Two separate visits to the Blue Canoe were the bookends of our four day holiday weekend trip to Steveston: it was the first and place we stopped, upon arrival, and right before departing to head home. Both times, we managed to grab a table (the same one, actually) during happy hour, ordered a cocktail each, took in the gorgeous views of the harbor, and basked in the unseasonably warm and sunny weather. It was a wonderful introduction, and denouement, to this quaint little storyb(r)ook town. Although we never ordered any food or snacks during either visit, we gazed upon several plates on their way to nearby tables with envious glances. Our servers, both times, were friendly and competent, although they both went missing for longer-than-usual periods of time, but not problematically so. Between the Maple Old Fashioned, two Back Porch Lemonades, and the Gin Martini that we ended up with spread across both visits, each drink was skillfully crafted, delicious, and reasonably priced. Neither of us felt Blue after leaving this Canoe, except for the wistful melancholy that washed over us, knowing our vacation was over. But we'll be back, even if we have to paddle upstream to get here!

Great atmosphere and wonderful service. It was my first time having a Caesar and I loved it. Excellent food!

Chocolate truffle cake, salted caramel cheesecake, and buttermilk & goat cheese blancmange + mixed berries

Needed some hang time with my guys and arranged for a Dine Out Vancouver dinner with three of my guy friends to celebrate one of their belated birthday. With a 3 course meal for $39.99, we were able to get a reservation fairly easily. I was the last to arrive and it took awhile before the server remembered to get me a glass of water. Since there were 4 entrees to choose from and 4 of us, we decided to share our 3 course meals family style. We ordered two of the pan seared scallops & prawns appies and two of the tuna tataki carpaccios. Apparently none of us felt like the roasted artichoke soup, haha. The pan seared scallops and prawns were a decent size and was tasty with 3 scallops and 2 prawns with each order. The tuna tataki carpaccio came with quite a few slices and a simple citrus salad. We got one of each entree - braised short rib, chef special seafood cioppino, miso glazed sablefish, and scallop & prawn linguine. The braised short rib was quite tender and we all thought the best entree of the night. The cioppino was okay and had a variety of seafood but the broth lacked a bit of rich flavour. The shrimp and scallop linguini was a good portion size and was a solid dish. The sablefish was quite small in size and was okay - risotto base lacked flavour as well as the fish. Could have used more miso flavour and risotto a sharper flavour cheese. We also got one of each dessert choice - salted caramel cheesecake, two of the buttermilk & goat cheese blancmange + mixed berries, and chocolate truffle cake. I'm not a fan of chocolate cake but had a bite of it and found it to be slightly dry and had zero truffle flavour. The blancmange was a nice portion but was missing a goat cheese flavour that I thought it would have. The salted caramel cheesecake was also nice and not completely smothered in caramel. Great value for 3 courses for $39.99 each. However, I left still a bit hungry and suggested going to bubble tea afterwards. Service was a bit slow - we had to ask for our bill twice and it took 15 minutes. It's a great location and with a decent price point so may be back, especially in the Summer.

Blackened Halibut with Mango Salsa

Was visiting Vancouver for business and stopped here for dinner with my colleagues. The location is amazing on the wharf. We ate outside right before sunset. I ordered the blackened halibut with mango salsa. This was delicious as I enjoyed the saffron cream sauce under the noodles. Was paired with a glass of red wine...delicious. The server was knowledgeable of the menu and provided good recommendations. Highly recommend meeting friends, family, and colleagues here.

My family and I all enjoyed our lunch here. We got Tuna tartare to share and it was delicious. Tuna was really fresh! My main dish surprised me with how good everything tasted. It was pan seared salmon. From the first glance the portion was quite small, but don't let that fool you, the salmon fillet was hefty and the potatoes, and roasted carrots were hidden underneath. The flavours just worked together so well. We also got a clam chowder that was a bit small, but filling. However the portion of fish and chips was huge. We all were full and satisfied in the end. Servers were friendly and not overly attentive. A small tip if in general you decide to go to any restaurants in Steveston area, be sure to first go and eat and then buy fish, shrimp at the Warf, because restaurants won't sit you if you are carrying a bag of seafood you just bought. (Might be common sense, but we didn't guess that, so had to carry fish back to the car)

After a day of whale watching we opted to enjoy late lunch at Blue Canoe for the location and view. The food and service were surprisingly positive experiences. We split the crab dip and calamari, and it was the freshest and best calamari we've had. We enjoyed the salmon entree which was served with a potato and Brie cake and broccolini. My daughter had the salmon burger which was served with a generous serving of French fries. The hubby had the shrimp flatbread which he enjoyed. We enjoyed beer and a house red blend that paired nicely with our food. The service was friendly and attentive. The scenery was beautiful.

It was a random decision to come here for lunch. Dine Out was happening so I had the menu. The weather was good so I was seated outside. The patio was still sheltered with plastic sheets so it was not overly cold. Plus there was heat lamp overhead. It was lunch with a view which was nice. Unfortunately it was also a bit noisy when other diners started speaking loudly. Think typical Chinese restaurants sound volume so I could basically hear the conversations going on. Not a great place for a quiet meal. Food wise. It was ok, not wow. Maybe it was my selection. The crab and lobster croquette was disappointing. Fried perfectly but the filling was more potato than crabmeat or lobster. It was pretty tiny too. Maybe the taste could be more pronounced if it was bigger. The seafood pappardelle was pretty tasty with plenty of seafood though I felt the sauce masked the natural sweetness and taste of the seafood. The chocolate truffle cake was very meh. I did not finish that. Took the leftover cake home but in the end I did not bother to eat it and it was chucked away. The service was excellent and they came around to top up the water and checked on you. I may go back again to try other stuff like the seafood chowder or cioppino.

One line review: Would give this 3.5 if that were an option. We spent the day in Steveston on a staycation and saw the menu for this place walking along fisherman's wharf. We decided to stay a little longer for dinner. It was a pleasant experience. We asked for a seat on their 'patio' (mostly enclosed, but with open windows); we had to wait about 25 minutes, but the walk along the wharf was beautiful, and the time passed quickly. We were seated in the patio on the side opposite the windows, but asked to move when a space opened up, providing maximum ventilation (COVID safety, you know). They were accommodating. We had just missed happy hour, but that was not a problem for us, as we were there specifically for the clambake. We ordered: - the Louisiana clambake (The mussels were excellent -- noticeably a cut above; everything else was good, though the scallops were smallish.) - a green salad (amazingly, not on the menu) - a fresh lemonade. The meal also came with fries and bread (part of the clambake?). Our total for the evening was $125. Value was so-so; this is fresh seafood, so we didn't expect it to be cheap, but the portions, while adequate, were not extraordinarily generous. If we return, we may go with their standard entrees, which looked good and might be a better value. Service was pleasant when we had their attention, but we didn't get checked on much. I find that this is often the case when we aren't ordering alcohol. Parking was free in the public lot. Bottom line: Good enough for a return engagement at some point.

West Coast Seafood Chowder ($14.50)

I had looked over the menu online and decided to stop by here to try their lobster bisque. Unfortunately, their online menu is not up-to-date so I ordered the west coast seafood chowder instead. We shared a half a dozen fresh oysters, shrimp tacos and two piece fish and chips. Our child ordered chicken tenders off the kids menus Food arrived fairly quickly. The chowder had one shrimp, one clam and one mussel mixed in with some smaller clams out of a can variety. The portion size was small for the price. I expected more seafood, but the chowder was alright. I think I make a better version at home. The oysters were fresh. No complaints there and they did not taste too fishy. The shrimp tacos had a bit of a spicy kick and was quite tasty. I found the fish and chips to be a bit greasy. The menu did not state what type of fish it was. I would guess haddock or cod. I am not good at telling the differences between fish. We did not ask our server beforehand what fish was served. The batter did stick to the fish, but I would see the oil seeping out of the batter as I cut into the fish. Service was good. View was nice. I would stop by for the view. Food was the standard West Coast fare.

We came on a weekend afternoon to check out their dineout ($45) menu. Service was a bit slow when we walked in as we waited to be seated. We opted for the outdoor seating which was a great choice because it was covered and heated! It overlooked the water and pier (which was quite mucky). We ordered the coconut mussels to share and the dineout menu (pan seared scallops, shrimp pasta, seafood bouillabaisse, chocolate cake, and panne cotta). Aside from the initial wait upon arrival, our server was attentive and friendly. She checked up on us and our water was topped up. Food is decent, but nothing spectacular. I liked that the coconut mussels had a slight hint of coconut. The flavour wasn't overpowering nor was the sauce too sweet, which can happen to some coconut-based dishes. The pan seared scallops were good. They were cooked properly and the salad on top was refreshing with a hint of acid. I love arugula and the addition of that added a note of pleasant bitter contrast. The shrimp pasta was quite cheesy but a little dry. I personally prefer saucier pastas. The seafood bouillabaisse lacked the strong saffron depth one would expect. I tasted a lot of orange/citrus flavour and would prefer a richer "bodier" broth. The chocolate cake was fairly sweet; perfect for those with a sweet tooth! The panna cotta was surprisingly delicious. I'm not a fan of panna cottas, but this one topped with the mixed berries was the perfect mix of tart and sweetness. The texture was a bit soft though. Overall, this is a nice local restaurant to visit for a beer or a lunch after a stroll in Steveston. Our bill was about $140 for 2 people, which isn't bad, but I personally think there are better options around for that price.

When in Steveston, Fish and Chips is something to try while you are enjoying the ocean breeze. Blue Canoe has one of the best patio restaurants in Steveston, so we chose to eat there, gladly we were able to get a table at the patio. We had; Tacos ($18.95) Oyster ($15.50) Calamari ($8.75) 2 pc Fish ($21.90) Linguine All dishes were delicious, the fish and chips were huge, and the fish on the taco was crispy yet not oily. The linguine was my favourite. It was so creamy and loaded with seafood on it; the oysters were attractive, we tasted two flavours which were both refreshing. For the calamari, nothing much special it's the same as others. Overall, the restaurants location is beautiful, foods were good, price is a little bit pricy but not that bad, the staff sometimes takes long to check on us, we waited for about 20 minutes for someone to ask for our orders. Even so, I still recommend this restaurant for the lovely view and good food.

And while there are no shortage of seafood restaurants serving fresh crab on the Steveston waterfront, we wanted to give The Crab King a fair shake. I'm so glad that we did! My wife ordered a King Crab for herself which, after tearing it literally limb-from-limb, eventually declared it to be tied for her favorite boiled crab dish anywhere! High praise coming from such a consummate crustacean connoisseur! For myself and our son, an order of fish and chips, and the grilled chicken sandwich rounded out our order, both of which were crispy, tasty and delicious. Regarding the fish and chips, they appeared to be tempura-battered, and I'm still not 100% sure what type of fish it was. It may have been cod, but it seemed more like catfish, but either way, it was tender, juicy, flaky and delicious. No complaints here! More than anything, though, the employees here went out of their way to make our experience enjoyable. Our toddler son, who is normally extremely well-behaved in restaurants, was having a bit of a fuss here and there. Without prompting, the servers brought us a little radio to play music for him, as well as a couple of toys to play with, one of them being a wind-up truck that they gave to him to take home! He loved it there, and still plays with it at home! They even played peek-a-boo with him from behind the counter, soliciting laughs and giggles, for the better part of 15 minutes! That sort of customer service is nearly impossible to find, and should be praised and cherished wherever it is found! Whatever the past may have held for this restaurant, the Crab King is an entirely new animal now, serving up fresh seafood by uncommonly wonderful employees, in a fantastic floating location. They even offer to cook spot prawns and other seafood purchased from the boats docked at the nearby waterfront marketplace, for a modest fee. With all these things going for it, there's no doubt who wears the crown of Crab King in Steveston Harbor!

We waited for a few minutes for someone to notice we were there, and were immediately seated. It's a nice looking place - very classic whites, and feels like a fine dining restaurant. We decided to try the following: - Beef Carpaccio: Good. Maybe a bit light on the meat, as it was buried by the arugula and pickled shallots, so seemed unbalanced, but overall tasted great - Seafood Linguini: Mixed. Linguini was good. Scallops were really good and tender. Mussels were tiny. Red snapper was tough and dry. As a dish, it was OK, but could be better. Seafood is seasonal, so I'd think they would be better off rotating what seafood is used. - LuLu Island: OK. Same issue as the linguine. Prawns were fine. Mussels tiny. Red snapper wasn't enjoyable. Broth had flavour, but didn't come out very hot. Service was pleasant but slow. I only saw one server and one busser, so not enough staff to handle 6 or 7 tables they had. Starter came n reasonable time, but main dishes seemed to take over 20min. Took awhile to get our plates cleared, and probably 15+ minutes to get the bill. Overall, it was OK. Look no further than here for super fresh seafood and house made drinks…read more I read about fisherman Frank's story a couple of weeks ago and how the food truck came to be. I like supporting local businesses and food is an easy way to do that since we need to eat. It was closed the first time I went. Good thing the hours were posted on the food truck. So I came back again and got to try the special. Grilled snapper with Greek and orzo salad. The snapper was so fresh. It was sweet and tender. The Greek salad was also good, no limp-looking vegs. Crunchy and juicy cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. The tomato was bursting with juice every time I stabbed it with the fork. I gave up and just popped it into my mouth. Yums. The street corn was also sweet and juicy with a bit of char. Love the toppings on it. There was a promo for street corn and drink ($8). I had the ginger citrus iced tea. The iced tea was lightly sweetened and I found it just right for my taste. The ginger and citrus flavor was very subtle, not overpowering. I like that they made it in house. None of those powder or box tea. I will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu. Friendly staff too. Prices are a bit on the high side for a food truck but the quality justified it. Nothing worse than paying more for mediocre food.
