Your in the great neighborhood of Adams Morgan. You're outside doing some repairs on a condo when you casually drop to your client that's you're heading to lunch, probably Andy's or something. Then the clouds part (metaphorically) and this woman, this angel on Earth suggests you actually try So's Your Mom. She raves about it. It all makes sense to you. Andy's has got enough money. Those stores are popping up like wildfire to hell with that. I'm going to So's Your Mom. It's my kind of place too. Nondescript, mom and pop type of place. Been there for decades. No flashy gimmicks just reliable sandwiches and apparently coffee based on their decor (But I'm here for lunch!). The guy at the counter is friendly, he's a talker, he's got recommendations. I don't need them but I ask for all of em Hit me pal! I ignore all of them and get a turkey avocado BLT situation. FANTASTIC. And somehow the bag of indie potato chips is criminally underpriced. He doesn't know they're charging like $3.50 a pop for these down at Adams, Morgan, Ace and other places around the city. So's Your Mom is a hole in the wall breakfast and bagel spot in Adams Morgan. My husband and I stumbled upon it when we were walking back from Because Science toward our hotel. The signs outside advertising bagels got our attention. This establishment is cash only, so bring cash or hit the ATM before you come. The prices are incredibly reasonable, though, and probably less overhead/swipe fees. The whitefish and lox spread bagel was wonderful for only $5. It is not a huge bagel but the perfect size for breakfast. Personally, I'd rather not have any leftovers since I'm traveling and our room didn't have a mini-fridge or microwave anyway. You wait for your food for awhile, but we found some nice locals to chat with and they recommended a few other spots to us. There's no seating so you must take your food to go. It's too bad we found this spot on our last day in DC, but it will be our go-to if we stay at the Washington Hilton again. read more

This place is like the platform 9 3/4 in Harry Potter that had an invisible door and Harry had to just close his eyes and just go through it and enter the magical train station. Coming from the tri-state area, I do miss my S tier bagels and sandwiches. However my friend in the area recommended this place so I decided to give it a shot. First things first, this is not a typical experience. It's crowded and it gets confusing who's in line and who's not. Second of all, you don't pay until you receive your sandwich... which makes the crowd situation even worse. Third, there's no way to know if your order has been called if you stood outside because it's so crowded. Now that's out of the way, the food took about 15-20 minutes on a busy Saturday morning. Will I say it was good? Yes, it was very comparable to my favorite lox bagel in NYC which says a lot. Super refreshing, filling, and tasty. Was it the same? No, but I wasn't expecting it to be. Was it worth the price? Absolutely. This spot is super affordable, and I think that's why it's always crowded. You wouldn't see prices like this anywhere else. This is a cute and very affordable deli in Adams Morgan! It has a very New York deli/bodega vibe and is cash only--that can be a bit of a hassle, but the staff is nice and friendly. My friend and I ordered a Reuben and a turkey pastrami sandwich. Both were serviceable sandwiches, certainly nothing mind blowing but also fair quality for the affordable price. They are closed Wednesdays and it is a grab and go place. They also have snacks, drinks, and coffee lining the perimeter. Even when the line is moderately long, they have fast service. So's Your Mom is a DC classic for a reason. They serve up delicious bagel sandwiches with innovative twists. I love how they have bagel flavors outside of what you typically see at bagel shops, including Maple salt and pepper, and Za'atar. The colorful decor is very welcoming (you can spot any So's Your Mom location in DC from blocks away). I got the Za'atar bagel with roasted vegetable cream cheese. The bagel itself was chewy and fresh. However, it didn't have a very strong Za'atar flavor. The veggie cream cheese was yummy, but I didn't really get any roasted flavor (just tasted like a standard veggie cream cheese). I have also tried the Sun City with pastrami, which was delicious and extremely filling. If visiting on the weekend, I would highly recommend ordering online ahead of time (the line will be out the door Saturday and Sunday mornings). DC is everybody's hometown but nobody's hometown...exhibit A is the lack of the ethnic neighborhoods like your fair city up the road 40 miles. The service was surprisingly fast and I was able to get coffee and a bagel sandwich (egg and cheese) in under 10 minutes without having to order ahead.
