Family owned restaurant, very sweet people and welcoming! Love coming here to enjoy breakfast and lunch. My go to's are the following Mimosas, Hot chocolate, Freshly squeezed orange juice, Potstickers, California Burger, French toast with eggs and bacon, Breakfast burrito and totally recommend! Please note that there are times in the weekend they are super busy, please be patient

The Oakland Grill is a great place for a quick breakfast. I absolutely love their potatoes and how they come with sour cream. They are freshly made, not frozen and cooked to perfection. The cooks are super friendly and accommodating to request. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is small and quaint[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], Parking isn't horrible if you get lucky and they move reasonably fast with to go orders.

Don't when thus place changed hands but as an original Oakland resident I jave to say it's not as I remember it. I understand things change but I can't recommend this place. I walked out of Buttercup Grill after being seated and waiting for 10 minutes to jabe anyone speak to me, so I drove up the block for a simple late breakfast and no other expectations. After choosing a seat I asked for coffee, greapfeuit juice 3 eggs over easy, potatoes, bacon and toast. I didnt gett the coffee, the home fries with burnt onions that came out of the precooked pan was on the plate along with four pieces of bacon. Also on the plate was two pre-cooked croutons called toast. Having to flag down the preoccupied waitrest not tending to four people I asked for "not burnt and dry toast". 5 minuets later I wanted to just pay and leave at another disappointment in sevice.

    Waffle Combo
    Abigail N.

The waffle combo which I ordered was pretty decent! The eggs were cooked how I requested and the waffle sure was a waffle. It didn't do anything spectacular to impress me, but it was tasty as such things go. However, my boyfriend ordered the BLT and he was extremely disappointed. We're not sure how one makes a bad BLT, but they managed. To add insult to injury the fries were then soggy Another peeve of mine occurred. There were six people at our table, three of whom ordered omelettes. The server didn't know what omelette he was brining to the table. Then, the meals came out in waves. Like, three breakfasts were delivered, then we got to wait another 15 minutes before the second three breakfasts were delivered. Because everyone at the table was trying to be polite, the people who were served first waited for the people who still needed their plates. This meant that half the people at the table ate cold breakfasts, which was especially unfortunate for those who got omelettes.

I recently visited this breakfast spot and left feeling underwhelmed. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy yet the service didn't reflect that. I ordered the scramble combo while my boyfriend had the pancake combo. Unfortunately, the sides for his meal didn't arrive until after we had both already finished eating, which really threw off the whole experience. We also weren't really checked in on during our meal, even though we noticed surrounding tables getting attention multiple times. While the food itself was decent--nothing bad, but nothing memorable either--the lack of attentiveness stood out more than the meal. We did bring the issue to the host's attention and to their credit the bill was adjusted accordingly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff was friendly overall and the ambiance of the restaurant was fine but nothing special.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In the end while it wasn't a terrible experience it's not a place I'd go out of my way to return to.

    New York Scramble
    Nina M.

Walked in here with a friend Sunday morning, was expecting a crowd, but thankfully there were a couple empty tables and we were seated right away. Firstly - The gentleman at the casher was the only person that provided us with any service, despite there being other staff members assisting other tables. Secondly - the food was ok. My friend got some kind of omelet and did not even eat half of it, because of their being no real flavor. I got the New York Scramble and I had the same experience no real flavor and pretty small size for what the price is. Overall I appreciate that they had seats available, but the flavor of the food and the prices are not for me. I do not mind paying $$$ but the flavor has to be there or at least the portion size should justify it.

    Potato Dog
    Ray B.

Check out the potato dogs! According to Laura, they are the most delicious potato dogs. The world has ever known. Some people would even say they're better than a hotdog or a hamburger. I personally have never eaten the potato dog, but looking at the pictures I would like to I took 20 pictures. Pictures are awesome. Pictures are sometimes better than food. Sometimes they satisfy your hunger in a way that Food never could is that poetic. I don't know you tell me

this is the phone number she brought me to "take it up with our insurance if you go to the hospital"

I am so disappointed. I've been coming to the Oakland grill for decades. I always order the crab Benedict. We have since moved across the country and upon arriving back to the bay for a visit, we decided to hit the Oakland Grill for breakfast. This is the first thing I've eaten all day. I felt that the crab tasted a bit off, but my husband tried it and said it tasted okay, so I kept eating. A few minutes later I was throwing up the whole meal in the bathroom. I told our waitress and over 15 minutes went by while she deliberated with her manager about the validity of my complaint. Our waitress came back and said "Our manager says that we just got a new supply in, so there's nothing wrong with the food. Maybe you have an allergy, but here is the number you can call if you go to the hospital and you can file with our insurance--" "Um, okay, but I just threw up the whole meal in your bathroom. Can you rectify the bill to reflect that and take my meal off? It's not really okay that someone gets sick in your restaurant from the food and you come back with 'file a complaint with our insurance'-- we're on a trip back in the Bay, so no I won't be going to the hospital" *mind you, I'm also 6 months pregnant* my face is red, capillaries burst in my eyes from vomiting-- The toilet was full of vomit, I feel like I should've shown it to her, but of course I flushed and wiped things down (after asking for paper towels, because there weren't any) because I'm not disgusting and didn't think I would be met with the rebuttal I got. So she went back to talk to the manager, and came back again and said "She says everything is just free and she wants to know if you need us to call an ambulance" which would have been a kind gesture if it wasn't insulting. The manager was incredibly rude, basically just wanted to shoo us out the door, and did not apologize or seem concerned. The server was very polite. So what the biggest disappointment is, is that the Oakland Grill is ruined for me now. It went from being a favorite place to having the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I've worked in food service-- you simply apologize, comp the entree and move on. But here we are and they've lost a customer. Of course, we still tipped our waitress on the full ticket value and told her we appreciated her going back and forth. We had no problem with paying the bill, but I'm shocked to have been met with a clap-back after they all clearly saw me (and probably heard me) come out from vomiting in the bathroom twice-- red faced, flushed, with capillaries burst around my eyes from the pressure of getting sick. So if you decide to go, don't order the "real crab"

I'm bumping up this review. This spot is that locals, "greasy" spoon serving up huge portions of brunch. While I haven't tried everything, our most recent visit with kids in tow provided friendly, quick service, large, stick to your bones portions and tasty food. While maybe not "bougie", it was a great spot in an area lacking a ton of options. To note: We arrived about 1:30, 30 minutes or so before closing time, and there was no line, and they quickly served us. A few people came in even closer to closing time and were still seated. My son's kids breakfast at $10 included a mickey mouse pancake, 2 strips of bacon (wish that was crispier) and an egg. He of course ordered a hot chocolate that came with a tower of whipped cream. He was living the good life. My Colorado omelet at $16 was enough for two (and my husband and I did share it). Huge omelet with potatoes and a piece of toast. It was delicious with the only critique: the toast was not the highest quality bread, but all good. (I would have also loved some fruit as pictured in photos, but not this time) The menu has a little something for everyone, the place is a diner style with a bunch of tables, booths and a long counter. I'd like to add, they have huge windows, letting the natural sunlight pour in. It's really cozy. 100% a gem in an area that is losing businesses left and right. This is a staple, it's kid friendly and while I don't do brunch often, I'd recommend this place to anyone needing to cure a hangover, fill up a belly or just enjoy some eating out.

    SB S.

I ordered the Joe Special with spinach, mushrooms, garlic, and onions and it was absolutely delicious. The combination was perfect, and the side of potatoes with sour cream was amazing too. I also loved the fresh pineapple and orange on the side. It's such a nice touch and really enhances the overall taste of the meal. I also ordered French toast and coffee and everything came out great. What really stood out to me was the service. They checked on me every few minutes to make sure I didn't need anything, which made the experience feel welcoming and genuine. This place truly doesn't miss. I left happy and satisfied and will definitely be back.

    Joe's Special & Crab Cake Benedict 3/5
    Kyrie S.

My boyfriend decided to take me here since he grew up eating from this restaurant as he raved about it in the car ride there explaining how good it is. As excited I was for him, we were left disappointed in our breakfast. The Joes special was so weird... the eggs lacked so much flavor while the potatoes were SO salty. It didn't balance eachother out because of how bland or salty a bite was. Crab cake benedict was okay. The crab cake itself was mostly dough rather than filling. The potatoes again were super salty. Service was great, kind staff. As my boyfriend sat and ate his meal he was really disappointed and I had to listen in the car ride home about how the quality went down and the food was ok.

    Ashley C.

Service was very fast and I was able to get seated quickly for Weekend brunch. Although the potatoes were softer than I'd prefer, the servings were large and I'd always prefer to leave full than hungry for more! The interior feels very simple and old school. I'd recommend if you're in the area, but nothing was out of the ordinary.

    Helen W.

I've came in once or twice before and the food is always good and service is fast. This place is usually very busy and only serves breakfast and lunch. The restaurant itself is very casual and located right in the midst of the produce market in Oakland. After not being here for a while (only because it's a little out of the way for me) I can tell you that the food and service is still constant. A must return spot when in the area.

Ask the Community - Oakland Grill

Do they have gluten free toast or pancakes?

    I wish!

After the new ownership, things certainly changed. Have they gone back to the excellent food and service they were known for?

Probably not. We were die hards for Oakland Grill for many years. This business was sold back then and the new owners actually told me they weren't going to change anything, but we know how that went. One slice in an order of toast, really? I'm sure…

    Do they have bottomless mimosas?

Unfortunately the mimosa are not bottomless.

Do they have weekday bottomless mimosas?

Don't think so but I went on Sunday Morning and it was an option.

Is there another way to go up the stairs, like an elevator? I'll be with my grandparents and a large party. It looks like there's room for a large party upstairs.

Sorry no elevator service but they do have restrooms on the 2nd floor.

    Do they have mimosas here?

    Yes

Can i take my non service dog? Is there outside dog friendly space?

Unfortunately, Oakland Grill does not have any outdoor seating. You should still go check it out though - one of my favorites in Oakland!

Do they have tv's to watch any sports?

    No they don't.

We ordered the wicked buns, Saigon give you wings, garlic noodle and the bo luc lac. The food was out very quickly. Wicked Buns: The wicked buns were quite good. Truly cannot go wrong with some fried bao buns! Chicken Wings: We really enjoyed the chicken wings as well. The fish sauce gives the wings a nice sweetness and makes them quite addicting. Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. The drinks were quite fairly priced as well which I really appreciated. Overall, I think the portion sizes can be a little small for the price, but the food is delicious and great. The drinks are also great and I would definitely come back for them!

I thought that the chicken tasted like a better, higher quality chipotle chicken. The ingredients were so fresh tasting, and the jalapeño lime dressing was so good. I also wanted to give their desserts a try, so we went with the dark chocolate chip cookie. This was the most "gluten free" tasting thing out of everything we got. The texture of the cookie was unlike normal cookies, but that didn't bother us much. The cookie itself was more on the "less-sweet" side, and was packed with rich dark chocolate. While not exactly my thing, it's worth a try for true dark chocolate lovers! Overall, I was so impressed by kitava. It is the perfect option when you want something healthy and fresh, but do not want to sacrifice flavor. I was absolutely be back!

I will say, if you have somewhere to be *ORDER ONLINE*. I got there and was told to order from the self serve tablet (I could have done this on my phone ahead of time), but I put in my order and sat down to wait for it. At the 22 min mark, the two groups of two behind me got their food before I did, so I went up to the worker behind the bar and asked if my order was ready and I was told mine would be next. All in all- took 32 mins. So again, if you have somewhere to be- order ahead! Food was good. Could definitely tell it was made fresh to order - not only because it took some time but because my friend cauliflower came out PIPING hot. Lots of oil drippings, so if that isn't your thing, may not be for you, but I will say that it was my fav bite. This was a good restaurant- I would say 4 stars for the food alone. BUT if you're in a pinch, either order online or maybe save this spot for when you have more time. Also- I know that good quality food is pricey, this place is no exception. But you pay for what you get and the quality is better than that of fast food.

While this visit was in between the lunch and dinner rush, unfortunately I think they are understaffed because at the time we sat down there was only 1 person who was busing tables and taking orders. As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

And it's been satisfying and well worth it all three times. I recommend both dining in and delivery. You cannot go wrong with their double burger. The smashed patties are perfectly cooked and seasoned. The supporting elements are quality and executed spot-on each time: the cheese, grilled onions, and mayo. It's a perfect fast casual burger. I also recently tried the Chopped Beef burger and dang it was amazing. The hearty meat and cheese the and buttery bread texture hit hard. This will be another go-to and I recommend it. For sides I've gotten tator tots, regular fries, and season fries. All fantastic and they're generous with the portions. HOWEVER -- you've gotta get the seasoned fries. Addictive and finger-licking amazing. When dining in staff is always friendly. Area's not too busy and you'll always find parking easily down a side street. And price wise it honestly feels like a steal for me given the care and quality and pure satisfaction. Works for me though -- I'm going to keep ordering from this place. Cannot recommend this gem of a burger joint enough. Fantastic seasoning and execution, solid prices, and absolutely satisfying every time.

I ordered the turkey club and it was honestly huge. You can see in the photo how big it is compared to my hand. It was stacked and super satisfying, the kind of sandwich that definitely fills you up. We also shared a deviled egg and some fried zucchini to start, which were great little bites before the main dish. The zucchini was crispy and light, and the deviled egg was simple but really good. I paired everything with a mocha latte that was perfectly balanced and honestly superb. Overall it was a ten out of ten brunch moment. Between the sunny weather, good coffee, and really satisfying food, it was exactly what we were looking for. Definitely one of those spots I would come back to for brunch again.

Our waitress took very long to even acknowledge us, didn't person herself to be very friendly, and lacked any attentiveness to us as customers. We had to ask other people for things like refills on our drinks, condiments, etc. She didn't ever really try to check to see how things were going after the food was served and we had to ask someone else to pay. Unfortunately considering this experience my husband doesn't want to go back and I hate that for us because the food was really good.
