We eat at Crogan's every couple of months or so. What I like about Crogan's is that it's a white tablecloth kind of restaurant that kids dig too, and you almost never need reservations on a weekday night. The entrees can be somewhat uneven. Be careful about ordering anything too fancy or trendy, and you should ALWAYS ask for the salad dressing on the side if you don't like lettuce swimming in dressing. But you can get a decent steak or pasta dish, with actual in-season veggies, and your child should be happy with the burger or the fish & chips. And since it's a bar too, you can enjoy your martini or your draft beer while your child demolishes the bread and butter that comes to table immediately after sitting down. This is not the place to come if you are looking for fabulous cooking, but it's very suitable for an enjoyable family dinner on a week night. read more

This place is a neighborhood restaurant with friendly staff and good food. Good place with or without kids. We went to Crogans recently and had a good time. I had the Almond Crusted Sole which was very good. My husband had the chicken parmesan sandwich which he recommends, and the kids had a pizza which was also good. The food and service is not always perfect --hit or miss. I've had the pork chop come out very dry, and I've had fish that was frozen inside. Service can be pretty slow but servers are nice. Overall it is recommended but not always consistent. read more

I mostly agree with Susan and Leigh. My parents, in their late 60's early 70's have been long time customers of Crogan's and have an attachment to it. I've had family dinners there with them since the late 80's. They were weekly customers. Were is the operative word. The last few times there were very, very disappointing. The service has become incredibly slow, particularly from their younger, more surly staff. Food is left under the heat lamps for a very long time before it's served. I noticed the decline over a year ago. Now even my parents won't go there, and their taste buds are practically made of titanium at this point. read more

Our friends ate here recently & really liked it... since we have similar tastes, my husband & I decided to dine here last night. We were very pleased. Atmosphere was very nice... even though it is a noisy place, you dont really feel like you are a part of that noise since tables are a nice distance from each other. Its roomy & comfortable. (very important for me) Service was polite & attentive. We started with crab cakes & Mediterranean salad. Salad was very much to my liking. My husband's crab cakes were ok. He would have liked them much better without the sauce on top which tasted like it had quite a bit of ketchup in it. Entrees - Ahi Tuna & Gumbo. Gumbo was a success. Ahi Tuna was very good as well. I was hoping it wouldnt be overcooked & it was just perfect.... rare. We also got 2 desserts.... i wish we didnt because we were so stuffed.... but oh well.... Biegnets & bread pudding were both very good. Coffee was nice & strong. Overall we were very happy with our dining choice. It was a 30 minute drive, so we would be really disappointed if it didnt work....BUT IT DID! Will definitely be back to try brunch & sample some of these nice looking sandwiches.... read more

OMG, the bread pudding is the best I've ever had, complete with whiskey sauce, pecans and raisins... Hard to find words to express just how good it is. The rest of the menu, meh, pretty unremarkable, though the service is fine, atmosphere is just okay. An old standard, Montclair landmark, glad to see Crogan's is still doing what they do best. I don't go to Crogan's all that frequently, but every time I have gone it's been a really pleasant experience. I generally order the same thing every time I've been there: a french dip with either the beer battered onion rings or a cup of french onion soup, and a Sierra Nevada or glass of red wine to drink. Each and every time the service has been great and the food delicious. The hostess makes for some nice eye-candy as well! I'm not really bothered by the noise from the bar, but I could see it being annoying if I were having a formal dinner with my family or something. Anyway, this place is starting to grow on me to become one of my favorite restaurants. read more

This place was very nice. Good food & fast service, but relaxed atmosphere. Descent prices. My friend didn't feel his pasta special was all that special. The portion was kind a small. On the flip side, I had the signature French Onion soup, which was everything a good FOS should be. Kudos. And, I had the crab club house sandwich on sour dough. Crab meat on a sandwich is difficult to control, but I managed and every morsel eventually got into my mouth. I love real fresh dungeness crab. I'd go back to Crogan's. read more

I'm always happy to end up at Crogan's when I'm in the area. I like that it's a "sort of" sports bar- you can watch the game but it not like other sports bars with a dozen tv's and a lot of noise. 8:00 walk in party of 2 on Wednesday night 5/2. First (and last) time visit. Dining room was virtually empty; bar was about half occupied. Not only were we not greeted by the person at the host station (tall skinny guy with dark hair), we were ignored by him without even an acknowledgement of our presence for at least 5 minutes while he entered information on a computer screen. We finally seated ourselves at a high top in the bar where a very attentive female waiter finally noticed us and took our order. She was the only positive thing about the experience. Fish & Chips were ordinary at best and the burger was under cooked despite a request for well done. Clearly a lot of regular bar people with whom the wait and bar staff engaged, but not a friendly place or one where you go for the quality or uniqueness of the food. read more

So, supposidly this place is "the spot" in Montclair to eat, but I gotta say that I wasn't impressed. First off, it is SOOO INCREDIBLY LOUD in there. the food is pretty good, but its not like its that hard to master the three items on the menu: steak, chicken cooked like steak, or pasta. The service was pretty good, but I think that was because we were a party of 11. Not only was my margarita put in to a cup the size of a sippy cup, but the parking was atrocious too. To start off with, they lose 1 star for uncomfortable seats. There's almost nothing worse than trying to dine while jammed into a tight seat. Granted my posterior is larger than most but nonetheless, I gotta sit somewhere. I've lived in this area for 45 years but this is my 1st experience at Crogans. I went there today for lunch. I found it to be extremely noisy. It made table discussions difficult. I had the "famous" hamburger & fries. It was overcooked - asked for med rare, got med well. It tasted OK so I let it go by. The fries were OK but nothing to write home about. Had a couple of cocktails & they were again OK. I thought it was a little high priced for lunch but there you go. the service was adequate - middle of the road. Overall rating 3 stars - middle of the road less 1 star for the seating. Crogan's lacks quality control over its food and its service. And that's obvious by reading the following reviews. So whatever review written here may not be your experience if you decide to give Crogan's a try. Having said that: My wife and I have been going to Crogan's since long before the big fire that gutted the place many years ago. We have typically found the fish and chips to be the best in town and the service is quite well trained, prompt, and non intrusive. [We do not use the bar, which seems to have a problem] The steak and salad for lunch is an excellent high protein meal, and the gumbo is superb. But of all the meals, their lamb shanks with fresh mash are about as good as it gets. I think what others have called bland tasting is what I would call not salty, which is what I like about Crogan's food in general...it's not salty. This is not gourmet food...it is pub food; aka, comfort food. But sometimes it's nice to be comforted. read more

Crogan's used to be my local hangout. They did a great job with the remodel after the "fire". Great old bartender that has been there forever who serves generous drinks at fair prices. The bar is a Cal sports memorabilia area with 3 or 4 TVs, it can get pretty loud earlier in the evening. Sometimes the service is a little slow, but not a big problem. You can order your dinner in the sports bar or even the bar itself if you prefer not to go to the main dining room. Lots of good appetizers to choose from. People are friendly and there are lots of locals. The dining room is a nice transition and relatively quiet. The servers are friendly here. As for the food, they have a vast menu and regular daily specials. You can eat here every day and depending on what you want, Italian, Cajun, seafood, American pub, and kids menu choices are good. You can get a good steak, or seafood and they will cook it the way you ask. Good steak with salad if you want something light, or crab sandwich (ask them to toast or grill the bread). The burgers are big which my wife and kid usually split. You don't need to dress up to be seated in the dining room and you won't feel out of place. you can choose to sit in a booth or at a table with linen. Not necessary for reservations. Lastly, they have a good Sunday brunch, went once but remember it being kind of pricey. read more

We give this place a shot once every 3 years or so. I truly have no idea how they stay in business with the food they serve. The hostess was lovely....we needed to wait 20-25 minutes on a Saturday night for a table of three. That's fine....and we met some fun people who were sitting in the bar finishing up a meal so the time went quickly. Got to the table, and again met great people at a huge party of 10 or 12 that was next to us. So the stars are basically for the clientele we met. The floor was filthy. The tablecloth had a big stain on it. The drink orders were taken, but the waiter came back and took our food orders before the drinks arrived....a total no no. Hubby's steak had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. He couldn't believe it. Daughter's caesar salad had no flavor whatsoever. My girlled fish tacos were ok - but had some kind of thousand island dressing on them....huh? The service was rushed and impersonal. Frankly I don't know why I'm giving them 2 stars. Okay...I'm not...just changed it to one star. Ugh....never again. read more

Really enjoyed the dining experience here with my mother and daughter. My daughter wanted some Beignets (French doughnuts) and I was doubtful that this restaurant served them so she asked our waiter. In the most cheerful and confidant response Mia replied yes of course we do, so we ordered some. We enjoyed the beignets, omelet and black bean soup. Everything was great and the next table over kept eyeing our beignets and they ordered some for their table as well. The service Mia provided was excellent and made us feel special. We laughed with the next table about the beignets on our way out and wished them well. I have been to this restaurant several times, each enjoyable, this one was the best. Been coming here off & on for MANY years ~ stopped by the other night for a quick bite to eat before heading to the Massive Attack/Thievery Corporation show @ the Greek. The grilled chicken sandwich was pretty good, the fries were DELICIOUS!! And the 'wedge' salad was awesome! creamy, yummy goodness. Great old skool cocktails. I saw a mixed review of this place on TV. One lady said it is a place where everyone knows you name so that was enough for me to give it a try. I agree it could be because it appeared to be a regular hangout for quite a few characters. The day we went (Friday afternoon) there were only a few people but the few were loud and lively. Which by the way I like. If I wanted quite I could stay home. As for the food we had the best popcorn shrimp, with a spicey aioli sauce, 2nd best I've ever had, along with a tasty Cubano and crispy sweet potato fries. All was excellent. The fries cooked to perfection, crispy and thick. Everything we ordered is repeatable which is important. The number one question a restaurant should ask when you are done eating is "Would you order that again" and if the answer is no then something is wrong. The bartender said he loves their burger so I will have to change it up next time if we return. I only say if because we are never in that area but if in the area it is worth a special trip. I suggest head straight to the bar, the dining room wasn't my type of atmosphere. Also - remember to pay for parking. We didn't realize we had to pay and thank goodness we were not busted. Crogan's is the family standby place. We don't even have to mention the name, just text message "lunch" or "dinner" and the time, and we know where to go. Every member of the family can find something to eat there, which is why we've been going there for more than a decade. The ownership changed a bit a few years ago, and the menu has changed slightly in that time, becoming a bit better. Be sure to ask for the specials, as that's usually what's happening. Unfortunately, the wait staff keeps disappearing (turnover is a lot heavier than it used to be), but usually the service is timely and attentive unless it's really really busy. Speaking of busy, though, some others have figured it out; Crogan's is a lot busier than it used to be. Try not to sit too close to the bar, and opt for a booth if they have one; it's quieter in there. read more

This was my 1st time @ Crogan's and I found it to be a very nice & warm place to eat. Have been trying to eat here for over a yr, but due to parking problem never seemed to make it. I had the Goldern Bear Hamburger, French Onion Soup, & Potato Skins. EVERYTHING was just great. Food & Service.
