    Hamburg Set Lunch
    Elton C.

I saw several people were talking about this restaurant and I was curious to try it so I went to this restaurant for lunch. The interior decorations were nicely arranged in Japanese style. The server arranged the table quickly and got my meal order without a long wait. There were many choices in the menu and I chose the hamburg on rice set lunch. It came with salad, an appetitzer and drink. I picked tofu salad and hot coffee. Besides the set, there was a self-serve area for unlimited miso soup, curry and rice. The taste was authentic especially the salad sauce tasted very nice. I refilled some more rice with curry and that was satisfying. The price was reasonable and I recommend this place in Richmond.

We sat in a separate section of the restaurant with 3 tables at the front. We ordered chicken wings, assorted tempura, miso black cod and an order of beef teriyaki that was not on the menu. The servings are very small for the prices charged. We found that the chicken wings (only 4 small wings) $9.50 were a bit dry. The tempura batter was not as crisp or crunchy as we've had. The miso black cod was a very small portion - maybe 4 oz. for $18.00. We did not feel that there was value for the money. The food was average and the prices were too high for the quality and amount of food received. We did not enjoy the anime that was playing and we were glad that we were not sitting in the main dining room. Overall, we feel that there are better options for a Japanese meal.

Sashimi and sushi were just ok, a bit below average. Tempura was decent. Chicken skewers were too salty. Fried rice was also ok, pyramid style presentation was good. Cheese cake was half frozen. Overall, food was below average. However, IKEMEN cafe event was excellent. It was a lot of fun and service was great. I will revisit IKEMEN cafe event if they offer in the future.

It's clear they do a lot of takeout, which is always a good sign. The decor is nothing fancy--just a simple, basic restaurant--but honestly, it doesn't matter once the food arrives. Service was immediate and friendly, and our food came out quickly. We ordered the Tokyo Sunrise roll, two tuna avocado hand rolls, and avocado tempura (we had to try it--and we're so glad we did!). Everything was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were amazing. The hand rolls practically melted in our mouths! Such a delicious experience--we'll definitely be back!

Unfortunately, things seem to have gone down hill a bit with lower quality fish (almost sinewy) and rolls that fall apart. I would almost liken quality to comparable with Sushi Garden or Samurai Sushi, and compared to how busy and bustling it had been in the past, there was only one table dining in during the peak lunch hour. Service was lackluster, with minimal eye contact and rude demeanor (the staff picked up the phone and took an order halfway through a sentence. Food is the basis of a restaurant, but service can do wonders to make or break a restaurant - today that was the case and it made me instantly regret tipping (yes I know I asked for it, on a take out order!) At nearly $40 for a lunch for one I'll take my business elsewhere.

They told us to join the google waitlist when we wanted to come in so we checked about an hour beforehand and there was no active waitlist online. We were seriously refreshing the screen as we were driving over to the restaurant. When we got to the restaurant they told us to join the waitlist and lo and behold there were already 5 people ahead of us!! The restaurant is small and the waiting area even smaller -- with 5 ahead of us we ended up waiting about an hour!! We got the dinner sets of soba/sushi, chirashi, and unagi. Everything tasted solid but seems small for the price. My little (who doesn't eat much) finished the whole meal set and said she was only 50% full and proceeded to eat snacks in the car after dinner. The staff spoke Japanese so you know it's pretty authentic but for the price and the wait, it could've delivered more.

However, Saku may have won me over with their sharable combo set. My friend and I came in for dinner last Wednesday. It was quite busy for a weekday and we waited around 30 minutes. I loved the interior of this place! It's clean, but warm toned, and stylish. We opted to share the Zenbu set (comes with variety of pork, chicken, cheese, seafood and veggie tempura) and realized we could get refillable rice, soup, and salad for both of us. This was awesome! I was pleasantly surprised by the chicken thigh. I normally always order pork katsu, but the chicken was tender and juicy. The scallop was huge and not rubbery at all! There was more than enough food for the both of us and we even both had leftovers for lunch the next day. We also ordered the lobster croquette, which was fun to try. Like any croquette, there was a lot of mixed ingredients apart from the lobster, but it was still tasty and fun. The staff were attentive at refilling items and were easy to flag down. This is definitely a place that I would return to again and again when I'm in the mood for Katsu.

Our server was very thorough in explaining the menu. The only part I wasn't too keen on was the timing for our food. The portions are fair for the price and the fish and uni was extremely fresh and melt in your mouth tender. The rice was perfectly cooked (each grain held its own, "Asian Al Dente"). I learnt that they're a new restaurant opened up by the same group as Raisu/Rajio/Kingyo, so I know that they wouldn't disappoint. We went on Valentines Day around 2:30pm and was fortunate enough to not have to wait too long (only around 10mins max)! The interior is super cute with a nostalgic diner feel. I wanted to order the 3-bowl set for lunch, but the selection for that day was kinda mid, so I opted for the bluefin feast bowl instead. I was NOT disappointed at all. The fish was so fresh and I feel like it was reasonably priced for all the fish that we got. When they said generous serving of tuna tartare, they were not lying. There was so much!!!!! Also really enjoyed all the different cuts of tuna; but my favourite was chu-toro for sure. Perfect balance between melt-in-your-mouth and having a bit of bite. It is a bit expensive, but they load up on the fish so I feel like it's worth the splurge meal once in awhile especially if you're missing Japan!
