Chaia Tacos is a fast casual, farm-to-taco restaurant that highlights seasonal vegetables. They promised that I wouldn't miss the meat, and truly delivered on that. We got the Taco Trio (Roasted Butternut Squash, Braised Mushroom, and Chipotle Sweet Potato Hash), of which my favorite was butternut squash but I enjoyed the flavors of all three. Also got the Brussels Sprouts Quesadilla, which came with a delightful jalapeño salsa. I'm not one to go out of my way for vegetarian/vegan food but It looked worth a shot. Walking into this place is an aesthetic beauty. Very tastefully done and like the open kitchen concept. When it comes to vegetarian/vegan options, the thing that usually lacks is flavor but my goodness Chaia is not lacking in the flavor department. Chaia is one of my favorite fast casual vegetarian restaurants. The Georgetown location is relatively easy to access if you're biking/walking/using public transportation. The service is spot on. I use the kiosk to order, and my meal is prepared relatively quickly. The staff are always kind as well. Unfortunately, this place did not meet my expectations. I have been eyeing this place for years, but never went and finally decided to go. I guess I was expecting more elevated flavors or tastes. I purposely got all vegetarian tacos the mushroom one (shockingly maybe my favorite), the potato kale one, and the sweet potato one. Very quickly after eating the potato kale one my stomach got upset I think because of the cheese. Even the sweet potato one had cheese, and my stomach did not feel the best. I also primarily am vegetarian so I just expected more depth of flavors, especially since it is Mexican food. Perhaps I overhyped this place in my head, but I've had better vegetarian tacos elsewhere and even making my own at home. I had an amazing lunch at Chaia! This business is very vegan friendly and even has cocktails for those that are 21+. Chaia has a good amount of seating for a small group. You can order at the register or use their touchpad screen. It is very easy to veganize their menu items. They have vegan cheese you can purchase at a 50 cent upcharge to make their nachos instantly vegan. Their nachos were HUGE! I ate the whole portion size for lunch and skipped dinner. Good on the verge of very good. Ordering: two self order kiosks on the back right hand side of the store. Interface is fairly intuitive but some items have options which can throw you off. I had trouble with the credit card reader so a nice worker rang me up manually. I ordered two tacos combo but it seems like it was the same price as buying a single taco two times. The tacos come with a single tortilla (I'm used to the double up on the west coast) which means you can do the classic trick of turning one taco into two. More importantly, it makes the tacos harder to eat since the ingredient invariably piece the soft shell. On to the food: Mushroom Taco -- big pieces of mushrooms with feta. The salsa was delicate. Enjoyed this but wished it had a little kick. Kale + Potato Taco -- green salsa better than the red. Pickled onion was quite nice. I liked this one more than the mushroom. Hibiscus Tea -- apparently house made and quite tasty with a hint of honey and mint. Smaller size than I expected. Only three tables downstairs but there are a few more upstairs. Be sure to grab napkins before you go up there as there are none of the second level. Decent tacos but hard to judge them against my California standards. read more

After a day of roaming the District and surrounding states, I needed solid takeout for my evening of prestige TV in my comfortable hotel room. After all, it was mid May and that means 'sweeps' -- or, at least, it used to mean that back when people watched TV all at the same time. In any event, I needed food 'to go' that would compliment the closing episodes of one of my favorite programs. This also meant the clock was ticking. Seeing as though I'd had luck in the neighborhood for lunch, I went back to Georgetown. This time I went for my go-to: tacos. I changed it up by going for vegetarian fare. I walked in to find a surprisingly long line in a cramped space. The good I took from this was that I chose wisely. The line gave me time to come up with an ordering plan that was only slightly derailed by a couple of ladies who tried to cut. Once I educated/blessed them*, they learned the error of their ways and I was back in business. I was thrown off my game, however, and forgot to order a drink. For that, I had to wait in line all over again. I contemplated another blessing. My lionshare of takeout in hand, I made it back to my room with minutes to spare before I fell into the world of peak TV. I almost forgot to pay attention to the show, though. The food was *that* good. I ordered a trio of tacos and a quesadilla. All gluten-free. All vegetarian. All delicious. The braised mushroom with feta, red salsa and cilantro was a meaty, flavorful and textured delight. The creamy kale and potato with pepper jack, green salsa and pickled red onion was an unusual experience that blended the right amount of kick with a substantive bite. By the time I got to the scrambled egg and black bean taco (what you were thinking + jalapeno, cilantro, queso fresco, and hot salsa), I was pretty full. That just meant I took an intermission with my hibiscus tea (completely worth getting back in line for). For Act III & IV of my show, I tore into the brussels sprout quesadilla. It shouldn't work... it doesn't make sense... but it was fantastic: corn tortilla with brussel sprouts, melty jack cheese, hot oil, and jalapeno salsa. I struggled with the last bites, not out of disdain but from diminished gut capacity. Unprocessed, vegetarian food prepared with heart and intention never tasted so good. There's a reason why almost 900 people have raved about this place. Prices are a little higher than you might want to spend for a taco but, unfortunately, in America if you want healthy, you have to pay for it. Located in Georgetown near a ton of cute shops and restaurants, this classy minimalist restaurant was tucked in a small alleyway and a hidden gem. My friend and I wanted a quick bite, so I got 3 of the tacos (mushroom, sweet potato, and acorn squash; $15) which could be easily made vegan by subbing the cheese with vegan cheese ($0.50 add on for the entire order). They all tasted quite good especially the acorn squash taco. My friend Just got the ginger kombucha which she downed quickly. Visited Chaia this past weekend and was quite impressed with their offerings. Serving vegetarian and vegan tacos and enchiladas, Chaia has produced consistently great food all three times I've visited. I ordered the mushroom enchiladas, one friend ordered the nachos, and another friend ordered the taco trio. All of us were thrilled by our respective meals and pleased to have come. The mushroom enchiladas exemplified the ideal enchilada; the ratio of cheese to sauce to filling was excellent and the tortillas managed to retain their shape and structure while still absorbing some of the sauce. The mushrooms themselves were great, simply seasoned but tasty nonetheless. The portion, served with a delightful rice, is also large enough that you'll be able to take the dish home for a second round. 5/5, easily. However, I am rating this restaurant 3-stars because the food has no wow factor to me. I ordered the iced hibiscus tea. It was about 4.25 and comes in a little 8 ounce cup(possibly 6) and I tasted no hibiscus but was overwhelmed with a flavor of honey. I also ordered the creamy kale tacos and they were delicious, as they always are. However, I also wanted to try something different on the menu. I mean...being plant-based and gluten-free, it's almost impossible to NOT love Chaia. Not only are their tacos delicious for vegetarian / gluten-free tacos, but they're also just delicious tacos period -- what they lack in meat they 100% make up for in flavor and texture combinations, and I am free to enjoy whatever I want without fear of cross-contamination. They have a variety of tacos, some of which change seasonally, but, honestly, every single one is absolutely delicious in its own way. I would personally recommend getting a taco trio and sampling three different types, but you really can't go wrong with any of their menu options. I've tried almost every taco they have, but my favorites will always be the braised mushroom and chipotle sweet potato hash -- not only do both of these tacos have a great vegan option (i.e., just remove the feta), but they're each packed with flavor from their respective sauces. Before becoming dairy free, I also fell in love with their creamy kale and potato, and I'm a little disappointed that there isn't a vegan option available for that one (...yet...unless Chaia entertains the pleas of this dairy-free fan). Their sides are also phenomenal -- their black beans are straightforward, but delicious and creamy, and their green rice packs a huge flavor punch. The herb pesto is absolutely amazing, and the pepitas offer the perfect bit of crunch. Their tortilla chips are also solid, but it's hard to beat their sauces -- the tahini black bean is rich, smooth, and delicious, and their habanero pepita has a bit of a kick and enough calories to power a car but it's 100% worth it. They also have a lovely kale salad if you're looking for something on the lighter side. The last time I was there, they said that they didn't have a way to make it vegan...but their online menu now says a vegan option is available? So fingers crossed that that's true -- I'm sure I'll make my way over there again pretty soon so I can verify whether they've made that change. Of course, Chaia isn't special only because of their deliciously flavorful yet healthy (and dietary-restriction-friendly) foods. They also have an unbeatable ambiance, with their cute, minimalistic decor accented by plants and tons of natural lighting. If you visit too late to enjoy the sunshine, there are some super cute hanging lanterns in the second-floor's seating area to set the mood instead. It's a lovely, aesthetically appealing spot for a casual dinner. And if you'd rather enjoy the sunshine directly on your skin instead, you can always take your meal to-go and hang out at the Georgetown Waterfront Park, conveniently located just a block away. read more
