I came here for breakfast with my three-year-old daughter, and unfortunately it was a big letdown. We both ordered pancakes, and they were honestly terrible--very dense, completely flavorless, and oddly pale. From the moment they arrived, I had a feeling they wouldn't be good, and that turned out to be right. I ordered bacon and wasn't expecting anything fancy, but it was surprisingly paper-thin and not very good. My daughter's sausage patties were tiny and quite dry. The coffee was decent, but that ended up being the best part of the meal. The atmosphere is pretty basic, though the restaurant is in a cool old building in Jack London Square. I've been here before, but it had been a long time, and I remember it being much better. Based on this experience, I wouldn't come back for breakfast. Don't when thus place changed hands but as an original Oakland resident I jave to say it's not as I remember it. I understand things change but I can't recommend this place. I walked out of Buttercup Grill after being seated and waiting for 10 minutes to jabe anyone speak to me, so I drove up the block for a simple late breakfast and no other expectations. After choosing a seat I asked for coffee, greapfeuit juice 3 eggs over easy, potatoes, bacon and toast. I didnt gett the coffee, the home fries with burnt onions that came out of the precooked pan was on the plate along with four pieces of bacon. Also on the plate was two pre-cooked croutons called toast. I am so disappointed. I've been coming to the Oakland grill for decades. I always order the crab Benedict. We have since moved across the country and upon arriving back to the bay for a visit, we decided to hit the Oakland Grill for breakfast. This is the first thing I've eaten all day. I felt that the crab tasted a bit off, but my husband tried it and said it tasted okay, so I kept eating. A few minutes later I was throwing up the whole meal in the bathroom. I told our waitress and over 15 minutes went by while she deliberated with her manager about the validity of my complaint. Our waitress came back and said "Our manager says that we just got a new supply in, so there's nothing wrong with the food. Maybe you have an allergy, but here is the number you can call if you go to the hospital and you can file with our insurance--" "Um, okay, but I just threw up the whole meal in your bathroom. Can you rectify the bill to reflect that and take my meal off? It's not really okay that someone gets sick in your restaurant from the food and you come back with 'file a complaint with our insurance'-- we're on a trip back in the Bay, so no I won't be going to the hospital" *mind you, I'm also 6 months pregnant* my face is red, capillaries burst in my eyes from vomiting-- The toilet was full of vomit, I feel like I should've shown it to her, but of course I flushed and wiped things down (after asking for paper towels, because there weren't any) because I'm not disgusting and didn't think I would be met with the rebuttal I got. So she went back to talk to the manager, and came back again and said "She says everything is just free and she wants to know if you need us to call an ambulance" which would have been a kind gesture if it wasn't insulting. The manager was incredibly rude, basically just wanted to shoo us out the door, and did not apologize or seem concerned. The server was very polite. So what the biggest disappointment is, is that the Oakland Grill is ruined for me now. It went from being a favorite place to having the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I've worked in food service-- you simply apologize, comp the entree and move on. But here we are and they've lost a customer. Of course, we still tipped our waitress on the full ticket value and told her we appreciated her going back and forth. We had no problem with paying the bill, but I'm shocked to have been met with a clap-back after they all clearly saw me (and probably heard me) come out from vomiting in the bathroom twice-- red faced, flushed, with capillaries burst around my eyes from the pressure of getting sick. We're not sure how one makes a bad BLT, but they managed. To add insult to injury the fries were then soggy Another peeve of mine occurred. There were six people at our table, three of whom ordered omelettes. The server didn't know what omelette he was brining to the table. Then, the meals came out in waves. Like, three breakfasts were delivered, then we got to wait another 15 minutes before the second three breakfasts were delivered. Because everyone at the table was trying to be polite, the people who were served first waited for the people who still needed their plates. I recently visited this breakfast spot and left feeling underwhelmed. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy yet the service didn't reflect that. I ordered the scramble combo while my boyfriend had the pancake combo. Unfortunately,the sides for his meal didn't arrive until after we had both already finished eating, which really threw off the whole experience. We also weren't really checked in on during our meal, even though we noticed surrounding tables getting attention multiple times. While the food itself was decent--nothing bad, but nothing memorable either--the lack of attentiveness stood out more than the meal. We did bring the issue to the host's attention and to their credit the bill was adjusted accordingly. The staff was friendly overall and the ambiance of the restaurant was fine but nothing special. Walked in here with a friend Sunday morning, was expecting a crowd, but thankfully there were a couple empty tables and we were seated right away. Firstly - The gentleman at the casher was the only person that provided us with any service, despite there being other staff members assisting other tables. Secondly - the food was ok. My friend got some kind of omelet and did not even eat half of it, because of their being no real flavor. I got the New York Scramble and I had the same experience no real flavor and pretty small size for what the price is. Overall I appreciate that they had seats available, but the flavor of the food and the prices are not for me. I also loved the fresh pineapple and orange on the side. It's such a nice touch and really enhances the overall taste of the meal. I'm bumping up this review. This spot is that locals, "greasy" spoon serving up huge portions of brunch. While I haven't tried everything, our most recent visit with kids in tow provided friendly, quick service, large, stick to your bones portions and tasty food. While maybe not "bougie", it was a great spot in an area lacking a ton of options. To note: We arrived about 1:30, 30 minutes or so before closing time, and there was no line, and they quickly served us. A few people came in even closer to closing time and were still seated. My son's kids breakfast at $10 included a mickey mouse pancake, 2 strips of bacon (wish that was crispier) and an egg. He of course ordered a hot chocolate that came with a tower of whipped cream. He was living the good life. My Colorado omelet at $16 was enough for two (and my husband and I did share it). Huge omelet with potatoes and a piece of toast. It was delicious with the only critique: the toast was not the highest quality bread, but all good. (I would have also loved some fruit as pictured in photos, but not this time) The menu has a little something for everyone, the place is a diner style with a bunch of tables, booths and a long counter. I'd like to add, they have huge windows, letting the natural sunlight pour in. It's really cozy. 100% a gem in an area that is losing businesses left and right. This is a staple, it's kid friendly and while I don't do brunch often, I'd recommend this place to anyone needing to cure a hangover, fill up a belly or just enjoy some eating out. read more

For reference, I haven't been here since it changed ownership. I see the recent bad reviews, and it's sad to see them. Since I can't speak to the service or food quality right now, my rating is for past great experiences. I'll focus on the location and interior. The location is entirely unique and such a fun experience. Oakland Grill is in the Produce District. If you go for breakfast early during the week, you get to watch all the activity as fresh produce arrives, is unloaded by forklifts, and restaurateurs come to get their supplies. The interior is classic brick-and-timber, with 15-foot ceilings and a loft area. read more

My boyfriend decided to take me here since he grew up eating from this restaurant as he raved about it in the car ride there explaining how good it is. As excited I was for him, we were left disappointed in our breakfast. The Joes special was so weird... the eggs lacked so much flavor while the potatoes were SO salty. It didn't balance eachother out because of how bland or salty a bite was. Crab cake benedict was okay. The crab cake itself was mostly dough rather than filling. The potatoes again were super salty. Ummm... no! This was once a place I frequented with friends, family and the like. Yesterday was hands down my last trip to this Jack London Square staple. The dining area was clean with the exception of a couple dirty tables. Our order- a waffle combo w/scrambled eggs, a fruit-topped, crispy waffle with eggs O/M and a pancake combo with eggs O/M and bacon. The food arrived quickly but surprisingly was not hot. We asked for warm syrup to melt the cold blocks of butter but were disappointed with an "it's broken" explanation. Not sure what has to be broken to prevent warming syrup or butter . The fruit atop the waffle and served with the waffle combo was more than a disappointment, especially with a bustling fresh produce market next door. The fruit-topped waffle was missing the whipped topping, so he handed the spray can to us. Weird. We returned the thin, blondie pancakes and fruit waffle untouched and paid the $32 tab for a waffle combo, four eggs and two slices of bacon. In Oakland's sea of culinary options there's no need to settle for less than acceptable. read more

First time going to Oakland Grill and I must say, everything was beyond my expectations. I called Easter morning to check the wait time, and upon arrival the owners had a booth already waiting for me. I ordered the Colorado Omelette and my boyfriend ordered the Oakland Grill Omelette. We also both shared an order of French toast. The order came out in a timely fashion and everything was very delicious. Both Omelette orders come with country potatoes that were very tasty. My omelette had avocado included and they were beyond generous with the portions. Another thing I would like to mention is that the service was very attentive. You have personnel walking down the isles checking up on you and making sure everything is up to par. The location has plenty of parking so you do not have to worry about where to park. This was my first time here I really like the location of the restaurant which was off the Main Street (broadway) and it was really quiet. I felt a little rushed to order my food. When I received my meal I was not checked on the whole time I was eating and it's not like the place was super busy. The potatoes had a lot of flavor and a little undercooked in my opinion and the hot links could've been grilled a little longer also. My family and I visited Oakland Grill on a Sunday morning. There were people in the restaurant, but it didn't appear too busy. They seated us upstairs. Ten minutes passed and no one came to check on us. My dad wiped down the high chair for my niece and that thing was DIRTY. This is based on personal history of hospitality- Just because you can purchase & operate a restaurant doesn't mean you are well suited to do so. This is my 2nd time dining here & will luckily be my last. Service is spartan. The turnaround from ordering food to arriving at table is waay too stretched because the owner/operator obviously has whittled away his staff to a minimum. Sure, Sunday breakfast at noon is busy but there was no waiting for a table, seeing servers almost running doesn't bode well & most tables were waiting for their food. My friend's huevos rancheros was disgusting (owner was helming the grill) & no employee ever checked on us. No staff smiles or interaction with customers which should happen occasionally in a bustling diner. My salmon scramble was decent, hence 2 stars but plate had a child's portion of home fries. Went there as a reprieve from continuously dining at Buttercup & my original hunch to avoid this place was validated. A few blocks from Jack London Square, the Oakland Grill is right in the middle of the downtown industrial food markets. The service was mid, considering there were only two people in there besides me. I asked for a glass of water two times, got up and went to the counter after 20 minutes to ask for a glass of water and still didn't receive it. It wasn't until my food came and I asked once again for a glass of water and it finally came. 30 minutes later. The food was mid. The scrambled eggs didn't have any flavor, but they were cooked perfectly. The potatoes were good, had a touch crema that was also good. The sausage patties were not homemade, but they were ok. The ambiance of the restaurant was old school, probably a popular place way back in the days. I would give it a -10 if I could. I used to go there for breakfast all of the time and it was always excellent. Unfortunately I wasn't aware it was under new ownership. A friend I went for dinner and nothing on the menu looked appetizing so we stuck with burgers and fries. It's a pretty good lil' local breakfast eatery here in Oakland. The waitress who I always have the good fortune of encountering has been there EIGHTEEN (!!!) years, and her dedication shows. They're one of the few spots that knows how to make my order perfectly, taking only a head nod as a description. They're also one of the few spots who understand what "well done" means in the realm of omelettes--perfectly browned without that pesky, weird runniness some breakfast spots (that shall not be named) are all about. You may or may not have had the delicious Homemade Café in Berkeley (and I am not tryna plug one breakfast spot in my review of another breakfast spot, but I'm just a breakfast-y person and am doing this all for your benefit), but if you have you know about their sour cream and salsa accompaniment to their breakfast potatoes. While they may not offer fresh salsa, Oakland Grill definitely offers that dollop of sour cream for your 'taters on the side. Coupled with the extra avo I had in my omelette and the table-side Tapatío, it was a straight party, folks. Sad to say the quality of food has gone down at this place. It's been a while since I've been here but went today and was disappointed with both food and service. I ordered a Benedict and the flavor and consistency was off. There was an odd taste to the food, sort of like the flavoring of all dishes cooked before it. And the consistency of the hollandaise was watery. Also, seemed that the rush that came in really threw off the waitress so we waited a while for the check that never came and went to the counter to pay.
