I cannot believe I've been living here all my life and never came in to this historical café. You absolutely feel at home when you walk in through those doors and the food coming out of the kitchen is just oh sooo good. Stopped in for my biscuit and gravy review... sat at the counter and the service was not only quick but friendly!!! Two egg breakfast with b&g ... eggs cooked perfect biscuit was moist for being 9am and the gravy was the star.. layered with flavor delicious over the biscuit... knotty pine outshined various other breakfast restaurants today.. This is the first time we've stopped to eat in Bakersfield, we usually are just passing through. If you have the time, it's definitely a good place to get some ol' country food! This was your standard rustic diner planted square in the middle of the industrial section of town (pretty much 90% of Bakersfield). The staff was hard-working and gave surprisingly fast service for such a busy place.The food was okay - standard menu and you know you don't have to look to see if they serve biscuits and gravy. Of course they do! Would have been a solid three but we went there during covid. I know the restrictions are pretty schizophrenic- keep your mask on unless you're eating, which everyone in here was. But the staff wasn't masked up either. I realize this was probably a popular practice for the majority of the clientele; from the looks of them, Gavin Newsome will find no respite there. But it isn't a matter of popularity or politics or personal freedom, it's a matter of public health. And you have to wonder if they proudly ignore masking guidelines, what other evil government mandates do they rebel against? Like washing their hands after they use the bathroom, keeping food at proper temperatures or not serving things they dropped on the kitchen floor? Who knows? Alright, alright, alright!....doesn't even begin to describe this place. Originally, my wife and i located a rather lengthy review by some wordsmith named Dexter. Just in case anyone is wondering, you can't trust everything you read on the internet, so do your own research. As we parked and walked in, we were surprised at how busy the place was at 9 am. on a Sunday. We soon discovered why. It was only about a 10-minute wait for the 2 and 1/2 (3yo) of us to be seated. The decor is very ode to log cabin with a wonderful assortment of logging tools and old timey knick knacks that were just cool to see. I especially liked the old pac bell phone booth that doubled as a catch-all for utensils, extra menus, napkins and various odds and ends the wait staff would otherwise have to hunt down from the other side of the restaurant. My wife decided to try her hand at a stacker, which is basically a scramble. She wanted to play it safe by going with just cheese. A biscut split open on the bottom, topped with hashbrowns, eggs, and your choice of omelet type add-ins, in this case, just cheese. All of it smothered in a gravy that'll make your heart beat faster and not only because everything that's "bad" for you tastes so damn good. I'm telling you, when our food arrived, my wifes eyes looked like saucers. I thought someone was gonna call NASA. Nat Geo needs to do a documentary on the mountain that popped up. It was incredible, and my wife only ate about 1/3rd of it. Side note, it was just as good for a late lunch later that day. Now for my choice. The aforementioned Dexter character apparently had a rough go having to wrestling with his chicken fried steak, and i typically judge a new spot by their CFS i went with that. My cowboy potatoes had a great ratio of onion and bell pepper to seasoned potatoes and came out hot and fresh, no salt n peper or anything else needing added. Eggs were perfect (over easy), which surprisingly gets messed up way too often. My steak, it was impressive, to say the least. Crispy, and wasn't oozing with grease like Danny's would be. This isn't your average CFS, and it's about as big as my foot! Laid upon a bed of that wonderfully thick and flavorfully knotty breakfast gravy! I also had the biscut and gravy side, which i asked if we could get that early as the wife and child were starting to get hangry and snickers weren't on the menu. The waitress was only to happy to help us out. It was so good it disappeared probably faster than Dexter's credibility. So, we got gobs of food, great atmosphere, a new favorite breakfast obsession all for under $50. Did i mention this was breakfast and lunch for all 3 of us? In this day and age, that's a smokin hot deal! If you ask me, I'd be back tomorrow. Unfortunately, not every day is my day off. read more

Worst service I've ever had. We couldn't even get past the seating. We waited for 45 minutes and everybody that came after us were seated before us from what I seen sitting in the waiting area the restaurant was old, dingy and not kept. Definitely do not recommend dining. read more

I guess i stopped reviewing this restaurant because its one of my favorite and they are very good at what they do. Most of the time im here with friends or family. We talk and haveva good times with great food. I often walk out stuffed and for get to tell everyone that i had another delicious meal here again. So with that said. The food is still great as well as the service. If you like country food made the right way.... look no further. This is the spot for you. ** pro tip.. try to not go at the rush hour of lunch. This is unquestionably my favorite breakfast spot. We go here at least once a week. It's great for lunch, as well. Breakfast favorites are the Denver Omelet, Breakfast sandwich, Biscuits and gravy, and Bacon and eggs. They're bacon is absolutely fantastic! For lunch, they have great burgers and Carla's Chicken Sandwich is one of my go to lunches. My favorite lunch is the Pastrami sandwich. If you like pastrami, it's a must! It would be unfair of me to write a review without mentioning the staff. The staff is the best in town. They cater to your every need and the turnover is very, very low, which indicates this is a great place with a happy crew! There are only a few restaurants you can go into and see the same people each time, so you know they're doing something right. Downside? The only downside here is that you'll occasionally have to wait for a table. I'm definitely not the only person who loves this place! Great food, great service, and great prices! My wife ordered 1 bicuit & gravy 1 egg 1 bacon xtra crisp Mom ordered a waffle with 2 eggs and bacon And of course I HAD TO HAVE the Chicken Fried Steak Counrty Taters with 2 eggs over easy and a biscuit & gravy. The rustic charm of this place is hands down the most warm and cozy in all of town. The cooking is home style and they serve PLENTY!! Each of our meals alone could have fed 3 people. And it does!! We take the left-overs home and eat it again till it's gone. If you're passing through town, or you're one of the few that have yet to eat at this iconic restaurant, please do yourself a huge favor and stop in. Also, the entire wait staff is off the charts superb. So great at what they do! Friendly and always on top of things! Stopped here before my first day on the job at JSS Almonds just down the street. First impressions are that it's a great, Old fashioned cafe with an extensive Menu of American classic cafe fare. Looks like breakfast is served all day but it was lunchtime and I was looking for something light. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad and an ice tea. The prompt service had the food back to me in 10 minutes and it was..........decent. The grilled chicken was quite good and fairly plentiful but the salad was a bit weak. Lettuce was a bit sparse and there were at least two types, some of which was wilted. The dressing was kind of on the bottoms and only a little grated cheese with tiny, sparse croutons. I think this restaurant is probably a 5 for breakfast but couldn't get there for the salad. The food was really a three but the service was definitely a four. Gotta come back for breakfast. read more

The food is actually really good, but the 2 stars is because 80% of the waitress we saw that day didn't wear a mask during a covid pandemic, and when they did, they wore this really useless half shield that doesn't even cover the mouth area entirely. The cooks didn't even wear mask at all. They did not follow any guidelines to covid either. Every customer was bunched up in the front waiting for a table, more than half wasn't even wearing a mask and they did not even enforce it. Sadly this is the reason why the pandemic is lasting so long. ...but the food is good though. read more

On a recent visit to Bakersfield, I found Cope's on Yelp. It was fantastic! We were greeted and seated right away. The menu is expansive, and it was hard to choose, given all the tasty-sounding options. I settled on the breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs and bacon on sourdough. It was divine. The bread was toasted, enveloping pillowy eggs, melted cheese, and crisp bacon. The side dish of potatoes was outstanding. The owner asked how everything was, and later when we were ready for the check, our server let us know that our food was on the house. It was wholly unexpected and genuinely the kindest gesture. I wish I lived closer so I could eat good cafe food often and also support an establishment run by gracious people. read more

Haven't been here in a few years but decided to stop by on our way out of town. Waitress was extremely rude. Food took way to long to come out compared to tables seated at the same time. I believe our waitress had held off on putting our order in because she was to interested in her personal conversation. I get people have bad days but don't take it out on people around you because your miserable. read more
