another restaurant week adventure has concluded, this time, uptown - the inside of the restaurant is cute, very well decorated with a little bit of Mediterranean hotel lobby feel. does that make any sense? we sat in the elevated back section amongst the other yapping groups - I started my meal with the arayes which was a banger of an entry. my dining companions who started with the hummus felt the same way about their start! the arayes was a crispy olive oil covered cracking pita filled with thick juicy lamb. the labneh pool was bountiful. - the gravlax did not get the same reaction, the portion was small and very much whatever - for my entree I got the hake (their online menu is not accurate with options) and it was delicious. the fish was so moist and split apart on each muscle line. the green beans sat in a light buttery sauce - the place fell short with dessert, the cheesecake was a labneh cheesecake which immediately interested me but it was very melty soft, the texture of a whipped cream and the flavor was minimal. the pecan crust was nutty and sweet like a good ice cream topping read more

Stopped in for their distinguished reputation and their Restaurant Week menu which, on their website features a Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich which, I'll be honest locked it in for me as I was debating between a few spots. I'll start by saying that, while I was initially disappointed not to see the schnitzel on the menu, the server checked with the kitchen and the kitchen made a schnitzel happen for me. While this was a nice gesture, service was also disappointing and without warmth or enthusiasm. The Chilled Corn Soup appetizer had no flavor and neither did the sandwich. I also heard the table next to me ask for salt... People are coming into your restaurant to spend their money so you should show up for them at every step. There's hundreds of restaurants around. This goes to every restaurant/ bar out there who flaunts a Show up for your customers and for your team. I'm done leaving these spots completely underwhelmed due. Had a wonderful dinner during restaurant week. Such a delight to discover additional items on the menu over what was posted online. The space is beautiful and cozy. For such a large space it has an intimate feel. We tried the corn cannelloni and salmon gravlax to start. Both were delicious and so fresh. The interior is lively and spacious, but it's another loud restaurant. We were sat in a corner near the windows where it's a little quieter. Our server was good. He and the staff were clearly well-trained- no one reached across me to fill my water glass. We went for brunch. Everything was delicious and filling. Came here for brunch yesterday and had such a good time. Definitely make reservations as it gets busy over the weekend. Really cute decor inside. Service was good, our server didn't come around as often but I didn't mind that. We got the shakshuka, kubaneh, and french toast. Everything came out promptly and tasted delicious! The bread with the shakshuka was so fluffy and seasoned well. The kubaneh was so good, just wish they served it with labneh but that's only the large portion. A friend and I walked in on a Saturday without a reservation and were able to be seated immediately. The restaurant was pretty full so we were happy about that. The waiter was attentive by not pushy which I always appreciate. We split the Greek salad as an appetizer, it was a nice size but it was salty for some reason. I didn't add any dressing or salt to it myself. My friend had the branzino which was REALLY good. She let me taste it. :) I had the lamb which was OK, but a little tough. (Speaking of late) my friend ran 30 minutes behind for our reservation and the staff still treated me very kindly as I waited at the bar for her. i've wanted to go to Dagon for the longest time. I tried during restaurant week, but ended up at their sister restaurant Acadia. So when my friends suggested we go there after work I was beyond thrilled. Nestled on the corner of Broadway and W 91st on the Upper West Side the restaurant's color scheme is vibrant, energetic and inviting The use of turquoise reminded me of the cool waters of the Mediterranean. Which fits Dagon perfectly as it serves exquisite dishes from across the region. Mejda, our waitress was one of the best servers I have ever had. She was so attentive to every person and suggested foods to compliment everyone's palate. For those that wanted light items she recommended the Mezze. Mezze is a style of dining where one eats small plates similar to tapas. At Dagon, we chose the Matbucha, a roasted tomato, sweet pepper dip, and the Baba Ganouj, a fire-roasted eggplant with preserved lemon. For a small plate we had the Shishbarak, Lebanese mushroom filled dumplings with warm yogurt, pine nuts and spicy herb since it was highly recommended. For my entree I chose the Chicken Sofrito, a slow-braised chicken with olives and preserved lemon. The meat was tender, flavorful and eating it felt so divine and guilt free! Mejda regularly checked in on us. Her mindfulness and thoughtful nature made us feel extra special and elevated our dining experience. We learned she is from the region and dishes from her country are on the menu at Dagon. Overall the food, service, and ambiance was AMAZING!!! Everyone truly enjoyed themselves. Gorgeous ambiance and great service. However the food was a let down. We went during the forgotten foods festival. The lamb fritter appetizer had too much dill and was not a balanced dish. The oxtail was not tender and the egg tasted strange. Wish the broth was thicker and more of a sauce. The chicken was over cooked. I appreciated the amount of olives though. The sauce was great. The bread was not the challah bread I know and was disappointing. The dessert was too sweet and the tahini left a bitter and strange taste in my mouth. I visited here for brunch with friends and it was an awesome spot. The ambiance and decor is beautiful; very classy yet warm. Our server was a bit snarky, but more in a dry humor way than in a rude way, which was just a bit funny. I ordered the Israeli Breakfast because I really couldn't decide what I wanted it and it basically had everything on it. It was a TON of food, and I really should have split it with someone or taken home the giant bagel, but the bagel arrived warm! The potatoes were probably a highlight, in addition to the bagel. I'll note that my eggs did not arrive as ordered (I ordered over medium, and they came over easy), but I had already started eating when I cut into them and realized, and didn't bother telling the waiter and sending them back. Just didn't seem worth the hassle when I'm not an egg person and mostly ended up leaving them anyway. We ordered table French Toast when we ordered our savory mains, and he asked us whether we wanted it as an appetizer, with our mains, or as a dessert, which was nice. However, then it seemed like he forgot to put it in because he asked us about dessert menus later before the French Toast had arrived, and it took a while to come out. But it eventually arrived and it was delicious. Would recommend. My friend claims it's the best French Toast he's ever had, but I'm not sure I'd go that far. The espresso martini was also delicious; a little twist on the traditional, but not too avant garde--basically my favorite kind of espresso martini. An Israeli IPA ? who knew ! We intended to order 5 separate entrees per normal, but the appetizers looked so enticing we couldn't help but order 4 of them, after that we weren't that hungry and only ordered 1 entree plus some wines and I had two of the excellent IPA's (look for the sloth) they let us eat everything family style and we didn't finish everything so took a little bit home for later, the portions were incredibly generous and we did not intend to eat (essentially) apps for entrees but we weren't really paying attention to how much food was coming. Anyway the bill was shockingly reasonable for a NYC dinner and us sitting for a long time. What a gem ! this place earns a "hidden gem" rating from me. Nice ambient lighting. Tables were kinda tight and the gaps were pretty narrow but it's a nice dinner spot (and I imagine a brunch spot too) Food: so good. What we got: 1. 3 mezze: got the spicy feta, the beets, and the artichoke olive dip. Came with the flatbread. So good. The spicy feta was acidic and zingy. The beets came with a yoghurt labneh situation at the bottom and some tender beef tongue cubes. The artichoke olive dip was also good. The bread was killer. Warm with lots of zaatar 2. Charred octopus: perfectly cooked octopus with some squid ink sauce at the bottom and these good rice cakes at the side 3. Cauliflower: love a good cauliflower dish and these were yum 4. Lamb: so tender. So good. The pilaf was killer with the dates and other dried fruit. Lovely. Overall; Dagon's probably one of the best Israeli / Mediterranean places I've been to in NY. First time to Dagon. Enjoyed what I had -- although I will say it's a bit heavy on seafood (I'm allergic, so can't enjoy any of it). I had Agu's Tunisian Cigar to start -- big fan. Then I shared a side of the flash friend brussels sprouts. That was more than enough for me! Other folks in my party had main courses -- the beef brisket was a big hit. If I'm able to go back, I'll probably try the crispy roasted lamb, which another friend had and really enjoyed. We've been to Dagon enough times now for us to maybe consider it one of our neighborhood standards. Time for a re-review after all these years. TLDR: It's a pleasant, competent restaurant with a few standout items on the menu, but I would not consider this destination dining. I'm still inclined to think it's a touch spendier than the quality (and sometimes quantity) merits, but perhaps that's less true now given tariff related cost increases and inflation more generally. - There's a taboon / tabun in the restaurant. Dishes made in this oven are a highlight. - The bread is excellent, but must be ordered separately. (Bread service is no longer the norm at many NYC restaurants, so Dagon is not alone in this regard.) - Mezze are tasty, but quite small for the $12 pricetag when ordered individually. If you have a group, the three- or six-mezze set is a good idea. A quick summary of recently ordered dishes: - Kubaneh (Yemeni pull-apart bread with za'atar & feta; $16) -- served warm, this oily, herbed, fragrant bread serves four or five in the large size. The large size comes with labneh. - Mezze (Choice of: 3 at $31 | 6 at $51). The six-mezze set includes all mezze offerings and comes with one piece of warm, herby flatbread, a slender baton that you'll probably want to supplement with at least one additional piece. The mezze include: 1. Japanese Eggplant Confit with roasted garlic, tomato jam, buttermilk, shabazi breadcrumbs; $10 2. Spicy Feta with Harissa BBQ, smoked salt; $12 3. Marinated Beets with Horseradish yogurt, chickpeas; $12 4. Matbucha with roasted tomato, sweet pepper dip; $12 5. Green Tahina with green schug; $12 6. Tzatziki with black garlic, date syrup; $12 Your tastes may differ, but my family is particularly fond of the beets. (The crisp chickpeas adds some fun textural contrast, the horseradish a punchy kick.) - Arayes (Ground lamb and dry aged beef stuffed pita, crisped on the plancha , served with labneh and grated tomato; $22) -- Listed under "small plates", this street food style dish could serve as a small main or a large snack depending on the size of your appetite. The filling is well seasoned, sometimes a touch dry, and best had with both the included labneh and a few mezze. - Crispy Roasted Lamb (Cucumbers, dates, walnuts, wild rice, shawarma spice; $48) -- We've had less-than-stellar versions of this dish so many times we ought to know better -- but the Pardner keeps ordering it, forgetting that he doesn't like it. I think the lamb used to be a shank cut, but is now a cross section of neck with vertebrae left in. Per the Pardner, it's too heavy on the fat and cartilage, and too wimpy on the meat to be enjoyable, though if you enjoy Caribbean oxtail stew or osso buco, you may disagree. On more than one occasion, the lamb has come charred to a nearly inedible state. (I'd guess that it is braised, but finished in the tabun to order.) The dish is more about the wild rice pilaf than the meat, which despite its apparent heft, is more of a flavoring agent. The pilaf is thankfully quite good, made with a generous amount of walnuts, a moderate amount of dried dates, some dried and fresh mint, and maybe a light touch of dill, which combine for a pleasant depth of flavor. - Chicken Schnitzel (Sumac fries, Israeli salad, tahina; $31) -- The schnitzel is well seasoned (including some black sesame seeds and pepper in the breading), well fried, an accessible option for picky eaters. (If you find this a useful reference point, the breading is not as thick as it is at Miriam, but is more strongly seasoned.) I was surprised to see the menu description of sumac fries, as the thin-cut potatoes seems unidimensionally salty to us, without the sour punch of sumac. - Plancha Seared Salmon (Pomegranate braised red cabbage, preserved lemon-apple butter; $37) -- Salmon is cooked to a perfect medium temperature in the tabun unless you request it otherwise, and served moist, not overcooked. By itself, the fish is mildly seasoned, but it pairs nicely with the caraway seed inflected, tender (but not mushy) red cabbage. I'm not usually a fan of creamy sauces with fish, but with the light / fresh effect of the crisp-tender apples, the accompanying butter sauce does not overwhelm. - Plancha Seared Daurade (Roasted asparagus, lemon potatoes, warm oregano vinaigrette; $37) -- This fish is served with the skin beautifully crisped, the asparagus crisp tender -- my favorite dish on the menu. Wine markups are pretty typical of NYC (2 to 2.5x). The 2023 Philippe Alliet Chinon (ripe red fruits, low tannin, easy drinking) went very well with the lamb and surprisingly well with the salmon. Pricey place good for a group or special occasions. The bar area is a very pretty place to sit. I came alone ,sat at the bar and ordered the apple martini. It was made with fresh apples and very refeshing. For my meal I ordered the flatbread which came out hot and fluffy, the eggplant dip which had tremendous flavor, the chicken liver mousse dip was my favorite and grilled broccolini which was fine but definitely overshadowed by the other three things. Anyways, decided to still come anyways but I will say that I'm a bit disappointed about the brunch. I will definitely come back and give it another shot because of the excellent reviews, but definitely for dinner this time. - Chicken Schnitzel - Was not impressed with this dish. The chicken was quite dry and flavorless. Wish they had some sauce for the chicken other than ketchup and mayonnaise which was more for the fries. I will say that the fries was quite good and I appreciated the cucumber/onion salad as well. - Poached Egg Khachapuri - This was definitely my more favorite dish out of the two. I actually really apprecaited the mushroom ragout on top which went well with the bread that was a bit thick and dense. The poached egg melting all over it was heavenly as well. - Complimentary Bread - +1 star for the variety of complimentary breads they had. Although none of them blew me out of the park - they had cornbread, chocolate croissant, and bread rolls - the variety was awesome and they both came with butter and strawberry jam. There are SO many better places to eat in NYC, why does this place have so much hype? The service is slow and inattentive. The food is mediocre at best (and usually worse than that). And then they charge you out the nose for it. Their mezze is puny proportion sizes. If you want more bread, it's extra cash. If you want vegetables instead of bread, they'll give you this massive bowl of ice with, like, four cucumbers stuck in it, and a few half cabbage leaves ringing the edges. And don't you dare ask for a printed receipt. They absolutely REFUSE to give you one of those. They will only give you a receipt if you give them your phone number... Was surprised with a Valentine's Day pre-fixe here, at Dagon. The pre-fixe presented a great variety of options. The portions were well-sized. The protein was cooked fantastically. The food here was hearty and delicious, and the Valentine's Day decor was fabulous. Heck, I got to keep myself a rose and the table was laid with rose petals. 10/0 for thoughtfulness. Here's what was on the roster: Amuse bouche (3/5) - this was a spoonful of creme fraiche, avocado mousse, and a nonexistent portion of caviar. This felt rather heavy, rich, and was the least impressive item we tried, almost making it unnecessary. The rest of the meal was incredible so I'll do myself a favor and forget I even tried this. Appetizers: Tuna Crudo (5/5) - this had well prepared chunks of tuna and fresh garnishes to spice and elevate the crudo. The star of this dish was the citrusy, punchy, sharp dressing that the rest laid on. Wish I could bottle it! Shishbarak (5/5) - this was almost like a cross between dumpling, and ravioli. Highly memorable and I can see this be a repeat on the menu, on a return visit. It had a great mushroom filling, toasted pine nuts and a yogurt-y sauce. What a combination! Entrees: Champagne poached Halibut (5/5) - very well prepared fish, velvety and luscious parsnip puree, and subtle sautéed spinach. This was an example of refined cooking. Crispy Roasted Lamb (4/5) - the portion size was unforgettable because of its generosity. The flavors were great, although, I would have liked some spice to accompany the sweetness from the dates and nuttiness of the black rice and walnuts. The lamb was prepared beautifully but the cut itself had much more fat than we could stomach. We took leftovers home and rendered the fat further before eating. This made it x2 better. Dessert: Labneh Cheesecake (5/5) - I really enjoyed this. The nutty base was a unique take on the typical graham cracker crust. The fresh mint and strawberries were a pleasant and vibrant addition. Perfect execution. Silan (4.5/5) - amazing textures, flavor, and what a hearty dessert. Almost a 5/5, but it did get a bit too sweet. Maybe something to palate cleanse or balance the sweetness would make this a 10/5. We also ordered a Red to accompany but were not too pleased by the flavor on the Cab Sauv. Dagon is one of the best mediterranean/middle eastern restaurants in the city and perhaps the best in uptown imho. I had a brunch there for a group of 5. We ordered 6 different mezzes to start with a few flatbreads that were freshly baked and light and fluffy. Each had a main and standouts were green shakshuka and schnitzel. Many places do schnitzel but I think they do the best. Chicken is cut thicker than most but very tender. The highlight of the meal was the halva desert with pistachio. It's by far the best desert I had as far as I can remember. I think each diner must get one. The service was excellent. Our server was very professional and made sure everything was smooth for my birthday. Pretty good! The interior is chic and it has a good energy without being super loud. We enjoyed the mezze, although they weren't standout compared to similar restaurants in NYC. The fish main was very good and the cocktails were nice. It was also fun to try an Israeli wine and the wine list is overall well-done. A nice place to check out! read more

Trendy UWS spot with a lively vibe, but not the experience we were hoping for. My boyfriend and I came in from out of town for dinner and were disappointed by how rushed everything felt. Within minutes of ordering, all of our food arrived at once, and the waiter kept checking in, making it hard to relax and enjoy the meal. The restaurant was also very loud, which took away from any romantic feel. Food was okay, but overall not memorable. Better for a quick, energetic night out than a slow, intimate dinner. read more

We planned a meal of their small plates, tapas-style. I asked the server if we should just order as we go, and she said no, she must take our entire order up front. I assumed they would course it out. But instead, 5 minutes later, before our drinks even arrived, they dumped all four orders on our table at the same time. How does a restaurant not know not to do this? So now we're rushing to eat everything before it gets cold. We basically were able to eat only half of the $100 of food we'd ordered, before the rest got cold. A manager came by and I was able to tell her what happened; she gave us a free dessert, but that didn't make up for the $50 of cold food still sitting on the table. 3 of us met for a 630 reservation. It's on Broadway at 91st, and street parking is very good around there, got a great spot. It's a large open space nicely decorated with ample room. Nice young vibe with a mix of ages, not a quiet space, but not exceptionally loud. This hint is not for everyone, their Martini are mini martinis even for Manhattan standards stop for a drink before you go. Starting with a small drink (nyc drinks are a pet peeve of mine) I thought I was going to be disappointed, however, I was wrong. Spencer out server was very good. The menu is out of the norm, but he patiently helped us navigate excellent choices. Hint I was pretty hungry and wanted to order some bread before we finalized our dinner order. A lot of restaurants won't allow you to order anything, but Spencer was cool with it and when I asked which one, he told us Kubaneh bread, a $19 bread. My wife gave me the look, but it was fantastic. A big loaf with a side of some spice in a yogurt saw. Huge way to start. 3 of us shared the everything. For apps we had the hummus and the potato pancakes served with apple sauce, a horseradish (maybe) dipping sauce and smoked salmon , excellent dish. We had 1 each, they were nice size, not thick and very crispy, a must have. The entree we shared the schnitzel and fish. Loved the schnitzel, very crispy, the way I prefer it with 3 dipping sauces. I'm not a fish guy, but my wife and friend are. So I left it to them. They picked the Dorade with Brussels sprouts. I'm not a fish guy and I hate Brussels sprouts . As I write this I forgot the Brussels sprouts was in the dish. It's more like a stew with large pieces of grilled onion in a thick red sauce. It was quite nice. Overall very good choices and while I was concerned if we ordered enough, unlike my drink, the food portions are very good. We're not desert people ( I like yodels and Mallomars) but they wanted the donuts. It's pretty cool, while you wait by the front door there's a woman pulling the dough to make the donuts. We had 3 and did I love them, no. I'm a more simple guy. I love a Krispy Creme. They were a bit odd for me. The best one was the chocolate it was mousy with a nice crunch in it. The pistachio was just ok and the 3rd I don't even remember. Finally have to give props to the service. Besides Spencer , Ralph I think the floor manager was on top of his game. He attended to every detail. The bus service was impeccable, filling water glasses, removing plates between course, cleaning the table then resetting for next course.
