Overall my experience here was awesome. I accidentally walked into the Thai place next door lol so it's not the first door but the second door that says DC Vegan. There is upstairs, outside and downstairs seating. We sat upstairs. The menu is simple and straightforward. ( it is typically the same except during pride weekend, which they have a limited menu to accommodate the large group celebrating) We sat upstairs. We didn't know that downstairs was the actual " upscale" restaurant and upstairs was more of the causal part of the restaurant. We ordered our food at the counter and picked our seats. I love that the menu tells you what has soy in it. We started with the apps and they were delicious Sooo you gotta get the focaccia bread as in app. When I say delicious it's really tasty. The bread also have garlic and melted. Utter on it to compliment the nut cheese. The Mariana sauce topped it off. This was my dish. The trumpet mushroom calamari was tasty as well. It was coated beautifully and even looked like the real deal. It lacked a little seasoning but tasted good with the sauce. Now the cauliflower wings with the bbq sauce was yum yum. I loved that they used a wing sauce that you would actually put on chicken (vegan of course) Some parts can remind you of boneless chicken but it definitely taste like cauliflower. Which was fine. It was enough sauce on each wing. Tip: Now if you are sitting upstairs near the cheese display I would suggest ordering your apps and get up and order your meals because the meals came out maybe 5 mins after we got our apps. So we felt like we had to rush so that the food doesn't get cold. ( and with vegan food you want to eat it hot trust me ) as always do what you want. Now I ordered the artichoke sandwich. When I bit inside it the artichoke was firm. Now it is one of those foods you have to chew for a while. So I took all the artichoke off and ate it separately. It probably would've been better for me to just order the app of fried artichoke rather than the sandwich. I literally left whole sandwich behind. This was my least favorite. It wasn't my thing. As for the jackfruit Philly my partner said it was cool. There is a ghost kitchen restaurant called MUSH and they use fried mushrooms for their Philly and he preferred that one better. Fast casual vegan food is always a good thing and this place is certainly worth a stop. It's not the best vegan food out there, but it's not trying to be. It's just really good, quick, vegan comfort food in a cute location. We ordered at the counter and the food came out in about 5 mins and it was very good. The Chick'n parm was a bit on the pricy side, but not so bad for DC and quite tasty. If I were local I'd probably stop here once every week or two. read more

Had a solid experience at DC Vegan's Botanical Bar when I went for dinner with some friends. The decor is very interesting, the vibe inside the botanical bar is great, and the service was excellent. The only drawbacks to this meal pertained to some of the entrees. We made a reservation well in advance and were promptly seated when we arrived. We started with the meatballs and were delighted with this offering. The texture was reminiscent of actual meatballs and the walnut, easily detectable, provided tasty flavor and good consistency. Would definitely get these next time. The marinara sauce they were served with was also excellent and came in handy during our meal. Our entrees were brought pretty soon after the appetizer and we were pleasantly surprised by how fast the service was. I ordered the Tofu Marsala. This was served with greens, whipped potatoes (mashed), and the Marsala sauce itself. The tofu itself was bland and lacking in character. If the tofu had been seared and allowed to develop some color, it would have at least been able to gain some flavor there. Unfortunately, this was tofu at its most basic. The mushrooms that came as part of the Marsala sauce somewhat offset the blandness of the dish, but the sauce itself was super mild and had no distinctive flavor; it seemed to serve only as a means of keeping the tofu moist. The greens were also steamed and plated; even salt and pepper would have improved the dish considerably. The excellent hot sauce we got on the side only somewhat redeemed the dish. My friend ordered the Beans and Greens and was similarly disappointed by the total lack of flavor in the dish. The dish reminded me of food one would serve to someone without teeth. There was one mushy texture that was not offset by anything. This dish could really have used some crispy breadcrumbs on top of it to improve its overall quality. The side salad that came with the dish was quite nice, and the vinaigrette was light and delicious. Another friend ordered the Chick'n Piccata, which was a cutlet served with asparagus and whipped potatoes. This dish was good; the cutlet had enough flavor and texture to make it worth being eaten. The fries we ordered on the side were also a highlight; super well cooked and seasoned without sacrificing thickness; some of the best fries I've had in DC. DC Vegan can do a lot more to flavor their dishes and elevate them with simple ingredients that justify the price point. Picked up lunch. So excited to have a vegan spot near the office I was visiting!!! Ordered the hoagie. In hindsight I probably should have gotten one of the mock meat options, but thought that would be too heavy. The hoagie is good-- just not as hearty as I would have hoped, it's all veggies, light on filling protein. The peanut butter cookie, however... HOLY MOLY! #1, huge. #2, decadent. So glad I got it! Came for dinner with an out-of-town friend who is vegan, it wasn't busy at all at 6:30 on a Wednesday. Based on prices online I was expecting a fancier place, but it's very casual, order at the counter and they bring it out to you. I had the cacio e pepe and the bottled ginger beer, my friend had the chik'n club. She thought her sandwich was delicious (I didn't try it) but it looked pretty good, there was faux bacon as well as the chik'n patty and some green sauce (not sure what kind) and greens on it. The cacio e pepe was also very good, but I'd call it more like a faux alfredo than a cacio e pepe as there was no cheese or pepper flavor, but the cashew cream makes for just a rich and creamy sauce. I would order it again but for anyone who has had cacio e pepe... it's not really that. It came with a side salad of field greens and tomatoes with a viniagrette on it, I should have asked if they had other options as I don't personally care for viniagrette but that's on me. The portion was a good size for a single meal, I probably could have brought a little home were I not taking the train but I ate it all. I liked the bottled ginger beer as well, it was a new-to-me brand (and I've tried a ton of ginger beers) but very good, not super sweet but lots of kick. It is so good to find a vegan place that has soy free options. My bf has been trying to eat more vegetarian or vegan as a diet, but so many places only do tofu or impossible meat as the vegan option, which is not soy free.. which he has an allergy to. Enter DC Vegan and their many soy free options. Firstly the interior of the Botanical Bar is beautiful. Everything was served super fast, and we enjoyed the 'Oysters' Rockefeller and the main items we ordered. We got a chocolate budino on the house because it was my bf's birthday and the owner was very nice to offer that to us. My two little issues may be that 1) our food didn't feel warm. It just felt room temp and like it was just a cut and serve for the frittata I got without properly being warmed up And 2) I know it's vegan food but it was a bit pricey for what it was for my frittata. Something's not right! My first time coming in at least 8 months. Downstairs is now permanently closed! Upstairs is so casual for the prices make no sense! The vibes is all wrong! This place used to be so cool and now it looks at if no one knows what's going on. I have been here too many times to count but this seems awkward. I used to go to the botanic bar w/ the original crew and even came w/o Sarge leadership and I will say it is lacking. Took away the bar to give me what is already in DC one more yoga spot! Thanks I did not mind the price point at all cool restaurant down stairs but the aesthetic and service is lacking. I will provide an update in the food! Update Food was great! Had a delicious entree dinner but didn't like the bowl item from the lunch menu. The food was excellent, offers a large variety of vegan and vegan & gluten free options as well. There are desserts too, but they have limited gluten free options. The space was clean and updated, but not wheelchair friendly, from what I could tell. It can also accommodate large parties, there was one there with about 20 people during my visit. There are stairs that take you to the entrance of the building. I would inquire if you need a ramp entrance. I recommend this place if you're looking for a great vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free meal. They also sell gift cards. read more

Any expectations I may have had were blown away. Whether it's the gorgeous botanical bar, beautifully garnished cocktails or the food it's hard to go wrong here. I dropped by with my friend for a night cap on a Saturday night. By the time we got there the hustle and bustle of the dining room had died down and we were able to enjoy a cocktail at the bar in a relaxed environment. We ate some of the loaded potatoes (so good) and sipped on our drinks (also so good) which was the perfect way to end the night. No crazy crowds, no one over served and a nice comfortable seat is really all I need (and is also quite difficult to find on a Saturday night!) First and foremost I was SOOO excited to try this place being that they won best vegan restaurant in DC. We ordered the Cauliflower wings, Lasagna, Foccasia, Caccio de Pepe, And the calimari.. cauliflower wings were great minus the bigger pieces because the inside still had the raw dredge inside making it inedible. Sauce was delicious I will say. The focaccia was also pretty good.. the lasagna was not good, the sauce tasted like a can :/ and the layers of the lasagna were cold inside.. the Caccio de Pepe were made with super thick Udon noodles and personally lacked flavor, the server was also clueless to the menu and wasn't attentive at all. The ambiance was quiet, no music playing in the background.. also the prices for everything was more on the expensive side (21-28$ for apps) (28-45$ for entrees.... I suppose I'm the minority in that when this place bills itself as a vegan deli, I'm totally used to the vegan part but kind of uncomfortable with the term deli, just on an aesthetic level. And it does look like a deli. On their menu, I steered clear of some of the fake meat things, which don't really appeal to me and tend to be overly processed, so I got the fried artichoke sandwich instead. It was a lovely presentation and the taste was definitely the sort of thing where you take a bite and stop immediately to savor it. The roll was soft, the garnishes tangy, and a piece of some sort of vegan cheese finished things off. I suspect this was the imported Italian vegan cheese, which they have on sale in the deli, which frankly seemed better than the status quo for vegan cheese. Adding a side salad was a good decision for me. They had an interesting beverage selection and pastries available as well. Hear me out... Even if you are not a vegan or vegetarian, there is no way not to fall in love with this place, its food, and baked goods; it's that good!! It is set as a deli but does not be fooled; the service was impeccable. There were things I could not try due to temporary dietary restrictions, but what we tried, men, oh men. Delicious. I highly recommend the "calamari" made out of mushrooms, 15/10 super crispy yet tender and very well seasoned, accompanied by a homemade marinara sauce together; it was perfection. Stopped in on a whim while in the area. Felt adventurous and got the Jackfruit Cheesesteak with a cashew cheese sauce. The sandwich was excellent. The texture of the steak was a perfect match for traditional shredded steak, including a bit of that crispy char flavors around the edges. I didn't pick up any flavor resembling cheese, but the sauce had a strong mustard flavor that worked great with the sweetness from the peppers. The fries were just fries, but they were crispy and had some good salt flavor. I was expecting to still be hungry after the dish, as I enjoy hearty meals and vegan dishes have often left me wanting more in the past. I have only had the best experiences at DC Vegan. This business is owned by two Cleveland natives that moved to DC and opened up a sister restaurant to Cleveland Vegan. They have so much experience in the catering and restaurant industry, and their business is so well run from food coming out quickly to an incredibly friendly staff and front of house. When my mom came into town from Cleveland, it was a no brainer to bring her to DC Vegan to support some fellow Clevelanders. We arrived for dinner Saturday night, and the Botanical Bar downstairs was packed. The upstairs area where DC Vegan is located had plenty of seating for us so we ate there, and were still able to order drinks from the Botanical Bar. My mom enjoyed the Chicken Parm sandwich and I had the Chicken Cutlet Club. My mom was filled with nostalgia as the chicken parm tasted just as she remembered a chicken parm to taste. She enjoyed her meal with a glass of Chardonnay and could not have been happier. My Chicken Club was fantastic. The sandwich bread was soft yet held together. The vegan bacon's taste was spot on and I loved how it was crispy without being too hard or tough. The sauce on that sandwich was a pesto aioli and it was so good I could have used a little more. I really enjoyed how much basil came through. The chicken cutlet was a great texture and I liked that it provided heartiness without too much chicken flavor. Sometimes the faux meats freak me out, and this was a great balance of meaty yet still clearly vegan. I loved my mocktail from Botanical Bar. It was dressed with green sugar crystals. It was light and definitely not just a lame fancy lemonade. Their mocktails are unique and worth the price splurge, which I appreciate as I am laying off the booze. Finally we finished the meal with plate sized cookies sent in from Vegan Treats in Pennsylvania. The chocolate chip cookie was chewy and just like your favorite childhood cookie. The peanut butter cookie was definitely the star of the show. It was so soft with the right balance of sweet and salty. I could eat that cookie all day long!! I loved our DC Vegan experience. It is a treasure to be able to take my mom to dinner and bring her such joy. I also appreciate that the owner came by to check on the tables and truly make everyone feel like they are family. Although we were just in search of some vegan baked goods this place appeared to have so much more than that. It looked like a sit down vegan restaurant. We walked straight up to the display case with baked goods in it since that was the reason we came. Everything looked so good that I opted for two pieces of cake instead of just one. I got a slice of carrot cake and Oreo cheesecake and they were both to die for. A little on the pricier side (carrot cake-12 dollars and cheesecake -10) but honestly I am happy to pay that when it comes to supporting vegan businesses. I haven't had vegan meatballs that were HOMEMADE and not some kind of Beyond meat replacement in ages... until I got takeout from DC Vegan last night, yum. We ordered 4 dishes to split between three of us (we were all starving), so I got to sample quite a few things. The eggplant parm sandwich was perfectly seasoned and cooked, although the sub roll was just ok. The aforementioned meatballs on bucatini were incredibly good and I wish I had leftovers for breakfast now... The grilled tofu dish with vegetables was also perfectly seasoned and cooked. The fried "chicken" caeser salad was a winner too. There wasn't a single dish I wouldn't recommend! We ordered delivery because one of us has a baby, so it was just easier, but I'm excited to check out the restaurant in person some time. read more

I have mixed reviews of DC Vegan. I've come for both the evening menu and the brunch menu, and hands down, I'd only come for the evening/dinner in the future. I love the fact they have all vegan food, the vibe is also amazing, it's a gorgeous restaurant, especially at night. However, the food is just too expensive for the quantities you're recipe Omg. Especially brunch, me and friend ordered two meals that we split, and we're still hungry for more. We ended up having to buy a third meal to split to finally feel satisfied and ended up with an astronomical bill for it. Kelly greeted us with a warm smile as we came in from a drizzly DC morning. The establishment was cute and clean, with great seating, boasting a great window seat, benches, outdoor patio, and street patio. We came in for breakfast and got the sausage and egg English muffin & breakfast wrap. The muffin was larger than your standard English muffin, very fluffy and tender, great portion of just egg, cheese, and two sausage patties. The wrap was in a gluten free tortilla, and had a great mix of egg, sausage, potato and cheese. They were out of pico de gallo, which was supposed to accompany the wrap. Since the wrap was so dense, it really did need that freshness of the pico. We did get some buffalo hot sauce, which was great! Overall it was a great experience! My only minimal critique would be that the food was all just a tad over-salted. We tend to always have to salt our food at other establishments, so it was a surprise. Absolutely love DC Vegan. I've been here for an event, and I've had an offsite event catered from here, and both times the service really went above and beyond. When I was there, it was for a small event, and not only were the staff great about accommodating and being patient with my group, but when we asked them to reduce the volume of the music so we could have our event discussion, they immediately complied. For the catering event, I asked if I could do a Monday pickup (since it was a Monday event) and not only did they agree, in spite of being closed on Mondays, but i was literally the only catering order they even had that day, so they opened just for me, which is an unreal level of restaurant courteousness. The upstaids deli space is roomy and cheery, and the downstairs Botanical Bar is gorgeous and sexy. Ideal for a date, but also really nice and chill for pretty much any dining situation. For now the stars are mostly for ambiance and service. The food has been a little more hit or miss with me, but when it's a hit, it HITS. The vegan macaroni and cheese that I ordered for the catered event was unbelievably delicious. The beet burger sliders are good, would have been better if hot, but I appreciated the spicy kick. I was a little meh on the balsamic glazed tofu, but that was the most popular item at the catered event, so I'm clearly an outlier there. The lemon dill potato salad was less popular but I personally enjoyed how light and refreshing that was, with nice bright flavors. The chesapeake fritters I had during my group event, on the other hand, were a little TOO lemony. Good coleslaw though, and my partner enjoyed his meatball sub. When I first began cooking and eating vegan dishes over a year ago, DC Vegan was one of the restaurants I enjoyed going to. It was nice sitting outside since you're up high on the patio and it's a bit more intimate. The staff were friendly and overall it was a nice vibe there. The only reason I gave DC Vegan four stars is that my sister's order took way too long. I pretty much finished my entire meal before she got hers. I walked in to let them know my sister didn't get her meal yet and the woman didn't seem in a rush to get it. Once the woman did grab the food, she walked right past me and went outside without letting me know it was my sister's. It was just weird since I stood in the place a little longer not knowing she finally gave my sister her food. Overall, the food was good, but the service could have been slightly better. read more
