I had been wanting to eat at Dee Dee's for awhile and darn it, I wish I had sooner. I got the Pad Ka Pow and mango & sticky rice for dessert. I feel Yelp peer pressure to make this 5 stars, but I am not going to. The laab was good, really good. The best ever? No. I think that belongs to Night + Market in LA or Larb Thai, a hole in the wall in El Cerito, CA. I wished that the mint was chopped into the meat. I did like that there was extra sauce at the bottom of the container. The sticky rice was good and the price was great. As for the spice, it was noticeable but not overwhelming. It is a dry chili heat, so not the kind that burns now, it comes on a little later. Som Tom or green papaya salad was good, but there were carrot shreds in it. The portion was large. Too many peanuts for me. The salty, fishy, sweet was a good balance. What did I learn today? The pan they fry the egg in is a masterpiece. I was delightfully surprised by Dee Dee. We tried the Pad Ka Prow, Om Gai, and Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango. Additionally, we ordered two Thai teas. Everything was good. Upon ordering we were told there would be a 30 minute wait for food, but that they could text us when it was ready. This was no big deal as the bar next door had live music out on their patio. The menu included Thai Coffee, but when we tried to order it they stated that they were still figuring out how to make coffee, so we ended up ordering the tea instead. I adore Thai Tea (as well as coffee) and Dee Dee's was no exception. I could happily slam two of those bad boys in a 20 minutes span before blissfully drifting off into a diabetic comma. *Fair warning if you've never had Thai coffee or tea before, it's made with sweetened condensed milk and can be quite sugary* They asked how hot we wanted the food and told us that by default everything is Thai spicy. We were a bit anxious about the heat level, but being the good Texas hot sauce lovers that we are, we told them to go for it. Spice varies so much by restaurant that it's hard to gauge what you're actually going to get and Thai food can be some of the spiciest in the world. The "Thai Spicy" at Tuk Tuk nearly burned my face off (that papaya salad I ate purely out of principle)(I will not be defeated! Muahahaha), at Dee Dee -- not so much. When our food arrived (a fare bit faster than the estimated 30 minutes -- yay), we found it pleasantly spicy, but well balanced. The fresh basil and chili in the Pad Ka Prow added such a great flavor. The moisture and fat from the meat were complimented with the perfect amount of rice underneath. The fried egg was lovely and ran when we cut into it's center adding another later of unctuousness, while the cucumber slices were a cool clean counterpoint. The Om Gai was slightly tamer, less spicy, but also much healthier. It consisted of a fragrant broth served with chicken and herbs. It had very clean light flavors that made me wish I had tasted it before the fattier spicier Pad Ka Prow. We were also given a rice cake to dip into the broth, but we didn't eat it as we wanted to save valuable stomach real estate for dessert. The dessert was ready about 10 minutes after our entrees (great timing). When done right, mango and sweet sticky rice is one of my favorite desserts in the world. Dee Dee did it justice. The sweet coconut rice was like a warm gooey hug for my mouth. The mango was ripe and provided a juicy tartness to the dish. I could eat this every day. So good. Skip the Pad Kapow. As the novelty of the location and aesthetic wears off you realize you're eating overpriced minced meat and rice. Absolutely nothing special. Not even that tasty in fact. I went here a few weeks ago and haven't stopped thinking about it. This trailer is tucked away on the east side and I've passed it tons of times with no clue what I was missing out on. Tbh, I stumbled upon it looking for a different food trailer entirely, but I am so happy I gave it a try. I wanted something substantial with lots of veggies before my workout, so I got the Tofu Stir Fry. The portion size was great- I could only eat a third (saved the rest for post-workout). The Thai iced tea was also super great; highly recommend ordering it to sip on while you wait for your food. The wait wasn't long (about 15 mins), but I did go at a weird time when most people aren't eating. Based on other reviews, it looks like the wait can be quite long if its during a busy time. The two people I interacted with were really friendly. I believe that they're a husband and wife team. The cook was really nice, and I really enjoyed reading online about how she grew up on a farm in Thailand and is now bringing the family recipes to Austin. Never in a million years did I think I would fall in love with food cooked and served from a food truck. My first experience buying food from a vehicle was when I was 7 and I bought an artificial flavored and colored Neapolitan ice cream sandwiched between two slices of white bread. This was in Asia. Fast forward til today ... there I was lining up for Thai Isaan * style food in Austin from a little food truck parked in a lot pretty much in the middle of nowhere as far as I was concerned. Hubby got the tofu stir fry . We also got the Thai pork skewers with sticky rice and the mango sticky rice - a very traditional Thai dessert. Omg the food was flabbergastingly DEELicious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The husband and wife team behind this food truck must be magical wizards/ witches in the kitchen to conjure up such wickedly good food in that tiny space! The mango sticky rice is so good I got two! And they are big portions, one is enough for 2-4 people. I went when the truck wasn't even open yet! Can you tell how much I wanted that sticky rice and even though they hadn't open yet people had already started to wait! They have plenty of seating under shade and around it. There are also 2 other trucks that I saw parked near them. Parking is a little tricky it is all street parking or in the neighborhood. The boxes for my mango sticky rice had forks in them and where in cute carryout boxes. Which was great cause after I was heading to a concert and munching on my leftovers! This place is legit - traditional Thai food full with freshness and flavor. Their menu is limited but you probably won't find the items in other run-of-the-mill Thai places. We tried their Om Gai and Som Tum. Both were full of flavor. The chicken in Om Gai was cooked just right, the soup was full of flavors - right mix of spice and sweetness, dill/basil and cucumber added nice mix to the flavors. The Som Tum was awesome as well - nice mix of vegetables in flavorful spicy Thai sauce. The Mango Rice was OK - nothing special but not bad either. This place is a must try if you are in Austin. Tips: They only take online pre-orders. Make sure you order 30-40 min before you arrive for pickup. There is a nice seating area with string lights if you want to hang around and eat. I wasn't familiar with the intricacies of Northern Thai cuisine versus the standard America Thai fare I'm familiar with. You don't need to know the subtle yet distinctive flavors of Northern Thai (think dill, cucumber, chili spice) to enjoy it. Here's the rundown: Pad Ka Pow | Get this first. Medium spice but you'll feel it and need the cucumber to pace yourself. Laab Moo | Next level spice, minced pork. If you love spicy, start here. Om Gai | Think soup or a broth rice dish. The dill and fennel(?) are a refreshing and warming combination. Thai Iced Tea | Try this. Condensed coconut milk and a wonderful flavor. It's a southern sweet Asian tea. Best thing? Didn't expect to find a good Thai street food in Austin. I always order drunken noodle when I go to any Thai place, but this place did not have the traditional Thai food that I usually get. After waiting for a bit, we received our food; it was very nicely packaged. It was sweltering hot, and we sat at the one of the wooden tables in front of the truck. The pad Kaprow was delicious with grilled pork, egg, and fried kale. We came here thinking it'd be a light lunch, but portion was fairly large and filling. The Mango sticky rice was delicious. It was my first time trying, and I was initially a little opposed to the idea of putting condensed milk(?) on rice. It surprisingly went very well together and I enjoyed the last bit of my rice and mango. For some dang good and quick Thai food go to Dee Dee! The menu is straightforward and concise but all of the options are good and mostly the classics. Plus, you get a pretty good amount of food for the price you are paying. We got the pad krapow, one of my favorites, and it was perfectly balanced, spicy, and hit all of the buttons. It's cooked to order and you'll get it piping hot. If you don't want to eat outside you can head into the bar on the same premises and eat in there. read more

Before I go super into depth, I just wanted to point out all the Yelp misspellings there are of DeeDee's dishes :D enough of each to make me triple check the real names!! Yelpers, y'all crack me up! And yes, I have too much time on my hands. Just Pad, Pad kapow, Pad Kra Pow, Pad Ka Mow, Pad Ka Prow, Pad Kaprow, just kaprow, Larb Moo, Laarb Moo, and finally Laab Moore, but congrats on only one alternate version: Om Ga. Yay for everyone getting Som Tum right!! Now on for the real stuff: As someone with a southern Vietnamese heritage, I am amazed by the cultural overlap. The use of dill in a soupy-rice dish (com canh), squash, ground pork, basil, fish sauce, all of these ingredients in the Pad Ka Pow and Om Gai just bring me back to my mother's homemade cooking. Nothing like some good ol' momma food. For those of you without Asian mom (or dad) cooks at home, stop on by! Price-wise I'd say it's maybe $1 or $2 more than I'd like, especially given the ingredients, but I'm still happy and full. That being said, total compliments on the crispiness of the basil on the Pad Ka Pow. Definitely a fun little texture! Spicy level, I personally don't think was anywhere unmanageable or sweat-inducing :D I'll ramp up the chilis next time! I think for a food truck they are on a great start with the makings of a fantastic gig. It sounds like the booming business might be a bit overloaded. Congrats in that you're getting good publicity and happy tummies, but be careful not to lose customer loyalty with how busy it's getting.
