Had Thanksgiving diner earlier today, a prix fixe $85 per person. I've eaten at Dagon a number of times since it opened and my feeling is that since the current chef took over the quality of the food has declined. Two or three years ago we had Thanksgiving there and the turkey entre was delicious. This year two of us had the turkey entry and the turkey was was dry and tasteless, the mashed potatoes bland, and the stuffing okay The lamb was good but the salmon was not cooked as ordered. The appetizers and the desserts were good. The service was good, though the server ignored us when we mentioned the dryness of the turkey. read more

Nestled on the north east corner of 91st and Broadway, Dagon serves Mediterranean food created in the kitchen of chef/partner Ari Bokovza. Their brunch menu features middle-eastern favorites like shashuka, mezze, lavash bagel w/cured salmon,and fattoush, while also including Mediterranean-influenced western entrees like cinnamon halvah French toast, brisket/shortrib burger and salmon eggs benedict served over challah bread. I arrived on a super rainy noontime with reservations for two and the restaurant was bustling. The interior is colorfully decorated with patterned floor and wall tiles and a wash of teal around the bar area which evokes a warm sun-kissed ambiance. Seating is enough for around 50-60 people and they can accommodate a variety of party sizes. We ordered: - whipped eggplant mezze $9: with tahini and preserved lemon compote, this was creamy and nutty with a little bit of citrus brightness from the lemon. - muhamarrah spicy roasted red pepper and almond $9: I didn't taste any heat in this but the flavor was good and almonds added a nice crunch. - flatbread $6: to accompany the mezze, this felt a bit much to charge for bread though it was well toasted with a tasty herb seasoning. - bread basket was complimentary : a few pieces of zataar cornbread, a couple small chocolate croissants, jam and butter, nothing too special about this. - shashuka $21: came with an individual flatbread. This was a hearty dish of tomato and eggs. Perfect cook on the eggs, just soft enough without being too runny. - chicken schnitzel $24: terrific version of this--crispy exterior, tender moist chicken. Impressive that they didn't overcook this considering how thin the chicken was pounded. The Israeli salad that came with it was fresh and flavorful, the fries were fresh and perfectly salted. Good tahini sauce too. Would recommend both this dish and the shashuka. - house coffee $5: pretty standard coffee though price for a regular coffee felt a little high. Service was knowledgeable and friendly though could be a little slow at times to get our waiter's attention. Our water was constantly being refilled though. One other thing to mentions the restaurant is very loud, we had to almost yell at each other across the table to have an audible conversation. Overall would recommend for a tasty brunch if you're in the neighborhood. read more

Wow ok. We had an amazing meal at Dagon. We made a same-day reservation which was quite seamless, probably since it was a nice day and they have a large outdoor area. We ordered: MEZZE - We got the 3 mezze sampler and we chose the spicy feta, the muhamarra, and the Japanese eggplant. All of them were amazing. The first two were surprisingly spicy and had a lot of flavor to them. The Japanese eggplant were perfectly executed- I particularly liked the tomato jam. SHISHBARAK - the dish here that everyone talks about! Incredible mushroom dumplings in a delectable sauce. TUNA CRUDO - nice and fresh. We enjoyed this but I'd say it was one of the lesser-memorable dishes of the night (meaning at any other place, it might've been the star of the show) CHICKEN SCHNITZEL - also a really nice dish. We split this; it was reasonably sized and had a good flavor to it. I didn't love the potato salad that came with it; was hoping it would be more of a traditional German potato salad, but no big deal. LABNEH CHEESECAKE - this was so good. We were full from dinner and still managed to finish this up. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. Bill came to $162 including two glasses of wine. We'll definitely be back. read more

Highly recommend. Not your standard basic middle eastern food and great service. The only call out is by about 7pm the inside was very loud (if you're older harder to hear). The Japanese eggplant mezze, flatbread, dumplings, and crispy cauliflower were delicious. The cigar was ok. The whole fish, branzino fillet, and lamb were very good. My brother and I picked this place for our parents' 40th anniversary dinner because we were already going to be in the neighborhood and we all like Israeli/Mediterranean food. Basically everything here was good- and we shared a ton of things- but really I can simplify it to this: get the Kubaneh bread with labne and thank me later. Service and ambience are good too. ** 5,100th review ** Amazing. This type of meal is what I love and miss about the city. My friends and I got rezzies for a weekend morning, and we sat outside under the huge street-side outdoor dining area. Dagon has a nicely curated brunch menu with familiar items but with a twist. I seriously would have had one of everything if possible. The bloody mary was on point - great flavors and a good amount of booze. I love a solid bloody mary to go with my brunch. I can't believe it, but I'd say the zucchini frittata was the best thing we ordered. Yup, veggies and eggs. But it had an amazing texture, flavor, and managed to be super airy despite being packed with veggies. Go for the Jerusalem bagel. The presentation alone is awesome, and the texture and taste was just like I remember from Israel. (Check out my Yelp profile photo!) They provided ample lox, as well. Decent UWS brunch joint. It was very easy to make a reservation last minute for a big group which was nice. The restaurant has tons of seating both inside and outside and pretty cute interior decor. I ordered the Poached egg Khachapuri and it was good, maybe a little expensive for the portions but also I feel like that applies to most NYC brunch nowadays. I also tried my friend's avocado omelette which was ok but the potatoes that came with it were fire and super crispy. Service was slow though, it took like 30+ min for food to come out. Overall would not be my go to brunch spot but convenient option if in the area! read more

Forget "new" (sorry, not sorry, NY Post). Dagon is one of THE best overall restaurants on the UWS. I'll start with the drinks--and you should too. The cocktails are excellent. A friend visiting from Texas tried the TLV Old Fashioned (with the very fun fig-infused bourbon) and proclaimed it the best he ever had. The second and third TLV were just as good. The small plates are fantastic and perfect for sharing. More than once, we've ordered all of them plus a Jerusalem bagel and a mezze platter and bypassed the entrees all together. It makes for a fun and diverse meal. The star of the show every time though, is the Tunisian Cigar. The mouthwateringly flavorful lamb is folded and crisped to the perfect snappy texture. It is a must. The only inconsistency in the Dagon experience, if there is one, is the waiter service. Sometimes it's excellent, sometimes less so. Though our water glasses were constantly refreshed by the attentive bussers, on our most recent visit, the waiter was a bit of a rolling stone. He did not appear to take our order for 10-15 minutes. And I'm not sure that he ever reappeared after. Still, the drinks, food, and overall experience are so good, we will keep coming back every chance we get. read more

A lovely location right off the subway in a nice neighborhood. We liked the vibe and had a nice dinner with our nyc friends. Shared some early plates and they had entrees that ranged from cod, to kebabs to chicken. The two salads were delicious. Loved the fennel. And the octopus was tasty and full of flavor. Super pretty on the inside. Lots of cute pastel teal and yellow furniture and bright lights. The food was overall pretty ok though. We came in for brunch on a Sunday during Restaurant Week, but it turns out that they only serve their Restaurant Week menu during the weekdays. I ordered the tuna sandwich which came with olive oil poached tuna, hard boiled egg, potato, cucumber, and lemon. Interestingly the ingredients were all pretty shredded/flaky inside of the sandwich, but I was hoping for a more substantial bite. I also tried the poached egg khachapuri, which was listed under the eggs benedict section and was a slab of Georgian bread with two eggs on it with truffled mushroom ragout. While it looked great, I think the bread itself was quite doughy and could've been more flavorful. I appreciated the complimentary breads that came with our order, which consisted of pain au chocolats, cornbread, dinner rolls, butter, and jam. We had rolls with a yogurt dip which was excellent, and shirt steak (also very good) and a nice bottle of Cote d'Rhone. The fact is, if yelp had six stars, I would give this restaurant six stars, every single dish from the signature cocktail to the bread to the eggplant, The Moroccan, carrots, the Kubaneh bread--perfect. The lamb melted in your mouth, carrying with it complex, luscious spices, extraordinary richness, and perfect balance with a sauce just acidic enough to pull the flavors together. Some friends and I stopped in here on a Thursday night for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated right away. We all ordered a round of drinks. They have a pretty large menu of wine, beers, cocktails and NA cocktails, so you should be able to find something that meets your needs. We shared the trio mezze (Spicy Feta, Muhamarra, Tahina) and Charred Octopus. I ordered a softshell crab special as my main. The food was overall pretty good. The Mezze were standard and the octopus had a nice flavor. I enjoyed the softshell crab, as it was something different. Portion were pretty small for the shared plates and we ran out of bread for the mezze; however, on the flip side our entrees were all pretty large. Ambiance was nice. It has a cool, Mediterranean interior. We were seated at a table near the doorway, which wasn't ideal as we were hit with a blast of cold air every time the door opened. It's also pretty noisy, so not a place for an intimate conversation. Service was just ok. Our server was nice, but they weren't attentive. It took a long time to take our order and to bring out food/drinks after we ordered. Overall, Dagon is a nice spot to visit if you're on the UWS and want Mediterranean food. The mezze's were all very good. The chicken liver patte was the most unique one and my favorite. The fresh and hot pita is great and they will bring you more if needed. The sausage in the Marguez was a little too salty for me but the cornbread base in the Benedict was perfect and rich. read more

The ambiance was also fantastic and the service was quick and attentive ( i dropped my fork twice whoops and got a new one both time although i did have to flag someone down). My friend had mentioned that this place was great for mediterranean tapas and I'm so glad I came to check this place out! I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food was here. We came for happy hour (4-6pm) and had beat the crowd which came in around 6 pm. The ambiance is great and definitely a cute place to come for a date. The service was also wonderful. We ordered the flatbread, bass, and cauliflower. My favorite was the flatbread!! The bass was not bad but not what I expected. It took quite a long time for the bass to come out and wasn't as buttery as I'm used to for bass. The portions here are also relatively large. I was so excited to come here due to the menu, but I just wasn't that excited about the taste of the food we tried. We started with the tahini and the flatbread. The tahini was okay, but it had a lot of olive oil in it, which was delicious - but it seemed to clash with the taste of the tahini and just felt complicated. The flatbread was fresh and warm. It was a good dipping bread and perfect for dipping into the variety of spreads offered as appetizers. For a main meal, I went with the chicken schnitzel. It just tasted very dry and needed some sort of moisture (maybe a lemon?). My husband tried the BBQ chicken and thought it was fine. I wasn't super hungry so I got the Fattoush Salad which was super refreshing and the addition of pita chips gave it a nice crunch. Our servers were accommodating to our larger group late in the evening and made sure we were warm under the heat lamps when sitting outside on a cold night. My first time dining at Dagon and they made me feel like I was a regular. My plan was to eat at the bar, the hostess greeted me and seated me right away. Dagon has a casual vibe with a sophisticated atmosphere. The bartenders were both incredibly attentive but Delaney was the one who handled the majority of my ordering, and she was fantastic. Dagon has extended the restaurant week menu which was a bonus. The Israeli/Mediterranean menu has so many options. If you are on the UWS or not Dagon is well worth a visit. I was here with two others and overall I can see why most people love this place. The service was pleasant; recommending dishes and how to order enough. In terms of my cocktail, I went with the Dagon Sour with orange vodka, fig, citrus, infused arak, rose, and almond (topped with a dehydrated orange slice.) Not exactly sure what the arak was infused with but said prominent flavor was the arak which I really don't mind as I'm a big fan of aniseed. Other people had wine and their rose lemonade which they liked a lot. We started with the mezze where we got the three option version which was served with a very tasty bread topped with za'atar. Sasso Chicken Liver: Mustard Seeds, Date Syrup (*,) Crispy Shallots, Baharat. The chicken liver was excellent and while I found the date syrup to be a bit sweet compared to the usual accompaniments, it did go well with the chicken and this was definitely my favorite. Whipped Eggplant: Tahina, Preserved Lemon Compote. This was essentially their spin on baba ganoush with a slightly different texture. The lemon compote added a fun spin and some sourness though it could have been a bit more sour. Good. Sardines: Figs, Hazelnuts (?) Balsamic reduction (?) This was the daily special. Not positive what it came with though this is my partial recollection. This was very tasty also. For the main dish, two of us went with the lamb and the other person got the black bass which was ordered filet style (which came with three big pieces and it was also good though I found the sauce too lightly flavored.) Someone also got the Israeli salad for whatever reason on the side which was a fun spin though I didn't care for it much though I'm usually not a fan so take that with a grain of salt. Crispy Roasted Lamb: Shwarma Spice, Wild Rice With Dates(*) And Walnuts, Pickled Cucumbers (side) A lot of other people were ordering us and I can see why. This was easily one of the best lamb dishes I have had in recent memory. The outside the lamb had a fun crispiness and the inside was tender enough to just use a fork or spoon. The rice was outstanding with the sweetness complementing the lamb while the walnuts added some fun texture and reduced said sweetness. My only complaint is that I would prefer a stronger pickled cucumber for the side and that it was a bit small but that's just personal preference. While this dish was expensive, it's highly recommended and two people could probably share it along with a small plate. After finishing, they decided to share a dessert (labneh cheesecake, was alright) and I went with the silan which was highly recommended by the waiter along with the malabi. Silan: Caramel Rice Crispies, Pistachio, Almonds, Tahini Mousse, Vanilla Sponge, and Vanilla Ice Cream Covered With Shredded Halva and Date(*) Syrup (the Silan in the Silan) Well this was unique and excellent. This dish had a ton of fun textures with everything mixing well. I can't exactly describe it outside of being unique though if you're not a fan of halva, I wouldn't recommend it as it has a strong sesame flavor. My only complaint is that the bowl it is in spills very easily. I would potentially serve it on a larger plate so the halva doesn't get everywhere but no complaints otherwise. Overall the food here was excellent. No major complaints outside of the price point though it is expected being on the UWS. We were brought here by my brother as we were visiting the area and needed to grab brunch - and I'm so glad we got to try this restaurant! The food was very good, the dips were tasting and they even gave us extra bread as we needed more to finish all the different dips. The Flatbread was also quite good, and I know other people enjoyed their Katchipuri and Shaksuka. But the cheesecake was the true winner for me. It was so light and not too sweet! The service was fine, from order taking to the food getting to the table, nothing extraordinary but nothing poor either. The inside is a nice restaurant with nice tableware and dishes, the music playing was on theme and not too loud either. My daughter was here in June and said we had to try it together. It was so so good! We shared the tuna crudo. It was the most refreshing starter and the best I have had because the tuna was in cubes and extremely satisfying. We then had the mushroom dumplings. They are called Shishbarak .
