This is my favorite for I don't know what to eat, lets go to Crogan's, place to eat -- Which happens often. The food it is tasty and reliable. We've never had a bad dish there. The fish and chips are great, the prime rib is equally as good. Blue cheese wedge salad is great to share. They have weekly daily specials (comfort food) during the week, somehow I keep missing meatloaf night. I was happy to find the dessert menu had be recently updated, the pear/apple crisp was tasty, but could have used some additional ice cream. read more

It was "Birthday Dinner" time again, and I wanted to find a place close to home. My hubby Bruce wanted steak, so I went online and searched. In Groupon, I found a deal at Crogan's Montclair, looked through their menu, and decided that was the place. We had never been there before, but were willing to try it. I made the reservations for Friday night. First, it was VERY crowded and noisy, but it was a Friday night, so... We got seated in a booth, which, I had asked for when I called in the reservation. We had pretty much decided what we wanted before we arrived, so when our server, Will, came to our table, we ordered everything we wanted: drinks, coconut prawns, ( which Bruce said were perfectly coated), fried zucchini, ( which were huge, hot and crispy outside, and fresh and crispy inside), the iceberg wedge salad, the caesar salad, and two top sirloin steak entries, (very well done), that came with garlic mashed potatoes and saluted vegetables. All of our food was not only of large proportions, but, also EXCELLENT in quality and flavor. When our steaks arrived, Will asked me to see if my steak was done enough, which it wasn't...(I saw pink), and he promptly apologized and returned it to the chef. In less than 3 minutes, he returned and it was perfect. Very flavorful steaks, yes, even though they were very well done! Will was very attentive and good at timing the courses, so we never felt rushed. He was never hovering over us, but was always attentive to when our plates were empty and the next course should arrive. Kudos to Will. When we finished, we decided to go all out and order the beignets, which consisted of 10 beignets with powered sugar and two dipping sauces, ( a semi-sweet chocolate and a crème fraîche sauce). DELICIOUS! Needless to say, we will be going back as often as we can to try other things on the menu... We just know now not to go on a Friday night...(reckon that is "date night" to many folks). read more

I have gone to this restaurant several times over the years and regretfully, it has gotten worse! The waiters refuse to warm up the bread claiming their cook is too busy to warm up the bread. Recently, a male waiter is promoted to manager and made this even worse, refusing to serve butter and forces margarine to be served with bread. In the age of health conscious restaurants popping up every where, this is one restaurant that serves you phony butter that produces cancer! The super expensive hamburger was basically raw in the middle and waiter refused to take it back to make medium burger or take it out of bill. The expensive salad dishes are now half the portion of the previous salad of a couple of months ago. The fish and chip is too oily. The calamari is elastic and over cooked. Overall, Crogans owner needs to re-evaluate the new manager's wishes to give less food for more money, to give cancer warning products rather than real butter, to refuse wishes of clients for correct food temperature. A number of Montclair restaurants have closed because of behaviors as such. Crogans is only a matter of minutes following in their foot steps if this geeky skinny dude is allowed to stay as a manager who refuses to serve clients with quality, good, and good quantity food. read more

Crogan's is basically Cheers. It's a local's place for people living in Montclair. If you live in a village with a place like Crogan's, you are very lucky. In England, people refer to their "local", meaning their local pub which they frequent a lot. Crogan's is my local I guess. This is not a foodie destination in any way. The food is fine, but the atmosphere deserves ten stars. I think the staff is nicest group of people I have ever experienced working in a restaurant. read more

A great place to play it safe. It's also a good place to bring non-adventurous people or people with very mixed and different ideas of what they want. It'll make everyone happy...just not too happy. No one will be unhappy, and everyone will find something they can eat. Got an aunt in town who's not going to try sushi, thinks vietnamese is too spicy and would need a knife and fork at the ethiopian place? Crogan's. I feel like ever since I did a review on Bellanico (which will make Italian food lovers VERY happy), I've been noticing bathrooms. Crogan's BR reminded me of the one in my high school. Similar to Bellanico, it's like whoever was in charge of ambiance forgot that people sitting at their tables might also sit in their bathrooms at some point. Just inconsistent is all. Not dirty or smelly, just...sad. If the bathroom was only serving the bar it would be ok. For the note they're trying to hit with their dining room it's off. read more

Mediocre food at best. You can sometimes get a decent burger but more often than not it's dry and hockey puckish. Service is good so 2 stars instead of one. Definitely not worth the money. If it weren't for the convenience and heavily poured drinks I'd never go. Food is pedestrian at best but it has the neighborhood vibe and sports on TV. It could be so much better, but since it's consistently pedestrian you know what you're getting. Bonus points for being kid friendly. read more

I couldn't agree more with Anders L. Went there b/c I heard they had great salads. Ordered a blackened salmon caesar-- what arrived was a tired looking frozen salmon fillet, probably pre-blackened, atop a pile of romaine lettuce with some jarred shredded parm on it. 2 anchovy fillets. totally boring. but the worst part was, it was $18.95!! I don't know how they get away with the prices they charge, considering how uninspired their food is. I could have eaten at dopo for that much! Mostly, though, this place feels surprisingly un-Bay Area like. This place wouldn't surprise me if I came across it on a cross-county road trip off some remote highway. (And frankly, the patrons, ahem, look to fit that part as well). But with so many better places to eat in this area, why go to Crogan's? If it were inexpensive, that would be different. read more

I have always had a great time at Crogan's. The food is simple but great, the service is always kind and upbeat, the drinks and beer options are great, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you can just relax and forget your worries for a while. I feel like you can only really enjoy this place if when you walk in the door you just lighten up and realize that you can just go in, have a drink and some good food, relax and enjoy the night and look around you at all the happy people just enjoying life. Thhis place is good for a menu that rarely changes but has continually basic good food. We have eaten here for thirty years on and off. It IS a happening place. After the fire it was remodeled into what it is now-an improvement. It is a really good standby place. read more

First time and was very disappointed. When we arrived there were more people in the bar area and not the restaurant side. Now I know why Drinks were weak and no showmen ship. Order lemon drop, came in the correct glass, little sugar on Rim and no garnish. Had shrimp appetizer, Menu listed 4 Prawns. We assumed they were Prawns not shrimp. I could of bought larger ones at Safeway for a third of the price. Dinner, Club Sandwich, Prime Rib and Scallops. Club was fine hard to mess up sandwich Prime Rib was smaller then expected and so was the baked potato. It was very small. A few bits and it was gone. The Scallops were okay with some rice and spinach mixed together in the center. I can't say it made an impression We live on the Peninsula and meant family there for dinner. There fist time as well at Crogan's. Crogan's just happens to in a good location and may have a promising future as a sports bar as there were a number of people hanging out drinking beer. read more

Nothing special and definitely not the healthiest menu I've seen. It's just your typical American diner menu. I would recommend avoiding the scallops. It's a house special, but it really isn't that special. The spinach and quinoa are so bland and they ruin the scallops with the sauce they put on them. Just stick with the burgers. read more
