I got the classic tendon ($14.45). I remember coming here once when it first opened at Brentwood and it was so good but damn they kinda fell off. there was a pool of sauce at the bottom and the rice soaked it up so it was way too salty. the tempura was really hard, especially the seaweed one. The seaweed was so tough I had to use force to rip it up and chew it. tempura batter felt dense as well and not light/airy. At least the presentation was nice
Came and ordered our usual which for me was the Vegetable Tendon, and for my daughter it was the Ebi Tendon. It was decent but honestly not as good as usual. My daughter is very sensitive to grease. She feels a bit sick to the stomach when she finds food to be too greasy. Such was the case on this visit. She usually loves the food at this restaurant but this time she said the food was greasier than it used to be, and she couldn't finish her meal. I am myself a bit sensitive to grease but I think, not to the same extreme as her so I was OK with my meal and I ate up everything. Felt bad for my daughter though. As a mother I always want to see my child well fed and it's never fun to see her leaving food behind cuz it's not agreeing with her stomach.
Every time I come to Metrotown, I always eat at Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba, and get the exact same item there (Zenbu Mazesoba.) BUT when I finally decided to give Tendon Kohaku a chance on a random sunny day, I ordered the Mentaiko Creamy Udon ($17.99), and I cannot go back to Kokoro!! The creamy and slightly salty flavour from the cream sauce & pollock roe is such an ingenious addictive combination, and yet every slurp is so light and not too rich!! I feel like the thickness of the udon was PERFECT, and the big bowl adds to its nice overall presentation. I cannot give enough compliments on how delicious Mentaiko Creamy Udon was. Service was nice. Nothing noteworthy on my 1st visit here. Overall, I *HIGHLY* Tendon Kohaku and will be coming back more frequently to try out other items off their menu. Price-wise it's okay and fairly reasonable, but majority of the main meals are in the $16 to $19 price range so bear that in mind when dining alone or with friends. Again, price-wise I do feel it's okay.
Came here for dinner with my cousin and I enjoyed the food. I had the dish with sashimi which was good cus it's not all fried. I also enjoyed the Hokkaido milk tea. Definitely would come back
The classic tendon was delicious and served with a good portion of rice already. I got the bottomless add-on of miso, cabbage, and rice but I never actually needed refills of those. So next time, I will just get the bowl itself. We also got the katsu curry udon with additional udon. It was tasty though a little salty. I will be coming back to try the other tendon options!
i use to rave about tendon kohaku but lately when i've gone (to multiple different locations) it wasnt as good as i remembers. the food was basic but good. the meal comes with the main dish you ordered and complimentary tea, miso soup, and a cabbage salad. you can place your order and pay on the tablet at your table. if you require refills, you can ask for an attendant via tablet.
Great food and service except that they couldn't accommodate my food allergy and instead of replacing items, they only offered to remove it. Other than that, bathrooms were in okay shape, going from good to worse as the night went on so staff should check those more frequently. A+ for having change tables in more than 1 stall. Didn't get to see the robot in action for us but that's fine. Servers were otherwise very attentive. Enjoyed that you could ask for tea refills and call server etc by the screen.
First time in this restaurant. A nice ambiance with a clean space. We ordered vegetarian tempura, chicken and soup. Nothing special about the vegetarian tempura chicken and soup. I would prefer other regular Japanese restaurant than this one. Service is okay .
A great place to get tempura! Many options, and ordering is easy via kiosk. I got the Anago Tendon since it had the most variety in one bowl! I must say, this tempura was better than places I tried in Tokyo. Crispy and light batter. Even the rice was delicious. My favorite was definitely the prawn tempura! I would go as far to even recommend the Ebi Tendon. The BEST! Each piece was tender, juicy, and sweet. GREAT SHRIMP TEMPURA.
I tried the original tempura meal and the Curry udon. There is a free upsize for the Curry udon and I got the XXL upsize. It is a good value and a lot of extra udon. The tempura is good, although it's a bit oily and quite heavy. I personally preferred the udon more. The Katsu here was cooked quite well and the Curry was flavorful. I also did not like how the menu shows a cabbage bowl and miso soup on the tempura sets but it doesn't actually come with either. You have to pay $2.99 for it (which is pretty cheap and it's unlimited), but it feels like false advertising. Another thing I found was that the sauces were lacking. The special sauce is basically soy sauce and very salty and the other sauce on the table was quite salty as well. It wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped. Some lemon or citrus sauce would have been nice. The ambiance is nice, it's clean, the service is fast and I like how there are tablets on the table to order. The green tea is pretty good as well.
--Edit Jan 2024-- We came back after all the rave about their new udon menu and how you can upgrade it to XXL noodls for free. I got the mentaiko udon with extra mentaiko and with XXL noodles. I was prepared to be able to take some home. Wow... it was super dissapointing. It felt like 1.5 pack of udon which makes me wonder is regular just a half pack of udon?? I was able to finish it all myself without taking any home. The mentaiko did not look double compared to all the foodies I follow. Perhaps they skimp out on regular customers. The taste was very mild. Mentaiko should taste sharper. The chicken karaage was ok. Small portions but the sauce was tasty. Previously I was really impressed with their tempura and the rice but this time although the tempura was still good, the rice was not the "individual grains with perfect texture" as it was before. Pretty dissappointed to what it has become now.
I am not a really tempura person! But love their tempura with their special sauce on top and their rice!!
The decor in the restaurant is very nice, when you walked into it, almost feel a zen like atmosphere. Great lighting & decor. There's even a display of rice grains! Service was good, menu actually has instruction on how to eat the Tendon. The food was good just beware that it comes with little protein, I think I only had one piece of chicken, their add on was very reasonable. Add on miso soup was only 85 cents & the miso was very tasty & they didn't skim on the miso paste either. Do check them out!

First time visit and loved it! We were seated promptly even though we were told there was a 20 min wait in the early afternoon on Sunday. We found that after putting our name on the kiosk wait list that if we hung around instead of leaving we were seated quicker! The vibe is contemporary but comfortable. This modern restaurant has a touch screen on each table. It would have been convenient to order this way but I had inquiries about allergy ingredients. Our two bowls came out pretty quick. My Mentaiko Cream udon was superb! The Sanuki noodles were fresh and had the right amount of chew. The sauce was perfectly balanced. Light and creamy sauce balanced with the right amount of seasonings. No broth just sauce, pollack roe, sea weed and green onions. Simple? Yes but I thought it was just delicious! If you're in the mood for a no-frills tasty tempura spot, this is the place! I ordered the spicy version of the Classic Tendon which included an assortment of shrimp, yam, green bean and mushroom along with rice and their special sauce. "Spicy" is not really spicy--you just get an enhanced red pepper flavor. Appreciated how clean the flavors of the dish were-it seemed to me that they used high quality oil and fresh ingredients. Service was friendly and speedy. The ambiance was very simple and clean-very consistent with the type of food and vibe they are going for. Pricing was reasonable as well. Recommend! read more
Was not expecting to find a delicious tempura / udon spot near a bustling Vancouver mall. The interior was spacious and bright and they have a cute robot collecting the used dishes and cups. For my meal, I ordered the classic option which included tempura prawns and veggies. Batter was light and not overly greasy and the sauce that was on the rice was delectable! Would love to try their carbonara udon another time. read more
Been here twice in 2 weeks now. Been meaning to try this place out since I've seen the photos on insta. But just never really got to it until now since I rarely hang out in Burnaby or Downtown. Been pretty pleased with the food so far. I like ordering their Sashimi Aimori Tendon with the spicy sauce on the side. Other than their fried chicken being either overly rubbery or once raw, I like the rest of it. And that time I had raw chicken the server was really nice and comp'd my dessert. I like their miso soup. Their chawamushi was so-so. Cheesecake was decent. I want to try their Hokkaido milk tea the next time I'm here. SN: 2nd time I came here, the lavs were abysmal. read more
Not what my family was expecting when coming here. This was basically a tempurarice bowl / udon soup restaurant which I was not really in the mood for when coming here. In order circumstances sure, I would probably be more down for it, but I wasn't that day. While everyone else chose the tempura bowls with either rice or udon, I just went with whatever they had that was close to at least a chirashi bowl which was their Kaisen Don. It was a fairly reasonable meal that I ended up scarfing down super quick. I was done before anyone else got started at my table. It was pretty good. But I think I'll try the tempura bowls next time since they're known for that. Service was good, friendly, and helpful. Atmosphere definitely has the Japanese culture vibe going with the wood blocky decor and all. I definitely should give this another try next time. Maybe I'll appreciate the food more once I try out their tempura. read more

I had the sashimi aimori tendon and it was delicious. Chose spicy which was medium spicy and just right. Prices reasonable for the amount of food. Added unlimited miso soup & cabbage salad for a small extra price. Clean restaurant, brightly lit with good servers. read more

This is a super belated post from @kohakutendonvancouver, as I went when it first opened! The wait was around 2 hours without reso so I'm sure it's much less busier now! This is at the Brentwood location :) I loved the interior design-- modern and chic. We love a clean and spacious restaurant !! In terms of food, the rice was a little too soggy for my preference. The soy sauce was not evenly dispersed so that also played an impact on how the overall bowl tasted. The tempura batter was quite heavy, but I enjoyed the sashimi! This combo blended quite nicely and lessened the heaviness of the entire meal. The bowls looked small, but we were super full from it! The drinks were the highlight IMO. Or maybe I just needed something sweet that day :) Overall, it was not bad, but I just had higher expectations from the hype it received when it first opened. I have been looking for an opportunity to come back! read more
This is the second Tendon Kohaku location that I have visited. The first one was at Madison Mall. I have to say this location (Station Square) has better food and services compared to the Madison Mall location. I came here with B and my friend C. C and I ordered the Anago Tendon while B ordered the Kaisen Don. The Anago Tendon was super delicious. It was not too oily. I liked how item was crispy. The Tendon sauce was very flavorful. Good portion size. I was full after the meal. I liked how they serve Genmai Cha Brown Rice Tea with the meal. Just the tea itself was tasty. The Anago Tendon came with a side of ginger and miso soup. I had the spicy sauce on the side. The spicy sauce itself was quite spicy. I gave it to B and he really enjoyed it. Service here was the only thing that I can say is a hit and miss. The server asked us if we wanted tea and water and then she forgot to bring it to us until I asked a different server. We did show up at 7 pm on a Wednesday and I have to say it was half full. People still continued to arrive in non dinner peak time. There are free parking at this location. I personally really enjoyed the meal. B and I will be back for sure. read more

I thought these were just okayyyy I'm not a huge fan of tempura, mainly cause it's too greasy but I thought I try it out anyways just because there's been so much hype. It was different in terms of dipping sauce but otherwise a very simple dish. The ebi tempura was a lot smaller than some other restaurants. read more
The wait wasnt too bad on a Friday night but whether you reserved or not, they ask you to wait outside to be seated. The place was spacious and clean. We had the udon and the rice with tempura. There are also add ons. The tempura was crunchy and offered some nicer vegetables than other Japanese joints. Overall, good value for dinner and a good choice for a no frills dinner. Food comes relatively quick too. read more

The food was not good but I got udon, my friends got the tempura which they are known for and they all enjoyed it. The udon lacked meat and was mainly just noodles and soup. Service was okay. The ceilings were nice and the seating was good. read more

I tried their zenbu mazsoba and kokoro ramen along with their takoyaki! The mazesoba is always a go-to for me but I loved the creamy ramen broth as well! read more
We came here for lunch. Food is great and staff is friendly! I love the fact that the place is spacious enough for to fit our baby stroller beside the table. We ordered their Kohaku tendon and made it a combo with a drink. I love the melon milk. It's not overly sweet but very strong melon flavor. The food is good portioned and I love the varieties of tempuras in the bowl. One disappointing part was that they won't to do any substitution for food allergies. I guess I could have orders a vegetarian bowl but I really want to try the squid and chicken tempuras as well since I never had a chicken tempera before. At the end, I asked them to put the shrimp tempuras in a separate bowl. read more
Tendon Kohaku basically specializes in tempura on rice and drizzled with a sweet "tendon sauce". Nothing wrong with the tempura, and it does come with the proper crispy batter, but also nothing really special here for the price. The presentation makes it look like they overfilled a bowl but that is of course just an optical illusion to make the portion look bigger than it really is. Nevertheless, there is a decently filling amount of rice underneath all that tempura. Orders come with a small bowl of soup to start. Pretty much everything had tempura prawns (which I have to avoid because of my gout), so I went with the vegetarian one, which has a vegan tendon sauce option (and which didn't really stand out for me; I just drizzled more regular tendon sauce and chili powder on it). Vegetarian Tendon ($16.45) Rice Kohaku Tendon Sauce, 1 Kabocha Pumpkin, 1 seaweed. 1 green Bean, 1 Shiitake Mushrooom, 1 Lotus Root, 1 Enoki Mushroom, 1 yam, 1 Baby Corn, 1 shishitou pepper For approximately the same price range, I found the nearby Japanese noodle place Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba (literally just at the other end of the small block) much more interesting and filling, especially with the optional extra cup of rice at the end. The Metrotown location is bright and feels spacious with the very high ceilings. Staff are polite and understated. read more
We came here on a weekday night and there was no wait for a spot. Parking is within the Station Square mall which can be quite busy at times. The tendon was crispy and had good flavour. I enjoyed that there was a variety between veggies and meat/seafood and it paired well with the rice. A great place for a comfy fried meal. read more

The restaurant is usually pretty busy, there's even a robot that helps out with cleaning. Service and food came fast and was done well. Tempura was all lightly fried not oily at all. The specialty drinks were in these cute cans. The beer pints are also in very tall glasses which was fun to drink from. The spicy sauce that you can choose has a good kick that doesn't last long. You can always spice or sauce it up more after. It's around $20 per bowl, $7 for a pint, and $6 for a milk tea. Solid food at a decent price. 8.2/10 read more

I love tendon kohaku, I've been there quite a few times. I love their spicy sauce! Today I ordered UberEats and I gotta say omg they charged me $11 for 4 pieces of tuna tataki...that's like $3/piece! Note to self and others...Never order the tataki for Uber. They give you more when you dine in. read more
We ordered to go but went inside the restaurant it it was nice. Clean and use of lots of white and light wood colors adding to a clean and modern feel to the spot. Person taking our order was friendly. The food was delicious! We took it back to our hotel only ten minutes away, but the tempura was still crispy. The spicy sauce was just right. Not too spicy and don't take away from the eating experience. I definitely would check out this spot if your in the area read more

Ordered the anago and sashimi tendon bowls. Although still crispy, it definitely was not fried made-to-order. Also the oil tasted very old/reused which ruined the flavor of the ingredients fried. Service and ambiance was nice but because of the disappointing oil taste, I probably wont return. read more
