We had a family dinner at Das Ethiopian, and it was delicious and so much fun. We had a reservation, and we were seated upstairs. It was quiet and spacious up there. Our waitress was super friendly! She helped us figure out how much food to order. The food is served family style and all the dishes are placed on a big platter that is lined with injera. You use the injera to scoop up the sauces and meats. You don't need utensils. Everything was so good. We devoured it. They have a dessert menu but it is mainly Italian style desserts. This may seem like an over exaggeration but words cannot express just how much I loved my experience dining at Das Ethiopian. I came with my mom because we love Ethiopian food and we heard only good things about this location. Five stars really isn't enough to give this restaurant in a rating because the experience was just that great. We got outdoor seating just outside which was perfect because the weather was beautiful. It wasn't too hot and it wasn't too cold. It was in the early evening so you could see everyone coming home from work and embracing the lull of relaxation, which only enhanced the ambiance of the beautifully designed restaurant. We got a meat and vegetable combo platter which was delicious. When the food came, the waitress explained what everything was and what was in it. Just hearing her describe the food made my mouth water. Our platter was delicious and had the perfect combination of flavors. I enjoyed every bite. We got two different types of Tibs, we enjoyed the egg, lentils, greens, and beets. Every flavor blended well with each other, the spices were perfectly cooked into each part of the dish, and the injera bread was delicious and worked nicely with everything. We brought the baby so we needed less spicy and spicy for the parents. We picked the mixed chicken-beef combo and beef tibs. Injira was fresh and the portions just enough. Service was lovely. Georgetown often fails to live up to its hype: small sidewalks, no public transit, terrible traffic, and often just okay yet overpriced food. There are a few redeeming qualities, however: the waterfront, pretty historic houses, and, of course, Das! I ordered the vegetarian sampler and loved everything that came with it. It was so well seasoned and tasty, plus the injera was nice and fluffy. The staff were attentive and friendly and seemed to want to make sure we enjoyed the experience. I have tried a few Ethiopian restaurants in DC and I think this one is my favorite. I attribute it to excellent quality and expert flavor curation. The vegetarian platter was delicious and perfect for two people. The Asa Dullet was amazing too. All of the flavors were unique and mixed together so well it was heavenly. Although rich it was not overly oily or dense and it did not leave you with an over indulgent feeling. The gluten free injera was also quite good! The food is tasty and served up hot and fast, but the service is a little odd. There are a lot of employees running around but none stay longer than a few seconds at your table- we had to ask to give them our order after 20 minutes. Our server was taking our menus out of our hands as we spoke to her and then left before we could ask a question. It was really odd. But the food was delicious. It's a cultural dining experience so you don't get any forks and you enjoy each dish with a fresh spongy Ethiopian bread roll to pick up the food with. So yummy! And the dessert menu is huge and we were able to try a bunch of things out. They also provided a complimentary limoncello cheesecake for my friend's birthday and sang for her & that was so cute! Full bar menu and not vegetarian (which is totally different from the Ethiopian restaurants we have at home). So we ordered the Das Combination Vegetarian Entree Sampler as our base, and added the House Salad, which was a nice combination of beets, potatoes & green beans, as well as the Beef Alicha and Lamb Tibs. Everything on the plate was delicious. I was starting to get worried that I was going to fill up on the injera, when our server reappeared with forks! (Only so we could enjoy the rest of the food!). I love Ethiopian food, and I'm always eager to check our restaurants on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, so this is the perfect confluence of interests! I had a nice time at this restaurant and think it deserves its spot on the list: this Georgetown restaurant is upscale without being pretentious. The high Georgetown prices are not justified completely ($51 for the platter is outrageously high!) but the taste is very good. The service was very nice--the only issue was that it took almost five minutes to be seated because no one was at the host stand. This pattern remained true throughout lunch service; no one ever occupied that spot. I started with a house salad that I really enjoyed: bright, perfectly cooked vegetables, and very tasty injera underneath. The platter was good, just overpriced. The place feels intimate with a small bar and tables all around with hanging lights. There is a second floor with seating as well and a restroom but seemed to be closed that day for dining. We both got the Das Combination vegetarian entree sampler ($26). This was a great way to try all the items and the injera flat bread was refilled as needed. I had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Servers were attentive. They have a small outdoor patio area for dining too in the warmer months. This was the first time we had tried Ethiopian food and will say I was a great experience. We decided to order the Vegeterian Sambusa, as a starter, and 3 other main courses to share. I could say there are similarities to our Mexican food because their food is very flavorful, as they use different spices, and their version of what it looks like a rolled up "tortilla". They also served two different sauces on the side for us to use as needed. We also had the pleasant experience of having to share all the house specialties we selected. These were served on a big plate from which we all were grabbing the food with our rolled bread/ tortilla. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the noise level was for the most part low. Das is the place to go if you want to try Ethiopian for the first time in an uspcale setting. If the weather is nice their outdoor seating is lovely. Shared plates and very hands-oriented for utensils so consider that if you're bringing a first date here it's going to get messy but I think it's a lovely way to truly share a meal. *Disclaimer: I am usually very generous with my reviews (check my account for reviews), but given that this place advertises Michelin ratings and how good Ethiopian food in DC generally is, I had very high standards for this place. I love Ethiopian food - I have tried half a dozen Ethiopian restaurants in the DC area, and the food and experience has always been excellent. So I had high expectations when I came here with a friend during our trip to Georgetown. However, we both ended up being extremely disappointed with the experience. Some of the dishes were flavorful, but the serving sizes were pretty small. Serving size alone is not something I would be upset about - the worst part was that the food was obviously not fresh. The injeera (bread) was cold, and did not taste fermented like it's supposed to be. All the food in general was cold, or at best, lukewarm. The cabbage and carrot dish tasted off - it tasted like it was at least 3-4 days old. And I'm sure all the food in general was made several days ago. The meat dishes were tough and not appetizing - chicken drumsticks are supposed to be fall-off-the-bone, but the chicken here was very firm. Not only was the food underwhelming, but it was overpriced as well. We got both the veggie sampler entree (about 6 veggie sides) which cost $26, and also the beef and chicken sampler entree (2 beef sides and two chicken sides) for $27. Usually a single entree is big enough to feed two people. But here, two entrees barely filled us up. So we paid double the price for half the amount that we usually get at any other Ethiopian restaurant. Besides the food, the service was also very poor. We came in for a reservation at noon on a Sunday, and it looked like there was only one person working (I don't think anyone was working in the kitchen, since all the food was obviously made a few days ago). They have two floors, and there were only people at two other tables. We were seated at a small table for two people near the wall. When we had asked for a bigger table near the window (we asked for a 4-person table, since they were not busy, and the entire second floor was empty), we got a lot of pushback. She kept arguing that if more people come in, she will have difficulty seating them, and said she had a lot of reservations at 1:30. She finally gave in when I reminded her that it was only noon, and that we would surely be gone by 1:30 (we were actually gone by 12:45, and only one other group came in to eat during that time). The overall encounter made us feel very unwelcome. I would not recommend coming here if you want Ethiopian food. There are much better options: Habesha Market, Ethiopic, Chercher, Enjera Restaurant, etc. I do hope the restaurant owner and the employees here the best though, and really hope that they step up their game. read more

Go there if you want to try something good and unique! It's said that Washington has lots of Ethiopians and thus lots of Ethiopian restaurants, but this one is indeed great. A small restaurant with two floors and a patio, classical and delicate decoration, feauturing many dishes great for trying different Ethiopian foods at once. I had dinner here. Ordered Kaisa as starter and chicken and beef sampler. Kaisa is an Ethiopian cheese, basically dried cottage cheese. It was blended with collard greens and pepper, and tasted very dense and silky and had a special smell due to the herbs. The sampler consisted of beef kaey watt (spicy curried beef cubes), chicken doro watt (spicy curried chicken cubes & leg, the sauce tasted a bit like black mole), beef alicha (yellow beef stew), chicken alicha (yellow chicken stew, a bit sweet), a hard boiled egg and some veggie. Order this dish if you want to go big and try and compare many great Ethiopian foods at once!! Also, you get unlimited side injera, which is a kind of fermented Ethiopian bread. You can eat the other food with injera. Remember to use your hands! Service was not bad either: very quick, very welcome and my server explained every food in the sampler in detail when she presented it to me. Clearly not a hidden gem but very much a known one. We got the Tomatoes and Mushrooms as apps. Do yourself a favor and order both sooo good. The tomatoes tasted super fresh and flavorful and the mushrooms had an excellent spicy. For dinner we did the lamb and Steak Tartare and both were great, my favorite was the lamb. We sampled the das combination vegetarian entrée sampler. It contained Ethiopian harvest vegetable (Cauliflower, string beans, and carrots simmered in stewed tomatoes), Shiro wat (seasoned chickpea flour), split peas, collard greens, red lentil, and cabbage with carrots in sauce.
