at first I thought maybe this place was a front but the fact that a fully vegan not crazy expensive place exists in this prime of a location is promising - I ordered the crispy artichoke bowl that comes with a tomato jam and "blue cheese" - I have 0 idea what the "blue cheese" is made of because its labeled as soy free and I don't think I want to know, however, you could so fool me into thinking this was real cheese - tomato jam added a flavorful punch to this dish -the actual artichokes oh my lord. they left my lips covered in oil/grease which was a little shocking for a healthy looking meal....but they tasted amazing. the crispy flakey outside paired to perfection with the soft warm inside. I've been a loyal customer at DC Vegan for quite some time and have always enjoyed the food -- but after my most recent visit, I can confidently say I won't be returning. What happened was not just disappointing, it was downright disrespectful. I walked into the upper café and politely asked a host/server -- a short man who appeared to be of Arab descent -- if there were any available tables. Instead of assisting or even acknowledging me properly, he casually told me to go to the register. When I got there, the staff were all clustered around the espresso machine, chatting and clearly not in a rush to help anyone. I waited patiently, asked again for a seat, and was simply told to grab a menu and find a table myself. Not only were most of the tables and menus visibly dirty, but the lack of structure and courtesy from the staff was appalling. To make matters worse, that same host/server who brushed me off went on to seat and serve another couple who arrived after me -- blatantly ignoring the fact that I had been waiting. The level of unprofessionalism and disregard for basic customer service was honestly shocking. This kind of treatment is completely unacceptable. Good food should never come at the cost of poor service, and in this case, the experience left a sour taste long before I even had a chance to order. I walked out without ordering -- not because I wanted to, but because I felt disrespected, ignored, and frankly, unwelcome. I expected better, especially from an establishment I once recommended to others. If this is the standard now, it's deeply disappointing -- and I won't hesitate to share this experience more widely if changes aren't made. Save yourselves from this place. I'm an omnivore, but I visited DC Vegan with some vegan friends. We visited on a Wednesday around 5 PM at the downstairs bar/restaurant, and it was pretty quiet. I liked the decor, like the plant designs on the walls and the line drawing of an opossum at our table (with a little caption) but I hated the smell -- they burn some sort of incense which distracts from the food and is really inappropriate for a restaurant. The service was okay but had a few misses, like we had to ask for the happy hour menu and they charged us happy hour prices for three of the four drinks, so they had to correct it. I tried the Cauliflower Wings (1/2 price on Wednesday, so $7.50 for 5 pieces), nachos (not on the regular menu), and Lasagna ($31). The food was decent. The first two items didn't have much meat or dairy substitutes in them, so I didn't really notice they were vegan. The lasagna was an enormous portion and was decent, but did taste noticeably different from non-vegan lasagne. It tasted a bit nutty, which makes sense since it used almond and cashew. It's good to have a vegan option like this in the city, but as a non-vegan I wouldn't bother to go back. read more

I ordered takeout from DC vegan, and it did not disappoint! I got the fries Italiano and the meatball sub. Both tasted excellent. The fries were perfectly cooked, and the cheese sauce topping was super cheesy and flavorful. There were some pickled chilies on top as well, which added a good contrast to the rest of the dish. The meatballs were delicious. They tasted very similar to actual meatballs (and better than some meatballs I've had at some places). Only complaint is that I felt like the rest of the sandwich could have been a little better. It just felt "bready", and could have been a bit bigger (specifically more meatballs) or had more toppings. Nevertheless, I definitely plan on ordering from here again. read more

I have a lot of food allergies, so I love the idea of DC vegan because I know I can eat anything on the menu (I'm allergic to shellfish and eggs). I was really blown away with how creative the menu was and how much the restaurant isn't apologizing for what they aren't and is celebrating what they are. The service was incredibly friendly (we were upstairs at the more casual area since we came for lunch) and it was a order and then sit situation. We got three things: one was exceptional, one was good, and one I wouldn't order again. The calamari was unbelievable. It tasted so close to the real thing I had to double check we were at a vegan restaurant! It was amazing. The wings were definitely good, but I wish the pieces were smaller so that they remained crispy and didn't lose the breading. The artichoke bowl was a bit of a let down. The cheese was really bland, and while parts of the dish were really good, they didn't pair well together as a bowl. I appreciate what they were going for though. Not good. We came here on the recommendation of a few people, but our experience was anything but good. First, there was only one server and she was running both the inside and the outside of the house. It was very frenetic and chaotic. Secondly, the moment we walked in, we noticed a really bad stench in the main dining area. We should have left at that moment, but we were hungry, tired, and far from home. We placed our order and the food came out very slowly. First the appetizer that arrived was different than what was described on the menu. Secondly, one of the orders we received was so over salted we had to send it back and switched the side to a salad, which was overdressed and too vinegary! Next, the server wasn't fully educated on the menu so she couldn't answer the questions we had as well. Finally, the food itself was bland, continued to be poorly prepared, and nothing to write home about. My eggplant sandwich was over sauced so the main ingredient felt hidden and I barely tasted it. My Husband's bowl was just "OK". I think by the time we got our main meal, we were ready to leave. Lastly, the restrooms were dirty and in need of repair. There were literally broken tiles on the ground and the soap dispenser (Mrs. Meyers) was a hodgepodge of different soaps- not Mrs. Meyers, so I actually just used hand sanitizer instead. Stopped by this beautiful gem on an overnight visit to Washington DC with the family. I'm vegan so of course I searched out the best vegan food in the area, the reviews on DC Vegan was all good so I had to see for myself. First off, our server Kelly was absolutely amazing! She made our experience along with the delicious food worth the trip with her wonderful & pleasant personality coupled with her on point great suggestions from the menu. I was excited to try this place but I see now that this place is described as an Italian deli so the menu would appeal more to meat eaters who want to try a vegan imitation of their foods. The pasta is made with impossible meat, which I don't eat. I ordered the Tofu Mushroom bowl so naturally I thought I was getting a hot bowl of food over grains, no I got a cold salad. The tofu was cold, the mushrooms were cold out of a can. I've never had canned mushrooms but I know what they look like, why would that be served in a restaurant except this is a deli. It was pricey at $17 plus tip and yet you have to get your own water. They have lots of desserts and some menu items you can't take to go. The decor is pretty purple couches. read more

My cousin is vegan and I always enjoy when she comes to visit and I can try some new vegan places in DC. I saw the news about the vegan cheese counter opening within DC Vegan and couldn't wait to take her to check it out, and check it out we did indeed! We started with the potato skins (Crispy potato shells stuffed with cashew cream, bacon bits, scallions and sour cream) which were delicious! Highly recommend. We also split the fried artichoke sub with fries (Fried artichoke hearts, carrot provolone, sundried tomato jam, arugula, lemon aioli) which was good but a little underwhelming. We also split the Caesar salad (Romaine, croutons, sunflower Caesar dressings and cashew parmesan) and I've gotta say the sunflower Caesar was soooo good! The cheese bar varies whenever you go, so we just went with a selection of favorites that were recommended by staff. We loved DC Vegan! Absolutely loved the calamari, potato skins, and carrot cake! These are not to miss. Calamari was unreal and I'd challenge a non vegan to tell the difference between actual calamari and their version. Same for the potato skins. I wasn't planning to order these but my sister wanted to try them - so glad she did bc they were amazing. The absolute best vegan bacon ever. Ever! We also had the lasagna and chicken piccata. I'll say that they were both very good but definitely overpriced. The lasagna needed more time cooking as it was lacking texture (a little mushy) but awesome flavor nonetheless. I would order again but ask for them to crisp up the edges. The chicken picatta was tasty and crunchy but had no sauce so I would've liked more yummy sauce to add some flavor. Didn't care for the mashed potatoes as they were kind of bland. Carrot cake was so moist and the best carrot cake I've ever had, even pre vegan. Definitely this place is a can't miss in DC! The calamari was okay. My eggplant was not, ricotta was bland, no flavor/seasoning in the eggplant, and it was just lukewarm. Not hot at all. When i was offered to change my sandwich suddenly they didn't serve it until 4. Yet, the reason I asked was because the people next to me got the lasagna, actually 2 of them to go. I think maybe some of the raving reviews got to have a different chef. As well the lady at the register saw me walk in long after a group of 3 people in front of me did. Like they already had menus in their hands contemplating when I came in. I had a really lovely experience here right before Christmas and have been meaning to write this review because I can't wait to go back. The food was unique and delicious, the service warm, friendly, and with attention to detail, and the ambience cozy and eclectic. A friend and I split a couple items including the cheese board, focaccia, and wedge salad, and we liked everything. We are both veg-friendly but neither of us vegan and we found them all tasty, generously-portioned and outside of the rote vegan options at most restaurants. Next time I want to try a larger variety of the cheeses which all sounded so interesting, as well as the king trumpet calamari which they were sold out of (it was so busy and my friend was smart to make a reservation as it was a Saturday night--you will probably need one!) Our server was excellent even though he was super busy, and I believe one of the owners checked in on us. The wallpaper, lamps etc. are super beautiful, and the chairs are so comfortable I sat back in one and ended up leaving my phone in it--we walked back to retrieve it after realizing this and the server instantly saw me and said he was happy I'd been so involved in the meal I wasn't looking at my phone. I've been to DC Vegan three times now, and each time I come I really want to like it because I've heard such great things, but always leave feeling disappointed. Unlike some other reviewers, I've never had an issue with the service and even have had the owner come around to tables and ask how things were - which was nice to see. However, the food always tends to be underwhelming. KING TRUMPET CALAMARI: 4/5 This is probably the best thing I've had a DC Vegan and has a nice crunch and is a good flavor / well-seasoned. It's a really fantastic appetizer. CHESAPEAKE FRITTERS: 3/5 The fritters were very large and flavorful, but overall too acidic and missing the umami flavor. I was expecting them to have more of a crunch given that they're fritters, but it looks like they were probably baked or pan fried because they lack that texture. FRENCH TOAST: 3/5 I'm a big sweet tooth and was really looking forward to this one. It's a solid dish with good flavor, but the texture is really off for these. They're very thick pieces and it has this firm chewy texture to it that really missing the mark for me. BREAKFAST BOWL: 1/5 This is the most disappointing dish and why I probably won't return to DC Vegan. It's overall too salty and lacking seasoning otherwise. The tofu eggs are mushy and taste only of turmeric. The vegan bacons flavor is hard to describe, but a big turn off and the aioli on the side is reminiscent of A1 steak sauce in a bad way. It's really quite a shame because their deli bar desserts always look enticing - but I can't help but feel like I'll continue to be disappointed by DC Vegan. read more

What we ordered and opinions: 2 Meaty Ball sandwiches ( 1 with a side of fries for an extra charge): a lot of bread, good bread, but a lot of it. I like my meatball sandwiches covered in marinara but these sandwiches just had them covered with the marinara as a topping. Decent flavor but was dry overall. 2 Hot chocolates: served at a drinkable temp! 1 Slice of chocolate cake: not overly sweet but semi-crumbly and dry. 1 slice of NY-style cheesecake: my guest would order this again. I desperately want to enjoy the Botanical Bar every time I'm there, but it's impossible. Their drinks have never been excellent, their food has always been mid (and overpriced), and they seem unable to decide what kind of vibe they want to put off. It's a weird place to charge for still water, given that it's not upscale. The decor is slightly tacky, but I love the animal sketches on the walls. I never have a real reason to go here, and I *am* a DC vegan. What a shame that the place that's supposed to fulfill our needs is overpriced and mediocre. read more

DC Vegan is a unique establishment between 17th & P streets. I was a bit confused at first but realized that it's comprised of a deli, which is located on the second floor, and a restaurant, which is located on the first floor. So, if you were also confused about the ~ vibes ~ don't worry, I got you! The deli, based on photos, is like any other... glass display case, tiled floor, etc. However, the restaurant (i.e., botanical bar) is rather ornate and private. It's a great spot for a secluded date, away from the bustling city. We stopped for some drinks and a shareable plate. Ended up getting an Aperol spritz, photosynthesis, moonflower and focaccia. I wasn't happy with the drinks. They were rather expensive for bland and somewhat odd flavors. I must note that the wait staff, who were beyond friendly, came over and asked several times whether we liked the cocktails. We showed indifference but never voiced our concern. The focaccia was wonderful though! A delicious snack! Overall, the restaurant is beautiful, wait staff is inviting and food is tasty. I am so glad this place exists! Had dinner & drinks on the patio with a group of friends. Great ambiance. Even the bathrooms were beautiful. Red corvette mezcal drink - 8/10. Fresh, smoky, & fun Photosynthesis drink- friends got this one and loved it Calamari - 10/10. I've never had vegan calamari before, and it was so unique and great. Focaccia - 5/10. Chicken parm sandwich - 6/10. Good, but I've had better. *I'm also not a huge red sauce fan, which definitely factored into this. Lasagna - 8/10. I would def recommend this one!! Cacio e pepe - 6/10. I've tried vegan versions of this dish a couple of times, and I've never been a huge fan. I think it's a hard thing to make vegan. Chocolate cake - 8/10. Rich & yummmmmmmy would recommend. We were greeted immediately in the cozy below-ground space made of dark floral wallpaper and flowery decor. Off the special Easter brunch menu, I ordered the glazed tofu cutlets (glaze was delicious, but I was hoping the tofu would be a bit more firm as a 'cutlet'), with scalloped potatoes (more sauce than potatoes-- but sauce was delicious) and grilled asparagus (perfection). The cocktails are works of art and strong, the best of both worlds for a reasonable price. Chicken sandwich was on-point. We will be back to try dessert! read more

Wow...just wow. I hardly even know where to begin. As the token vegetarian / plant-based person in my friend group, I'm constantly being flooded with recommendations (and requests for recommendations haha) for the best veggie-friendly places in the District. And, let me tell you, DC Vegan has gotten a lot of love in the last year or so -- I can hardly count how many times someone has recommended this plant-based deli to me, but, for whatever ridiculous reason, I never really found myself out by Logan Circle. Until, that is, they opened up their vegan cheese store and I felt like I could no longer justify not paying them a visit. Ironically, I didn't even end up ordering from their vegan cheese case, despite how beautiful and enticing it was, because I was just so overwhelmed (in the best way possible) by the rest of their menu. The first thing I noticed upon looking at their menu: they mark common allergens directly on their menu, so I don't have to bother pulling up an online allergen menu or peppering the staff with a million questions. Immediate win in my book -- for both me and whoever else is in the store with me. This was also probably the only time in my life I've been overjoyed to not see a single item with a little "V" or "VG" next to its name because there's no need for that here! My eyes immediately skipped over to their bowls, which are served with super fresh spring mix and quinoa for a satisfying, but not heavy base that packs some extra fiber and protein...great way to feel like I'm being a little extra healthy while devouring some vegan deliciousness. I ended up settling on their braised jackfruit bowl, which was basically their take on a Philly cheesesteak, but vegan and gluten-free-ified. But I guarantee you'll miss neither the meat nor the gluten -- it was absolutely delicious and jam-packed with flavor. The quinoa / spring mix base was topped with a super tender, umami braised jackfruit, roasted bell peppers and onions, and the most delightfully garlicky braised collard greens. Then, everything was topped with a beautiful drizzle of cashew cheese sauce. And...wowza. If what was in their vegan cheese case was even half as good as their cashew cheese sauce, I'm 100% sold...I'd buy out the entire supply if I could. The flavors absolutely sang, pairing beautifully with one another and providing a delicious, super satisfying meal. Although it was pretty light, my one watch-out is that it was pretty salty and with all of the braised / roasted items, it did get a bit oily toward the end, as all of the super-flavorful juices and oils dripped toward the bottom and got soaked up by the quinoa (which is just a sponge) and greens. Even so, the bowl was still pretty darn phenomenal. Beyond the food, the restaurant is adorable. The upstairs / main restaurant is pretty no-frills and utilitarian, but provides a lovely and relaxed energy for a casual meal. The botanical bar, though...absolutely gorgeous. If you want to feel like you're getting wined and dined but at an affordable price point and with delicious, innovative, plant-based takes on some classic favorites, definitely go there. A few weeks later, I found myself craving DC Vegan's incredible braised jackfruit bowl again, so I hopped over to Grubhub. I was super surprised to learn that DC Vegan had just changed their menu and rotated out their jackfruit bowl (but if you're not gluten-free you can still get it on a sandwich!), While I was a touch disappointed, this was the perfect opportunity to try out some of their other delicious menu items! I ordered their tofu and wild mushroom bowl for that day, as well as a grilled vegetable bowl for tomorrow. Both of them were super tasty, but, honestly, just not as fancy and creative as their pseudo Philly cheesesteak. They provided a really generous portion of tofu in the tofu and wild mushroom bowl, and while the sear gave it a great crust, the flavor of their vinaigrette didn't quite penetrate the thick cutlet. The wild mushrooms and onions did give the bowl a good kick of umami, though, which definitely helped to make up for what the tofu lacked in flavor. The grilled vegetable bowl was pretty standard, with the classic zucchini, eggplant, peppers, and onions; it wasn't the most creative, but an oldie is a goodie, and it was still super solid. Both bowls had a similar issue to the jackfruit bowl, though -- the sauces, oils, and juices of all the upper ingredients had a tendency to drip down and make the last few bites a bit too salty and greasy, which was exacerbated by ordering delivery. Even so, DC Vegan is still one of my absolute favorite vegetarian spots in DC -- whether it's the vibes, their creative takes on comfort food favorites, or the beautiful botanical bar, I can't recommend DC Vegan enough! And I will definitely be coming back for that vegan cheese shop. read more

Giving this a 4 but would give a 3.5 if half stars were available. Reason is mostly price. It was fairly pricey for what it was. I got the mushroom ragout, which was tasty, tasted like French Dip. There were a lot of mushrooms, which I appreciated. However, I ate the whole thing, and while I was full, I wasn't satisfied. I think this is because there weren't many beans so it was mostly just mushrooms with a couple of polenta cakes. At $32, it wasn't worth it for me. Staff was very kind, and the food came out within probably five minutes of me ordering it. But honestly the quick turnaround time only contributed to me feeling like $32 was steep because it clearly didn't take much care or effort to put together? Idk. I love an all vegan spot, and I was pleased that there was outdoor seating. The menu was also labeled really well for allergens, which is always appreciated. I think I'd say- come for the deli menu and order something under $20 and you'll probably get a fabulous meal. As far as how 'nice/fancy' it is, I was worried I'd be underdressed looking at prices online but it was pretty casual. Esp if you sit outside instead of inside. Cheers! read more

Only had a vegan prosciutto when I came by (hopefully that will change, as there are so many yummy vegan salamis nowadays), the Rebel spiked cheddar even had a pescatarian digging for the last morsel it was so tasty. Also had lunch there, the BLAT was with crispy glazed bacon, thick hearty chicken patty, tasty. My companion had the meatball sub. Great stuff there too. And oh yum the potato skins, fatty n delicious. It's been a sec since I'd had tiramisu of any sort, but they had it and Omigosh, so freaking delicious! DC vegan is a gem and truly one of my favorite spots. My favorite items here are the calamari and I love the ambiance. I've been wanting to try brunch here for so long and finally went this past weekend. Initially, I wanted the lemon ricotta pancakes but sadly they were out :( however I got the French toast instead and they were bomb!!!! I love how it was perfectly toasted on the outside but still has such a nice fluffiness to it as well. My friends and I were torn between ordering our favorite (the calamari) or trying something new the oyster Rockefeller. We went with the mushroom oysters and were kinda disappointed. Just seemed like it was sautéed oyster mushrooms with spinach, nothing really special or memorable. So I'd def say skip it and get the calamari because those are just so perfect read more

Excellent vegan food! We were a large party and they had very good service. The ambiance was very festive for St. Patty's and they had specials for the day. We tried the full Irish breakfast, with smoky salty bacon, and a crispy trumpet mushroom calamari. We also had the Buffalo cauliflower wings with a nice level of heat.
