I remember coming here once when it first opened at Brentwood and it was so good but damn they kinda fell off. there was a pool of sauce at the bottom and the rice soaked it up so it was way too salty. the tempura was really hard, especially the seaweed one. Came and ordered our usual which for me was the Vegetable Tendon, and for my daughter it was the Ebi Tendon. It was decent but honestly not as good as usual. My daughter is very sensitive to grease. She feels a bit sick to the stomach when she finds food to be too greasy. Such was the case on this visit. She usually loves the food at this restaurant but this time she said the food was greasier than it used to be, and she couldn't finish her meal. I am myself a bit sensitive to grease but I think, not to the same extreme as her so I was OK with my meal and I ate up everything. Felt bad for my daughter though. The classic tendon was delicious and served with a good portion of rice already. I got the bottomless add-on of miso, cabbage, and rice but I never actually needed refills of those. So next time, I will just get the bowl itself. We also got the katsu curry udon with additional udon. It was tasty though a little salty. Every time I come to Metrotown, I always eat at Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba, and get the exact same item there (Zenbu Mazesoba.) BUT when I finally decided to give Tendon Kohaku a chance on a random sunny day, I ordered the Mentaiko Creamy Udon ($17.99), and I cannot go back to Kokoro!! The creamy and slightly salty flavour from the cream sauce & pollock roe is such an ingenious addictive combination, and yet every slurp is so light and not too rich!! I feel like the thickness of the udon was PERFECT, and the big bowl adds to its nice overall presentation. I cannot give enough compliments on how delicious Mentaiko Creamy Udon was. Service was nice. Nothing noteworthy on my 1st visit here. Overall, I *HIGHLY* Tendon Kohaku and will be coming back more frequently to try out other items off their menu. Price-wise it's okay and fairly reasonable, but majority of the main meals are in the $16 to $19 price range so bear that in mind when dining alone or with friends. Other than that, bathrooms were in okay shape, going from good to worse as the night went on so staff should check those more frequently. A+ for having change tables in more than 1 stall. A great place to get tempura! Many options, and ordering is easy via kiosk. I got the Anago Tendon since it had the most variety in one bowl! I must say, this tempura was better than places I tried in Tokyo. Crispy and light batter. Even the rice was delicious. My favorite was definitely the prawn tempura! I tried the original tempura meal and the Curry udon. There is a free upsize for the Curry udon and I got the XXL upsize. It is a good value and a lot of extra udon. The tempura is good, although it's a bit oily and quite heavy. I personally preferred the udon more. The Katsu here was cooked quite well and the Curry was flavorful. I also did not like how the menu shows a cabbage bowl and miso soup on the tempura sets but it doesn't actually come with either. You have to pay $2.99 for it (which is pretty cheap and it's unlimited), but it feels like false advertising. Another thing I found was that the sauces were lacking. The special sauce is basically soy sauce and very salty and the other sauce on the table was quite salty as well. It wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped. Some lemon or citrus sauce would have been nice. The ambiance is nice, it's clean, the service is fast and I like how there are tablets on the table to order. I was able to finish it all myself without taking any home. The mentaiko did not look double compared to all the foodies I follow. Perhaps they skimp out on regular customers. I ordered the spicy version of the Classic Tendon which included an assortment of shrimp, yam, green bean and mushroom along with rice and their special sauce. "Spicy" is not really spicy--you just get an enhanced red pepper flavor. Appreciated how clean the flavors of the dish were-it seemed to me that they used high quality oil and fresh ingredients. Not what my family was expecting when coming here. This was basically a tempurarice bowl / udon soup restaurant which I was not really in the mood for when coming here. In order circumstances sure, I would probably be more down for it, but I wasn't that day. While everyone else chose the tempura bowls with either rice or udon, I just went with whatever they had that was close to at least a chirashi bowl which was their Kaisen Don. It was a fairly reasonable meal that I ended up scarfing down super quick. I was done before anyone else got started at my table. It was pretty good. But I think I'll try the tempura bowls next time since they're known for that. Service was good, friendly, and helpful. Atmosphere definitely has the Japanese culture vibe going with the wood blocky decor and all. I definitely should give this another try next time. This is at the Brentwood location :) I loved the interior design-- modern and chic. We love a clean and spacious restaurant !! In terms of food, the rice was a little too soggy for my preference. The soy sauce was not evenly dispersed so that also played an impact on how the overall bowl tasted. The tempura batter was quite heavy, but I enjoyed the sashimi! This combo blended quite nicely and lessened the heaviness of the entire meal. The bowls looked small, but we were super full from it! The drinks were the highlight IMO. This is the second Tendon Kohaku location that I have visited. The first one was at Madison Mall. I have to say this location (Station Square) has better food and services compared to the Madison Mall location. I came here with B and my friend C. C and I ordered the Anago Tendon while B ordered the Kaisen Don. The Anago Tendon was super delicious. It was not too oily. I liked how item was crispy. The Tendon sauce was very flavorful. Good portion size. I was full after the meal. I liked how they serve Genmai Cha Brown Rice Tea with the meal. Just the tea itself was tasty. The Anago Tendon came with a side of ginger and miso soup. I had the spicy sauce on the side. The spicy sauce itself was quite spicy. I gave it to B and he really enjoyed it. Service here was the only thing that I can say is a hit and miss. The server asked us if we wanted tea and water and then she forgot to bring it to us until I asked a different server. We did show up at 7 pm on a Wednesday and I have to say it was half full. The food is good portioned and I love the varieties of tempuras in the bowl. One disappointing part was that they won't to do any substitution for food allergies. I guess I could have orders a vegetarian bowl but I really want to try the squid and chicken tempuras as well since I never had a chicken tempera before. Tendon Kohaku basically specializes in tempura on rice and drizzled with a sweet "tendon sauce". Nothing wrong with the tempura, and it does come with the proper crispy batter, but also nothing really special here for the price. The presentation makes it look like they overfilled a bowl but that is of course just an optical illusion to make the portion look bigger than it really is. Nevertheless, there is a decently filling amount of rice underneath all that tempura. Orders come with a small bowl of soup to start. Pretty much everything had tempura prawns (which I have to avoid because of my gout), so I went with the vegetarian one, which has a vegan tendon sauce option (and which didn't really stand out for me; I just drizzled more regular tendon sauce and chili powder on it).
