Two or three weeks ago, I would have given 4 stars. But tonight my third Friday happy hour I decided to actually look at my check once I was sitting at home. Today during hh my friend and I had an order of fries, calamari, two lemon drops and two Tanquery and tonics for a whopping tab of $60.00 which included a little over $8.00 tip. Now maybe that doesn't seem so high but their hh menu boasts $5 premium liquors so I'm thinking hey not bad, but guess what the liquor is $5 but if you want a squeeze of lemon or sour mix that cost more! so my $5.00 drink was really $8.50! Now $8.50 is not too bad but why not just list the drink as $8.50 you know why because at $8.50 it's no longer the happy hour price it's the same price if you have a lemon drop at 9:30 pm or 5:30 pm. How deceitful! Then the manager wants to argue back that it's not deceitful I just read it wrong really!!! Why not tell your patrons how your pricing works! So you know those shoes you just got on sale?? well they are in fact on sale for $59.99 but if you want the shoelaces that's another $10 sooooo is it really on sale??? Never again! First of all the pint of Guinness is very good. I know of two other places in the East Bay of whom that could be said so that is a big thing. No place in the East Bay that I know of has an excellent pint of Guinness, for that you have to go to SF or the South Bay. I really have to either take notes or do my reviews sooner because, even with the aid of a menu, I cannot remember what we ate but I do know that both of us liked it. Last night daughter and I were at local toy store when went thru our maps app to find a close place to eat. Lo and behold Crogans was right on the corner, we waited about 6 min. to be seated. The place was hopping! I ordered corned beef and cabbage. Daughter ordered braised beef. Both were fork tender!! My daughter also ordered the french soup which I've never been a fan of til I had a bite of hers. It was fantastic. I think I ate half of it. Waiter think it was Mark?, was very attentive. We had a great time and great food. I will definitely make this my new go to place. read more

Looks like a restaurant you'd see in Kitchen Nightmares. Says its an Irish Pub but it looks like any run-of-the-mill family restaurant. Lousy beer & wine selection. The Montclair family and older folks set is all about Crogan's. My in laws go fairly regularly, meaning that I end up there on occasion as well. They seem to like it but do complain about the noise at the bar. There is an odd mix of sports bar noise and classic white tablecloth decor that begs for a bit of serenity. Food is pretty blah but the specials (mostly for meateaters) always sound interesting. As for veggie options, the standard few exist (Garden burger, pasta, soup and salad) but seem to be more of an afterthought as is too often the case in such restaurants. Fairly slow service whether it's busy or practically empty. I know I'll be back and it won't be the worst thing in the world, though. I guess this is a more of a 2.5 star review, but damn, Montclair needs to step up their game with some higher quality restaurants. read more

So can anyone tell me what's up with the bartender? This is the second time I've stopped in for a drink, and honestly, won't make that mistake again! He is without any personality, seems to be having a perpetually bad day, scowls when you ask for something as simple as more ice - it's ridiculous. If you really hate your job that much, quit. A friendly outgoing bartender is something that will always keep me coming back, and this dude is the anti-friendly hospitable bartender. Pay attention management - I'm not the first person who has said this, and the other folks sitting the bar were all in agreement the guy was just plain nasty. I have been going here for about 8 years. They have had their ups and downs but the last few years have been excellent. I am pretty sure they have a new GM and he seems to have changed things for the better. Food is great..... Hamburger, Fish and Chips and the pot roast are a few of my favorites. As requested by Mike, the GM of Crogan's, we decided to give the restaurant another try about a week ago. Unfortunately, this experience wasn't much better than the first and here's why: My husband ordered the reuben and when it came out it was completely cold, as in just came out of the fridge cold. The cheese wasn't even melted. Our server was quick to rectify the situation but, seriously, how is it even possible to send out a reuben before it's been toasted? Based on the recommendations of other reviewers, I ordered a steak this time and I will state that it was a pretty good steak overall. The roasted potatoes were also decent and the broccoli rabe would have been good too except it had way too much garlic and salt, to the point that I couldn't finish it. Now, I usually don't throw in a restaurant's decor or ambiance into a review because I usually don't have to. But since Mike mentioned in his comment that decor is part of the reason they charge $7+ (now it's 8.95) for some kraft mac & cheese and a small drink I figured it's worth noting my experiences here as well. The general feel of the restaurant itself is just "ok" but the bathroom is only a step above what I've seen at the Dublin Hooters. Seriously, the bathrooms at Lucky are nicer and Crogan's is charging $17.95 for fried chicken? Now why am I picking apart something that most people won't even see? Because it seems to match this restaurant's modus operandi perfectly. On the surface you're given the illusion that this is a much nicer restaurant than it really is. But once you start taking a closer look at the details, it's clear that the prices being charged simply don't align with what you're getting back in return. When I spend the kind of money on a meal that's being charged at Crogan's, I EXPECT quality food and preparation and there's really no excuse why Crogan's can't deliver on this promise. There are literally hundreds of restaurants in the East Bay that do this successfully. Grand Tavern is one that immediately comes to mind as we just had an excellent meal there last night and spent roughly the same amount of money. Since it's clear I'm not alone in my assessments of this establishment, here are some recommendations for improvement. First, if you're going to list decor as a justification for your prices, you better by God deliver on that statement. You lost major credibility points after it was clear that your attention to detail doesn't extend much beyond what someone can see from outside the windows. Second, if you're going to claim you have expert preperation of your foods, learn to season correctly and NEVER send a heated sandwich out cold. There's absolutely no excuse for an oversight like that, especially when your restaurant isn't even busy. Finally, focus on what you do well and forget the rest. Several other reviews pointed out that the gumbo simply isn't good, so why continue to list it on your menu? It certainly isn't helping to win you long-term customers. In the end, I would really like to see this restaurant improve. Its location to us is fantastic, which makes it all the more disappointing that it's so bad. So let us know when you've revamped your menu and we'll give it another try. In the meantime, we'll be taking our business elsewhere. read more

Okay, first off, if you fancy yourself a gourmet or a foodie, this isn't the place for you. Stop reading now and check out Oliveto instead. But if you're looking for a friendly yet casual dining experience that's a step up from one of the chains, Crogan's is perfect. The white tablecloths and roomy booths make it a great place for a business lunch, a gathering with friends, or even an afternoon out with parents/grandparents. It definitely skews older; I wouldn't take a date here and it's definitely not a teen hangout, but hey, it is what it is. The bar area is roomy and always seems to have good (sports) stuff on the TVs. The big windows that open onto the street are a great touch and make it a fun place to hang out on a warm evening or weekend. The food? In my opinion, suprisingly good. I have eaten there probably dozens of times (most often for the aforementioned business lunch) and have literally never been disappointed. I'm a particular fan of the Cobb salad and their burgers. One of the best features of Crogan's is its very extensive menu. Whether you're in the mood for plain old American cuisine, pasta, shellfish, or Asian-inspired food, it's all there, making it an easy crowd-pleaser. As for the rude waitstaff behavior described by others? I'm somewhat shocked. Other than sometimes having to wait a little while for the host or hostess to seat me, I've never felt the service to be rude, subpar, or in any way lacking. To the contrary, I've occasionally felt like I've been overattended to with water refills, more bread, etc. And all the waitstaff has been friendly to me. Could be because I'm usually there for lunch and it's a different crew than in the evenings. But I'm hoping these are just isolated incidents. Oh, and it's also kid-friendly. I've taken my little ones with me several times on weekends and they're very accommodating with strollers, high chairs, and the like. However, the clientele may not be as casual about your rollicking toddlers as a place like Cactus Taqueria in Rockridge, but then again, that's to be expected. They have this half-pound burger you can order, with the patty having the perfect meat:fat blend ratio. I ask for my burgers to be grilled medium-well and the cook did a nice job. It's all about the condiments too lol. I opted for the steak-cut wedge fries, which were crispy outside and soft inside. The waitress we had was so bubbly, her personality was just infectious (in a good way). I was happy with my meal, and had a parking space just outside the bar area on La Salle, which made the experience even better. read more

Food here is passable but I wouldn't bother. Got a salad with grilled chicken. How bad could it be? The chicken slices were literally like cardboard - so dry and flavorless, probably because it wasn't cooked fresh. Couldn't eat it. The salad itself was limp, with hardly any vegetables other than lettuce. Forget the dressing. I'll spare you. The one thing I did like was the carrot cake -- it's locally made and mad deeeelish. Went to crograns with my family on Memorial Day, we had lunch a late lunch and thought we would take advantage of their happy hour ADVERTISED with their SIGN posted outside.. When the bill came we were charged for regular price... apparently there is no happy hour on holidays! Rather than fix our bill, as I would as a business owner, they said that was the policy. How about not have a sign out there that promotes happy hour?!! Anyway, we typically go there 2x a month.. We dropped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Place was a buzzing as the 2 local baseball teams were at bat. No lag time, water & bread plate delivered straight away. Wait staff was extraordinarily charming, no hesitation at recommending/stating the "house specialty" . Menu is so complete and varied to appease the most persnickety diner. Garlic fries are a MUST! Crogan's used to be in our rotation of take out places, but now that the chef has changed and the menu has changed, it's officially out of the rotation. Most recently we ordered two salads. No drinks, no bread, just the skimpy salads and the total was $24!! C'mon,! The salads have always been expensive, but at least they used to be good and the chef was generous with the ingredients, but now, the salads are just as expensive but smaller and not as tasty. It seems like restaurants have different approaches to hard economic times, it seems that the owners of Crogans have decided to lower the quality and quantity of the food but keep their prices the same. Not a good approach from my perspective. Next time my grandma comes for dinner or brunch, we may still go there, but other than that, Crogan's is no longer on the short list of takeout options. read more

Nice location in Montclair Village - on the corner front and center on LaSalle and Moraga. The interior is nice too, with big windows and televisions by the bar. The food however leaves a lot to be desired. Service was alright, but it's too expensive for the quality of food. read more

The response to my very poor review of this place was ridiculous. The owner of this place is delusional. The hamburger that I received said, "we don't want you here." It was that poorly prepared - charred on one side (not a problem at all) but the charred part on the other side had been almost completely torn off, exposing raw hamburger I only wanted to get out as quickly as possible. This is one of our favorite go-to restaurants monthly. We especially love the paella and the rib eye steaks! Also, we LOVE the Oakland United (I think that is the name) beer, but a lot of the time, by Saturday they have already sold out of it. The staff there is always upbeat and friendly. We have never had bad service. One of our favorite waitresses is Camille and we will be glad when she returns from her sojourn. All of the wait staff are pleasant, though. Wonderful place! read more

My salad was blah, they dressed the salad and it wasn't great. My husbands was very good. The fish tacos come in flour tortillas which is kinda funky., he said they were ok. DON'T BOTHER! I have been going to Crogans for many years, but in the last 2 years it has tanked. I'm not a big yelper, but I feel the need to warn others tonight. I ordered the apple, walnut and feta salad for $9.95. There are 2 very very thin slices of apple and zero feta in what looks like old lettuce. Bagged salad for $2.99 at Safeway is way better! I can't believe they have the nerve to serve this. I also ordered the crab cakes for $13.95. Now, I understand that crab is expensive so I asked about how large are the crab cakes. I was told the size of a chips ahoy cookie, but way thicker. Uh - not even close. So, for $24 I have no dinner and am disgusted. A waste of time and money. read more

This restaurant always looked busy so we decided to give it a try this weekend. I asked for a Madras - OJ, cranberry juice and vodka - but was served a Seabreeze. Any decent bartender should know the difference. Moving on to dinner, the prime rib was tasteless, the sirloin steak was grainy and lousy. The garlic mashed potatoes also felt grainy and like it was made with instant mashed potato mix. It was obvious that the owners are trying to turn quite a profit by charging a decent bundle for low grade ingredients. To top it all off, our waitress gave us service with a snarl. Maybe it's because I'm not used to living in the Bay Area, or maybe because I'm not rich. Not sure, but I thought the dishes at this place were just way over-priced. Yeah, we ate there anyway. I got the chicken linguine. I would hope that at such a high-priced restaurant the chicken would be nice and tender and moist and juicy, but no such luck. Like I said, I could've gotten that at Applebee's for half the price. Seriously. And, it would've been just as good. My husband got the meatloaf, which came with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. I tried a bite and thought it was okay. He says it was delicious, but we were both very hungry after hiking at the Redwood Regional Park nearby. You know how guys are. Haha. The menu had all these symbols on it but no key to let the customer know what they meant, so we had to ask. Most of the menu items didn't say anything about what comes with them, such as the French Dip and the Meatloaf, so we had to ask. They are just making it more work on the wait staff. The menu offers a Gumbo with andouille sausage, chicken, and topped with crab. The problem? You have to search for the chicken, the sausage, and the crab that was to have been on top, turned out to be a "pinch" of crab! It came with approximately, a cookie dough scoop of rice and some green onions! The meal came in two sizes. A cup or a bowl. The to go bowl was approximately 8 ounces. The cost was exhorbitant! $17.40! It was more like a bowl of soup! Their steaks, chops, burgers, fish n chips, salads, etc. are the "safe" items! LEAVE THE SPECIALTY ITEMS ALONE! Service is rude, the staff of snooty girls act like they could care less and I kid you not ... I have lived in the area for most of my life, and have considered Crogan's sort of a home away from home. I've just started writing Yelp Reviews and thought I'd give them a shout out for being a consistently enjoyable place. Wether dropping in for a few drinks at the end of the day or meeting a friend for dinner, the atmosphere is friendly, the food is always good and the price is never too high! Been coming here since I was 7 years old! It's a few minutes away from Piedmont so we come here at least once a week. Great friendly staff and typical American fare. My personal favorite is the crab sandwich or the brick chicken. Nothing out of the ordinary or innovative on the menu but a completely reliable restaurant and decent prices. I'm sorry to say, that when we went there a few months ago, there were cockroaches crawling on the wall at the booth our group was sitting in. After we pointed that out to the waiter, they did find another place for us to sit that was not a booth (thus no walls for the cockroaches to crawl on next to us). Still didn't feel right as once you see a cockroach, there is an excellent chance that, that is just the tip of the iceberg. The manager came out and said that they had been indeed having cockroach problems but were in the process of taking care of that. I believe they comped us a few sodas. No second chances... there are too many other clean and good restaurants as options here in the Bay Area. I can't stomach the thought of going back there. It was also horrible to smell the smokers who lingered outside the bar part of the restaurant. The smoke came wafting into the restaurant and was disgusting. That in and of itself, qualifies as a deal breaker in my book. No more Crogans for me! read more

This is a good place to come with your grandmother. We come here a lot with Nana and she loves it. They have a lot of old-fashioned staples and it's just one of those old time "nice" restaurants. Service can be a little slow, but the food is good. The clam chowder is very good. You'll see lots of multi-generational families here. read more

I went to Crogan's for dinner with my grandmother and my ladyfriend. The idea was that it was supposed to be a nice meal for all of us to share. I'm from los angeles and had never been to Crogan's. My grandmother suggested it and so I decided to give it a chance. Since my grandmother was treating, my gf and I felt compelled to hold our tounges at the time, however, under normal circumstances, we would have sent back every item we were served. I should mention that I am not pretentious at all when it comes to food. I have had many meals at places like Denny's, Chillis, and dare I say it McDonald's that were FAR superior to the crap that Crogan's tries to pass as food. My gf ordered the risotto which was undercooked with a bitter sauce that was somehow both bland and pungent at the same time. It was inedible and I had to give her half of my short ribs. I should add that my short ribs were bland, stringy, and only slightly less wretched than the risotto. The polenta it came with was tasteless and had the consistency of a wet paper towel. I can only judge my grandmother's steak sandwich (they had run out of her first choice -- prime rib) by saying that she only had one bite before offering it to us as a road snack for the next day. I should say we declined and opted instead for McDonald's. To be fair, the french fries that came with my grandma's dinner were pretty good. I would recommend that people stay clear of this place all together for food. (No opinion on the bar as I didn't drink there) Considering that I've had better meals for 2 dollars at El Pollo loco, Crogans might want to consider getting a new head chef. read more
