carrot puree. The steak was tender and juicy. I ended the meal with the chocolate souffle, paired with vanilla ice cream. The souffle was as is should be: light and fluffy, not too sweet. This three course meal for $35 was definitely worth it. Went here a few days ago with my fiancé for the first time and had the Dine Out Vancouver menu and for $35/person, was well worth it as the portions were big and overall the food was delicious! We got the steak and cod which were both very tender and flavourful (we asked for medium rare for the steak) They ran out of the Grilled Aged New York Steak so gave us the Rib Eye instead which was fine with us when it arrived at our table and we saw how huge it was! The cod portion was understandably smaller and against the steak it looked so little. However, the cod melts in your mouth with each bite and with the appetizers and desserts, I was very full and satisfied. For appetizers, we had the Seafood Chowder which was really tasty and the Quail which also tasted good but was a bit plain on its own. The garlic toast it came with was burnt which is why I didn't give this review a full 5 stars. For desserts, we had Dark chocolate Souflee+Vanilla ice cream and Mango Blueberry Panna Cotta. The souflee was not too sweet so for sweet tooth's, you may find it a bit bitter though it goes well with the ice cream. I personally enjoy less sweet desserts so the dark chocolate was perfect for me. The Panna Cotta was really good and I found it interesting to have the mango blueberry combo but it goes really well together. The strawberry on top was sweet too which makes me happy because sometimes it's just decoration and tastes bad but not in this case. Overall, this was the first Western style food I had in Richmond and I could tell it was more Hong Kong western style which I personally enjoy but there is a difference if you've had both styles of food before. The pasta here is amazing. If you're looking for a San Francisco Bay Area type marinara sauce this is the place to come. The red sauce here is a perfect balance of acidic and sweet, you can see the carrots in it. I love the pan fried garlic noodles too. The corn is always sweet the green beans are crisp. When I walked up to the entrance and saw the sign outside that said 咖哩牛扒 (curry beef), I started to think, "Oh great, another 港式餐廳 (HK style eatery), WTF would I come here?" Well, I was wrong. Thank God. Those places are a dime a dozen in the unofficial China-city of the lower mainland, otherwise known as Richmond. It was much different from an HK eatery. A casual west coast food kinda place with some pretty decent food. Decor is casual and minimal. It wasn't too busy when I got here on a Sat evening. It did get a bit busier an hour later but it wasn't hustle and bustle busy. I guess because it is a bit out of the way and in a bit of an isolated area where no-one visits often Prices are very reasonable for the food served. See my pics. To describe this small restaurant anything other than French Fusion with an Asian Flair would be an injustice as confusing as it sounds, on the other hand your taste buds will be tantalized continuously and you will be amazed with what's coming out of the kitchen. The interior of the restaurant is very pleasing and the staff is super friendly although the exterior makes you feel like your going to pick up a spring loaded widget from your local machine shop in the industrial district of practically any town across the land. I actually love it when I can't figure out everything about a restaurant until it starts to unfold before me. After looking over the menu and menu board I was somewhat confused and after talking with the host it became clear that I would just order a collage of food and let him figure out the bill, whether or not the three course special worked out was insignificant in my decision making. We started with the spicy calamari, it arrived covered in chopped red onions which seemed a little odd but actually fit very well, the calamari was fried crispy and the onions absorbed any residual grease and the spiciness was absolutely perfect I'd definitely get this dish again. As a second starter we tried the dungeon crab and avocado salad this was pretty special as well they definitely didn't skimp on the fresh picked crab. Entree's included duck with puréed carrots, mashed potatoes and a slice of corn still on the cobb - the duck breast was prepared rare which I loved but it was somewhat chewy and I would of loved it even more if the skin would have been fried more crispy but it wasn't a bad choice although I could of done well without the puréed carrots, in my opinion roasted baby carrots would have been much more fitting. We also ordered the lobster tail with seafood risotto, the lobster was perfectly executed, so tender and flavorful and the risotto was amazing there's no middle of the road in my opinion when it's comes to risotto this one was delicious. Definitely one of my favourite French cuisine restaurants! Surprisingly the boss and staffs there are Canto-speaker, which I feel a bit like home (they're also fluent in English). The service is good, the staff introduces my family and I a couple of good dishes, like the Black Cod. Out of all the dishes, their Fettuccini is my favourite (I'M LITERALLY DROOLING AS I'M TYPING THIS)... Not even my words or the pictures can do them justice, totally recommending ya'll to try it out. Very good value for 3 course meal. $55! Reasonable. Had fall off bone lamb, a generous dose of white wine mussels, tender duck breast, creamy seafood soup and delicious sourdough homemade bread. Nope not here, the food came out perfectly done and in a relatively timely manner. Wonderful. They were actually closing and opened the kitchen for my family. Everything was seasoned perfectly. Lobster risotto was on point. Grilled rack of pork cooked perfectly. Very reasonable prices. The chocolate soufflé was sublime! read more

Notes : waiter not very attentive, must be busy. Didn't get salad order right, Asked for vinegar twice and asked for cream for tea twice Didn't bring spoons for tea or asked if we wanted sugar. Combo a was soup or salad, chicken with mushroom sauce and coffee or tea or pop $13 Now once the food came it was all perfect. So, it was a rough start for our meal, but it ended up being almost perfect bliss. The main course was excellent. Couldn't have been better. Portion was large and price was moderate but the chicken was perfection. Juicy inside and lightly crunchy fried on the outside. Damn I think he makes some of the best cutlets in town! I can't eat here all the time, but for the special combo's, I'll make the exception and dine here when I can and when they're open. It can get busy these days as they're only open for certain days of the week. I think it's only Thurs to Sat for lunch hours. The main attraction is for the dinner meals which are exceptionally good to devour. I did drop it a notch from 5 to 4 stars, mainly just because of the rough start, but again, it was likely because it was busy and there was only one server. We came here without a reservation and they were fully booked for the night. The manager was nice enough to seat us anyways. We waited less than our quoted time. Their mains are quite pricey but you can offset it by getting a 3-course meal for $39. The only exception is the lamb chops with an additional $5. There's also pasta dishes which you can get for below $20. We got the 3-course meal with a seafood linguine. -Special of the day crab and avocado salad (4/5): Fresh crab meat on top of avocados with some garlic toast and salsa on the side. Each component of the dish was delicious and had us craving for more. -Prime Rib au jus (4/5): HUGE portion. It's not the best prime rib but it was good for what you pay for. It comes with mash potatoes and sweet potato puree. I loved the puree. The mash was ok but the greens were just boiled without any seasoning added. I left them on my plate. The blistered bell pepper was nice. I loved their horseradish. It didn't have that strong horseradish taste...it was very subtle. -Seafood Linguine (4/5): Linguine was a bit over al dente but I like my pasta that way. If you don't maybe you should mention that you like it al dente when ordering. The seafood was delicious. Seasoning was on point and the cook was perfect! Both are mains left us with ample room for dessert... but we had to. -Tiramisu cheesecake (2.5/5): A rather disappointing dish. They should have just stuck with cheesecake or Tiramisu. Was looking forward to eating here again as I didn't have lunch. I was surprised to see that they have increased their prices by almost 30% (website menu prices not updated). Granted, the food was still good but it is quite a steep increase in price. The food took awhile to arrive. I'm not complaining as I'd rather wait a bit and have my food done right, than have it arrive fast and be mediocre. But for those who are on a lunch rush, you may want to call ahead to order, but then no one was answering the phone! I ordered the spaghetti bolognese. This came out hot which I loved. The tomato sauce tasted like it was done from scratch and it tasted great although I'm not a fan of the ground beef. You can taste the tomato, garlic and onion. The pasta was cooked perfectly and well covered in sauce. Service was just okay... I didn't even get a water refill. And they don't allow you to sub the pasta to a different kind. They have a set lunch special for $18 which consists of a cream soup, NY steak with fries and your choice of drink. Overall, still a good place to eat but maybe not as frequently as you would like because of the price. read more
