We enjoyed our time at SABG! All of these bars along Manchaca are fun, and we love coming over this way! If you're a 49ers fan, this is YOUR SPOT! Nothing but 49ers jerseys and flags and the game on everywhere! Lots of covered seating, great deck, love all the decor, and all of it in great condition. The outdoor area off the deck has some areas for kids to play, but it's best for older kids. Seesaws are metal and fun, but there is no fence to keep those kiddos corralled in which I know some people look for. Parking was limited, and there were kids playing games and football in the parking lot which made me a little nervous, and they were playing with footballs that I could see hitting a car. The food trucks that night were limited, but the Mediterranean food truck was good! Nice falafel, a solid chicken shawarma salad, and hand dipped onion rings and mozzarella sticks that the kiddos definitely enjoyed. It looks like they have a burger truck too, but it was not open that night. The game volume on high, nice patrons, solid layout for the space they have, nicely maintained, friendly staff that make you feel like you've come there for years, all adds up to another great experience on Manchaca Rd! read more

South Austin Beer Garden is unpretentious and chill. They have a wrap around deck that's great to grab a drink on a nice day. They also have a back space with even more picnic tables next to the food truck. The bartender outside didn't get to us quickly, even when it wasn't busy. He was really focused on a few people, but when we walked past the inside bar, the bartender there was very friendly, greeted us and served us quickly. We had a couple beers and didn't stay too long, but you'll never have to worry about finding seating here. read more

SABG is a fun hangout located on Menchaca Rd. I came here for a retirement party so it is a great location to host events. We had two large picnic tables reserved and they provided us with drink tickets for the bar. There are a variety of food trucks located on the property. The bar had a variety of drink options and the staff was efficient. I tried several different drinks on the menu including Fez Margarita, Mexican Martini, Frozen and Watermelon Margarita. I also ordered tacos at a local food truck. The night we were there they were having music bingo and live music from a local DJ which was so much fun. Some people in our party won prizes from participating in the bingo. Overall a fun location with indoor and outdoor spaces with a variety of food and drink options. This is a cool area in a bizarre location in South Austin (located between a residential area and a JW Kingdom Hall). We decided to get out of downtown and went to the South Austin area and ended up here. It was a beautiful weekday afternoon so there were only a handful of people there. The bartender was great and helped us find brews that we liked. Note - there are food trucks on site but there was only one open since it was a weekday, so don't arrive hungry. Note: this is a SMOKING FRIENDLY location. I am not personally a smoker, so I don't typically frequent places that allow smoking. However, this is not the whole reason for the rating given. I've been to SABG a couple times and had very different experiences. The first time I went, it was great. Just a random off-hour time during a week day. Walk right up to the bar and order a drink or order from your table. Super casual. Great patio for good weather. TVs, some games / music available, cool. However, my most recent time I went on NFL Sunday to enjoy the nice weather and watch the Cowboys game. Other times I had been, I hadn't really noticed that there was anyone smoking here - this time was different. There are ashtrays at all tables (inside and out) and they sell packs of cigarettes as well as beers. Personally I don't love being at a place with cigarette smoke, but I wanted to watch the game (which was on and easy to see with all the TVs). Well you can't really get away from the smoke and I'd get a big waft in my face every couple minutes from the surrounding tables. Smoking aside, I did very much enjoy that it was easy to find a place to sit, easy to watch the game, and the beers were good & brought out quickly if you ordered on mobile. We also ordered a snack (for some reason I thought there would be more food options, but that is not the case at this location now - go grab something from the trucks across the street). Ordered the "chips and queso" which turned out to be from the BBQ food truck onsite. Well, first of all this was not chips and queso, but rather stale Fritos and fake nacho cheese (that honestly tasted like it was spoiled). $9 wasted. Don't trust the Yelp photo of "chips and queso" from 3 years ago... Overall, I think the NFL game really contributed to the cigarette smoke with more patrons than usual. Came out here recently to meet friends for our association meeting. I've been to Moontower just north of here on Manshack so I was a bit confused at first as to which beer garden we were visiting. South Austin Beer Garden has a bit better setup in my opinion and we were able to get seated quickly in the spacious dining area. They have a good selection of beers and cocktails, all available through a phone app for ordering. Drinks are ferried out to you by staff (the QR codes have your table number embedded in the order to eliminate confusion). Really enjoyed my Hi Sign Blueberry pint and there were quite a few other craft brews to try if I didn't The food trucks were not open, probably due to the timing of our arrival, but I will be back to try those out sometime soon. Finally made it to SABG! I had heard really good things about this place but just never managed to make it a priority/stand alone visit. Book club was hosting here so I was looking forward to the relaxing outdoor vibes. The extra parking lot is a huge feature and I'm sure it fills up on the weekends but on a Wednesday night there was plenty of parking. Overall the frozen margarita was the standout- not as good as Zelick's but strong & delicious. The bartender was nice and service was quick. I didn't eat but the tacos seemed to be a long wait for every order even though it wasn't busy so be sure to get your order in early. Everyone liked their tacos but portion size looked small to me. IMO there was not really anything special about the atmosphere - I think the inside "locals hangout" was the main vibe. The outdoor seating was much smaller than I expected and I wasn't impressed. It is off of a busy road so I would prefer something set back like Texas Keeper Cidery or Treaty Oak that has a prettier/more romantic vibe. Music was too loud for a book discussion even though we were outside. Overall, Armadillo Den has a cooler atmosphere but parking is severely limited so SABG is a good option for parking and quick drinks. read more

For first date vibes, this place is a winner. For a good bar experience, you might feel cut short. I met a match here, and honestly, it was outstanding considering the day and time we went. On a Thursday night, there was just enough happening to distract people's attention but it was also quiet enough and open enough for us to have privacy and do some serious talking and heavy petting with no one seeing. I loved this. With table games to distract people, I pawed on that man all over the place and people left us alone. In the bar, on the deck, in the parking lot. Catch my drift? It got a little spicy. The downside: they short you on drinks. Full of ice, extremely scarce on the liquor, and they didn't even have half and half or cream to make a White Russian. They had an imitation milk substitute. I've never seen this before in my life, people. And the amount of ice was offensive. Three swallows and my drink was gone. And it wasn't cheap. When you're on a date, you don't care about the details of things too much. You just want people to leave you alone, and for that, this place gets 5 stars. The place has a roadhouse atmosphere, most of the staff looked like they were operating a biker bar which at first made me feel a little intimidated, especially when they ignored me. The gentleman at the bar acted like whatever paperwork he was doing was more important than paying customers. After getting my beer I walked out to the patio to find a place to sit. I was greeted by what I assume was the owner (but again the biker appearance threw me off). He was polite, welcomed me and my party and let me know that he was there if we needed any help. The seating was comfortable and fun. There was a food truck where we ordered nachos. They were good. After returning for my second beer I recognized that the beer was flat. I alerted the staff, they gave me another but it was still bad. I suspect the lines need to be cleaned she apologized said she would take it off my bill, I chose another beer and moved on. Later when lying she charged me for the bad beer anyway, so confused. Anyway, overall I was disappointed with their beer selection, and disappointed with the staff attentiveness to customers. Was enticed to come to this place due to the beer selection as well as how it looks like there's many options for outdoor seating. My girlfriend and I both approached the bar in different locations, no one else was ordering, she reported that a male bartender saw her but didn't say anything to her while looking straight over her head to welcome a dude nearby to order. My friend is as sweet as pie and patient so she just came over to me where I was asking a female bartender about beer prices. I felt as though the server was very annoyed that I was asking about prices which has been an unfortunate trend these days. If it's so off putting that some of us still budget because we're going to be prepared when shit hits the fan- just write out a price list so we don't have to have a good ol' fashioned exchange like one person enjoying their job and another person excited to discover a quaint place to hang. She made me a margarita, me and friend went outside to sit down. First thing I noticed was a huge bright warehouse light coming off a food truck onto the seating area. My solution for this was to sit facing the restrooms in order to avoid the light. Not to be knit-picky, I think there were others options for seating but the majority of the chairs were those ones that you have to slide way back or else you have to work to hunch at the front of them anchoring your feet as to not forcefully slide back. As I begin drinking my $7.50 small margarita that was $2 off, I didn't taste a lick of alcohol. I understand that doesn't mean there wasn't any in it but it tasted weak. I walked over to a bartender outside to kindly mention that and he just stared at me with wide eyes as though he was offended, instead of offering to make another one or offer something else. However, when I specifically asked if he knew of a place that specialized in margaritas, he did pull out the old customer service etiquette that this place had been lacking and dropped a name of a nearby tequila bar. Honestly the unwelcoming vibe of the servers made it feel exclusive to certain types and I'm just too old for that sort of _____. My Friends and I came here to watch a UFC event and really appreciated our time here. We were greeted by plenty of TV's and they were all playing the fights, which is not always the case with every establishment, but we appreciate it. We also really enjoyed the ordering system of scanning the QR code on the table and ordering drinks. Recently checked out SABG for a friend's birthday which was super convenient for a large group. My friend was able to reserve a table and even get food and drink tickets for the guests. I haven't been here in the summer time, but during the winter most of the area is covered up and has heating lamps to stay warm. This strip of Menchaca has several converted houses/roadhouses that have become popular over the past few years. SABG is one of the more recent additions. The pros: multiple local and regional beers on tap, a nice covered patio with picnic tables, good prices for drinks, TVs for watching sports, and friendly, efficient staff. Also, it's dog-friendly! The cons: the inside is small, the outdoor seating is sparse beyond the covered patio area, and they allow smoking, which makes it hard to avoid cigarette smoke outside. Big negative for me. We've tried the BBQ food truck on a couple of occasions and they have some good offerings. They play music through the sound system when sports aren't the focus, which makes a pleasant atmosphere to sit and chat with friends. As some reviewers have noted, it isn't set up like a beer garden, more like a roadhouse, but overall it's a pretty chill place to hang out with friends for an hour or two. read more

Ok, I want to give the 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding down for the blatantly misleading name. This feels a lot more like a sports bar with some outdoor space than a "beer garden." When I think "beer garden," I picture something with more ambiance (for example plants, string lights, communal tables, music maybe). Instead, here you have a patio with many TVs blaring the game and a dark, concrete/rock picnic area. Yes they have some string lights... on the outer edges of the parking lot #doinitwrong. SABG is a rustic theme beer garden with 60 draft beers and cocktails. A big 3,000 sqft deck area, featuring a huge outdoor sitting, 5-6 TV's, Musical box and a food truck. The place still needs Improvement due to very little parking, not enough lighting and also they need to update their website/hours. Great place for big groups, good dogs and a few pints of beer. If anything Moontower is just a minute down the street. Also a church is right next to it, when you're done doing sins. read more

I've known both Davey and Ryan since their Dirty Dog days and am very sad about leaving this review, but feel it is necessary since what happened can happen to anyone. While I'm certainly not a regular, I have been in several times since they opened and, until last week, had no issues ever. After an early gig last weekend, my drummer and I stopped in to just unwind and have a drink. We ordered a Michelob High Life and a lemon drop martini on the rocks (made with Tito's). We got the correct beer, but I was given a very bland lemon drop shot, and we were charged $25 for the 2 drinks! After swallowing hard on that price, we paid, finished our drinks and went elsewhere. I messaged both Davey and Ryan personally, explaining how disappointed I was at getting gouged, and neither responded to me, which makes me now believe that a few of their bartenders have no problem doing this if you're not someone they recognize. So, unless you're a "regular", don't be surprised if you get taken advantage of by their staff. Sad to say, but I probably won't go back. read more

This review is mostly for the food. As of June 2020 the food truck on site is HBQ bbq which doesn't seem to have its own Yelp page - which is a serious problem because it needs some serious love! You know the standards for bbq are high in this town, and HBQ holds its own very well for being virtually unknown. My favorite part of a bbq meal isn't actually the meat, it's the sides, so I was excited to see the selection! I ordered a little of everything (well, not everything, but about half the menu... enough that the cook asked if it were for one or two people when he saw a tiny girl come to pick up all of it!) I ordered what I thought would be a chicken salad sandwich, but maybe I ordered wrong or maybe their idea of "chicken salad" is different than mine, because what I got was a typical chicken sandwich - sliced chicken, slaw and what seemed to be mild hot sauce on a hearty roll. Despite the initial disappointment, it wasn't too bad for a chicken sandwich. It was huge! A good deal for the price. However, I didn't want to fill up on it, so I was glad when my friend's son expressed interest in the other half of it. More room for the sides! The hatch creamed corn was amazing - other friends raved about it too. It had a bit of a kick after a few bites, but nothing a spice wimp like myself couldn't handle. The mac and cheese was billed as "sriracha mac and cheese" but was not spicy. It was average in a good way, slightly on the not-so-cheesy end, that would be a disappointment to have alone as a meal, but definitely enjoyable as a side dish. The cucumber salad was surprisingly good. I didn't expect much. Who gets excited about cucumbers? I ordered it out of curiosity and so I could feel good about eating some token vegetables. It turned out to be a real sleeper hit! It was a bit like eating pickles, toned-down enough that I could eat a whole cup of them without being overpowered by brine. When they loaded the "loaded potato salad" they weren't messing around! It had a lot of cheddar cheese and bacon, and some green onion. Apparently they rotate their pie selection, and this time they had peanut butter ice box pie. The cook asked how much whipped cream I wanted on it and I told him not to hold back! It was obviously delicious. Obviously. You're probably wondering about the meats, because this is a bbq truck. I was with a large group, so I got to hear everyone's review of just about everything on the menu, and everyone was impressed. I know they tried brisket, pulled pork, ribs, mac and cheese loaded with meat and queso, and queso as a dip. All servings were a pretty decent size for their price. The queso was the only unusual thing - it was more like movie-theatre nacho cheese that most Texans wouldn't call queso. However, apparently once it was mixed with brisket, it was good, and I saw several servings of it get finished off. Like I said, I was with a big group, and the venue accommodated is well. Drinks seemed satisfactory. (I only had water.) I think I heard live music coming from inside. Kids enjoyed the small playground. (And to tell, the truth, at the end of the night, I went and climbed on it too.) Picnic tables, shade coverings, parking bathrooms and all those important amenities were good. I wish this place was closer in to town, but if it were, that might ruin what they've got going. Despite the long drive south, I'll be likely to return! Update: I checked their menu and they have two chicken sandwiches. It looks like I ordered the wrong one. No wonder I was disappointed, but that's good news for the rest of y'all to know that their chicken sandwich is a decent take on a typical chicken sandwich. I came here to watch UFC 248 with my friends and had a great time. It was rather cold that day but we opted to sit outside so we can have prime view to the TV screen. They brought out heaters for the outdoor seating so there was some warmth to be had. The drinks were a bit on the expensive side but they're showing the fight with no cover so it was worth it. What I really enjoyed was the food trucks out back. The food was amazing! I had the BBQ plate and the cream corn and mac & cheese were so delicious!!! The BBQ itself was great of course. The atmosphere was really fun and I definitely would come back to watch the next UFC fight. read more

This is a great place to grab a beer and watch whatever sports game is on. They have tons of beers / liquor to pick from and games like checkers and jenga scattered at some tables. Food trucks in the back and bathrooms that were pretty clean. Staff was friendly. It's dog friendly and there's bowls for water out. My husband and I stopped in yesterday for a drink and to check this place out. We heard about it from a person in our community FB page. SABG sits right off of Manchaca road. They had limited parking lot parking but we parked up the hill in a dirt area. No worries there. It is not too far from Moontower either. SABG has a huge patio and boasts to be 3,000 sq ft. You can bring your dogs, watch TV, and drink under umbrellas while sitting on picnic tables. Their selection includes beers, ciders, and cocktails.
