If complicated is what you're going for, you're in the right place. We got here at 1:15, walked in, and waited for at least 15 mins to get ushered around back and forth about 3 times before being told you need a reservation. Mind you, there were at least 6 or 7 empty tables. So I was like okay, I'll order from the counter and then we can sit. Well, get there to order and find out that the menu "transition" is quite annoying because only half of what they have is available then you go to order something from whatever menu works at the given time and then they say they are out of out of certain ingredients and out of pancakes. Finally get our food and it's mediocre. Overall crap experience and if I'd have known we needed lunch reservations, I would have gone somewhere else.
I have walked past DC Vegan many many times and finally stopped in to try the famous eggplant parm! I did not realize this was not a counter service restaurant but a full service sit-down, but it was mostly casual. I was tempted to try the calamari but the server advised me it was a decent portion so I will return with hungry friends! I stuck with the eggplant parm sandwich with fries. The fries were just okay but the sandwich was everything I wanted it to be! I have no idea how they make their vegan ricotta but I did not miss the dairy. The bread was also perfectly soft with a toasty outside. Service was great and my food came out quick! Def will be back to check out more options and the cheese counter as well!
Homey vegan restaurant in DuPont circle that serves plant-based American fare, desserts, and various drinks. The interior is warm and inviting and casual enough for a coffee and cake rendezvous as well as a full meal with drinks. Service is just as warm and inviting. Staff was helpful and patient with answering questions about the menu. I ordered the fried artichoke sandwich with fries. The artichokes were crispy, tangy and tender. It was stuffed in a toasted sub roll with arugula, tofu and sun dried tomato jam. A lemon aioli was drizzled over the sandwich stuffing. The sandwich had a firm texture and crisp, and very flavorful. Fries were crispy and well seasoned. My companion loved his chili relleno with rice and beans. For dessert we shared a chocolate chip cannoli. It was a powdered sugar cannoli shell filled with a creamy filling and sweet chocolate chips. Will be back!
So while at home, I found a Veegan spot called DC Veegan. They are pretty amazing. They have a lunch menu. They have a happy hour. They have a taco Friday like all the things had some jackfruit Phillies steak as well as a chicken sandwich really really good and they have vegan artisan cheeses as well in the cooler. They also have a cooler that has desserts to switch all our Veegan and when I tell you these desserts look decadent definitely check them out and if you live in DC and you haven't heard about this place head on over when you get a chance
I am not Vegan except for a few lunches a week. But I loved your restaurant! I came down to DC from the NY area to help my daughter who is Vegan. I can't remember his name but he has blondish hair and he was so friendly. He guided me as I ordered take out and reminded me about using the InKind app which saved us some money. The food was absolutely delicious and the Tiramisu tasted just like the non-Vegan version. We will be back and my daughter loves to get food from your place. Please open up more Vegan restaurants, if possible! MarcW

"That's gonna be a no from me, dawg!" The service was very good, even though the faux chicken sandwich patty I ordered was small and didn't merit the $17 price tag. The fries for $2 were plentiful, but it didn't seem to balance out. Unseasoned, unsalted fries. I wish they put the ingredients of the chicken patty. I had no idea what I was biting into. It tasted weird and super dry. It also stunk like a gas leak inside. They kept having to tell customers it's the pizza place downstairs. It was also hot as heck inside. I figured their AC was busted but they actually only switched it on when more customers came in. I selected this restaurant since they participate in the InKind network but I don't intend to return.
Why isn't this place packed every night?! I was lucky enough to sneak in before closing time on a recent trip to DC and was blown away by the service and quality of the food. The chicken Caesar salad was amazing--I would be happy to eat that on a regular basis. On my visit I learned that they sometimes shut down the kitchen early if business is slow, so you should call them to confirm that they are open if you're going close to closing time. Although I didn't partake of them, the desserts looked incredible. Another time, perhaps.
I was in Dupont yesterday, doing apartment hunting. As the day started to wind down, I walked across this beautiful little nook, with folks coming in at opening time for dinner. The staff were kind enough to accommodate me, despite not having a reservation. The seating inside was very clean and reminiscent of an Art Deco era or possibly having a Jazz club feel to it. As a former vegan for one year and growing up with vegetarian parents, I've tried a variety of plant-based foods - I was accompanied by my father on this dinner - we were certainly looking forward to critiquing this place. We ordered a few things off the menu: Bucatini and meatballs, Grilled vegetable bowl, Mocha with oat milk, NY style cheese cake and a chocolate mousse cake. Firstly, the pasta sauce was savory and delicious, very fresh tomatoes, noodles were thick and had the perfect bite, and the meatballs were moist and flavorful. Both the salad, which had come complementary, and the grilled vegetable bowl, were the perfect contrast to the hearty entree. The combination of the earthy eggplant and italian peppers, and the smooth and zesty house vinaigrette, felt like a symphony. It's what other salad places are trying so hard to be. The balance, healthiness and taste of these dishes were so satisfying. It's rare that I don't feel like adding anything more to a dish. The chef has certainly curated these meals to perfection. Moreover, the food came out almost instantaneously and the staff were experienced and attentive. Also, I like trying coffee and desserts, wherever I go. It gives me an equal playing field to compare places. I took these to go - the coffee was one of the best Mocha's I've had - the cakes were also very upscale - a great ending to an ever greater meal. Overall, we left the restaurant feeling rejuvenated and enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend this place to vegans and non-vegans alike, and can't wait to try DC Vegan again soon!
This is one of the better vegan restaurants I've tried for American food! Everything they had emulated their meat cousin very well. From the cauliflower wings, chicken sandwich and meatball sub. Its very filling too, we had this for lunch and was too full to even eat dinner!
very happy with my experience at dc vegan! the atmosphere is very relaxed and wasn't super loud while i was there. there have indoor seating as well as a cute little lifted patio! i did miss the location and walk by it 2-3x before i identified that dc vegan was UP the stairs--definitely something to note before going. the food was a 10/10! i really enjoyed my chicken caesar salad, and the cauliflower wings are divine! i can't even describe how much i enjoyed the carrot cake. it also wasn't difficult to find something that didn't contain any of my allergens, and the staff was knowledgeable about the menu items. if i am ever in dc again, i will definitely be coming back! one of my favorite vegan restaurants for sure.
The food is always fantastic, for brunch, lunch, dinner, and dessert. My favorite things have been the chicken Caesar salad and the cheesecakes, impossible to tell that they're vegan! The holiday catering is also a great option. Such incredible food coming out of a cute interior that looks like a standard deli counter.
I will start by saying I am not vegan but have been to a good selection of vegan restaurants and this is by far the most mediocre. I ordered the calamari and the Buffalo cauliflower. Neither of these were even warm. Calamari was whatever and the cauliflower was fine but I like Buffalo sauce and that is really the only reason. At the table there was also a burrito and French toast, a bowl and pancakes. The burrito was a disaster that both people who ordered it struggled to eat as it immediately falls apart. The pancakes were the only thing that looked like maybe was tasty. Mind you all of this is way over priced like appetizers in the 20 dollar range. Service was also some of the worst, server was rude and irritated from the start and had to ask repeatedly for simple things like forks, and my coffee which took about 20 minutes for some reason. I will say the one vegan at the table does like this spot and comes kinda regularly.

Such an experience, I can't wait to go back! I love love love being able to eat at a restaurant that only serves the food I eat! I never have to double check or second guess anything. The Buffalo cauliflower was amazing. I also ordered a to-go chicken Caesar salad which was delicious. The drinks were equally as good! Staff were super friendly and helpful when ordering. Continue to be obsessed with this place. Really has something for everyone and every occasion: sweet botanical bar downstairs for a nicer dinner out, casual deli/coffee shop upstairs for a chill lunch or doing work, plus catering and a million to go options (speciality pastries, plant-based cheese, a curated wine selection). And now they serve breakfast on weekday mornings! The service here has always been great as well. read more

The best thing was the marinara sauce that went w the mushroom calamari!!! Not pictured. This is a MUST GO place every time I'm in DC it's SO CUTE in there and the craft cocktails are to die for. I really enjoy the oysters Rockefeller and the plant based Brie cheese and rosemary crackers! The bbq and buffalo cauliflower wings also amazing. Just what a wonderful place! They are opening up a yoga studio upstairs as well!!!! A+++++++ read more

Stopped in on a whim while in the area. Felt adventurous and got the Jackfruit Cheesesteak with a cashew cheese sauce. The sandwich was excellent. The texture of the steak was a perfect match for traditional shredded steak, including a bit of that crispy char flavors around the edges. I didn't pick up any flavor resembling cheese, but the sauce had a strong mustard flavor that worked great with the sweetness from the peppers. The fries were just fries, but they were crispy and had some good salt flavor. I was expecting to still be hungry after the dish, as I enjoy hearty meals and vegan dishes have often left me wanting more in the past. However, this sandwich also hit the marks on that note as well. read more

The bacon sandy was good, and so were the shared plates. The other dishes weren't my favorite. The cheesecake was no bueno, but the carrot cake was better. It was sweet. Cute place. read more
I have mixed reviews of DC Vegan. I've come for both the evening menu and the brunch menu, and hands down, I'd only come for the evening/dinner in the future. I love the fact they have all vegan food, the vibe is also amazing, it's a gorgeous restaurant, especially at night. However, the food is just too expensive for the quantities you're recipe Omg. Especially brunch, me and friend ordered two meals that we split, and we're still hungry for more. We ended up having to buy a third meal to split to finally feel satisfied and ended up with an astronomical bill for it. So, yea I'd skip brunch and go straight to dinner to enjoy some good vegan food and chill vibes. read more

Kelly greeted us with a warm smile as we came in from a drizzly DC morning. The establishment was cute and clean, with great seating, boasting a great window seat, benches, outdoor patio, and street patio. We came in for breakfast and got the sausage and egg English muffin & breakfast wrap. The muffin was larger than your standard English muffin, very fluffy and tender, great portion of just egg, cheese, and two sausage patties. The wrap was in a gluten free tortilla, and had a great mix of egg, sausage, potato and cheese. They were out of pico de gallo, which was supposed to accompany the wrap. Since the wrap was so dense, it really did need that freshness of the pico. We did get some buffalo hot sauce, which was great! Overall it was a great experience! My only minimal critique would be that the food was all just a tad over-salted. We tend to always have to salt our food at other establishments, so it was a surprise. Overall, everything was really great and we will definitely be back to experience their deli and lunch menu! read more

Absolutely love DC Vegan. I've been here for an event, and I've had an offsite event catered from here, and both times the service really went above and beyond. When I was there, it was for a small event, and not only were the staff great about accommodating and being patient with my group, but when we asked them to reduce the volume of the music so we could have our event discussion, they immediately complied. For the catering event, I asked if I could do a Monday pickup (since it was a Monday event) and not only did they agree, in spite of being closed on Mondays, but i was literally the only catering order they even had that day, so they opened just for me, which is an unreal level of restaurant courteousness. The upstaids deli space is roomy and cheery, and the downstairs Botanical Bar is gorgeous and sexy. Ideal for a date, but also really nice and chill for pretty much any dining situation. For now the stars are mostly for ambiance and service. The food has been a little more hit or miss with me, but when it's a hit, it HITS. The vegan macaroni and cheese that I ordered for the catered event was unbelievably delicious. The beet burger sliders are good, would have been better if hot, but I appreciated the spicy kick. I was a little meh on the balsamic glazed tofu, but that was the most popular item at the catered event, so I'm clearly an outlier there. The lemon dill potato salad was less popular but I personally enjoyed how light and refreshing that was, with nice bright flavors. The chesapeake fritters I had during my group event, on the other hand, were a little TOO lemony. Good coleslaw though, and my partner enjoyed his meatball sub. Excited to make drinks at the Botanical Bar my next trip, and at some point, brunch! read more
There are great options, I got the breakfast bowl with vegan sausage. For my son, I got a side of fries and breakfast sausage but there are not many kid friendly options i.e. side of fruit, oatmeal etc. The food was cool and it was great to be able to find a local vegan restaurant to grab breakfast after walking around the city. read more

Nothing but amazing things to say about DC Vegan. My vegan sister was in town visiting so we did a make your own vegan tour and tried just about every spot in DC. This was in the top without a doubt. - calamari, uh yum! Not too greasy or overly breaded, good flavor. - Cesar salad, apparently it's hard to find a good vegan Cesar salad but my sister said it was her favorite meal of the whole trip! - loaded fries, just oozed of garlic and we LOVED it. - Philly steak, was my brother in laws favorite meal of the trip! He said it was one of the best sandwiches he's ever had. - desserts included, cannoli, carrot cake, and tiramisu cheesecake. All 10/10 and instantly devoured. Whatever they are doing at DC Vegan, they are doing RIGHT! Also special shout out to the really nice and helpful lady who checked us out! read more
I was excited to find a Vegan spot in DC with comfort food! DC Vegan has indoor and outdoor seating which is nice because it does get busy. It was nice sitting outside since you're up high on the patio and it's a bit more intimate. The staff were friendly and overall it was a nice vibe there. The only reason I gave DC Vegan four stars is that my sister's order took way too long. I pretty much finished my entire meal before she got hers. I walked in to let them know my sister didn't get her meal yet and the woman didn't seem in a rush to get it. Once the woman did grab the food, she walked right past me and went outside without letting me know it was my sister's. It was just weird since I stood in the place a little longer not knowing she finally gave my sister her food. Overall, the food was good, but the service could have been slightly better. read more

First and foremost I was SOOO excited to try this place being that they won best vegan restaurant in DC. We ordered the Cauliflower wings, Lasagna, Foccasia, Caccio de Pepe, And the calimari.. cauliflower wings were great minus the bigger pieces because the inside still had the raw dredge inside making it inedible. Sauce was delicious I will say. The focaccia was also pretty good.. the lasagna was not good, the sauce tasted like a can :/ and the layers of the lasagna were cold inside.. the Caccio de Pepe were made with super thick Udon noodles and personally lacked flavor, the server was also clueless to the menu and wasn't attentive at all. The ambiance was quiet, no music playing in the background.. also the prices for everything was more on the expensive side (21-28$ for apps) (28-45$ for entrees.... I would love to try it again and give them another chance regardless. Oh also they didn't even tell us about the specials they had.. read more

Brunch review: delicious and hearty. We ordered a bunch of food: Oyster Rockefeller: oyster mushrooms with crispy toast, buttery , 9/10 (doesn't take like oysters but it's still good) Frittata - was very potato heavy and delicious! It is a HUGE meal Lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes - another heavy and rich dish, it's more like a cake but that's a good thing! Truffle oyster omelet -- the potatoes were crunchy with just a hint of oil. The omelette was a little oily but still delicious and the bread soaked it up just fine All and all the best brunch in town! read more
I've been wanting to check out the vegan food scene in DC and I'm so grateful that I stopped by! The creativity of their dishes to try to mimic the original dish is out-of-this-world, I was blown away by the texture of the vegan calamari (made out of king trumpet mushrooms). The ambiance was warm & welcoming and the service was incredibly fast. Can't wait to try more next time I'm in town! read more
at first I thought maybe this place was a front but the fact that a fully vegan not crazy expensive place exists in this prime of a location is promising - I ordered the crispy artichoke bowl that comes with a tomato jam and "blue cheese" - I have 0 idea what the "blue cheese" is made of because its labeled as soy free and I don't think I want to know, however, you could so fool me into thinking this was real cheese - tomato jam added a flavorful punch to this dish -the actual artichokes oh my lord. they left my lips covered in oil/grease which was a little shocking for a healthy looking meal....but they tasted amazing. the crispy flakey outside paired to perfection with the soft warm inside. I would order just the artichokes with some dip happily. read more

I ordered takeout from DC vegan, and it did not disappoint! I got the fries Italiano and the meatball sub. Both tasted excellent. The fries were perfectly cooked, and the cheese sauce topping was super cheesy and flavorful. There were some pickled chilies on top as well, which added a good contrast to the rest of the dish. The meatballs were delicious. They tasted very similar to actual meatballs (and better than some meatballs I've had at some places). Only complaint is that I felt like the rest of the sandwich could have been a little better. It just felt "bready", and could have been a bit bigger (specifically more meatballs) or had more toppings. Nevertheless, I definitely plan on ordering from here again. read more
I have a lot of food allergies, so I love the idea of DC vegan because I know I can eat anything on the menu (I'm allergic to shellfish and eggs). I was really blown away with how creative the menu was and how much the restaurant isn't apologizing for what they aren't and is celebrating what they are. The service was incredibly friendly (we were upstairs at the more casual area since we came for lunch) and it was a order and then sit situation. We got three things: one was exceptional, one was good, and one I wouldn't order again. The calamari was unbelievable. It tasted so close to the real thing I had to double check we were at a vegan restaurant! It was amazing. The wings were definitely good, but I wish the pieces were smaller so that they remained crispy and didn't lose the breading. The artichoke bowl was a bit of a let down. The cheese was really bland, and while parts of the dish were really good, they didn't pair well together as a bowl. I appreciate what they were going for though. The location is super cute, and I can't wait to come back and try more! read more
I'm an omnivore, but I visited DC Vegan with some vegan friends. We visited on a Wednesday around 5 PM at the downstairs bar/restaurant, and it was pretty quiet. I liked the decor, like the plant designs on the walls and the line drawing of an opossum at our table (with a little caption) but I hated the smell -- they burn some sort of incense which distracts from the food and is really inappropriate for a restaurant. The service was okay but had a few misses, like we had to ask for the happy hour menu and they charged us happy hour prices for three of the four drinks, so they had to correct it. I tried the Cauliflower Wings (1/2 price on Wednesday, so $7.50 for 5 pieces), nachos (not on the regular menu), and Lasagna ($31). The food was decent. The first two items didn't have much meat or dairy substitutes in them, so I didn't really notice they were vegan. The lasagna was an enormous portion and was decent, but did taste noticeably different from non-vegan lasagne. It tasted a bit nutty, which makes sense since it used almond and cashew. It's good to have a vegan option like this in the city, but as a non-vegan I wouldn't bother to go back. read more

Traveling and dining frequently I have the opportunity to meet. Many people places and spaces. Dining at vegan restaurants can often times be a hit or miss. I have dined at vegan restaurants where the foods are over priced for a small portion of foods that are not flavorful. Dc vegans decor is inviting clean and trendy. The multi level space allows guest to sit in areas with zen and peace if they desire. The chicken cutlet Parmesan with the most incredible marinara sauce is one of our favorite new sandwiches. The vegan Lasagna was mouth watering layers of pure delightful bliss. The highlight of the trip to Dc vegan. Was meeting chef marquis. A chef who greets guest and diners is one of the things that goes down on my list of things that make a restaurant best of the best. If you are ever in Dc make the Dc vegan a place that goes down on your must do list. read more

I was excited to try this place but I see now that this place is described as an Italian deli so the menu would appeal more to meat eaters who want to try a vegan imitation of their foods. The pasta is made with impossible meat, which I don't eat. I ordered the Tofu Mushroom bowl so naturally I thought I was getting a hot bowl of food over grains, no I got a cold salad. The tofu was cold, the mushrooms were cold out of a can. I've never had canned mushrooms but I know what they look like, why would that be served in a restaurant except this is a deli. It was pricey at $17 plus tip and yet you have to get your own water. They have lots of desserts and some menu items you can't take to go. The decor is pretty purple couches. read more
My cousin is vegan and I always enjoy when she comes to visit and I can try some new vegan places in DC. I saw the news about the vegan cheese counter opening within DC Vegan and couldn't wait to take her to check it out, and check it out we did indeed! We started with the potato skins (Crispy potato shells stuffed with cashew cream, bacon bits, scallions and sour cream) which were delicious! Highly recommend. We also split the fried artichoke sub with fries (Fried artichoke hearts, carrot provolone, sundried tomato jam, arugula, lemon aioli) which was good but a little underwhelming. We also split the Caesar salad (Romaine, croutons, sunflower Caesar dressings and cashew parmesan) and I've gotta say the sunflower Caesar was soooo good! The cheese bar varies whenever you go, so we just went with a selection of favorites that were recommended by staff. I don't remember exactly what they were, but they were all delicious (albeit a bit pricey) Definitely a fun experience! read more

I had a really lovely experience here right before Christmas and have been meaning to write this review because I can't wait to go back. The food was unique and delicious, the service warm, friendly, and with attention to detail, and the ambience cozy and eclectic. A friend and I split a couple items including the cheese board, focaccia, and wedge salad, and we liked everything. We are both veg-friendly but neither of us vegan and we found them all tasty, generously-portioned and outside of the rote vegan options at most restaurants. Next time I want to try a larger variety of the cheeses which all sounded so interesting, as well as the king trumpet calamari which they were sold out of (it was so busy and my friend was smart to make a reservation as it was a Saturday night--you will probably need one!) Our server was excellent even though he was super busy, and I believe one of the owners checked in on us. The wallpaper, lamps etc. are super beautiful, and the chairs are so comfortable I sat back in one and ended up leaving my phone in it--we walked back to retrieve it after realizing this and the server instantly saw me and said he was happy I'd been so involved in the meal I wasn't looking at my phone. Cozy, delicious, innovative, and just plain nice people, I highly recommend. read more

Stopped in for lunch as this place has been on my list. What we ordered and opinions: 2 Meaty Ball sandwiches ( 1 with a side of fries for an extra charge): a lot of bread, good bread, but a lot of it. I like my meatball sandwiches covered in marinara but these sandwiches just had them covered with the marinara as a topping. Decent flavor but was dry overall. 2 Hot chocolates: served at a drinkable temp! 1 Slice of chocolate cake: not overly sweet but semi-crumbly and dry. 1 slice of NY-style cheesecake: my guest would order this again. Overall underwhelmed but will try again because the menu does entice me and I would like to give it a second chance. (I would not get this sandwich or chocolate cake again). read more

We loved DC Vegan! Absolutely loved the calamari, potato skins, and carrot cake! These are not to miss. Calamari was unreal and I'd challenge a non vegan to tell the difference between actual calamari and their version. Same for the potato skins. I wasn't planning to order these but my sister wanted to try them - so glad she did bc they were amazing. The absolute best vegan bacon ever. Ever! We also had the lasagna and chicken piccata. I'll say that they were both very good but definitely overpriced. The lasagna needed more time cooking as it was lacking texture (a little mushy) but awesome flavor nonetheless. I would order again but ask for them to crisp up the edges. The chicken picatta was tasty and crunchy but had no sauce so I would've liked more yummy sauce to add some flavor. Didn't care for the mashed potatoes as they were kind of bland. Carrot cake was so moist and the best carrot cake I've ever had, even pre vegan. Definitely this place is a can't miss in DC! Great service. Cute atmosphere too! read more
