The staff was great, the food just didn't quite hit. It seemed like they were trying out new giant flake salt and didn't quite get the hang of it. Everything too salty and now and again you would crunch into a giant piece of crystal salt. Nice ambiance, excellent food. We got the herb and cheese ravioli (mostly I was just delighted to see red currants on a menu, haven't seen those in ages) and the cavatelli ragu. Both were excellent - excellent flavors, the chantarelles and red currants complimented the ravioli. We also got the focaccia and a salad, which were good, though not amazing. Also, surprisingly (and nicely), service was super quick. Between ordering an appetizer and entrees, we were in and out in about an hour, and it was a pretty busy night. Definitely a special place. My chef friend and I decided to grab dinner and planned a trip to Coperta to reminisce on how much we miss Italian food back home in New York. This spot exceeded the bar with subtle seasonal twists on Southern Italian classics, incredible (& unique) beverage selections, and a whole-heartedly genuine team of service professionals. The decor and setting across the street from Benedict Fountain Park in a cute and trendy downtown neighborhood is wonderful and almost makes you forget you're in a major metropolis. The attention to detail from the team in every regard reminded me of some of my favorite eateries in back home in New York, but perhaps even more comfortable and "homey." Sending a huge thank you for making our second visit even more memorable than the first! The best thing about place was the food and it was marginal at best. From there unfortunately, it goes downhill. VERY overpriced, the service was absolutely horrendous (we each ordered 1/2 orders of 2 different dishes, and they brought them separately, which was ok, but there was a THIRTY MINUTE gap between them in the middle of dinner), and it is obvious the owners don't respect their servers enough to give them enough help to do their jobs right. AND on top of that, as I was getting ready to figure the tip, my friend pointed out that they AUTOMATICALLY add a 23% "service charge", but then also expect a tip on TOP of that. Even if the food was amazing, you couldn't pay me to go back. Olive Garden is every bit as good (and that is not praise of Olive Garden, trust me) is not ludicrously priced and you won't spend a half hour waiting for a glass of wine. read more

Great Italian food, but for me the real draw is the bar. For food, I like to hover around the starters and the pastas for food. Veggie sides are very strong here. We typically avoid the seafood when its on the menu just because it tends to be on the saltier side and the non seafood options are just so much better. For drinks, the cocktail menu isnt very deep, but what they have plays pretty strong. However, the real draw for me is the amaro collection, which gives a lot of flexibility to order off menu if you have any amaro cocktail preferences. I personally love Paper Planes and I love that they carry the amaro nonino required. They also have Don Ciccio amaros from DC, which are close to my heart from when I used to live in the district. read more

A friend of ours got us the Dining Hall Pass, so for a Sat date night, we decided to go to Coperta for dinner. It's located near downtown Denver, away from the noise. Such a cute ambiance inside. From the tile flooring to the wood furniture, there's a homey feel. Our waitress was very welcoming. I was between two cocktails and she easily persuaded me to go with their Sage Advice signature cocktail. I'm so happy I did, it was great! For dishes we decided to try four of their pastas, start sizes. We ordered the Spaghetti Cacio E Pepe, Bucatini All'amatriciana, Goat Cheese Ravioli, and the Linguini. Everything was so delicious!! I've been to this place several times, and still love coming back. The ambiance has a very Italian kitchen feel with the tile floors to the plates. I highly suggest getting plates to share and an entree. All their food is so good that you won't want just one thing. They are currently doing a market menu which changes weekly. This week was fairy eggplants which were flash fried small eggplants with an aioli of some sort which was very good and cute. Squid ink pasta with black garlic and braised greens. It was so good. If you are bold enough, it is worth it. You could really taste the garlic, Parmesan and greens. Last but not least was the lamb. The knives could of been bigger to cut into this hunk of meat, but all in all it was cooked perfectly, medium rare. They do seem understaffed, so please be kind to your waiters. Choose Coperta and you'll have a delicious meal, but you will leave hungry and pay a lot for the privilege. The calamari was very good. Fresh and light, small for $19. My rigatoni carbonara had 11 noodles on the plate and 4 pcs of bacon. The half portion was $14 the cavatelli $17. I spoke to the lady manager and she said produce is very expensive now. I looked at my plate of 11 noodles and said I understand but my dish has 25 cents worth of noodles in it. I told her it was delish but definitely an anemic sized portion. She didn't care. The ambiance was perfect for a dinner to catch up with friends and family or a romantic date night. The menu is structured for a traditional 3 course Italian dinner. I love that everything on the menu stays true to the southern Italian region. All the dishes we tried were deliciously fresh and full of flavor. I also love that they feature dishes on different nights of the week. Thursday is gnocci so I tried the pesto gnocci with pine nuts. This was a perfect dish for spring as the basil offered a beautiful freshness to the soft pillowy gnocci. The pine nuts on top provided a fun crunch and nutty richness with every bite. I went here for happy hour to have some small bites and cocktails! Their happy hour is all day and night as long as you are seated at the bar. Unfortunately, the bar seating is very limited, as this place is on the small side. Luckily for us, a large group at the bar was waiting for their table, so we were able to snag their spot as soon as their reservation was ready. The bartenders were so welcoming! They quickly cleared off the bar top once we sat down and greeted us with waters. They were happy to provide recommendations on drinks and the food. I opted for a glass of red wine and we started with the Supplì al Telefono on the happy hour menu, which is fried balls filled with risotto and pancetta. They were delicious and the red sauce they sit in was wonderful. I loved the fact that they have fresh pasta here. And what I love even more than the fresh pasta, was that you could get it as a meal or in a snack size portion. Since we were there to only have small bites, I was able to get some pasta in that snack size portion, and it was perfect! I opted for the rigatoni carbonara, which was rich in flavor, salty from the pancetta (but I like that), the sauce was a creamy, silky consistency that was so flavorful, the pasta was perfectly al dente, and the fresh grated cheese on top was the perfect compliment. The snack sized portion was honestly pretty filling and just the right size for the occasion. We came here almost 5+? Years ago when we first started dating and it was nostalgic coming back here for restaurant week. Luckily, they let us have the regular menu because the food here is amazing Italian food. Obviously, seeing how much we order you can understand why we don't stay with the restaurant week menu. It's great to see and taste that after such a long time, the food hasn't changed. They still deliver fresh and delicious Italian food. We got all the smaller portions of the pasta so we can try them all and the eggplant parm. Well, the eggplant parm was pleasantly surprising. No breading. The cook was good cause it was crispy and the flavors were strong. We initially got this appetizer that serves five dishes that rotates around. So, what you see ...isn't what you might get next time. They all were a pleasant surprise. Pastas are cooked Al Dente and we'll flavored. You can tell the difference in their spaghetti. The sauce. Pay attention to that detail. Lol Oh, and the service was good. They got us in earlier then our normal reservation. That was wonderful instead of wondering around. Plus you saw a manager walking around giving the servers an extra hand if they needed to. Always a plus to see them helping. Lovely date spot. Disappointed. Seems to be hit and miss. We have had great dinners here. We sat at the bar and ordered a salad which came out in a timely manner and was so good. Then...quite a wait. Chef brought out a small plate of pasta and apologized. Shortly after our dinners came out. Two were good and one was stone cold. We sent it back and the other two were eaten...one person went without dinner because we didn't get it. They took it off our tab, offered a dessert but we were not interested at that point. BUMMER! Man oh man did I really want to love this place. The interior is incredibly homey and provincial almost like a large and open french kitchen (I know its Italian but it feels French inside). The inside, I love! Other things that fell short include the service and the execution of the food. Service: Fairly slow and a little spotty. We had like, three people help us in our like, three hour dining time. Had to ask for bread a number of times but they seemed well versed in the menu. And, while mistakes happen, they charged us for a 53$ bottle of wine when we ordered a 35$ bottle of wine. Their solution was reasonable: ten off the bottle and free dessert but I do wish it hadnt happened at all. Food: Good and fairly priced. I suppose I just wasnt overwhelmed by anything and the pasta I ordered had way too much pepper (Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe). The kale soup looks scary and perhaps like kale juice with pieces of kale mixed in but turned out to be very delicious with small bits of gnocchi or some potato pasta mixed in. Super good.
