This was definitely a gem! I put together a hike and part of my activity duties was to find an eating spot for after the hike. Diggery Inn was such a treasure find. Tucked away in a little area of Oakland, this restaurant did not disappoint. There were 16 of us at the restaurant and there was enough room for us to sit at a community table. The breakfast was so good! I scoped out the menu before I came so I was ready to order! I had the Stats breakfast which was a waffle with 2 eggs and 2 strips of bacon! It was so delicious. From the looks of it, everyone enjoyed their meals, even the kids. Good eats, good vibes, and the staff was extremely hospitable even with a large group. I love the environment, I love the people who work here, I want this place to continue being what it is. It has a very cute, cozy atmosphere and the trestle glen neighborhood it's in benefits from it holistically. The reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is specifically for the potatoes. I REALLY don't want to give it three stars, and in fact, I'd give it 5 if not for the potatoes. I'm definitely a "potatoes guy". Even when potatoes are poorly done, I'll still clean the plate. Not here though. I don't know what it is. They're just.. off. Don't get me wrong, the omelet I got with it was amazing, just the right balance of cheese to other ingredients. Alright coffee, good pancakes. It's just that it takes a lot for me to be grossed out by potatoes as a side. I tried taking them home and crisping the hell out of them in an air fryer, but no dice. They were off in an uncanny way just beyond the range of perception that we can pair with an explanation. I'm a firm believer that there are parallel dimensions slightly above and below our own where things are slightly worse, and slightly better. In the better dimension, interest rates are always 20% less than what they are in ours. In the worse dimension? Well, people get sick just a smidge more often. Road rage is just that much more of a regular occurrence. People are generally slightly more unpleasant in an immeasurable and unknowable way that we should feel so lucky to not have in our own plane of existence. These potatoes are average potatoes in the slightly worse dimension. I think it's probably because they're russet potatoes when they should be red potatoes (they're home fries). If the restaurant chooses to switch out their russet potatoes for red potatoes I will redact this entire review. Best of love, and again, if you're not after potatoes, GO to this place. I just want to be fully transparent about the one thing that I found incongruous with the rest of the universe about this restaurant. I have a distinct feeling that if this place served red potatoes instead of russet, it might be enough to click our dimension (which we can all agree has had more bugs recently) into a more stable place. read more

I've come here often throughout childhood to adulthood. Diggery is always a good spot for a solid meal in a calm environment. The service has always been decent and the energy from staff has never stopped being pleasant. As the food tastes like breakfast I could get anywhere else, it doesn't standout for that reason. I've lived 5 minutes away from the Diggery for my entire life, yet I'd never gone until the other day when my friend and I went to breakfast. I was blown away with the service and quality of food! The servers were quick, attentive, kind, and polite. The restaurant had very few other patrons, so we got top notch service. It was quiet and toasty; great for a good catch-up visit, or chill morning meal. I ordered the 2 pancake, 2 egg, 2 sausage combo. It was delicious and a large quantity of food for a great price. The ladies working frequently asked if we wanted coffee refills, and then sent us off very warmly, waving out the window, when we were done. How to spend $30 for weekday breakfast: order the pancake combo, with two eggs, two bacon, nice large mug of coffee ($3.35, steep), then smile and agree to the rapid upsell of fresh fruit plate ($4, so-so freshness on the apples), then sit in disbelief at the outrageous bill and also understand why the servers are so cheery this overcast morning. Coffee was very good, even if the creamer dispenser quite forceful tosses out too much cream. Eggs were tasty and soft, which is hard to do, but there was no seasoning. I did not mind the side of Tapatio but would have preferred the Cholula. Cakes were fine, if a tiny bit synthetic tasting. Next time this will be the order: two eggs with bacon, with home fries, coffee, and instead of the large biscuits I saw, ask for two warm tortillas. Make two breakfast burritos with the fillings and not feel as if I spent way too much. Also, I have been here forever and I did not even know this place existed. read more

Some of the best service I've had at a busy breakfast place. Not overbearing, but help was always close when I needed more water or coffee. The coffee, as well, was very good. The biscuits, I guess, are what this place is known for. They were good, but quite crumbly. Nearly impossible to spread butter on. I ordered the Manzanita Waffle because the bacon looked irresistible as I watched it come out on other peoples' plates. Here's the bing about the bacon though: it tasted hickory smoked. Delicious in its own right I'm sure, but definitely an interesting dynamic in a waffle. Cover it in syrup and you won't be disappointed. It has to said that the vibe here is relaxing and welcoming, somewhere you want to sit a while. This isn't always the case in Oakland. Add it to your list of spots to check out! read more

Awful sums up this dump trying to be as good as Denny's, but falling short in every way. Just when you think that a cook couldn't screw up something as easy as Huevos Ranchero, you haven't dug yourself into the third ring of hell that is Diggery Inn. Salsa was pure crap and piled high on top of two not fresh GMO corn tortillas. Just under the shit salsa you will find processed cheese food masquerading as jack cheese. Diggery cook du jour couldn't even serve the two over easy eggs without tearing the yolk and unfortunately the watery shit-4-salsa was all over everything. It would of been wiser to use canned salsa, at least you know what is in store. I had a few bites and moved my plate to indicate I was done. Server didn't ask about the food, quality, taste and appeal. She also didn't ask if I wanted to order something else and since three bites apparently indicates satisfaction with a plate of apathy, the bill reflected Diggery Inn's credo, serve crap and collect the cash. This used to be my favorite breakfast / brunch spot. Sadly I will no longer be returning. My partner and I ordered the Dondy Dan omelette and mushroom burger medium well to share. Omelette was delicious but the patty in the burger was raw. We returned it to have it cooked more. The same burger was recooked and returned ti us still raw. We showed our waitress and she just srugged her shoulders and gave us our bill. The bill had written on it, medium raw. What the .... is medium raw? They did not remove thd charge fir the burger we couldn't eat. We paid our bill and was leaving. No word from the owners. Usually when we leave, the owners and staff always say "Thank you, have a nice day." Nothing. They said nothing to us. We had been good customers but we can never go back. This place has been here for a while and when we came here on Monday afternoon for a late lunch, it was filled with regulars. I love places with regulars and waitresses that are efficient, no nonsense but call you sweetie. They serve breakfast all day. Full omelette menu, assortment of burgers, sandwiches and salads. Standard fare but with just enough variety. Fair prices and hearty (but not overwhelming) portions. I got the grilled cheese with avocado and tomato and it came with a bunch of crispy shoestring fries (YUM!) and hubby got waffles / bacon and eggs. They come to you to take your order, but you get up when you're done to pay. I don't eat bread so the ladies always give me fruit instead. I've noticed how the staff engage with their customers. It's like walking into "Cheers" where everybody knows your name.
